Doctor Who Android Apps

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 02:42 AM PDT

Doctor Who sonic screwdriver app on AndroidWhile you might be among the iPhone users taking advantage of the WhoNews iPhone app (see the banner above), Android users aren't without their fun Doctor Who gizmos.

Top of the class comes this great Sonic Screwdriver app, which offers three variations on the Doctor's multifunction lockpick/tricorder – those owned by Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor, David Tennant's popular Tenth Doctor and of course Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor.

With a zoom function, volume settings and intensity controlled by sliding your finger to extend or retract the device, it's a great app that does little else but really satisfy the Whovian within! Even better, I've just discovered that the latest version features River Song's screwdriver and a beta version of a Dalek gun!

See more at www.appbrain.com.

Meanwhile, other notable Doctor Who apps for the Android mobile phone platform include a couple of soundboards, lots of mobile desktop wallpaper and even a couple of talking book previews.

Fantastically, these apps are all free – although spare a thought for the person flogging the Doctor Who theme tune for $99c.

Fourth Doctor & K-9

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 02:06 AM PDT

All you collectors are in for another treat this month as Forbidden Planet have another exclusive figurine release in the shape of the Fourth Doctor and K9.

The Fourth Doctor and K-9 exclusives from Forbidden PlanetBeautifully sculpted and pinpoint accurate, this is a recreation of the Season 18  Fourth Doctor, complete with his trusty Sonic Screwdriver and wonderful burgundy coat.

The website describes the pair and also what you get for your money:

"This Doctor masked his brilliant and inventive mind behind a façade of bohemian eccentricity. The longest lived incarnation of the Doctors so far, he was forced to change his body after losing a fight with his old enemy the Master and falling from a radio telescope to the ground beneath him…

K-9 is a mobile computer in the shape of a dog. He was constructed by Professor Marinus to be a companion for him whilst working at a medical foundation in deep space. K-9 is both a huge database and has defensive capabilities, being equipped with a retractable laser in his nose which can be set to stun or kill. He can integrate with virtually any computer system including the TARDIS and has also helped the Doctor escape many a tricky and dangerous situation.

The Doctor rebuilt K-9 several times, upgrading and improving each version.

In this exclusive release you get the Fourth Doctor in his famous season 18 burgundy outfit and featuring a stunning new head sculpt. He is accompanied by the trusty K-9."

If you're feeling like you're collection isn't nearly complete enough then this is just what the Doctor ordered (ahem).

Once again, Forbidden Planet cannot ship overseas and so this offer is for UK and Irish customers only.

The item is on pre order now and is priced at £19.99, visit www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk to bag yours.

August Podcast 2

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 12:38 AM PDT

It's the second of our weekly podcasts. The Jury is out on whether or not listeners prefer the weekly format. Some of you have commented that the shorter podcasts don't leave enough time for the silliness. So, we'll try to put some more in!

Anyway, it's Nicholas Briggs, David Richardson and Paul Spragg with special guest Lisa Bowerman (speaking about the latest series of the The Adventures of Bernice Summerfield). There's news of the new Benny animation too, and its big screen premiere.

It's free and you can easily download it or stream it by using the controls slightly to the left of this item.

And there'll be a new competition coming up in two weeks' time.

A Grand Celebration of 5 Years of Doctor Who: Podshock

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 07:29 PM PDT

This past Saturday, the 21st of August 2010 was not only our seasonal meet up on Second Life, it also marked the 5th anniversary of the Doctor Who podcast,Doctor Who: Podshock. (We used our last meet up last May to mark the 25th anniversary of the Gallifreyan Embassy).

People from all corners of the world came together to have fun and to meet Doctor Who: Podshock hosts, correspondents, supporters, and other Doctor Who fans. As usual, Victor led the much anticipated TARDIS tours, a staple of our meet ups on Second Life in which he takes a TARDIS load of people to other Doctor Who themed areas of Second Life. This time, he even allowed me to pilot a Jon Pertwee style TARDIS for one trip. It was very exciting indeed.

The TARDIS Tours took us to Who Island which had a replica of Stonehenge with 'underhenge' which we discovered the Pandorica (and it opened)! We also got to see the console room seen in this year's 'The Lodger' episode and as always the tour concluded in the Doctor Who Museum. The virtual museum chronicles all of Doctor Who throughout its long history.

Forum News

Regular visitors might have noticed a problem with the Kasterborous Doctor Who Forum over the last 24 hours – so we'd just like to provide an update.

At present, the forum has an error, the cause of which is still unclear. After an initial fix on Sunday lunchtime, the forum software is now unable to display any posts.

I'd like to make clear to our community that every effort is being made to resolve this issue.

I'm currently in discussion with some experts on this particularly forum software in order to find a way around the issue and hopefully apply a fix. Meanwhile, on a related note, fixing this issue is holding up development work on another portion of Kasterborous, so this fault is doubly galling.

If we're unable to find a fix for this error before Tuesday lunchtime, a backup from Sunday 15th August will be restored. This is a regrettable measure, but we may be left with little alternative.

Torchwood Series 4's John BarrowmanJohn Barrowman has been selling off some unwanted items in advance of his trip to the USA to film Torchwood Series 4, reports WalesOnline.

The garage sale – which included a three-year-old blue Peugeot 407 estate, wardrobes, sofas and dressers, kitchenware, clothes, not to mention signed Torchwood comics – seemed to attract some attention, not least from fans and residents concerned that Barrowman and his partner were headed to the USA for good…

"I'm not moving, I love Wales too much."

Barrowman's agent Steven Greenhalgh has also insisted that the actor is planning only a few months in the USA.

"I can confirm that John is not moving to the US. He will be shooting Torchwood over there for five months next year, however he will continue to live in Wales."

Torchwood Series 4 is expected to commence shooting in January 2011.
