A Carnival of Monsters!

Posted: 04 Sep 2010 05:07 AM PDT

Doctor Who Live - the Cybermen!

SFX have spoken to three key members of the Doctor Who Live team – and a fair few interesting facts have emerged.

First of all, there's the one that you might have either guessed already or heard about – that the storyline of the Doctor Who show has its roots in a classic Jon Pertwee era adventure…

Director (and Tweenies creator) Will Brenton revealed:

"So we've created a brand new Doctor Who character – called Vorgenson [to be played by Nigel Planer], but it is a character who grows out of previous Doctor Who story, called 'Carnival Of Monsters'. All of its genealogy grows out of that episode. And the fans who spotted that reference will enjoy how it happens.

"It's taken what happened in that episode and moved it on, and updated it and had some fun with it as well."

The genius of Robert Holmes continues to be felt in Doctor Who! Carnival of Monsters originally aired in1973 and starred Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor with Katy Manning as Jo Grant, and guest starred Ian Marter as Lt Andrews (several months before he was cast as companion Harry Sullivan), Tenniel Evans as Major Daly, original Davros actor Michael Wisher as another space fascist, Kalik, as well as Leslie Dwyer as Vorg, the Miniscope-owning showman.

It's a pretty exhasutive interview with Brenton – he covers the scale of the show (which takes place on a "thrust stage") as well as revealing that there is both an interval and a cliffhanger, the show runs for 80 minutes, there are "a lot of costume changes, characters, surprises…" and Matt Smith appears for much more than the five or six minutes Brenton had originally expected.

Find out more about Doctor Who Live at www.doctorwholive.co.uk.

Meanwhile, tickets for Doctor Who Live start at £38.50 (there are cheaper options at £34.50 or £25.00) – you can book for any of the nine venues here at Ticketmaster!

Teacher Builds K-9 Replica

Posted: 04 Sep 2010 03:42 AM PDT

Take recycled material, add a splash of technical know-how from Shepperton and a frisson of a charity cabal of Daleks and Bob's your fathers brother, you get Wiltshire-based school teacher and amateur robot builder Mark Enright's fantastic hobby.

Mark's models are full-scale, operational copies of both the R-6 unit from Star Wars and Doctor Who's very own K-9 which he dazzles youngsters with at fan conventions across the country.

Doctor Who's best friend, K9. He's a very good dog, you know...Mark, a teacher at the John Bentley school, Calne,  is also a member of Charity Daleks, a Wiltshire based model makers group which raises money for various worthy causes:

"Building these kinds of robots is very self-indulgent, so getting the opportunity to raise money for charities using these builds is very satisfying.

When they appear at events they have a great feel good factor, people smile, and in turn feel very supportive of the said charities we are raising money for."

As well as Daleks the group has amongst its repertoire The Weeping Angels, the Scarecrow Army from Human Nature/The Family of Blood and the Clockwork Droids from Moffat's masterpiece The Girl in the Fireplace.

At one recent event, the Corsham Sci-fi Family Fun day organised by Automattic Comics, the group helped raise over £3000 for charity.

The event also featured appearances by Frazer Hines, the Second Doctor companion, Jamie, and Mike Collins, a comic book artist who has had his worked featued in DWM.

Mark first began building models aged ten using Lego before moving on to bits of junk that he found and brought home:

"I am a great one for using recycled materials and not spending huge amounts of money. I like the idea of being imaginative with the materials I use and in solving new build problems."

From there he went on to earn a Fine Arts Degree before becoming a Special Effects Designer at Shepperton Studios. Now after a hard day teaching,  when he feels the urge to create he heads to his workshop at home.

Mark is a live-long nerd and has a particular fondness for the 'Astromech' droids from Star Wars:

"I built my first R2-D2 out of plasticine when I was about six, and my first K-9 out of cardboard at 10.

"I am part of a global Astromech club which has members all around the world who obsess over building R2-D2's and other Astromechs."

His next project will be to complete a full size replica Dalek with the help of pupils from John Bentley:

"It will be really nice when it is complete because it will give the students the opportunity to get their creation out in public and join the Charity Dalek group in events."

To see more of Mark's builds check out his blog.

Barrowman in the Park

Posted: 03 Sep 2010 07:31 PM PDT

Torchwood and Doctor Who star John BarrowmanDon't worry John – we haven't forgotten you! It seems like ages since we featured news about John Barrowman (in fact the last time was August 23rd!) but his legion of fans out there might like to be reminded that the showman is appearing at the Proms in the Park in Salford, Manchester!

The event takes place on Saturday 11 September at Buile Hill Park, where gates open at 4pm, and performances start at 6.30pm. Tickets for the whole evening – where Barrowman will be joined by world class mezzo soprano Juliette Pochin, Salford's own opera sensation Jon Christos and the award-winning BBC Philharmonic – are priced at just £20 so we recommend booking now to avoid disappointment.

It seems that we can continue to expect appearances from Barrowman on stage and screen for the rest of 2010 – Torchwood Series 4 doesn't begin production until early 2011.

Bernice Summerfield: Dead and Buried -- Released!

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 11:07 AM PDT

Finally it's here! Our very first fully animated adventure has been released and... It's completely free! Bernice Summerfield: Dead and Buried is a 10-minute animated adventure starring Lisa Bowerman as the 27th Century Archaeologist Bernice Summerfield, and Miles Richardson as Irving Braxiatel.

While waiting to see what Braxiatel is is planning, Benny goes back to her roots and investigates a previously undiscovered civilisation. It's not long, however, before she's being pursued through the ruins by an implacable foe.

"The Bernice Summerfield range has always been a testing ground for new writers, actors and ideas," says Director and Animator, Alex Mallinson. "Indeed, the range was Big Finish's first venture back in 1999. So, to celebrate Bernice's eleventh season, we've pushed the boundaries again and produced Big Finish's first animated feature. It's a ten-minute adventure which acts as an introduction not only to the first play of season 11, Resurrecting the Past, but also to the character herself and the range in general.".

For me personally, this started as an exercise to see if it was possible to create a short film. Big Finish is always about doing a lot with limited resources. Everyone worked very hard to make this a success and I'm hugely grateful for their help and encouragement. The real test now though, is whether it's as much fun to watch as it has been to create."

To go with the animation, there we are giving away five high resolution desktop images and a high-quality version of the the story that can be downloaded and burnt to DVD, all this at http://bernicesummerfield.co.uk.

Dead and Buried leads directly into 11.01 Bernice Summerfield: Resurrecting the Past. Season 11 is available for pre-order now.

Briggs in Doctor Who Live

Posted: 25 Aug 2010 09:12 PM PDT

The BBC has issued a press release revealing that our very own executive producer, Nick Briggs, is to appear in Doctor Who Live, the gigantic arena show that will be touring the UK for five weeks during October and November this year.

'When the show was first advertised much earlier this year, I wondered if I might be asked to be involved, since there were Daleks and Cybermen all over the big ads in the newspapers,' explains Nick. 'Then, months later, I did some presenting at a media conference in Sheffield and met the director and producer of the Doctor Who Live show. They told me they would indeed want me to record some voices for them, but the very next day they got in touch to offer me the part of Churchill.'

The tour will take Nick away from his full-time Big Finish duties for eight weeks. 'It's playing merry hell with my Fourth Doctor script-writing schedule, and poor David Richardson is having to do all sorts of re-organizing to accommodate my absence, but we both agreed this was an opportunity I couldn't miss. And naturally, I will be in constant touch with the BF production office by email and phone... and I'll be tap-tapping away on scripts the whole time I'm on tour.'

The star of the show has been announced. Actor Nigel Planer (who many will remember as Neil from The Young Ones), who guest starred in the Big Finish Krynoid adventure Hothouse, will feature as the mysterious owner of the sinister 'minimizer'.

You can find full details of the show atwww.doctorwholive.com.
