"Everyone's Home for Christmas"

The BBC have started to promote the forthcoming Christmas special, A Christmas Carol as part of their "Everyone's Home for Christmas" trailers for Drama, airing on the BBC channels. A number of clips from the story appear in the trailer, though these have all appeared previously in the Doctor Who trailer broadcast during last month's Children in Need.

Doctor, Doctor?

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 07:58 AM PST

WARNING! Here be spoilers!

In fact, there is so much here that we're not even going to tell you what this article is about. All you can do to save yourselves is to avoid reading this article – or go mad trying!

Bear in mind that all of this is based on hearsay and rumour – there is a chance that the linked articles contain considerable spoilerage, so seriously, do click responsibly.

The Doctor will come face to face with his greatest enemy this holiday season – himself.

According to Unreality Primetime, an invading army will clone the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) leaving honeymooner's Rory (Arthur Darvill) and Amy (Karen Gillan) bemused as to which Doctor is the real one and which Doctor's instructions should they follow.

Supposedly it is in this year's Christmas Special A Christmas Carol the Doctor discovers his meddling copy while investigating the alien invasion.

Yet there have been conflicting reports as to which episode this cloned Doctor will appear in. The Unreality Primetime story is not sourced but a similar story did appear in the bastion of journalistic integrity The Daily Star which, while refering to the clone, doesn't mention its appearance in the Christmas special (the piece also refers to new villians 'The Silents'.)

Rather, according to Doctor Who Spoilers,  the clone may feature in Matthew Graham double header The Rebel Flesh and Gangers as part of a dastardly plan involving an office full of clone workers.

The website goes on to speculate that two of the Dream Lords spoilers for Series 6 within The Brilliant Book of Doctor Who could be the clones faux-paus, as it/he attempts to master the Doctors catchphrase, 'Bow-ties are cool':

"Beau Geste is cool"

"Bow Street Runners are cool"

None of this has been confirmed yet by anyone involved in the show but feel free to speculate below.

Who Director's Coronation

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 07:09 AM PST

Popular ITV soap Coronation Street celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and the team behind it are some very familiar faces indeed!

As well as a live episode to be screened this week, there's also been a pre recorded transmission that's seen an almighty explosion in the street that's killed off a few residents thanks to a tram derailing. And all this has been overseen by the show's newest Producer, Phil Collinson!

Phil produced Doctor Who with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner from 2004-2008, giving Who fans some of the greatest and most epic stories ever seen. Assigned to Coronation Street's climactic episode, full of explosions, death, tears and high drama is Graeme Harper- another well known Doctor Who player. Graeme direct classics from the 1980's Doctor episodes such as The Caves of Androzani and Revelation of the Daleks. Most recently, he directed 2009's The Waters of Mars.

And while Phil and Graeme are creating the "real life" action, the behind the scenes visual effects are being created by the clever people at The Mill, the company responsible for all of Doctor Who's visual effects from 2005 onwards! Collinson commented in Doctor Who Magazine:

"It's like a Doctor Who reunion! Working on this is myself, [Doctor Who director] Graeme Harper, [Doctor Who special effects supervisor] Danny Hargreaves and Arwel Wyn Jones from the Doctor Who art department…when I started thinking about what we would do for the 50th, and I knew it was going to be this big and this involved, I…knew who I wanted. The people who will just get you through…

"It is quite relentless and it is a huge disaster! There will always be some nice little elements, things I learnt on Doctor Who, like we can do some big shots from an 80-foot crane and paint in the rest of Weatherfield with CGI."

Coronation Street is now considered the world's longest running soap, thanks to the demise of America's As The World Turns, and it's fantastic to see that so many people that were responsible for bringing back one of television's most national treasures are now overseeing the exciting production of another.

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Coronation Street, the live episode is being shown on Thursday 9th December between 8pm-9pm, tune in!

Meanwhile if you can make it to Manchester this weekend, don't miss out on Corriefest at The Lass O'Gowrie, where you might find an appearance by former Doctor Who producer Phil Collinson as well as The Guv'nor himself, Graeme Harper!

Find out more on the Facebook Corriefest event page, or order tickets now from www.wegottickets.com.

Jenkins on A Christmas Carol

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 06:38 AM PST

Katherine Jenkins has been doing the rounds recently promoting the Christmas Doctor Who as her regular co-stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan engage in shooting scenes for the next series of Doctor Who.

In particular the singer spoke to The Daily Record about A Christmas Carol, which tells the story of a Scrooge type character called Kazran Sardick, the wealthiest man in Sardicktown (can you guess from the name of where he lives?) played by acting legend Michael Gambon (Harry Potter) and how the Doctor enters his life to help the old so and so to change his ways.

"The special is set in a Victorian city and is in the style of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. It's really festive. It has all the excitement of Dr Who [sic] and is an emotional episode that is heartbreaking at times."

And as always, the Doctor Who cast and crew made the guest stars feel very welcome:

"Karen Gillan, Matt and the whole Dr Who [sic] team were absolutely lovely. They are brilliant actors and so is Michael Gambon. That goes without saying…they made me feel very welcome. There was a lot of waiting around, sitting in the trailer while other scenes were being done. Having Michael around was great because he could tell me all these different stories about people like Marlon Brando. He had some great tales..

"The minute I met him, he gave me a big bear hug. He encouraged me by saying I was doing great and I think he would have told me if I was doing something wrong."

Meanwhile you can see more from the lovely Ms Jenkins on her recent BBC Breakfast appearance on Monday, 6th December:

Not long to wait now people, only a few weeks!

Series 5 The Original TV Soundtrack

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 04:59 AM PST

Hot on the heels of the Specials Soundtrack, this 2-disc set from Silva Screen collects 63 pieces from Series 5 and once again proves that Murray Gold is one of the finest composes around at the moment. It would take an age to review each one so here are the selected highlights from this emotional release.

Doctor Who Series 5 SoundtrackIt kicks off with what I consider to be one of the best arrangements of the theme tune so far, Doctor Who Xl is electronic, orchestral and eerie with the bombastic touch that will be heard throughout the season. This is followed by Down To Earth which seems to be an extension from The New Doctor which ended The Specials run. Again it's a loud and truly powerful track which gets you psyched up and ready for the action which would have been unfolding.

Drums play a major part in The Sun's Gone Wibbly taking the score into an experimental trip. With the subtle use of electronic beeps and a brass section being reigned in for once it allows a chorus of finely tuned voices to raise the tempo. The now famous "Pah Pah Pah" ending heralds the new era properly, stamping Matt Smith's mark as the new Doctor.

These themes continue with I Am The Doctor, another crowd pleasing piece that has the full orchestra belting out on all cylinders that add pace to the narrative. Again the gentle introduction of brass returns with the "Pah Pah Pah" trademark fully in place.

Amy's Theme from The Beast Below is just incredible. Playful with a gentle piano that strokes across a velvet voice that simply seem to be making up random "do, do, dos" to accompany it. Child-like until a dark turn towards the end this proves that there was more to Amy than just being another companion and another beautiful composition.

In a totally different world A Useful Striker is a rockier piece retaining the up tempo feel the collection exudes and even has a sort of playfulness to it and sums up episode from which it came, The Lodger. I bet you'll be clapping along towards the end!

The Sad Man With A Box is another piano lead piece and packed with as much melancholy and one track can handle. Slightly hypnotic with a nice use of harp and strings it mixes a soft vocal it builds and builds to a loud and triumphant ending that is as hopeful as it can be and uses the recurring themes heard in the first few tracks.

The final two pieces, I Remember You and Onwards! lead the way for the Christmas Special, holding your hand (well ears anyway) into exciting new adventures that promise more excitement, mystery and brilliantness.

This is another "must have" collection from Murray Gold and the smart conduction of Ben Foster makes sure the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales wring every ounce emotion from it. Joyous and perfectly inventive.

Out now, you can purchase Doctor Who: Series 5 The Original TV Soundtrack from Amazon for just £8.99!

Wenger on Song

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 10:29 PM PST

The recent interview on Crave Online with Doctor Who Executive Producer has thrown up a few clues about the Series 6 arc and the reason for the mid-season break.

More details about this will appear later on Kasterborous – in the meantime let's focus on River Song. Will we find out about her dark secrets straight away?

"No. We're probably not finding that out quite yet, but stay tuned. I think you'll get really great clues in the coming season."

Apart from the lovely Alex Kingston, Piers was carefully coy when talking about any other big names that you may (or may not) see in the new series:

"We've got some really exciting negotiations going on at the moment. We've got Alex Kingston returning for several episodes this year. But at the moment, there's no one I can actually reveal other than Alex."

On the matter of the notorious "split" in the middle of the 2011 season, Wenger remarked that this was deliberate.:

"I think it was basically driven by the story that Steven had in his head. It had a big [story] in the middle of it and I think [Steven] spoke to the drama commissioner of the BBC about that where he figured 'why not build a [structure] that really built to it?'

"It was an excellent opportunity to really get the audience hooked by making it an end of season cliffhanger. We get a three month hiatus between the first part and the second part in the U.K… You're never more than three months away from the next Doctor Who."

Which is great news! No worry or hassle for the series but proof that it's so strong they can split it whichever way they want to best tell a story, is that power or what?

People Roundup

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 06:18 PM PST

Catherine Tate (Donna), Mark Gatiss (actor and writer) and David Troughton (King Peladon, The Curse of Peladon, Professor Hobbes, Midnight) are all appearing in the National Theatre production of Alan Ayckbourn's play Season's Greetings, which opens tonight.

John Barrowman has made a number of appearances on television recently, promoting the release on DVD of "John Barrowman Live At The Royal Albert Hall", and the new 3-CD release of his music, "The Collection"; this included a half-hour stint singing songs from the collection live on shopping channel QVC in November. He will shortly be appearing in Aladdin at the Glasgow SECC.

Barrowman has also become newsworthy in the India media, in association with photos of him apparently kissing Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan backstage during Friday Night with Jonathan Ross back in February!

Former producer Phil Collinson has been subject to media speculation in recent months as to what changes he would make to Coronation Street since becoming its producer, and appeared on Lorraine Kelly yesterday morning, as part of coverage of the aftermath from the show's disaster as part of the show's 50th Anniversary. (The show also saw the work of other Doctor Who 'regulars' under Collinson's reign, effects supervisor Danny Hargreaves and CGI company The Mill).

Carey Mulligan (Sally Sparrow, Blink is playing socialite Daisy Buchanan in the film version of The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann. (Though not confirmed, she is believed to be starring with Leonardo Di Caprio as millionaire Joe Gatsby and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway.)

Mulligan picked up the Best Performance trophy at the Women in Film and TV Awards on Friday (3rd); the event also saw a lifetime achievement award for actress Sheila Hancock (who played Helen A in The Happiness Patrol).

After some eight years in the role, BBC's head of Television Jana Bennett will be moving onto a new role in BBC Worldwide; Bennett is widely credited as the overseer for the return of Doctor Who, and the launch of BBC3 and BBC4, and has recently been acting as controller of BBC1 since Jay Hunt's departure from the role.

And finally, another former BBC1 controller and BBC governor, reformed Doctor Who critic Michael Grade, is in line for a peerage.

Richard III Returns

Posted: 07 Dec 2010 06:10 PM PST

Today in the USA, Thursday in the UK, sees the return of England's best ever King, Richard III, in the pages of Knight and Squire #3. It's been a well known fact for quite a few years now that Richard, despite being portrayed by Shakespeare as a scheming, secretive villain, was actually lovely. So it's a great pleasure for me and artist Jimmy Broxton to bring you 22 pages of him being kind to small children, generous to the poor, and the very model of politeness to our heroes. You can see five pages of this genteel banter here. No, there's no villain in the story, why do you ask? There's no particular battle with anyone. Nor is there an attempt to take over the country by five of Britain's most fiendish cloned superpowered former monarchs by means of social networking. Really.

It's my favourite issue of anything I've written, ever.

In other news, SF Signal kindly asked me to contribute to their Mind Meld feature about the best SF movies of the last decade. I really must get that biography updated, though.

Until next time, Cheerio!
