DVDs You Want For Christmas

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 06:51 AM PST

If you haven't managed to get excited about A Christmas Carol, then you're just a Scrooge Kazran.  But this holiday season, why just have the gift of over-the-air Who when you can give to (or better yet, beg to receive from) a friend or loved one Doctor Who DVDs, to enjoy over and over again?  Here's our list of the top 5 new releases that you'll be hoping to unwrap this Christmas…

5. Revenge of the Cybermen/Silver Nemesis Box Set

Doctor Who Cyberman DVD boxsetThere are two Cyberman stories in this package; one of them, Revenge of the Cybermen, is a Tom Baker tale with Lis Sladen and Ian Marter as Sarah Jane and Harry, and the other, Silver Nemesis, is a Sylvester McCoy narrative with Sophie Aldred's Ace.  The former was raised by the loving Auntie Beeb, while the latter was brought up by the same Aunt, who by now had dealt with so many children that she became abusive, ready to strike down Doctor Who at any given moment.

And sure, Nemesis doesn't have the best reputation, but it was the 25th Anniversary Special, which qualifies the story for an automatic collector's-item stamp.  And remember, Prince Edward isn't there.

4. The Dominators

Doctor Who - The DominatorsThree words: Quarks & Patrick Troughton.  Ampersands aren't words, so yes, that counts.

In case you weren't alive in 1968, The Dominators sees the Second Doctor, Zoe, and Jamie on the planet Dulkis, where a couple of titular Dominators and their Quarky servants are… dominating.  But the Dulcians don't want to dominate back, so the Doctor and company try to convince them otherwise…  You just have to see it!

3. The Complete Specials

If you've already acquired the Series 2, 3, and 4 box sets, then all you need to complete your David Tennant collection is this.

Doctor Who - The Complete Specials starring David TennantFive specials, at least an hour long each: one for Easter, two for Christmas, one for New Year's, and one for mid-November (rejoice!), not in that order.

If you haven't seen them yet, you're either anti-New-Who, which is fine, or you're simply new to Who, in which case make sure you've seen Series 1-4 before you pop this in your player.  Notice we didn't specifically say DVD player, because The Complete Specials is the first box set release to appear on DVD and Blu-ray!  On top of the episodes, you also get a Doctor Who Confidential to go with each, deleted scenes with Russell T. Davies, commentaries, the original Doctor Who Prom, and Special Project 3 itself – BBC Christmas idents – among other features.

2. Series 5 Box Set Limited Edition

Doctor Who Series 5 boxsetIt's kind of a given that Series 5 should go on the list; after all, it's a whole season of Who that wasn't available last Christmas… in fact, the concept of unwrapping these discs on December 25th was doubtless part of the reasoning behind the November release.  Like The Complete Specials, you have the option of getting this set containing every episode from The Eleventh Hour to The Big Bang on DVD or Blu-ray.  The Limited Edition comes in a fancy tin case, and in addition to special features like The Monster Files, Meanwhile in the TARDIS scenes, Doctor Who Confidential cut-downs and more, you'll also get a special collector's booklet with a foreword from executive producer Steven Moffat and four art cards.  Rumour has it that, like a few of the previous new series DVD sets, the illustrative genius of Kasterborous' own Anthony Dry might make an appearance.

1. Revisitations 1 Box Set

Doctor Who - Revisitations Volume 1 DVDWhat's not to drool over in this box?  There's Tom Baker's much-loved The Talons of Weng-Chiang and Peter Davison's popular The Caves of Androzani in which the Fifth Doctor's attachment to celery, or rather said celery's attachment to the Fifth Doctor, is properly explained within hours of his death.  Last but definitely not least, you can finally start and complete your Paul McGann DVD collection in one stroke with 1996's The TV Movie.  The first Revisitations set contains not one, not two, but seven discs in all, four of which (hear that? four!) are there solely for special features.  There's so much pure, unadulterated stuff in this set that it took Kasterborous three wonderfully lengthy reviews, one for each story, to do it justice!  You'll have your Who appetite satisfied for months!

We know you probably already wrote your letter to Santa months ago, but just in case you left any of these out, you may wish to send him a quick telegram.

Adventure Flips!

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 06:17 AM PST

A thrilling new series of Doctor Who fiction is set for release from February 3rd, 2011 – and it looks like being the most exciting collection of Doctor Who books yet!

With two fast-paced, fun-filled adventures in one book, Doctor Who devotees won't be able to resist getting immersed into the world of the Eleventh Doctor and sharing in his thrilling escapades. Plus, the books are double-fronted fans can start with whichever story they like, then flip the book over and read the next one!

Death Riders, Heart of Stone, The Good, the Bad and the Alien and System Swipe are the first four books in the series and are guaranteed to keep Doctor Who fans hooked. Each book features an action-packed adventure with the Doctor and his trusted friends, Rory Williams and Amy Pond.

It seems that trouble is never far away when these three are together, and in each book they must face a new challenge – defeating monsters made from moon rock in Heart of Stone, solving the dark mystery at the Galactic Fair in Death Riders, conquering the evil aliens in The Good, the Bad and the Alien, and helping the Doctor to escape from a virtual world in System Wipe.

Once you've read these, make sure you collect the other four books in the series publishing throughout the year.

Tom Baker Goodies!

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 05:33 AM PST

Tom Baker and Doctor Who fans alike, here are a couple of Christmas gifts that you'll want to find under the tree this year!

The 2011 Tom Baker calendar is available for purchase for £9.99 and will give you 12 new and very informal pictures of Tom to keep you company next year. You can also grab an autographed calendar for £15.00. Kasterborous previously reported that this would be available and now finally you can get your hands on one.

Also available from the Tom Baker official website is an audio recording, read by Baker himself, of his novel The Boy Who Kicked Pigs. Available from www.silksoundbooks.com it is described as:

"The Boy Who Kicked Pigs, written and read by the great Tom Baker is a gruesome, but hilariously funny story about the fate of a boy with a habit of kicking pigs who causes havoc in the community around him…the book is illustrated by David Roberts whose black ink sketches reflect the bizarre world of Robert Caligari, the boy antihero of the story. Some of these illustrations feature in this download.

"To date, The Boy Who Kicked Pigs is Tom's only published work apart from his autobiography - Who on Earth is Tom Baker?

"The Boy Who Kicked Pigs remains in print and is published in a number of different forms – from presentation hardback to paperback – and has been translated into 8 other languages – including Chinese! This very special audiobook includes an introduction by Tom in which he explains some of the background to this gruesome tale."

The book is full of Tom's usually weird and wonderful offerings and is truly a delight to listen to, so get purchasing now. To find out more details on how to order these goodies, visit www.tom-baker.co.uk

TARDIS Landings

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 02:33 AM PST

The TARDIS has returned to Portmeirion for the Christmas period! Talking to the Daily Post, Estates Manager Meurig Jones said:
This is not the first time we have had a visit from the Tardis at Portmeirion. An episode was filmed here in 1976 when Tom Baker was the Doctor, called Mask of the Dragon (The Masque of Mandragora).

We hope that Doctor Who fans will come and have a look at the Tardis and take in the sights at Portmeirion.

Portmeirion is popular with visitors during the winter months, and we have a Santa's grotto too. Who knows we may even see some Daleks or Cybermen around as well!

The police box will be on-site until the 3rd January 2011.

Meanwhile, the Lynn News reports that another police box is materialising in Kings Lynn today, as part of a local police "Town Talk" event to provide information and advice to people in the town's Vancouver Centre.

As reported last week, some twenty-two police boxes were seen packed onto lorries, off to a mysterious destination.

Torch, Wood & Peasants

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 02:20 AM PST

A new book Torch, Wood and peasants tells the tale of the script to screen process that a Torchwood story goes through…and how it can sometimes go wrong.

Told in a positive tone rather than negative, the book not only includes an unmade script for Doctor Who spin off Torchwood but also details how sometimes things don't always go to plan and certain scripts can end up simply being replaced. The description of the book reads:

When a major network successfully re-launched a hit family SF show, they were anxious to find a post-watershed spin-off as soon as possible to cater for the fans who had grown up with their original series, but now wanted a more adult version of the same thrills. The bulk of this book contains an original commissioned script intended for broadcast that never saw the light of day. The rest of the book tells the story of how that script was commissioned, edited, re-edited and re-commissioned only to eventually disappear without trace; an insider viewpoint on how the television industry works as seen from a writer's perspective. 'Torch, Wood and Peasants' contains the script and behind-the-scenes story of an entirely fictitious television program and bears no relation to any real show of a vaguely similar name… honest guvnor.

But imagine, if you will, a well known writer in both TV Drama and Comic Books was in the above position, his name bandied all over the online community as a key writer on a prospective new hit show. The commissioning process turns out to be a nightmare of confusion that results in a finished script that never gets used. Over the years, people constantly ask the writer about the experience and what the script was about, until eventually the writer decides to self-publish the script along with a potted behind-the-scenes history of the formation of a TV show, the commissioning process and ultimately what went wrong. It's not a bitter book by any means; the writer approaches the experience with good humour, but just in case, names and locations are disguised throughout both script and back story to protect the innocent and avoid any tricky copyright issues.

This 'could' be the story of 'Torch, Wood & Peasants', Webley Wildfoot 'could' be a pseudonym for Si Spencer. Who knows?"

For anyone who's a fan of Torchwood, this is essential reading and is available from www.lulu.com. Meanwhile www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk is giving away two copies to lucky winners.

All you have to do is answer the following question correctly:

What service's uniform coat does Captain Jack Harkness normally wear?

So go and visit their website to be in with a chance of winning a copy.

(Thanks to Matt)

People Roundup (a tale of three Doctors)

Posted: 09 Dec 2010 12:42 AM PST

Former Doctor David Tennant joined a number of celebrities (including current James Bond actor Daniel Craig and singer Geri Halliwell) who took to the ICAP trading floor in order to raise money for Prince Charles's charities, Youth Business International and Prince's Teaching Institute.

Having announced having a role in the forthcoming The Hobbit film back in October, the official press conference for the film formally confirms Sylvester McCoy as playing wizard Radagast the Brown; other names in the film include Martin Freeman (who plays Watson in Steven Moffat's other popular show Sherlock), Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, and the return of Cate Blanchett (who played Elven Queen Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings trilogy).

Christopher Eccleston attended a special charity screening of what he has called his most important work, Hillsborough, after which he gave a 30 minute discussion about the film with attendees; the actor had nominated the drama to be shown as part of fund-raising for the Clapperboard Youth Project.

Writer Stephen Gallagher (Warriors Gate, Terminus) will be writing and producing a new drama for Fox Television: The Danger List will be a medical thriller in which a doctor with a complicated past investigates medical abuses, crimes and conspiracies.

The latest star to join the Doctor Who 'family', Sir Michael Gambon (in this year's Christmas special A Christmas Carol), is in the Stage's shortlist for the Greatest Stage Actor; the public poll also includes the likes of Sir Ian McKellen, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Laurence Olivier, Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith.

The Happiness Patrol podcast episode 47

For what feels like for the longest time, we have been trying to get Lewis Bailey to join us on an episode Doctor Who: Podshock. Lewis does a podcast called The Happiness Patrol @TheHPatrol along with Dale Who @FishCustard2010 , Tara Wheeler @TARDIS_Tara (who you may also know as a Corespondent for Doctor Who: Podshock), and Lela Sandstrom @LelaSandstrom, due to scheduling reasons it never worked out. He has been also trying to get me on The Happiness Patrol as well for a while and for the same reason, it hadn't worked. Although we had Lewis on an episode in a recorded segment at the Doctor Who: Podshock 5th Anniversary Event we held last August as well on an episode from Gallifrey 21 last February in Los Angeles at our Meet & Greet Event there, this is the first time we have him on our show in a studio setting for Doctor Who: Podshock - Episode 230 along with Dale, Tara, and Lela. Popular BBC 2 quiz show Eggheads will play host to a special Doctor Who themed episode this December.

If you haven't seen the show, the format is this: champions from other quiz shows form a regular, daily team and face off in a series of rounds with various challengers. Competing against the Egghead regulars will be the Sixth Doctor Colin Baker alongside Frazer Hines (Jamie McCrimmon), Louise Jameson (Leela), Katy Manning (Jo Grant) and John Leeson (voice of K-9.)

The special will be in aid of charity and will air Monday 20th December at 6pm.
