| Doctor Who: Weird and Wonderful Posted: 11 Dec 2010 11:33 AM PST Weird and Wonderful is a round-up of the some of the other Doctor Who bits and bobs from around the web in the week. Lego WhoSurely, Lego Doctor Who is just waiting to happen? In the meantime, artist Ulises Farinas brought the idea to life with this great pic that features almost all the pivotal characters and monsters since the show returned in 2005. Can you name them all? | ||

| Share your 2010 highlights and favourite memories! Posted: 11 Dec 2010 10:37 AM PST 2010 has been another great year for Doctor Who fans. In January, we said a tearful farewell to one Doctor and said hello to another one, and since then there's been more shocks and surprises than a blind date with a Dalek! To help us prepare for the start of 2011, we've been getting nostalgic by taking a fond look back over the last [...] | ||

| Posted: 11 Dec 2010 10:00 AM PST We're continuing our Year in Review today as we take a fond look back at the second half of 2010! Even though there was no series on our screens, there was still plenty to keep us occupied, as the spectacular arena show, Doctor Who Live, began its tour around the UK, and Sarah Jane and the gang returned to our screens for the [...] | ||
| TV trailer for A Christmas Carol begins airing! Posted: 11 Dec 2010 09:42 AM PST Now that there's just a fortnight to go until A Christmas Carol has its long awaited debut in the UK, a TV trailer for the festive episode is now airing on the BBC! Although it's a shortened down version of last month's Children in Need preview, each time we see it we can't help but tingle with excitement. It also [...] | ||
| A Christmas Carol kicks off BBC's Christmas Posted: 11 Dec 2010 05:55 AM PST Tonight the BBC commenced their Christmas idents for the 2010 season on television, launching with the trailer for A Christmas Carol, airing just before Strictly Come Dancing at 6:00pm. This is a shorter version of the preview trailer that was aired during Children in Need back in November, but confirms the time and date of broadcast, previously reported as 6:00pm on Christmas Day. The trailer is available to watch on the BBC's YouTube channel, and also from the BBC's official Doctor Who site as Day Eleven in their Christmas Adventure Calendar. | ||
| Posted: 11 Dec 2010 04:28 AM PST A few years ago, when the BBC released this adventure onto VHS I couldn't afford to buy it. Feeling a tad down I was walking with my fiancĂ© through our local shopping centre and found two £10 HMV vouchers lying crumpled on the floor.
So guess what I did with the vouchers…? Anyway, I mention this because The Seeds Of Doom is one of those adventures that has always stuck in mind as being a classic and the VHS was a favourite release of mine. Would it stand up today though? It's the 20th century and on Earth a research team based in the Antarctic unwittingly dig up two mysterious pods which have lain buried in the snow for twenty thousand years. Yet the identity of the pods is no mystery to the Doctor, they are Krynoid, a hostile, alien species of life. The Doctor's fears are confirmed when one of the pods opens and attacks a scientist. Unfortunately, the Doctor is not the only one interested in the seeds – an insane millionaire, Harrison Chase, is desperate to get his hands on a pod at any cost – even murder. But why? As the remaining pod hurtles to England, splitting open to reveal a ferocious Krynoid carnivore, can the Doctor arrest its development? As its strength grows every moment, it threatens to turn Earth's vegetation hostile too. Its germination could jeopardize the security of mankind itself. The Seeds Of Doom is Doctor Who gold! Time may have withered the ropey vegetation effects but the story and acting are just sublime. For starters Tom is nearing the top of his game here, delivering each line with passion, enthusiasm and heart. He is given more action style sequences here, being more dynamic than before. Tony Beckley is just sublime as the villain Harrison Chase. His sequence when playing his music is a classic moment of Who gently touching other genres. John Challis as the tough evil side-kick Scorby is terrific with a smart sense of darkness to his often humorous character. The sets are as solid looking as you'd want them to be and the whole production is steeped in a sort of Quatermass atmosphere. The location of Athelhampton adds so much to the story and keeps it all looking so authentic. As meantioned, the effects (obviously) are slightly weak but I do recall seeing this first time around and being rather disturbed by the organic creations. The end pieces are well realised and quite funky for their time. Disc 1 Extras:Commentary – Tom Baker, John Challis, Kenneth Gilbert, Michael McStay, Philp Hinchcliffe, Robert Banks Stewart, Roger Murray-Leach and Joggs Camfield (son of the late director Douglas Camfield). It's a light, jovial affair with Tom on top form and we do get an insight into his knowledge of acting as well as the fun he had playing the character. Isolated Music – The option to watch the story with just the score playing, a nice touch and one of the strongest soundtracks from the series. Subtitle Production Notes – Essential viewing, have these running as soon as you can. Disc 2 Extras:Podshock – This is a cracking, straight-forward making of with most of the cast and crew talking heartily about the story's production. The newly created CGI backgrounds add to it and even flakes of snow fly past the interviewees. Philip Hinchliffe, Robert Banks Stewart, Kenneth Gilbert and John Challis amongst others are on hand to voice their opinion of the production. The tale of the biting dog is one to listen out for! Now And Then – The long running location series continues with a visit to Athelhampton House, a quarry in Reigate and BBC Television Centre. A nice piece with excellent use of script directions to see how certain sequences were shot. Playing In The Green Cathedral – Composer Geoffrey Burgon chats about how he became involved with scoring this story and the problems that arose from it. Though this isn't the best part as I enjoyed hearing the short piece about how he got into TV music composing. Trail And Continuity – Off-air trail for the first part and continuity for the fifth all mix to make a wonderful and warm minute and a twenty seconds of nostalgia. Photo Gallery – A collection of snaps from the production of the story which is for hardcore fans only. Coming Soon – A trailer for the forthcoming DVD release of Meglos. Very dramatic, very atmospheric and makes it look very good. PDF Materials – Pop the disc into your PC or Mac and you can scan over the original Radio Times listings and Douglas Camfield's paper edit that was created for a compilation version of the story. Easter Egg – Not telling! So then, The Seeds Of Doom is a Doctor Who classic in every sense of the word this should be at the top of your Christmas list. Out now with an RRP of £19.99 you can get The Seeds of Doom for just £12.99

| Posted: 11 Dec 2010 01:22 AM PST Two brand new screencaps from Doctor Who: The Mazes of Time have been posted on the official Doctor Who Facebook page! If you can't wait until the pre-Christmas release of this iOS-based game, you can at least whet your appetite a little more with our massive two-image gallery below: As you can see, one image sees Amy standing on Harry Potter's scar while in danger of being deleted by Cybermen, and the other depicts a rather big-footed Doctor encountering a red Dalek Drone. Haven't seen the video footage yet? Here's a little of The Mazes of Time in action! Doctor Who: The Mazes of Time will be available on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad in time for the holidays, and may eventually also appear on devices running Android. | ||

| Posted: 10 Dec 2010 09:57 PM PST Karen Gillan spoke to The Guardian's fashion pages recently, and copy appears online today in what can be described as a "brief encounter". We don't normally feature quotes from entire external interviews on Kasterborous, mainly because it's stealing, but also because it looks iffy. However in this case you will have to forgive us as the interview of the Guardian website is a tad short… Apparently on the day of the interview and shoot, Karen had been up since 4am, part and parcel of being a star of Doctor Who, it seems.
Interestingly, Ms Gillan hadn't planned on being an actress, with her first love of music taking priority. I don't think we'll be getting a glimpse of a Katherine Jenkins/Karen Gillan duet in A Christmas Carol, however.
Normally at this point we would say "for the full interview, visit The Guardian" – however, you just read the full interview. Very shoddy, Grauniad, very shoddy.

| Posted: 10 Dec 2010 09:43 PM PST Former Doctor Colin Baker is appearing at the Kennet Centre in Newbury today, signing copies of his books based on his column in the Bucks Free Press, Look Who's Talking and Second Thoughts. Filming continues on United (a film about the Manchester United team Munich plane disaster in 1958), which features David Tennant as assistant team manager Jimmy Murphy. Last week saw them filming at Carlisle United's Brunton Park, where their media officer Andy Hall said: "A couple of us had the chance to squint at a couple of pages of script that David Tennant was practising and it was powerful stuff. We thought David Tennant wouldn't speak to us but he talked about Doctor Who and other stuff he has done. I don't get starstruck often but it's not every day you are set opposite a Time Lord. He said he was not much of a football fan but he's from Paisley and said he looks out for St Mirren's scores." (reported in the News and Star) Filming also commenced yesterday in Bolton on Exile, a new BBC drama starring John Simm (The Master) and Jim Broadbent (The Doctor, The Curse of Fatal Death); the drama is a psychological thriller about the return of a journalist (Simm) to his hometown to be reacquainted with his father (Broadbent). David Morrissey (Jackson Lake, The One Doctor) will be one of the Final judges for the 2010 Costa Book of the Year; the winners are chosen and announced on 25th January 2011. The Daily Mail has reported that Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) could be about to play Eliza Doolittle in a West End version of George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion. Other members of the cast could be Rupert Everett (reprising his role as Henry Higgins from the Chichester Festival Theatre production), Angela Lansbury and David Jason. Bonnie Langford: Christmas in New York opens at 59E59 Theaters on the 14th December; part of the Brits Off Broadway festival, the show sees the star (who played Melanie Bush) perform songs from shows she has appeared in, and talk about the people she grew up with in her showbiz career. Michael Gambon (Kazran, A Christmas Carol) is about to appear in his first US television series in a new drama from HBO called Luck; the show stars Dustin Hoffman, and follows the ins and outs of horse racing. | ||
| Posted: 10 Dec 2010 09:08 PM PST You might recall that iPhone Doctor Who news app WhoNews is donating current revenue to charity – well we've got a new update from developer Paul Gee concerning recent totals and a small enforced change to the fundraising. The initial fundraising activity was for a "wish giving" charity and this amounted to £661.72/$1043.14 – proving the popularity of WhoNews and the quest to raise funds for this cause. Funds will be transferred to the associated charities in each country that the app was purchased in. An enforced change to the fundraising however has resulted in a new charity being targeted – and from 9th – 23rd December all profits from WhoNews will be going to Cure Leukaemia, a charity that enables patients access to potentially life saving, ground breaking drugs and treatments. The charity supports the Haematology Centre at the University Hospital, Birmingham, UK. Cure Leukaemia are delighted to be receiving support from WhoNews and the Who army. While the appeal only has 2 weeks left, this is stilla good opportunity to show your support if you haven't already and aid a second charity in raising awareness of this campaign. With iTunes you can send WhoNews as a gift to family or friends while donating at the same time. This is easily done by visiting WhoNews in iTunes and rather than clicking Buy App, click the little arrow to the right and select Gift App. (Thanks to Paul) | ||

| Posted: 10 Dec 2010 07:30 PM PST Thanks to Twitter, Torchwood fans now know that regular supporting cast members Tom Price (you would hardly refer to him as a "star", Digital Spy) and Kai Owen have been cast to reprise their characters of PC Andy Davidson and Gwen Cooper's spouse Rhys Williams. With a mobile phone and a cheeky attitude mind you can cause all sorts of mischief on Twitter – if it's not releasing so-called state secrets then its poking fun at your colleagues! Price Tweeted earlier this week:
I'm not sure, but watch out for those TSA scanners. As you probably know by now, Torchwood Series 4 – dubbed The New World – is being partially filmed in the place we once called "The New World", the erstwhile "Land of the Free", the United States of America. Meanwhile Kai Owen – put-upon Rhys – was also Tweeting his return to the show, observing :
And in an hilarious riposte, Tom Price later replied:
Oh, my aching sides… Torchwood Series 4 enters production in the New Year with scenes filmed in both Cardiff and various spots in North America. (Via Digital Spy)

Taken from the 1984 adventure Vengeance on Varos, the set contains Sil, the nasty little Mentor from the planet Thoros Beta and Peri who travelled with the Fifth and Sixth Doctors. This particular set has modelled Sil from when viewers first saw him with a slightly duller shade of green complexion and with a bigger head (how exactly did his head change shape and size between Vengeance on Varos and Mindwarp exactly?!!). Peri is in one of her more revealing outfits from her time on the show. The set is a must have for any collectors of this series, is available for pre order now priced at £24.99 and will ship from 10th December 2010, just in time for Christmas day! The set is exclusive to those in the UK and Ireland only we're afraid. For more information on how to order, visit www.forbiddenplanet.com

In it, they tell us about Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol and Gillan promises that Michael Gambon will make us cry. Aside from that, there's nothing really new here, but you may want to check it out.
