Doctor Who - BBC Video Catchup

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 11:45 AM PST

A number of videos have been released on the BBC website in the last couple of days relating to publicity for the Christmas special, A Christmas Carol; these appeared on BBC news programmes, but are sometimes extended versions online.

In this video, Matt Smith talks to Lizo Mzimba about his thoughts on the Christmas special, during which he was asked if he felt any pressure over ratings with previous specials doing so well at Christmas:
I hope it continues to do well, I really do. Yeah, but I can't really feel any pressure for it because I've done it now, I've made it, so c'est la vie, what will be will be, it's out of my control. But I think it's a great episode and it will be a nice way to spend it with someone.
Matt was also very surprised to find out that he'd been known as the Doctor for nigh on two years:
"Is it really? Blimey oh Riley. God, that's a long time, isn't it! It's whizzed by I suppose because we're very busy up in Cardiff, but, yeah it's been a wonderful two years, it's been a privilege to play it, I have to say, and it's been a great experience for me, it really has."
The video includes several brief scenes from A Christmas Carol.

Children's news programme Newsround featured a truncated version of the above video, which was broadcast during their television bulletins. Here, Matt talked about emotional impact of the special:
It's a very Christmassy Doctor Who, and I think that Stephen (Moffat) has interpreted and managed the spirits of the Doctor. Particularly in the retelling of classical stories, anyway; if you look back at the classic stories that tend to hit us over Christmas, a lot of the great ones do pull at the heart strings.

As reported earlier tonight, Katherine Jenkins visited her old primary school in the afternoon. During this video, she was asked how she found filming for her first acting role in a BBC Wales production:
Well we filmed it over about three/four weeks, in Wales of course, and so that was lovely because I was able to come home and see the family. It's challenging in so many ways because I'd never done any green screen stuff either, so all the sleigh/carriage stuff, the flying scenes ... when you're just in a room with a fan and having to scream on tap, you know, it was sometimes quite wierd. But lots of fun, cos I was in the carriage sometimes with Matt, and sometimes with Michael Gambon and so we had a really good laugh.

I cannot thank them enough, the whole Doctor Who family have been brilliant at making me feel very welcome and making me feel like I could do this. Matt is so energetic and so enthusiastic, and I kept thinking I when was doing scenes with Sir Michael Gambon, "how has this happened, how am I acting here across from Dumbledore" - it was just a very surreal moment.

This is my debut, and for it to be such a typically Welsh show, I think that was part as well in making me feel so at ease, because most of the crew are Welsh-based. Yeah, it was really, really lovely and I've got great memories of it and I don't think I could have done it without everyone being involved.

Monday saw television critic Alison Graham on BBC's Breakfast chatting about what she thinks are the programmes to watch over Christmas; Doctor Who was of course one of her favourites, which she discusses in this video segment from the programme.
The special I thought was lovely, it was very, very, very Christmassy, it was snowy, based on A Christmas Carol, so can't get more Christmassy! One man has the power to rescue everybody, but he's Michael Gambon, a very Scrooge type, so the ghost of Christmas past, who's the Doctor, comes in and tries to make him see the error of his ways. I loved it, quite warmed my heart!

Finally, Catherine Tate appeared on the Andrew Marr Show on Sunday morning; in this video she briefly talks about her experience with meeting Daleks!

Win the Eleventh Doctor Christmas Adventure Set!

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 07:53 AM PST

The Doctor Who News Page is offering readers a chance to win the Eleventh Doctor Christmas Adventure Set which is released next week, in our Christmas Competition.

The set includes two 5-inch action figures: The Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond with police uniform and also features a non-electronic TARDIS with opening front doors.

Five Gift sets are up for grabs.

To be in with a chance of winning, simply tell us your prediction for the total BBC One audience, to the nearest 10,000 viewers, for the Christmas Day showing of A Christmas Carol.

Just to clarify, we are looking for the final confirmed audience as published by BARB in January. This figure includes those who record the programme and watch it within one week and it includes those watching on BBC One HD. It does not include those watching on iPlayer.

Please also give your estimate for the final figure for the BBC Three/BBC HD Christmas Day showing of Doctor Who Confidential. This figure will be used as a tie breaker in the event of a draw for the prize. In the event of a further draw the winner will be chosen at random.

To help you estimate the figure, ratings for the previous episodes of Doctor Who transmitted on Christmas Day were:

1965 - 5.50pm - The Feast of Steven - 7.90 million
2005 - 7.00pm - The Christmas Invasion - 9.84 million
2006 - 7.00pm - The Runaway Bride - 9.30 million
2007 - 6.50pm - Voyage of the Damned - 13.31 million
2008 - 6.00pm - The Next Doctor - 13.10 million
2009 - 6.00pm - The End of Time Part One - 12.04 million

Entries should be sent to the Doctor Who News Page at doctorwhocompetitions@gmail.com - please include your answers, name, address and daytime contact number.

Only one entry is allowed per person.

Entries must be received by 6pm, 25th December 2010 UK Time.

An early Christmas Carol for Katherine Jenkins's old school

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 06:41 AM PST

A Christmas Special treat came early at the Alderman Davies Primary School in Neath today. This was the school a young Katherine Jenkins attended as a child, and the singer returned there this afternoon to watch a special showing of her acting debut in A Christmas Carol alongside current pupils and staff.

Afterwards, she spent time answering questions with her young fans.

The visit was covered on tonight's Wales Today, and you can watch a longer version of their report on the BBC Wales News website.

Adventure Calendar 2010

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 02:45 AM PST

Given that it's been online for a couple of weeks now, we reckon we should acknowledge the existence of the third annual Doctor Who Adventure Calendar on the BBC Website.

For those who don't remember the last two years, take off the "ure" off "Adventure Calendar" and that's essentially what you get – a countdown to Christmas, Doctor Who style!

Highlights this year so far include an updated version of last year's conversation game Doctor in the House (don't tell us you didn't play it), a quiz involving lots and lots of fezzes, a couple of slide shows screensavers, and interviews with Dalek/Cyberman/Judoon voice Nick Briggs, Dalek operator Barnaby Edwards, Adventure Games writer Phil Ford, and Katherine Jenkins herself, Katherine Jenkins.  In true Christmas spirit, these interviews will reveal to you that Briggs once attended a Halloween party dressed as a zombie vicar.  And Barnaby Edwards went to a fancy dress party as a mummy.  And Phil Ford went to one as… oh just go find out for yourself!

The BBC also promises some "stunning" new images from Shadows of the Vashta Nerada, the Christmas Adventure Game, later this week.

We're sure the best is yet to come for the Adventure Calendar, with more Whovian goodness headed our way in these last couple of weeks leading up to December 25th, otherwise known as A Christmas Carol broadcast day!

Doctor Who in the Third Dimension!

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 12:55 AM PST

3D-TV is missing content and what better way to fill the void (other than filling it) is to speculate on what could fill the dead air.

Recently, big 3D-TV advocate Panasonic (its VT20 series sets were one of the first to be available when sets were released in April) ran a poll annoucing that Doctor Who is the program most people would like to see flying into their faces.

And the deciding factor in having pollsters carte blance choice on HD screens and having anything on 3D-TV is money- and the flithy lucre is fading from the 3D fade.

Ticket sales have been declining since Avatar's massive haul set a high benchmark. With a surplus of at least £3 added to ticket prices cinema-goers are unwilling to pay what could amount to £10 per person to watch a film through cumbersome glasses (for a laugh, its always fun to place a finger on the receptor in the centre of the glasses thus ruining another persons 3D experience) that add nothing to the experience other than gaudy distraction.

Not to mention the standard of films that have been converted to the third dimension; Cats & Dogs 2 anyone? G-Force? Hello? Step Up 3-D? (Why are all 3-D films kids films? Do parents have money to burn on films? )

Production costs are the reason for the hike in ticket prices which begs the question; who's going to foot the bill for 3D-TV?

The extra time it takes to set up for 3-D photography means more expense in labour, technology and development. Think back to 2005 when you first saw the effects for Doctor Who compared to the state of the art movies released that year – War of the Worlds, King Kong, Star Wars-Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - now imagine that gulf in spending power/R & D in the third dimension?

Co-production is a possibility. The BBC are already developing a 3-D movie of Walking with Dinosaurs with US based Evergreen Films – but without a policy on 3D spending that won't ruffle the Daily Mail's feathers, how will the corporation justify it?

Kasterborous readers have already spoken loud and articulately on the issue of the Time Lord 3-D with 23Skiddoo pointing out that narrative cohesion and immersion are often forgotten when the specs are slid over audiences eyes.

Rick714 also agreed, though praised the experience of watching Avatar but again not the story.

So what do you think of 3D and would you like to see the TARDIS crashing into your face?

Comment and share.

Matt's Christmas Cheer

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 11:00 PM PST

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has been dying to make a Christmas special episode – and his dreams were realiased when production completed on A Christmas Carol.

At Monday evening's BFI screening of the 2010 Christmas special, Smith declared himself "pleased and proud" of the end product.

"I think we achieved something – I don't know what that is – I hope people have enjoyed it."

We're sure the lucky preview screening audience did enjoy it -  but it seems that Matt is also realistic about areas where the regular cast and production team have to develop…

"I think we're going to get better. I think we know the areas we can improve and the ways in which we want to improve.

"It's been a learning curve. A very brilliant and informative journey for me professionally and personally. It's something I shall not forget."

Interesting comments from the star of the show – looks like Series 6/Season 32 is going to be something to behold!

To begin with, they describe A Christmas Carol as "a tour de force for Matt Smith" who "explodes like a force of nature from the screen," which sounds either wonderful or slightly worrying. Meanwhile there is a continuity reference to Pyramids Of Mars, but the biggest surprise might just be the fact that Katherine Jenkins is "really very good."

Typically for a Moffat script the episode is laced with humour, with "more witty, quotable lines per minute than ever before" and the seasonal nature of the story sees the opening titles decorated appropriately, it would seem.

Finally, SFX describe the episode as "fish and ships for Christmas!" which is no doubt a reference to the shark which according to The Guardian was codenamed "Clive" during filming!

A Glass of Wine for the Lady

Opera singer and blonde bombshell Katherine Jenkins has spoken about her concern about reactions to her acting ability – A Christmas Carol is the Doctor Who guest star's first screen role.

She also said that she would be enjoying a "large glass of wine" before watching the episode when it goes out.

"I haven't had any training and I've not really had any experience of this kind of thing," she said.

Following the BFI preview showing on Monday evening, we now know a few more details about the Christmas special which is based on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Spoiler time for the sensitive among you…

Sir Michael Gambon's Kazran Sardick is, it turns out, a rich and naturally lonely "Scrooge" who has control of the sky. To prove how rotten he is, he has frozen Jenkins' character Abigail Pettigrew simply because her family cannot afford to pay their debts.

All of this hooks together nicely, we expect, with the fact that accoridng to clips Amy and Rory are on board a crashing spacecraft… To top it all off, the Doctor must some how defeat a flying shark.

Katherine Jenkins seems to have been suitably encouraged while on set – so there might be a chance of a repeat performance from a lady we can now call a "singer/actress".

"Everyone in the whole Doctor Who team was brilliant and so encouraging and supportive that they made me feel like I could do it," she said.

"By the end, I had a ball and I think that has now opened my mind to thinking if the right thing came along maybe I would like to do it again."

Now if you don't know this next bit, you really need to read Kasterborous a little more often: A Christmas Carol airs on Christmas Day at 6pm on BBC One and BBC HD!
