| Torchwood Casting: Bill Pullman Posted: 15 Dec 2010 09:48 AM PST Hot on the heels of news about Mekhi Phifer being cast yesterday, today Deadline reports long-time Hollywood actor Bill Pullman will be joining the cast of Torchwood: The New World. He will be playing one of the lead roles in the series, that of the psychotic Oswald Jones.Like Phifer, Pullman was born in New York (1953). Starting out in the theatre, he made the move to the big screen in the 1986 film Ruthless People (with Bette Midler and Danny De Vito); he quickly rose to lead role status the following year in the Mel Brooks sci-fi spoof Spaceballs, and he has since been involved in a number of successful films, including Sleepless in Seattle, While You Were Sleeping, and Casper. However, his sci-fi credentials are probably best represented in what is possibly his highest profile role, portraying President of the United States Thomas Whitmore in the Will Smith/Jeff Goldblum blockbuster, Independence Day. On television, he is best known for playing Harvard scientist and astrophysicist Bill Massey in the supernatural thriller series Revelations. OSWALD JONES Oswald Jones is dangerously clever, a psychotic, convicted murderer and paedophile. He escapes his lifelong prison sentence on a technicality and quickly becomes a media sensation. Genuinely repentant yet boiling with lust and rage, Oswald gets caught up in a terrifying worldwide crisis. | ||

| Karen Gillan in Shortlist Magazine Posted: 15 Dec 2010 07:40 AM PST Karen Gillan is featured on the front cover of this week's Shortlist Magazine. You can read the full interview online (pages 40-44). Karen also took part in a photo shoot for the magazine, some of these can be viewed below. How does it feel being a role model? That's a tricky one. You've got to get the right balance I think. You can't live your life thinking about how it's going to affect everybody else. You've got to have your own life and do what you want to do, but it is something I take into consideration and I wouldn't want to fall around drunk or anything. What's it like working with Matt [Smith]? Matt is so focused he really inspires me. That sounds really cheesy, but it's true. I've never met someone so focused and he never slacks off. He's really driven. And his approach to acting is really creative. Rather than just reeling off the lines, he changes it every time. It's an intense day. He takes it very seriously, but that's not to say it's not fun. In fact, part of our taking it seriously is messing around between takes, because I feel like it's us staying in character and being silly. The magazine is handed out every Thursday in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, West Yorkshire, Dundee and Aberdeen. It is available from distributors at around 100 main line and Underground stations and bus terminals. [Wikipedia] | ||

| Posted: 15 Dec 2010 07:00 AM PST Years ago there was no kissing on Doctor Who, then along came the regenerated series and bang! Everyone is locking lips, left, right, centre, up, down, you name it; it's been kissed. And with Mistletoe hung everywhere, it's little surprise that A Christmas Carol – this year's Christmas Special – contains a little snog or two. That however doesn't make the onscreen lip action any less daunting for the kissing couple. So much so that Katherine Jenkins has told The Sun's Bang Showbiz that her kiss with co-star with perennial whats his face Danny Horn was the most nerve-wracking experience in her life – and she's sung for the Pope!
Well, her mom and millions of turkey-stuffed fans of the stunning mezzo-soprano. To prolong the agony, co-star Matt Smith purposely ruined take after take in order for her and Horn to do it again and again.
Despite her misery her woes were enlivened somewhat by her friends and boyfriend, former Blue Peter presenter and twinkled toed Gethin Jones reactions to her on screen tongue wrestling:

| Posted: 15 Dec 2010 06:29 AM PST Picture the scene: it's Christmas Eve, you're throwing a suitably geeky Christmas bash to see in Jesus' birthday, you've got KLF playing, everyone's enjoying some Jelly Babies and, despite the thickness of everyone's geek glasses, people are cutting loose and having a good time. When, to your horror, you notice that the ice is running low! No! What to do? Now drinks will only be available, at best, at room temperature! The night's a disaster… It's times like these that you a receptacle for all your ice based needs- preferably one that reflects your carefully crafted aura of all consuming geekdom. Well rest assured my partying friends A cool TARDIS Ice Box could be just what you need. Available from Neatorama for $24.95 (about £16) the TARDIS may not hold an ice age inside (which gives me an idea… © Andrew Reynolds) but is large enough to store enough ice to keep your drinks refreshingly cold and to make you look cool (did i just type that?) | Posted: 15 Dec 2010 01:59 AM PST If you missed the tweet on the official Torchwood: The New World Twitter account, two Torchwood audios are now available for pre-order – Ghost Train and Department X. Ghost Train is a most intriguing title indeed; the BBC's preview description is especially profound:
Unbelievable! Who knew?! If you're a fan of ghosts, trains, and/or Torchwood, you'll want to pre-order on Amazon right now! If that wasn't enough info to make you sonic some money out of an ATM, the summary of mysteriously-named Department X goes even deeper:
Know what this means? The adventure's exclusive, the Torchwood gang is there, and Mr. Jones is not dead yet! Take that all you Ianto-is-still-alive shouters – you still get your Ianto, but because audio CDs are a form of one-way communication, you won't be able to warn him and thus prevent his terrible fate! Ha! Follow the link ahead for the Amazon page for Department X. Note that a pre-order of Ghost Train or Department X is not particularly recommended for Christmas shoppers – as Amazon points out, the item will arrive on your doorstep sometime after December 25th. The original tweet we mentioned at the beginning of the article specifies "sometime" to be next March. The release is so far away that cover art isn't even available yet; feel free to order now so you'll never have to think about it again, but just know that you'll be waiting a few months. | ||

| Posted: 14 Dec 2010 11:30 PM PST According to a recent study performed by the search-engine-and-Chrome-loving company in question, Doctor Who is among the the UK's most Googled television shows for 2010! The 47-year-old programme that should be number one on the list came in fourth for TV-related UK searches this year, behind EastEnders, The X Factor, and everyone's favourite children's show about older siblings, Big Brother. Just as an experiment, we headed over to the Google home page and began to enter each letter in 'Doctor Who' to see how many letters it would take before it could guess what we were talking about. As you can see in this screenshot, we only had to type 'doc' before Google knew to place a 'tor who' alongside. Then we remembered that this test was being conducted on this article's writer's base camp of North America, where Who sadly still has a mere (albeit growing) cult following, so we tried again at Google.co.uk and got a very similar result, with 'doctor who' appearing when only three letters were punched in. It's apparent to us that Doctor Who is a common search on either side of the pond, and perhaps next year it'll be even more popular than Big Brother (it'd better be)! Other top UK searches that had nothing to do with Doctor Who and little to do with good television included Cheryl Cole at number one for music-related individuals or groups, Twilight: Eclipse sadly edging out the latest Harry Potter movie in the film category, and the World Cup and the Olympics serving as a sports duet in event searches. | The Twelve Blogs of Christmas: Three Posted: 14 Dec 2010 09:41 PM PST Ten Things for Christmas. Batman and Robin #18 and Soldier Zero #3 are both in US comic stores today. You can find a three page preview of the former here. Meet The Absence! I'm interviewed at Thought Bubble by the Sidekickcast here. And I should say how proud I am that Action Comics netted IGN's Best Series Revamp in their Best of 2010. I thought it only fitting in the Twelve Blogs this year to include our regular Ten Things feature. But first up, look who's back! It's Laurie Pink's Paul and Mike! So, to the Ten! 1: Our favourite electronica outfit Golau Glau have a festive offering out now, in the form of a free EP Myrrh & Myth. You can hear the haunting 'Oak Moon' here. That's one of my favourite seasonal flavours, dark and brooding, but somehow warm at the same time. 2: Emerald Isle is a fanzine featuring 2000AD characters like Sinister Dexter, Judge Joyce and Harlem Heroes in Ireland, put together by tons of Irish writer and artist talent. It costs £3 plus postage, and the print run is limited to 100. Go on, treat yourself! 3: I may have mentioned that I've got a story in the forthcoming Wild Cards anthology edited by George R.R. Martin, which is out next year. The very first volume in the series, Wild Cards I, has just been reissued, and is in all good book shops now, with added new stories from David Levine, Michael Cassutt and Carrie Vaughn. Wild Cards was the first 'real world superheroes' shared world, and this is very much the right place to get onboard. 4: Tomorrow Revisited by Alastair Crompton is a new book about Frank Hampson and the creation of Dan Dare, and it's accompanied by this exhibition of Hampson's art from the strip at the Chris Beetles Art Gallery in London, which runs until January 8th. I'm a huge fan of Hampson, and will definitely be going along. 5: My friend Christopher Jones gave Scott McDaniel an art assist on this issue of Batman and Robin, and offers us this, in an entirely different vein. You can find more of his art here. ![]() 6: There Goes the Day is a range of t-shirts, clothing, mugs, etc., designed by a friend of mine, with 'the discerning pop culture/action genre fan' in mind. Do take a look. 7: The lovely Piers Beckley is producing The Just So Stories at the King's Head Theatre in London, suitable for everyone over the age of five. It runs until January 3rd. Do tell him I said hello. 8: December Lights is an online short story project, with a range of authors putting up Christmas-themed fiction, for free. It all seems very charming and festive. They promise happy endings! 9: Talented UK comicker Neil Cameron is drawing A Santa a Day in a range of different styles, until Christmas. I particularly like the Kirbyesque one. And today's, I'm told, is going to be akin to Davros. 10: The Science Fiction and Fantasy Translation Awards are a new award scheme, designed to reward works of speculative fiction translated into English from foreign languages. They aim to raise enough money to present cash prizes to the first winners in two categories, long and short form, next year. You can read more about them here and about the items they've been given, which they intend to pass on to randomly selected donors as an incentive here. It's a very good cause to bung a few quid in the direction of, encouraging as it does the work of translators and of authors working in languages other than English. Tomorrow I'll be back with an essay, and hopefully some more interesting things to share. Ho ho ho and Cheerio! | ||
