The Sands of Time - Documentary

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 03:01 PM PST

As a special Christmas present to all of our visitors at Doctor Who Online, we recently filmed a short documentary in Utah; USA, looking at potential alien landscapes for Doctor Who, as well as some of the states landmarks and places of interest.

Inspired by the recent news that the Series Six two-part opener would have scenes filmed in Utah, DWO flew out to the state in October of this year to put together the third in our series of who-inspired documentaries, presented by DWO Site Editor, Sebastian J. Brook, provided free of charge via our YouTube Channel.

After a week in the editing studio, we are now thrilled to present to you, The Sands of Time:

Desert Conspiracies

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 05:57 AM PST

Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith has been chatting with the press lately, and while no there's really no new information to announce, he has discussed his experience filming in the desert areas of Utah in more detail:

"I think it's going to elevate the show and make it grand, epic and vast.  It's just brilliant to see Doctor Who in a foreign land. I know we see that every week, but there's no mistaking [those locations].  This ain't a set, these are the actual rocks of the Earth, and boy, does it look good for it!"

Matt does raise a good point – that location filming such as the American shoot for the upcoming Series 6 premiere or the trip to Dubai during production of the Tennant story Planet of the Dead adds a new layer of realism to the show.  We genuinely feel like the Doctor has journeyed to some faraway brilliant landscape, rather than bumbled into a video game to stop Bowser's oppressions on the citizens of Mario Land and save the Princess.

In addition to once again praising Moffat's mysterious new "better-than-the-Weeping-Angels" monster, the Doctor actor also teased that we're all going to have a lot of typing to do this spring when Who premieres:

"I think the forums will be awash with conspiracy theories.  [The fans] are going to have a lot to talk about."

Conspiracy theories, a new better monster, and a two-part opener… What's not to be excited about?  Doctor Who returns for its 32nd season this Spring, but not before A Christmas Carol airs Christmas day on BBC One at 6PM!

Also on the show is broadcaster, not to mention Doctor Who fan and author, Matthew Sweet (who wrote The Year of the Pig and The Magic Mousetrap for Big Finish's Doctor Who audio adventures).

The show will be broadcast on Wednesday 5th January 2010 at 4:00pm, and repeated the following Monday morning at 12:15am.

The Mazes of Time - Now Available!

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 02:45 AM PST

The new Doctor Who mobile game from Tag Games / BBC Games, The Mazes of Time, is now online.

The action / puzzle game can be downloaded from the Apple App Store for &ound;2.39 (iPhone) or &ound;2.99 (iPad), and allows you to play the roles of both The Doctor and Amy Pond.

DWO's Verdict

With so many games to choose from on the app store, many Doctor Who fans will quite rightly have a critical eye when it comes round to playing a game that's actually based on their favourite TV show. And with the BBC arriving in the app store a little late on the scene, you would think they might have missed the boat. Think again! Its clear with The Mazes of Time, that the BBC have been patiently waiting in the wings, plotting their move into the mobile gaming industry, and what a joy to behold it is!

From the crisp graphics, to the addict ive gameplay, right through to the storyline, everything knits together to round off one of the best games we have ever played on the iPhone.

This is a game that will appeal to both new series and classic series fans, as one particular level sees The Doctor and Amy travel to the Ice Tombs of Telos - one of the many highlights that are worth the games price alone.

Rating: 5/5

Shadows of the Vashta Nerada Images

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 02:14 AM PST

Boy oh boy, those good people at the BBC certainly know how to treat Doctor Who fans to a Christmas day extravaganza (if you live in the UK that is). Not only do we get the Doctor back in live action form in the Christmas Day special A Christmas Carol but the official Doctor Who website will also be releasing their fourth and final adventure game of the year, Shadows Of Vashta Nerada.

That's right, the shadowy (forgive the pun) meanies are back to cause the Doctor more trouble and this time, they're looking even creepier. Events follow on directly from the last game, TARDIS, and see the Doctor and Amy investigating a seabed colony called Poseidon where they suddenly find themselves in a struggle for survival against the Vashta Nerada.

The graphics for the game seem to be slightly crisper and Shadows Of Vashta Nerada looks like it will be the creepiest Doctor Who game yet!

As always, this free downloadable game will be available to Licence Fee payers in the UK only but as we understand, there are plans to make the games available at a cost to overseas gamers in the future.

In the meantime, here's looking forward to Christmas day in the UK, with lots of Doctor Who related goodies coming our way!

Doctor Who: The Adventure Games-Shadows Of Vashta Nerada will be available to download for free to Mac or PC on 25th December 2010.

Bill Pullman Cast in Torchwood!

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 11:15 PM PST

Hollywood star Bill Pullman has been cast in Torchwood: The New World!

Pullman – best known for his role as the US President in Independence Day (1996) and as Jack Wells in Lake Placid (1999), will play criminal Oswald Jones:

"…a highly intelligent murderer who gets out of prison on a technicality and becomes a media sensation. While it seems like he's repentant for his crime, he's also full of rage."

This isn't a cameo part either, but a recurring role. If this doesn't underline the ambition of BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide and Starz for the future success of Torchwood, then nothing will.

Great casting news!

Meanwhile, Torchwood: The New World has its Rex Matheson. American actor Mekhi Phifer has been cast as devil may care, tough as nails, dedicated CIA agent alongside regulars John Barrowman and Eve Myles for the American incarnation of the Scooby Gang, according to Deadline.

Phifer is best known for his role as Dr. Gregory Pratt in long-running medical drama ER as well as an acclaimed debut performance in Spike Lee's Clockers as Strike, a New Jersey drug dealer caught up in the murder of a night watch man.

Matheson is described in co-producing American network Starz Character Descriptions as (and its best to adopt a gravely trailer voice-over man voice for this):

He's 28, the golden boy.

Has been, all his life. Harvard education, fast-tracker in the C.I.A., destined for success. Though he's never taken it easy – Rex hustles, seduces and campaigns to get where he is today. He can talk his way into anything, then charm his way out, fast. He's made a lot of enemies, but his friends and lovers would defend him to death. His choice of career is significant. Someone like Rex could make a fortune in Wall Street, or Hollywood. But choosing the C.I.A. says a lot about him: that for all his swagger, he does believe in justice. And will fight for it.

Slowly but surely, we see him make friends. He's thrown together a bunch of people known as Torchwood, the only people who might have the answer to a global mystery. To Rex, at first, they're a bunch of freaks. Welsh women and World War 2 Captains, what's that about?! But as they race from one crisis to another, dodging assassins, blackmail, corruption and conspiracy, from Washington to Wales and the slums of Shanghai, Rex forges friendships in the heat of fire. He learns to trust his new colleagues. And they realize that this dangerous, dazzling, reckless man is the best friend they could ever have, in a world going to hell.

They frighten us, men like Rex. We wish we were him; we never will be.

He'll be joining Crash star Arlene Tur who has a recurring role as CIA Watch Analyst Vera Juarez.

Torchwood: The New World is a co-production between BBC Worldwide in the UK and Starz Network in the US and will air in the summer 2011.

Ten Teasers Teasing

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 10:14 PM PST

In what is promised as the first of many christmas treats leading up to the Christmas Day airing of A Christmas Carol (the Doctor Who one, not the Muppet's) Digital Spy have teased ten tinsel cover spoilers for the festive episode.

A Christmas Carol sees Amy (Karen Gillan)  and Rory (Arthur Darvill) trapped on board a stricken space liner that's plummeting through banks of thick icy fog to the surface of the planet below. A planet which has the power to clear the fog and save them, if only the Doctor can convince the miserly, heartbroken Kazran Sardick (Michael Gambon) that life is worth living- in his own time hopping, idiosyncratic way.

1. The Doctor finally tells a lie too big for the psychic paper.

2. "The other half is ****** the *****."

3. We learn exactly why bow-ties are cool.

4. Abigail breaks into song twice, but there's an interesting reason why.

5. The Doctor once spent a revealing evening with Frank Sinatra, Einstein and Father Christmas.

6. "Why are they singing?" "For ***** *****."

7. Turns out The Doctor is rubbish at card tricks.

8. "Marilyn, get your coat!"

9. Kazran gets a glimpse at his past, present and future – but not in the way you might expect.

10. "No chance. Completely impossible. Except at Christmas."

And if you ever needed a line to sum up what a Doctor Who Christmas Special is all about, number 10 does it beautifully.

The Twelve Blogs of Christmas: Four

Warehouse 13 and the Women of SyFy.

Well, our quiz of two days ago seems to have caused quite a stir. Everyone's having a go at it...

And that's just about the level of answers that I've seen in public. In private, however, I've been sent at least one correct answer to every question, but nobody's done hugely well and scored loads. So even if you only know a couple of answers, it's still worth sending in an entry. Asking around a bit or combining forces may prove worthwhile too.

I'm pleased to say that I'll be contributing to Voices from the Past, a forthcoming anthology of flash fiction, with all proceeds going to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital. Other authors involved include Alastair Reynolds, Paul Magrs and Jasper Fforde. It'll be in e-book format, at 59p for twenty stories, and will be out next April.

Today I'd like to talk about one of my favourite genre shows right now, Warehouse 13. (And let me just say SPOILERS!) It's The SyFy Channel's highest rated series, which is a bit of a shame in that I'm also a great fan ofStargate Universe, which isn't doing as well, and the fact that more happy go lucky fare is going great guns may pose problems for the grittier show. What unites these two series (and my other favourite, Fringe, Doctor Who, as I always say, looming too large for me to regard as a mere TV show) is an intelligence about avoiding cliche. W13 didn't start out like that, being, in its first season, a bit 'will this do?' like a lot of SyFy's own movies still are. The charming cast and odd sense of humour were present, but some episodes felt lacklusture, and the central bad guy was generically snarling and generically British. But at the start of season two something changed. The premise of W13 is that famous historical objects have the power to alter reality, that we're living in a world where reputation contributes to physics. And someone has to tidy up. The relationship of our heroes to authority is, of course, this being now, a touch incoherent: they work for the government and yet not exactly, rather for an ancient order of 'regents', who are sometimes scarily authoritarian, sometimes just getting the job done. The problem with any character 'going rogue' against this establishment is that, in order to keep the show going, they'd have to take the titular warehouse of artefacts with them. Still, I'm sure any future 'all the Watchers die' moment will be regarded as exciting rather than predictable.

However, that business of not knowing how it feels about authority is the only trope where the series falls into the traps of modern television. Consider the matter of 'will they/won't they?', a staple of, well, everything, forever. Will our male and female leads get together? No, says W13, they won't. The affable, enthusiastic Pete has a girlfriend in town who's a meaningful character, and the brittle, rather nervy Myka is utterly happy for him. This seems to also be a feature of Haven, the newest of SyFy's three 'weird precinct' shows. (When one of W13's characters went to visit the oldest show, Eureka, in a crossover episode, she was told outright that everything there works by science, and I'm hoping for similar with Haven, where everything works by slight horror, the three shows being the Towns of Clarke, Bradbury and dilute Stephen King). There, again, lead Audrey is only somewhat romantically interested in the town's roguish rogue who never breaks the law, and not at all in her, again girlfriended, partner. It feels like a memo went round. And it actually makes all these leads more relatable and less defined by others.

I think that Fringe doesn't get enough feminist kudos for its inversion of gender types, with it's tough female action hero and soft man who looks after family and test tubes. That goes vastly moreso for Warehouse 13. Of its seven leads this season, five were women. Two of them of colour (though one of those gets nothing to do). When Myka takes hip geek Claudia out in the field, to learn about the business of bagging and tagging dangerous artefacts, they talk about rites of passage, about screwing up, about their age difference, but not at all about men. That an episode that so heartily passes the Bechdel Test feels so weird and interesting because of it says that there's still a long way to go for modern society.

This Year's episodes saw a clever use of audience expectations to convince us that, while Pete was indeed hallucinating, he'd uncovered an entirely plausible secret villain, and a body swap episode that just did the fun bits (letting the actors show how good they are, the central motivation of Dollhouse), before realising this was ancient stuff and quickly moving on to something else. I laughed out loud several times (particularly at the quite sad moment where we see that Myka's greatest desire is to be enthusiastically thanked by her boss over some really good coffee) the banter and byplay looking like the product of directors who have time to work up things that play around the dialogue. I was pleased at the way that the gravity of the artefacts allows sudden seriousness in what's generally a bouncy (some would say steampunk, I wouldn't, for this is actually good, hee hee!) atmosphere. An artefact with dour consequences speaks of the tears of history, as when the show touched on Jewish extermination under Stalin. Our mentor hero, Artie, is literally a traitor to his country, for reasons that aren't (completely) whitewashed. His character speaks of the complexities of the past, saying that that wise bearded professor in sandals might have done drugs and bombs, and that now we (sort of, sometimes) forgive that. But the best walking grey area was H.G.Wells, the premise of whom (did for real most of the stuff in the novels, jolly British toodle pip) made me cringe, but who turned out (as the secret female author partner of a front man) to have such layers that when she tries to actually destroy the world, we're just a bit on her side.

It's not Kubrick. It's not trying to be. But it's not fluff either. It's thoughtful entertainment of the sort where Jack Kirby's belt can give one super powers. And it's radical, without ever saying so out loud. Hopefully, there'll be something in next season that might attract Hugo interest. Anyway, I love it.

Tomorrow: more Paul and Mike, more festive blather, more stuff! Cheerio!
