| Posted: 05 Jan 2011 09:54 AM PST Wednesdays edition of Radio Four's Thinking Allowed included a discussion on Doctor Who with US academic Marc Edward DiPaolo, who talked about his Journal of Popular Culture article "Political Satire and British-American Relations in Five Decades of Doctor Who."DiPaolo has analysed the political content of five decades of Doctor Who and concluded the Daleks are obsessed with racial purity and dedicated to a policy of genocide and represent the Nazis and the Jagrafess is a loathsome alien purveying useless information - which he has censored, rewritten and controlled and represents a modern day media mogul. He finds that the Time Lord is a liberal, bohemian, pacifist environmentalist, and definitely anti-American So is Doctor Who a closet radical? The programme is available worlwide on the BBC iPlayer for the next week. The discussion starts around 13 minutes into the show. | ||

| Posted: 05 Jan 2011 09:41 AM PST Rogers and Hammerstein, Laurel and Hardy, Bulk and Skull – these are the partnerships that last through the ages. But what happens when one decides to split the pair up, what irrevocable force could tear, say, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, apart? More to the point, which one is Simon and which is Garfunkel? Who'll carry on being held in a high regard by the public for new successes rather than old memories? Its a question that has dogged the Doctor since The Sun ran a piece suggesting that Amy Pond would meet her Waterloo half way through the new series- and now Matt Smith, in a recent interview with The Big Issue is facing the publics fear that having too much of a good thing really is too much. Smith, under the watchful eye of the BBC's Press Office Terror-hawk, so far has yet to dispel fans worries for Amy's life:
Adding to that sense of unease, Smith also spoke of how well he thinks Gillan will do after Doctor Who:
So, is Smith just being affectionate towards his partner in crime, or is this indeed the end of Miss Pond? Losing such a great companion would be a heavy blow to what was starting to look like a great pairing but, oh, that old teasing Moffat! He must be cackling with joy as he twists fans and journo's alike in his TARDIS shaped Mangle. The question might not be will she go but how could Moffat miss an opportunity not to make us believe she would, then invent something truely amazing to win us back? In Moffat We Trust… (via The Big Issue)

| Posted: 05 Jan 2011 04:12 AM PST How many times have you stared at the entrance to your bedroom and thought, "This should be a little more TARDISy"? As Kasterborites, most of us do that all the time, so naturally when we stumbled upon this product our reaction was akin to squealing piglets with deep male voices. A think tank of geniuses has thought up that thing you see in the picture – no, not the T-Rex skull, which is pretty cool as well, but the TARDIS. Except the TARDIS isn't just any TARDIS. It's a door. But it's not just any door. It's a TARDIS. The new $350 (about £226) 3D TARDIS door cover from Fantasy Factory can convert any old and unloved door in your house with the correct proportions into a time-and-space machine with which you can take an unlimited number of trips to that moon that's made of fake honey and is a bit carnivorous! If you're not in the mood for a TARDIS (although why wouldn't you be?), Fantasy Factory has a variety of door covers to choose from, including Star Wars and Star Trek options. All of these skins, according to their creators, are "easy to install" and "easy to change" which seems to translate to mean "easy to remove" in case Michael Grade shows up at your house planning to give you a million pounds. Although, even if he's that generous, it simply wouldn't be Whovian of you to not slam your new TARDIS door in his face. Fantasy Factory is offering a special discount for Kasterborous readers! If you mention this site when you place your order for a TARDIS, they'll take $100 (£65) off the price and sell it to you for a mere $250 (£161)! The shipping fee in the United States is $100. If you're in the UK, or anywhere else overseas, Fantasy Factory will need your address to estimate the shipping. Talk to Steve at the Fantasy Factory contact page for a shipping estimate. We'll be posting a full review of the TARDIS door cover shortly with details on which doors it's suited for and the installation process. Stay tuned! | ||

| Short Skirts, Florence and Who? Posted: 05 Jan 2011 02:22 AM PST Doctor Who star Matt Smith has already firmly ensconced himself in the "legend" category following his recent visit to a young cancer survivor over Christmas, but some of his other activities – such as recent comments concerning short skirts and Florence and the Machine – are certainly helping to keep the rascal in place. First off, Matt has defended Amy Pond actress Karen Gillan over the old Miniskirtgate fuss that was stoked by the Daily Mail in 2010 following The Eleventh Hour.
In our opinion, hiding Karen Gillan's legs would be a crime against humanity, so we're backing Matt on this. On the second point, however, we're not too sure. One of Matt's friends is Florence and the Machine star Florence Welch, and she would like to appear in Doctor Who apparently – something Mr Smith is quite happy with, as you might recall from a previous interview.
One can quite imagine! Interestingly some recent casting – barely recognisable drama regulars Elizabeth Berrington (Waterloo Yawn Road) and Adrian Schiller (Being Human, Ashes to Ashes) – seems far less inspired that casting Ms Welch, so maybe we'll go for it.

| Alex Kingston on The Late Late Show Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:45 PM PST We've gotta hand it to Craig Ferguson; this man never fails to stand up for what he believes in – making sure everyone in the United States sees and falls in love with Doctor Who. Recently, he confirmed via Twitter that Thursday night's episode of The Late Late Show will be yet another must-watch for Doctor Who fans; not only has CBS finally acquired the rights to broadcast the Doctor Who theme music, they've also secured River Song actress Alex Kingston for a guest appearance!
Getting hold of the rights to air the Doctor Who cold open has been a long time coming. After a rather frustrated Ferguson stood before his television audience in November with a much-scaled down intro to Doctor Who Night, he implied that the cold open might possibly leak onto the internet somehow. A couple weeks later, it did. And in mid-December, Ferguson made sure his Twitter army didn't forget it:
We're sure Kingston's presence on Thursday will be nice too. Maybe she'll finally tell us who River is! Yes, we know, fat chance. Thursday's Late Late Show technically airs on Friday at 12:30 AM for those on the Eastern seaboard, though still on Thursday for those in Central time, at 11:30 PM, on CBS.
| Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:07 PM PST Let no golden calf go untouched! Waking the Dead star Trevor Eve is back on the rampage, and again he has Doctor Who set firmly in his sights. The veteran actor who was promoting new ITV drama Kidnap and Ransom, slammed the BBC's spending on Doctor Who and enjoyable man-trash Top Gear – whose commercial success Eve believes has had a damaging effect on 'Intellectually Stimulating Programming' or, as I'm now calling it ISP, ahead of the Eve-led Television Revolution (which will be televised.) Trevor Eve – pictured here in romcom "intellectual" movie She's Out of My League in which he stars with his daughter Alice – told his feelings on Doctor Who to the Radio Times:
Far be it for us to criticise anyone who wishes to promote ISP but the one thing Eve doesn't do is promote intellectually stimulating drama – and it's difficult to see how he could. There may be the odd project that crosses his lap through his agent and his own production company Projector Pictures but are we to believe that Eve purely chooses his projects on the worthiness of their ideas? Is Eve's name big enough to help anyone who has written such a worthy script, get there foot in the door? Eve obviously has some clout, although it's difficult not to imagine the Mail passing up an opportunity to print an anti-BBC story from someone who has previous experience attacking the BBC's sacred cows. And what exactly are the BBC to do in Eve-niverse? There not likely to turn around and say: "Well, this long running kids programme is great and all, and its making us a comet sized amount of money but in the name of intellectually stimulating drama (like the stuff we have on BBC 2 and BBC Four every night) and equality- we're going to cut its budget so the people can finally see Trevor Eve and Shane Richie in Beckett's Ohio Impromptu." Doctor Who maybe a children's programme (abeit a Hugo Award winning one) but body bothering Walking the Dead was a detective crime series, and you can't press any random number on your remote without finding eight million of those clogging up your screen and denying you ISP. So, what do we make of Trevor Eve? Is he just being a grumpy old man or does he have a genuine point about the state of drama? Your thoughts please… (via Daily Mail)
| Action #900 Cover and Steel Reminder Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:06 PM PST I had a wander out to try and see the partial eclipse as the sun rose the other morning. The bowl in which our village is situated, with awkwardly tall buildings on the edges, meant that, in my dressing gown, I stumbled through the playground and all the way to the bus stop. 'Are you all right?' called the landlady from the pub. I assured her that I was eclipse watching, and not mad. Which is not the first time I've had to shout that. I caught a glimpse, but it was clear, from the bus stop, that the sun was rising into deep cloud, so I left it there rather than get arrested. Below is the lovely David Finch cover for Action Comics #900, which as you can see features the return of Superman to the title. You can read more about DC's exciting plans for the issue here. Steel #1, the one off special by my old friend (and Doctor Who novelist) Steve Lyons is in US comic stores today, and in the UK by the end of the week (because of the holidays), and, as well as being the first published US comics work by someone who's going to make a real impact in the medium, it, and the other one off specials featuring various Superman-related characters coming soon... well, if you're reading Action Comics, you might want to check them out, that's all I'm saying. I will be back with, I'm told, some more big comics news tomorrow. Cheerio! | ||

| Posted: 04 Jan 2011 05:48 PM PST While the Eleventh Doctor may be hot footed when it comes to football and the actor who plays him, Matt Smith, a former professional football player, former Tenth Doctor David Tennant has no such interest in the sport. Which makes his current choice of role even more interesting as he's playing Manchester United's former Assistant Manager Jimmy Murphy in the BBC film United - The Busby Babes, written by The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood writer Chris Chibnall. The story revolves around the "Busby Babes", the youngest ever football team to win the football league. Tragedy struck however, as the team flew home on a plane from an European Cup game against Red Star Belgrade. After refuelling at Munich, the team's plane skidded off the runway during an attempt to take off and half off the total 44 passengers were killed. This included United staff, players, crew and supporters and even some journalists as well. Tennant spoke about playing his upcoming role:
BBC film United - The Busby Babes will be broadcast during 2011. |
