Team Captain Jack: Assemble!

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 08:07 AM PST

Neighbours, hey.  Everybody needs good Neighbours – including Russell T. Davies who has signed up former Ramsey Street resident Dichen Lachman (Dollhouse, pictured right) to the denizens of Torchwood: The New World.

The stunning actress will be making a guest appearance in the premiere as a CIA Agent who's believed to be an agent in the CIA (okay, so there aren't a lot of facts about this role forthcoming yet.)

Also announced by Michael Ausiello from TVLine is the casting of Alexa Havins (All My Children) as Esther Katusi, a CIA Watch Analyst with 'an unshakable faith in humanity' and a monster crush on impossibly named colleague Rex Matheson, played by fellow Torchwood nubie Mekhi Phifer (ER)

As reported before, Greek actress Amber Stevens had been the front runner for the role of Esther until Russell T. Davies made the two fight to the death in his fabulously decorated Thunderdome.

The two newly minted 'Wood stars will also be joined by Bill Pullman (Independence Day) as convicted murderer Oswald Jones (another Davies character with the surname "Jones") a repellent, lustful beast who gets embroiled in a worldwide event, and Arlene Tur (Crash) who'll be playing Surgeon Vera Juarez.

Torchwood: The New World is a co-production between BBC Worldwide and the Starz Network and will air both here and in the states simultaneously this summer.

Time Travel Tracks

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 02:11 AM PST

You've watched him drive like mad, had numerous drunken conversations with your mates at the pub trying to guess who he is, and now you can hear him sing!  That's right; new from the BBC and audio company Speakal – an MP3 speaker in the shape of the Stig's helmet!

Oh, right… this is a Doctor Who site, not TopGearborous.  Well, we suppose we can keep shouting at you because the Beeb and Speakal have plans to unleash a TARDIS speaker to the public as well.  That's right!  The blue thing you see on the right hand side of the picture is not the wibbly-wobbly time travel device it looks like, but a handy tool to bring to a dance party!

This TARDIS is designed for iPhones, iPods, and iPads.  Unlike the Stig on the left, which, as the image depicts, connects directly to the player, the TARDIS manipulates vortex energy to forge a psychic connection with your device, eliminating the need for the two objects to touch.  The layman would call it Bluetooth, but we Whovians know the universe is much more complicated than that.

Speakal CEO David Solomon:

"Top Gear and Doctor Who have some of the most die hard fans of any program in the world.  We're proud to offer their fan base these unique and lifelike replicas of their favourite BBC icons."

You know what would be really unique and lifelike, Speakal?  Introduce a full TARDIS surround system!  The Doctor's Mark I Type 40 can be the subwoofer, assisted by the Master's TARDIS, the Rani's TARDIS, and the TARDIS from the roof of Craig Owens' flat as speakers placed in strategic areas around the room!

At the time of writing there is no word on the release date or price of Speakal's TARDIS speaker.  The Kasterborous brand TARDIS Surround System, if it were ever to exist, would be only £12.

(Note to self – write an article listing all the TARDIS-related merchandise you can think of before you lose track of it all!)

A Town Called Fortune

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 10:42 PM PST

Many, many years ago in Doctor Who, we were treated to a 1960's story called The Gunfighters. The first Doctor and his friends found themselves in the Wild West when the Doctor needed to cure his toothache (who else but the Doctor would end up there for that?) the story itself is not well regarded as one of the treasures of Doctor Who legend but has certain merits that give it a nostalgic feel.  With A Town called Fortune we relive the same experience.

Finding themselves on a train to the aforementioned town of Fortune, the Doctor and Evelyn quickly find trouble, the Doctor wanted for murder before he's even arrived. Jumping from the train, the Doctor promptly gets himself arrested and Evelyn must find help fast.

As a Companion Chronicle, this is told from the perspective of Evelyn and what a joy it is to have her back in the fold. For too long the Sixth Doctor has been spending time with Peri, Jamie and Zoe when, let's face it, the partnership of this arrogant and egotistical Doctor is always balanced well against the no nonsense view that Evelyn brings with her.

Sound design and direction are brilliant for this particular story, one can truly believe that they are lost in the old Wild West of yesteryear, with Saloons and bar fights described and bought to life in a varied and detailed way. Maggie Stables tells this well written story at a wonderful pace that takes you back to the days of Jackanory storytelling from the BBC. Like many of the Big Finish actors and actresses, she not only brings the variation of characters that she reads for to life, she also manages to capture Colin Baker's mannerisms excellently, dialogue between the two lead characters certainly flows well.

The musical score is reminiscent of The Two Doctors, which certainly helps the listener to envisage the dry sun kissed Wild West for a greater audio experience. This piece is certainly not the be all and end all for Big Finish's range, the lack of an alien menace certainly slows the story a little more than usual but sit back on a slow Sunday afternoon with a cup of tea and some crumpets and you'll find that you'll be drawn into a story that you'll find hard not to enjoy.

Written by Paul Sutton and directed by Lisa Bowerman, with Richard Cordery as Sam, A Town Called Fortune is available now from Big Finish – visit www.bigfinish.com for more information!

Restoration of the Doctor!

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 08:44 PM PST

The story as we all know it is a tragic one, in 1967 the BBC started deleting its extensive archive to make way for the storage of new show and TV serials. During this time, many episodes of Doctor Who were wiped away forever, never to be enjoyed again.

Serials such as Marco Polo, The Dalek's Masterplan, Fury from the Deep and The Evil of the Daleks would never be enjoyed again by viewers as they simply didn't exist.

Some of this "junking" extended to the Jon Pertwee era of Doctor Who but in that case, only certain colour episodes are missing. So for example The Mind of Evil, a 1971 Third Doctor adventure still exists in all its six episodes but only in black and white, not the full colour that they were originally transmitted in.

But technology now has a massive part to play in restoring older Doctor Who stories back to their former glory. Last year saw episode three of Planet of the Daleks restored from black and white to full, glorious colour thanks to a radical new technique by the Doctor Who Restoration Team, in which they effectively restore the episode to full colour using "hidden" colour keys that are in the black and white episode itself! Steve Roberts, supervisor of the team, explained:

"It seemed almost impossible… but when they made the black-and-white recordings, they didn't filter off the colour carrier, which for the last few decades has been nothing more than an annoyance."

Amazingly these colour carriers or "chroma dot" keys were holding the answer to restoring the episodes to full colour all along! The technique is now being used to fully restore The Ambassadors of Death, a 1970 Jon Pertwee story, for DVD release. The Mind of Evil has also had some work done and it won't be a surprise if they also tackle stories such as Terror of the Autons (which let's face it, looks bad) and episode one of Invasion of the Dinosaurs soon as well!

Isn't technology wonderful? Next they'll find a way to recover all the deleted 1960's episodes by plucking the old transmission signals from the air. Well, it's a thought…
