| Get Your Hands on Captain Jack's Bust! Posted: 15 Jan 2011 04:09 AM PST Hmm… no. The title doesn't have the same ring to it as the previous article with Amy, does it? Unless you're a lady, or you just like that sort of thing.
With this convenient 8-inch-tall sculpture of the top half of our immortal hero's body from Titan Merchandise displayed prominently in the entrance to your home, your honoured guests will be greeted by John Barrowman threatening to put a hole in their brains. This superbly-detailed polystone statuette captures everything you ever wanted in good ol' Jack Harkness – gun (revolver), guns (big manly arms), and a trademark overcoat to hide both the gun and the guns in. This baby's even got a supplier code of DWB-JBCJ-001, which probably stands for Doctor Who Bust – John Barrowman Captain Jack – Better Than 007. How is that relevant? It absolutely isn't, but at least now you know we're skilled at deciphering acronyms! The RRP of the Captain Jack Harkness maxi-bust is £59.99, but pre-order now and have it sent to you for just £49.99! If you want to do so, or if you just want a multi-angle gallery of this piece to get you in the mood for this summer's Torchwood: Miracle Day, head over to Forbidden Planet! | ||

| Posted: 15 Jan 2011 12:05 AM PST Norman Taylor, one of the men behind the original iconic Doctor Who title sequence, has died.Norman Taylor was a BBC Technical Operations Manager on Crew 9 based at Lime Grove in London. He was the man who, while experimenting with a camera looking at a monitor showing its own picture, made the serendipitous discovery of "visual howlaround" - the effect that was subsequently used for Doctor Who's original title sequence. I got the usual effect of diminishing images of the monitor disappearing into limbo, when suddenly some stray light hit the monitor screen and the whole picture went mobile with swirling patterns of black and white. Later I repeated the experiment but fed a black and white caption mixed with the camera output to the monitor, and very soon got the Dr Who effect. The original titles for Doctor Who are believed to have been recorded in August 1963 in an empty TC5 at Television Centre. Bernard Lodge, who was credited for the sequence, was in the gallery and Norman Taylor lighting matches to trigger the howl-round. Hugh Sheppard was on the camera at the time. Taylor was later given a Technical Suggestion award of £25.00 for his howl-round idea which featured in various forms in the title sequence until 1980, when it was replaced by the star-field effect. You can read more about his contribution to the series on the Tech-Ops History site. | ||

| Posted: 14 Jan 2011 08:54 PM PST The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine contains the news that the popular publication is to gain a North American spin-off title from April. Produced in the UK by Panini, as the original magazine is, Doctor Who Unlimited will apparently not be a versioned edition of DWM, but will be a separate publication in its own right, containing "100% new material". Unlimited will be edited by John Ainsworth, who has contributed various features to DWM in the past, and has recently been credited as the magazine's "Editorial Assistant". He explained to DWM that "Doctor Who Unlimited will have slightly more of a focus on the fictional side of Doctor Who and will also be giving regular coverage to the fans themselves." The first issue of the 44-page magazine will be available on newsstands in the US and Canada from the 7th of April. There is currently no information as to whether readers outside of North America will be able to order copies. | ||

| Posted: 14 Jan 2011 07:26 PM PST Here we go, kids! It will soon be a proven fact that the Doctor has a daughter! Or perhaps a son. Either way, he's going to be a father! Snaps of him in the Daily Mail show a clear baby bump protruding from his stomach as he casually walks down a busy London sidewalk in his scarf, Converse, and brainy specs with some blonde alongside him. According to a source, the man who once flew to the desert in Dubai on a bus is believed to be five months pregnant. We'll keep you updated on all of David's food cravings and nervous habits as he enters this decade as a daddy! Ah! Phone's vibrating, hold on a sec- Hullo? Hi Christian! Yes! Right, I know. Yes, I remembered to pick up the chicken broth. Yes, and the plutonium. We've just received word that we're reporting this completely backwards… apparently it's Tennant's fiancé who's with child, some girl named Georgia… ever heard of her? We think she was in an episode of that one show, Doctor Who was it? Yeah. She played the main character's daughter or something. Just a minute – is the Doctor about to have a daughter by his daughter?! That's a bit… well… ew. Time to be serious. Admittedly, the Mail has stooped to the point of using that undefined "source" for this report. It was probably the same source that the Sun used to dish the story. In fact, we bet the Mail first heard the story in the Sun, and then contacted the Sun's source to get some different quotes. Normally we wouldn't have you trust this report one bit. But, looking at this picture from the Mail, it's hard to deny the extra padding on Miss Moffett's belly. Perhaps she's simply been drinking too much beer these days? Assuming this whole story isn't a total media conspiracy, congratulations to them both! | ||
