Unlucky Seven?

Posted: 14 Jan 2011 05:08 AM PST

"Wot?" you say.  "These Kasterborous writers are nicking a headline off a Doctor Who Magazine from a few months back?!"

Yes, we are; funny you should notice.  And we think you'll find it fits perfectly with what we're about to tell you, which has nothing to do with Sylvester McCoy.

We'll start with this look at Steven Moffat, who's been tweeting and teasing (been using that a lot lately; maybe it should be called tweesing) again.

"7777.  Anyone figure out what I'm talking about?  [18 minutes later] Okay.  Episode 7 of the new series, is the 777th episode of Doctor Who.  There.  That passed 18 minutes, didn't it?  Oh, and we just started shooting it.  Before the internet melts, only counting proper transmitted episodes, not scenes, or sketches. Which I WOULD count if they got me to 777."

"Jeepers!" you cry.  "How is that even possible?  That's a lot more than 180 characters!"

Okay, so we cheated a little and rolled four tweets into one.  But more to the point, whoda thunk?  Episode 7 is also episode 777!  Don't tell us the Grand Moff isn't a genius!

But wait – isn't episode 7 of the next series the one that marks the series split?  Where there's supposed to be a huge cliffhanger unlike any we've seen before?  And that brings us to the title of this article, because all those sevens may just mean some dastardly scheme will meet our Doctor and his friends.  Will Amy, Rory, and/or the Doctor soon meet certain doom?

(Possible spoiler alert)

Probably not.  Because we already know that the trio will be in Mark Gatiss' already-filmed episode (presumably titled What Are Little Boys Made Of?), which was supposed to be Episode 4 and has now been moved to autumn.  Which means that whatever cliffhanger's about to be thrown at us will be one that we won't see coming!

Moffat's Swap Shop

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 08:40 PM PST

More news on the new series of Doctor Who for this year, Steven Moffat has made a decision to swap some episodes around to mix things up a little.

This year, as you may have heard, Doctor Who will be split in two. The first seven episodes will be shown in the spring where the show will end on a massive cliff-hanger. Doctor Who will then return in the Autumn to conclude events for a further six episodes.

As reported in Doctor Who Magazine, Moffat has made the decision to move an episode written by Mark Gatiss from the first half of the shows run to the second half. His reason being that the show need "more outside" in it's first half (I guess we're in for a lot of dank and dark corridors in the first half of the series!).

Replacing Gatiss' story will be a new episode penned by Steve Thompson. Whilst new to the world of writing for Doctor Who, Thompson has worked with Moffat previously on Sherlock, where he wrote episode two of the show entitled The Blind Banker (have you seen it? It's really rather good..). Thompson also won the Arts Council's Meyer-Whitworth Award for his play Damages in 2004 so the talent and the energy for writing a Doctor Who episode are definitely there!

So with this new swap around, Thompson's episode will now be story number three in 2011 series and Neil Gaiman's episode will now be the fourth.

Doctor Who Unlimited

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 07:56 PM PST

Over the years, Doctor Who has always been slightly less widespread in the USA then it has in the UK. Hardly surprising seeing as it used to take such a long time for new episodes to reach that part of the globe.

Weeks after they were transmitted and diagnosed to death on the internet, American fans were just getting round to seeing them. In the last few months however, due to the popularity of the show, the BBC have been recognising that American fans want the show as fast as possible and such have been screening new episodes faster and have even aligned the DVD releases for the US and the UK so that fans can get there hit of who all over the world on practically the same day.

Off the back of this, America will be receiving its very own version of Doctor Who Magazine called Doctor Who Unlimited!

The monthly release will be 44 pages long and will feature different content to that of our UK version. Not much is known about the publication at the moment, a release date has not been confirmed (you can bet it'll be this year though) and it's unknown whether it'll have a regular comic strip. The only thing that has been mentioned is that there will be more fan interaction but what that means is anyone's guess.

This news only goes to show the growing popularity of Doctor Who in the USA as it breeds the confidence to launch a standalone magazine. As ever, Kasterborous will keep you in the loop with any details.
