| 2011 Series Australia Transmission Date Posted: 26 Jan 2011 10:10 AM PST ABC in Australia have confirmed they plan to screen the 2011 series of Doctor Who shortly after the series is screened in the UK.The plan was confirmed by Brendan Dahill, Network Programmer for ABC1, in an interview with TV Tonight. I can't tell you the date yet because the BBC haven't told me what date they're transmitting yet but we're going close to UK TX again. Australians are great downloaders and they don't want to wait until Easter to see a Christmas episode, so if we can get it out straight away we will. The Christmas Special was shown in Australia on Boxing Day evening, less than 24 hours after it made its début on BBC One in the UK. BBC America has also indicated it will screen the 2011 series within hours of its UK broadcast. | ||

| Doctor Who loses out at NTA Awards Posted: 26 Jan 2011 08:56 AM PST Doctor Who lost out in the 2011 National Television Awards on Wednesday evening, failing to win an award for the first time since the return of the series in 2005.The series was beaten in the Best Drama Category by the BBC series Waterloo Road, the contemporary drama series set in a challenging comprehensive school. Matt Smith was nominated for Best Drama Performance, but the award went to veteran actor David Jason. It was a disappointing night for Doctor Who's showrunner, Steven Moffat, whose other show Sherlock was nominated but failed to win an award. Doctor Who did play a part in the proceedings when the show opened with a specially shot 3 minute sequence, staring Matt Smith as the Doctor, trying to get host Dermot O'Leary to the show on time. | ||

| Posted: 26 Jan 2011 07:52 AM PST For the first time since 2005, Doctor Who has failed to win a National Television Award. With the series up against Steven Moffat's Sherlock, Shameless and serial weepfest Waterloo Road in the Drama category, it seemed a done deal. But did YOU vote? Because, fellow Doctor Who fans, the series was beaten by serial weepfest Waterloo Road in a victory that matches that of David against Goliath. Later on in the evening, Matt Smith was beaten to the award for Drama Performance not by Philip Glenister (Ashes to Ashes, beaten four times by David Tennant) or by Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) but by David Jason (A Touch of Frost). Did YOU vote? Because, ladies and gentlemen, if you didn't, you are responsible for this loss. It is down to you that Doctor Who has lost face; and if you did vote, you clearly couldn't make you mind up between Steven Moffat's two shows and caused a split. Yes, it's YOUR fault. So, well done – you've rightly heralded the end of the "big" Russell T Davies era by making sure that Doctor Who isn't spread across Digital Spy and the celeb mags and brought it back down to earth, planted the shows feet firmly back on the ground and whispered in its ear "time to grow up". Because top quality shows don't need annual awards to make them worthy, or to validate them. Doctor Who, a show about an alien time traveller in a blue box who can go anywhere in time and space certainly doesn't. A show that illustrates concepts beyond the scope of soap opera, weepfests, detective drama, men in cars, talent shows and panel game shows (with perhaps the exception of QI) needs no awards. So, well done, it's all down to you: Doctor Who is the only real winner tonight. Meanwhile, Doctor Who did play a big part in proceedings with Matt Smith teaming up – in character – with MC Dermot O'Leary for a nice Whovian skit… | ||
| Doctor Who loses out at National Television Awards! Posted: 26 Jan 2011 07:35 AM PST Doctor Who failed to win the Best Drama & Best Drama Performance categories at this years National Television Awards. The Best Drama award, which the show has won for the past 5 consecutive years, instead went to Waterloo Road, in a shock twist that even the bookies couldn't predict. Even the Best Drama Performance category failed to snag the show an award for Matt Smith, who lost out to David Jason. Clearly this is a shock for fellow fans, especially as the show has ranked so highly at the awards in previous years. There was, however, solace in the form of a 3-minute Doctor Who sequence at the beginning of the show, which featured Matt Smith and Dermot O'Leary. A search on YouTube for 'NTA Doctor Who 2011' will bring up the video. Regardless of the outcome, it is DWO's opinion that Series Five was one of the finest for Doctor Who to date, with excellent writing, a fantastic cast, and a painstakingly hard working production team to boot. Chins up guys and gals - you were robbed! The nominations were voted for by the public and the winners announced live on television earlier this evening. [Source: National Television Awards] | ||

| Who: ‘The Gayest Non-Gay Show on TV' Posted: 26 Jan 2011 06:56 AM PST Certain eras of Doctor Who are as defined by the show as they are the events that surround it. Mary Whitehouse, gabbing to all and sundry about the perceived violence of the show during the 70′s which, inevitably, lead to higher ratings or Micheal Grade and his one-man hate campaign to rid the schedules of, what is now one of the BBC's biggest earners. A rogues gallery no doubt but recently one of the biggest events outside of the show to affect the perception of all things Who was the appointment of the very man who brought the show kicking and screaming into modernity- Russell T Davies. Davies was, is and shall gloriously remain, an openly gay man, and this, we all scoff with cynicism at our Neanderthal self's from back in the B.i period (before iPads), was a bit too much for tabloid journalists to take. 'A gay man running a children's show!' said one source who I just made up. But as time has proved and will continue to prove, the chip paper suppliers missed the point- the point that has been rounded up, study and collated into a smashing little article from the good people at Frost Magazine whose premise is not to question, but to love the glorious contradiction:
Sex and Doctor Who used to go together like biscuits and hammers but as pop culture was slowly circulated into the program, the odd jumpsuit there, a touch of miniskirt here, the show began to reflect the changing sexual attitudes of the world around it:
The odd bit of Peri leering later and we're back on the air and rightly, embracing variety as the spice of life – and none came more spicy than Captain Jack Harkness, who became the shows first bi-tri-anything with a pulse-sexual and from their the floodgates opened and reality came rushing in. The article points out that perhaps its a greater irony that now we are seemingly comfortable with a liberal attitude towards homosexual and bisexual relationships that certain factions (cough, Daily Mail, cough) have such a startlingly puritan attitude towards the heterosexual desire of Amy for the Doctor and her own comfortableness in her own sexuality. | Posted: 26 Jan 2011 05:02 AM PST As reported previously Karen Gillan is not only a red headed sexpot but also an ambassador for her craft. The Doctor's leggy companion recently became Eden Court's Arts Education Ambassador and now others are following her shining example (kind of an ambassador for 'Keeping it real', then.) Kati Kozikowska, arts education manager, for the Inverness theatre, said:
The theatre offers a host of course for creative arty types starting with a 'bunny beats' dance class for 3 year-olds, a creative writing class for all you budding Terrance Dicks and an Electronic Sound Production Course (a degree in Kraftwork?) But its not just the internet savvy, young go-getters that are signing up for courses, adults as well, have been scribbling down their John Hancock for jazz and choir classes. Numbers have been so high amongst adults that the theatre are looking to expand into further performance classes. For a full list of Gillan endorsed courses head over to the theatre's website (via The Inverness Courier)

| Doctor Who April Novels - Covers and Details Posted: 26 Jan 2011 03:11 AM PST BBC Books have sent DWO the covers and details for the April 2011 Doctor Who Novels: Dead of Winter Written by James Goss ‘The Dead are not alone. There is something in the mist and it talks to them.' In Dr Bloom’s clinic at a remote spot on the Italian coast, at the end of the 18th century, nothing is ever quite what it seems. Maria is a lonely little girl with no one to play with. She writes letters to her mother from the isolated resort where she is staying. She tells of the pale English aristocrats and the mysterious Russian nobles and their attentive servants. She tells of intrigue and secrets, and she tells of strange faceless figures that rise from the sea. She writes about the enigmatic Mrs Pond who arrives with her husband and her physician, and who will change everything. What she doesn’t tell her mother is the truth that everyone knows and no one says – that the only people who come here do so to die. Hunter’s Moon Written by Paul Finch ‘There's no end to the horror in this place - it's like Hell, and there are devils round every corner.’ Welcome to Leisure Platform 9 – a place where gamblers and villains rub shoulders with socialites and celebrities. Don’t cheat at the games tables, and be careful who you beat. The prize for winning the wrong game is to take part in another, as Rory is about to discover – and the next game could be the death of him. When Rory is kidnapped by the brutal crime lord Xorg Krauzzen, the Doctor and Amy must go undercover to infiltrate the deadly contest being played out in the ruins of Gorgoror. But how long before Krauzzen realises the Doctor isn’t a vicious mercenary and discovers what Amy is up to? It’s only a matter of time. And time is the one thing Rory and the other fugitives on Gorgoror don’t have. They are the hunted in a game that can only end in death, and time for everyone is running out... The Way Through the Woods Written by Una McCormack ‘The motorway bends around the woods. So did the old road. So did the Roman road. As long as people have lived here, they've gone out of their way to avoid the woods...’ England, today. Between the housing estate and the motorway lies an ancient wood. The motorway bends to avoid it. Last week, teenager Laura Brown went missing. Tonight, Vicky Caine will miss her bus and take a shortcut through the wood. And she will disappear too. England, 1917. Between the village and the main road lies an ancient wood. The old Roman road bends to avoid it. Tonight Emily Bostock and a man called Rory Williams will go to the woods. Investigating events in the present day and back in 1917, the Doctor and Amy are desperate to find out what’s happened to Rory. He was supposed to look after Emily – and now they’ve both vanished. Something is waiting in the woods. Something that’s been there for thousands of years. Something that is now waking up...

| Posted: 26 Jan 2011 02:14 AM PST Bad news for classic Doctor Who fans – problems are preventing the scheduled 2011 release of Season 7′s The Ambassadors of Death from being fulfilled… Starring Jon Pertwee as the Doctor, Caroline John as Liz Shaw and Nicholas Courtney as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, The Ambassadors of Death features some very interesting ideas about how aliens might get in contact with Earth, and is a clear influence on Torchwood: Children of Earth. With some episodes existing only in black and white until a restoration job for VHS release in 2002, The Ambassadors of Death was likely to be one of the top classic released this year, so this comes as quite a disappointment. Enhanced restoration for the DVD release using the chroma dot technique has been underway for some time. The news was released by 2entertain's classic Doctor Who Twitter feed earlier today.
That's all we get – but given the evident size of restoration of this 7 part adventure, I don't think anyone will bemoan the guys working on the project striving to get it right prior to its eventual release.

| Posted: 26 Jan 2011 12:53 AM PST 2|Entertain have announced that the DVD release of the Third Doctor story, The Ambassadors of Death, has been delayed due to ongoing restoration issues. It was hoped that the story would be out later this year and it was due to be released along with the 1977 story The Sun Makers. However the company confirmed via their twitter account that the story will not now be released this year. The story only existed in the BBC Archives in a mixture of formats. Although the original Transmission Master of Episode One exists, the rest of the story was only kept as 16mm black and white film. A second generation colour copy exists as an off air recording from WNED Channel 17 in Buffalo, and this was used to restore episodes five and six to colour for the 2002 Video release. However the quality of the colour recording was not good enough to allow for the restoration of the rest of the story. Earlier this year it was reported that the remaining episodes were being restored to colour using the same technique applied to Episode Three of the 1973 story Planet of the Daleks. However it appears this process has run into problems and the release date has been delayed to give the restoration team more time to work on the project. | ||

| Posted: 25 Jan 2011 11:07 PM PST It's that time of year again – the National Television Awards air on ITV 1 this evening, with Doctor Who, Matt Smith and Steven Moffat all up for a gong. As voting is now closed, your job now as a Doctor Who fan is to sit in front of the TV with your fingers crossed going "oooeeeeooooo" through every commercial break and chanting "Doctor", Last of the Time Lords-style – for every category that the series is nominated in (Drama and Drama Performance). If won't be easy, either – Sherlock is nominated in Drama with Benedict Cumberbatch also nominated for Drama Performance. Steven Moffat will have few complaints having that alternative, and neither will Beth Willis; Ashes to Ashes star Philip Glenister is nominated once again in the Drama Performance category. Tune into ITV1 at 7:30pm to check the fun (or take an awards-season holiday and ignore it. No one would blame you…) | ||

| Earthshock Cyberman Maxi Bust! Posted: 25 Jan 2011 09:27 PM PST From 1982′s Earthshock adventure starring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, this beautifully-sculpted 8″ maxi-bust of the classic 1980s Cyberman design captures one of the Doctor's most notorious arch-enemies in all his heartless semi-robotic glory. Standing at 8 inches, these superb busts are made by Titan Merchandise, just like the previously-seen busts of Amy Pond and the Eleventh Doctor. As you can see from the gallery of images below, this is a great bust that can stand proudly alongside others from the range. At 8 inches they're 2 inches higher than previously released busts of a Cybus Cyberman, Jabe from End of the World and a Slitheen. Available for £59.99, these excellent "Silver Giant" busts are available to be preordered for just £49.99 from Forbidden Planet, with dispatch taking place from July 30th, 2011. | ||

| Posted: 25 Jan 2011 06:31 PM PST A talking pig has re-opened the age old debate of whether or not Doctor Who is a children's programme. Peppa Pig, the 2-D pig and pawn of the Labour Party, has brought home the merchandising bacon to the tune of £200 million- taking over the obviously delayed-at-the-signals Thomas the Tank Engine. This news has led The Daily Telegraph to bundle together the longest running children's shows with Doctor Who sitting pretty at number 7- so how comfortable are you with your favourite show lining up against shows like The Sooty Show and Rainbow? The debate over whether or not Doctor Who is an actual children's programme rather than a drama programme aimed at children like others on the list, such as Grange Hill, recently came to ahead when Stephen Fry stoked nerd flames of hate by highlighting Doctor Who for being one of the reasons TV had sunk into 'Infantilism' One the one hand Fry acknowledged was that Doctor Who was a well written, children's programme but again the term 'children's programme' is misleading. The show has never been produced by the children's department at the BBC and throughout its run has introduced both the real world and a myriad of complex sci-fi ideas into tea time living rooms. Perhaps it's the fans' problem; maybe we take these labels and attach a perceived negative connotation based on our love of the show, both in adulthood and during our youth, and perhaps we shouldn't take these arguments so seriously – something that Mitchell and Webb star David Mitchell, poked fun at recently. So, where do you lie on this argument? Does it matter that it shares similar accolades with The Sooty Show? (via The Daily Telegraph) | ||
