Colin Baker in Doctors? Who?

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 08:00 AM PST

For all you fans of Colin Baker (aka the Sixth Doctor), there's good news – he'll be appearing on the BBC again reprising his as a university professor to appear in the popular BBC One daytime soap Doctors.

Colin recently updated his blog, where he revealed that filming is due to begin in mid January. The part he's undertaking is one that he also played in 2001 and 2006.

Baker's been a busy man recently as he also undertook the role of Inspector Morse in a theatre production.

Funnily, the article that reports this news states that after Colin's first series was cancelled it was partly due to a press campaign that season 23 was made. Whilst causing a media furore that can hardly be seen as what actually happened!

Doctors has been running on BBC One for ten years now and its ratings have dramatically increased in the last few years, so Colin should get a fair bit of attention from this role!

This February, Doctors will air its (very impressive) two thousandth episode and since Colin is filming a reprised role, it's a good bet that that is the one he'll be guest starring in. But we'll have to wait and see…

Soapy Spoilers (Sorta…)

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 07:27 AM PST

Editor's note: Okay people – here's one of those articles that you might not want to read. Containing potential spoilers or absolute bobbins depending on what you want to believe, let's just say that the contents have been hidden for safety but the whole thing might just be a rehash of last year's Amy's Choice rumours…

Rumours have recently been unleashed regarding one known as Amy Pond… and let's just say that if they're true then Karen Gillan may be getting her baby bump back on during filming of future episodes.

I'll write "if they're true" one more time in bold letters: If they're true.

Know what this means?  You guessed it!  Our archnemesis, the Unified Intelligence Tabloid, is back!  This time, however, the story's coming not from the Sun, but from the Daily Star.

To sum up what they're reporting, Amy will fall pregnant and be thrilled about it.   She'll tell Rory the good news and he'll be not-so-pleased, and question whether or not he's the father as he eyes the Doctor suspiciously.  Naturally the Doctor will vocally reject the notion that he's Dad, but it won't be enough to convince Rory and it will be enough to trigger a dramatic story arc that sounds a lot like an episode of EastEnders.

It doesn't stop there – the report claims other potential fathers will be thrown in the mix as well.  Remember Vincent Van Gogh?  His name will surface, but he's nuthin'.  How about a Dalek?  Or even a Cyberman?  I'm not relying on sarcasm for once… this is what the Daily Star is actually reporting!

Could the Cyber-head from The Pandorica Opens have "assimilated" Amy after all?

If this soap-screaming storyline is actually in development, it could be an explanation for a recent TARDIS sighting that has been dismissed as being something to do with National Television Award presenter Dermot O'Leary.  Perhaps he's just the cover story.  Perhaps there's something more.

But probably not.  Considering that the source of this "Amy pregnant" rumour is a media organization designed to write absolutely anything regardless of truth for the sake of acquiring readers, I'm willing to bet money that at least 80 percent of this story is false.  It actually wouldn't be surprising to see Amy pregnant, but a dramatic plot about the identity of the father?  This is Doctor Who.  A family show focused on travelling to the past, the future, and the stars.  Not on potentially-cheating wives.

However, if the tabloids actually got something right for once, then Doctor Who Magazine is correct as well – our favourite show is in fact a long-lived soap opera.

Upcoming Action

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 12:36 AM PST

Just popping in for a moment at the start of another packed work week. First off, the winner of our Christmas Quiz, Dean Brown, has received his comps box of DC comics, all the way down there in New Zealand. That's Jessie helping Dean make a start by reading an issue of Scooby Doo.

Dean tells me that most of his own collection has been boxed up safely lately due to being scattered by the earthquakes last September. So now he's got something to read. Well done, Dean, and thanks for having a go.

We popped along to Tony and Tracy Lee's wedding on Saturday. Great to see UK comickers like Emma Vieceli and Budgie Barnett, to hear Geek Syndicate's David Monteith's wife Siobhan sing a couple of arias during the signing of the register, and to discover that the nuptials attracted messages of congratulation from Noel Clarke, Dan DiDio and Neil Gaiman, amongst others. Neil sent... well, it was basically a short story, and you can read it here. Throw in a wonderful female vicar and the assembled masses hollering out 'Jerusalem', and all in all it was one of the best weddings I've been to.

Action Comics #897 is out on Wednesday. It's got one of DC's icon covers, a lovely David Finch portrait of Lex, and inside is a story I'm really proud of, Lex's encounter with the Joker. You can see a page from it here. Their encounter pulls together a number of threads of back story, ready for the run up to our big finale. Let's just say there's a pony in here. A magic pony. Who sings.

DC have been revealing a lot of information about the forthcoming issue #900 of Action, as you can see here. Apart from the fifty page lead story by me and Pete Woods, there'll also be contributions from Richard Donner, David Goyer and Damon Lindelof. There'll be covers by David Finch and Adam Hughes. And the whole thing will be a whopping 96 pages long.

Anyhow, back to the grindstone I go, and I shall you soon. Cheerio!

Official Doctor Who Site to Close?

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 10:17 PM PST

Following news from the BBC today that the BBC Online budget of £137m is to be cut by a huge 25%, there are concerns that the cuts might have a marked effect on the Official Doctor Who pages.

Several key changes to the superb online service have been announced, notably the replacement of the majority of programme websites with automated content, and fewer news blogs – a direction in which the Official Doctor Who site has been heading recently.

Meanwhile it has been confirmed that BBC Online will not offer specialist news content for specialist audiences – a description which could well apply to Doctor Who fans.

Speaking about the program of cuts – the announcement of which follows the departure of Future Media and Technology chief Erik Huggers -  BBC director general Mark Thompson said:

"BBC Online is a huge success, but our vast portfolio of websites means we sometimes fall short of expectation.

"A refocusing on our editorial priorities, a commitment to the highest quality standards, and a more streamlined and collegiate way of working will help us transform BBC Online for the future."

Interestingly, the iPlayer will also be reshaped, bringing together programming and programming information with archive content. This would seem to be the ideal home for the Doctor Who pages if a decision has been made to close them in their current form.

Exactly what happens to the Doctor Who pages are currently speculation – the Doctor Who site has survived cuts before, notably to the old BBC Cult section which was originally pretty big and features sections for Red Dwarf and Blake's 7.

Karen Gillan Gallery

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 10:00 PM PST

Stuck at work on a miserable Monday morning in January? Perhaps some new photos of the lovely Karen Gillan are in order to drag you from your introspection!

Thanks to the BBC we've got a nice selection of images of the Amy Pond actress, whose wedding to Rory Williams has so far shown no sign of persuading the Doctor to call her "Williams" as opposed to "Pond".

It's nice to see a selection of images that are just of Karen without the Amy Pond baggage – she's done plenty of photoshoots in her time both before and since Doctor Who and I think you will all agree that Ms Gillan is on very good terms with the camera.
