| Posted: 10 Feb 2011 07:15 AM PST Recently, we saw the Eleventh Doctor deal with a particularly troublesome problem in A Christmas Carol. The adventure (the Doctor Who Christmas special for BBC One) was bold, brave, exciting and even managed to have the Doctor and his friends menaced by a large flying shark. But whilst that adventure contained a lavish screen realisation to entertain all of those huddled around their television sets on Christmas day, Big Finish decided that their own Doctor Who Christmas special would be a visual treat for the ears. Relative Dimensions finds the Eighth Doctor and Lucie Miller preparing to receive some very special guests aboard the good ship TARDIS in the shape of the Doctor's granddaughter Susan and her son Alex. The plan is a very straight forward one; Susan and Alex are to have Christmas dinner aboard the TARDIS with the Doctor and Lucie. But this is the Doctor's world so is it ever that simple? Unfortunately not, as the Doctor and his guests are soon up to their eyeballs in transdimensional problems. It turns out that a fish that Susan appropriated many years ago during her travels with the Doctor has been lying dormant within her old room and now it's escaped and wanting to feed… Marc Platt's play is simply brilliant. There's no other way to describe it. Here we have a Doctor at possibly his most vulnerable and emotional as he tries to reconnect with the family that he barely sees. The Doctor's rule has always been a simple one, never look back. What's done is done and when it's time to move on, do just that. But since revisiting Susan back in An Earthly Child, it seems that the eighth Doctor has become rather sentimental. This is a rare treat for us as McGann's performance is tenderly touching in this play. He clearly longs for Susan, Alex and Lucie to join him on his adventures but struggles to find the right words to say. The Eighth Doctor was always noted as wearing his heart on his sleeve and being a vulnerable incarnation but for all those descriptions of his character, we never saw him bleed (so to speak) in any medium. He always kept quiet when he was at his lowest point. Here, we have a Doctor that is willing to push his poker face to one side and try to embrace emotions that he's not used to displaying. While the story unfolds, we're shown more of the Eighth Doctor's TARDIS than ever before. Certainly more than the TV movie and possibly more detail than 2003's Zagreus went into. Basements we never knew existed (although it wasn't a stretch to imagine they were there) are brought to life by audio brilliance. Old rooms of former companions are thrown back and forth as the Doctor shows how much emotional baggage he really carries. The big fish that's chasing the TARDIS dwellers down is only a means to an end. The most important thing within this story is the four lead actors, who take us on an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. By the end of this play, you really feel like you've been locked up in the TARDIS with them, going through all their experiences. Lavish, tender, stylish, exciting, sad, funny and bittersweet, this really is a Christmas special that stands out as a real treat and that's comparing it to its television counterparts as well. If you want a Doctor Who story that will tick all the boxes for you, this is it. Buy it now, sit back and relax and spend an hour in the TARIDS with a unique look at the Doctor's softer side, you won't be disappointed. Relative Dimensions is available on CD and MP3 now from www.bigfinish.com. | ||

| Lost Stories - Series Three Moves Forward! Posted: 09 Feb 2011 11:32 PM PST Series three of The Lost Stories has moved forward in the schedule, with a trio of Fifth Doctor tales now planned for released in October, November and December 2011. The series will then break for four months, and return in May 2012 with the remaining five stories being released monthly. The first title to be announced is The Children of Seth by Christopher Bailey, writer of the acclaimed Kinda and Snakedance. In The Children of Seth the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Nyssa arrive on a world that is at war with its evil enemy Seth, but anyone who questions the status quo is dispatched summarily to 'Hell'… "This is the Holy Grail of Lost Stories," says producer David Richardson. "I first heard about the script from Rob Shearman, who'd worked with Christopher Bailey on the Mara Tales DVD. I contacted Christopher, and he was delighted to hand over the existing script material and storyline. So one day last summer adapter Marc Platt, script editor John Dorney and me piled into a car and met with Christopher in Brighton, working through the story over a long lunch." The Children of Seth was recorded mid-January, and director Ken Bentley assembled a world class cast. Guest stars include Honor Blackman (The Avengers, Doctor Who: Terror of the Vervoids) plays Anahita, David Warner (Titanic, Doctor Who: Dreamland) is Siris, Vernon Dobtcheff (The Spy Who Loved Me , Doctor Who: The War Games) plays Shamur and Adrian Lukis (Pride and Prejudice) is Byzan. "We knew we had to get the very best for this one," says David, "because it's such a wonderful script. And it was beautiful to listen to in studio – I think we have discovered something very special indeed…" The Children of Seth will be released in December 2012. More titles from The Lost Stories – Series Three will be announced next month. | ||

| New Who Shop at The Doctor Who Experience Posted: 09 Feb 2011 09:10 PM PST BBC Worldwide is to launch its first ever shop devoted to Doctor Who at the much anticipated Doctor Who Experience. The shop will be a treasure trove for fans showcasing Doctor Who toys, games, books and licensed merchandise. Designed, staffed and managed by brand experience and retail specialists Brandnew Corporation, it is the first time BBC Worldwide has created a stand-alone retail operation dedicated to a single television brand. The shop will open on 20th February in tandem with the Doctor Who Experience and remain open throughout its run. The Doctor Who Experience will be further supported by a Wi-Fi service exclusive to Olympia. Also provided by Brandnew, the ‘closed loop’ mobile Wi Fi platform is dual purpose – while receiving redeemable coupons for use in the Doctor Who shop, visitors can also use smartphones to enjoy an immersive browsing experience related to the aliens, monsters and storylines at the show. It is the first time an event at Olympia has used Wi Fi to enable mobile content to be distributed this way. The Wi Fi service has an easy login interface and one click access to content. From a special offers area, users download promotional barcodes which are then swiped at the checkout reader in the usual way, with price reductions shown at the till and on receipts. The wireless service is security encrypted and much faster than any 3G network. Much of the material for download is exclusive to the Dr Who Experience with a wealth of facts, figures and information. A special subtitling service can be accessed for the deaf, ensuring the Experience – led by the Doctor’s own vocal commands – is just as meaningful. The shop will retail over 400 Doctor Who SKU’s at any one time, with many items exclusive to Olympia – a showcase of licensed product larger than anything available on the high street in one place. The Doctor Who shop is a stand-alone outlet adjacent to the café, though most visitors will enter after enjoying the Experience and Exhibition. The 133 square metres has a circular layout to encourage easy and full navigation of the merchandise. The tills and checkout area at the centre mimic the central console of the TARDIS. The brief from BBC Worldwide was to create a retail extension of the Dr Who brand experience. The Doctor Who Experience promises to be a spectacular event, featuring an exhilarating walk-through adventure, where visitors can step into a full recreation of the Eleventh Doctor’s TARDIS, and an ‘out of this world’ exhibition featuring iconic Doctor Who props and costumes from its 47 year history. This is the first ever fully immersive Doctor Who attraction - an unprecedented opportunity for fans to step through a crack in time and take part in their own Doctor Who adventure in the role of the Doctor’s companion. Their challenge will be to reunite the Doctor with the TARDIS whilst facing some of the best-loved and most-feared monsters from the hit series, including a Dalek spaceship and Weeping Angels. Brandnew Corporation is responsible for the full retail offer at the Dr Who Experience; designing the interior and layout, determining the fixtures and displays, setting up the till and EPOS systems, product ranging and merchandising. The company is also tasked with the live customer experience; recruiting, training and briefing staff for the interactive show, exhibition and shop, plus stewarding at the event itself. Alex Johns, MD at Brandnew Corporation said “After the exhilaration of the Doctor Who Experience the area of the shop and café provide an opportunity for fans to catch their breath. Inspired by what they’ll have seen and experienced, our retail offer makes it both easy and pleasurable to turn their excitement into tangible rewards”. He continued “The Wi Fi platform will considerably enhance the immersive experience for all Doctor Who lovers while maximising footfall and sales in the shop. It is an important part of our ‘from the till backwards’ approach to retail planning” Ian Wickham, Head of Retail Development, Licensed Consumer Products UK/EMEA said “We’re delighted to be working with Brandnew on this exciting project. Some of the innovative plans we have, in particular with regards to new technology being applied at the Experience, are state of the art. This technological aspect of Brandnew’s capability made them a perfect fit for the Doctor Who Experience.” Doctor Who Online have access to a large version of the shop interior image, which you can view to the right.
