David Walliams Confirmed

Posted: 20 Feb 2011 05:41 AM PST

Details of comedy actor David Walliams' upcoming role have been released by the official BBC Doctor Who website.

He's be playing "Gibbis" who according to some sources will resemble Mole from Wind in the Willows, although whether this resemblance is purely physical, purely character or both is something we will have to wait and see…

David Walliams is of course best known for his comedy creations with Matt Lucas in Little Britain (which prominently featured former Doctor Who legend Tom Baker and School Reunion and Infinite Quest's Anthony Head) and more recently Come Fly With Me, not to mention the oft-ignored Rock Profiles.

Speaking to the BBC, Walliams said,

'I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and am so looking forward to working with Matt Smith and running up and down some corridors with him.'

The as yet untitled episode is written by Being Human creator Toby Whithouse who previously wrote 2006′s School Reunion and 2010′s Vampires of Venice.

Docteur Who: ratings update

Posted: 20 Feb 2011 05:07 AM PST

Series Five of Doctor Who continued on France 4 on Saturday, featuring Le labyrinthe des Anges (1+2) and Les Vampires de Venise. The shows achieved 375,000 viewers, 2% of the total viewing audience at that time (8:35pm onwards). Whilst this is a drop in the total viewers from last week (453,000), the audience share has remained the same.

The evening also saw a repeat of Torchwood: Les Enfants de la Terre on NRJ 12 in the same time slot - the five episodes achieved a rating of 219,000 viewers (1%).

Audience figures for Saturday can be viewed at Premiere, which shows that Danse avec les stars on TF1 was once again the highest show on French television that day.

The first three episodes of Series Five - Le Prisonnier Zéro, La bêtes des bas-fonds and La victoire des Daleks - are repeated on Tuesday evening, from 10:00pm (local time).

Tate Changes Direction?

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 11:43 PM PST

Could former Doctor Who co-star Catherine Tate be about to quit acting for a move into the director's chair? Following a attempt at overseeing the action and pulling it all together rather than being the focus, the Donna Noble actress has spoken about an upcoming project as well as an imbalance of casting opportunities in comedy.

It's quite clear why Tate might be thinking about stepping behind the cameras – she enjoys it and the process allows her more control.

"I directed for the first time at Christmas, a short film for TV. I would like to do more. I have got a project but I don't know what's happening with that."

Her recent appearance in the Jack Black movie Gulliver's Travels seems to have been more frustrating than expected for the actress and writer, who found that

"…there's a lot of stopping and starting and for someone like me not to have anything to do with the creative processes was difficult because I'm bossy."

Meanwhile hard-working Catherine – a graduate of the Central School of Speech and Drama in London – finds that there are problems for talented newcomers in comedy who weren't fortunate enough to go to Cambridge.

"There are good actors who have trained and good actors who haven't trained, bad actors that haven't trained and bad actors that have trained. Most of the jobs go to people from Cambridge – in comedy anyway."

Catherine can soon be seen in Much Ado About Nothing with her former Doctor Who star David Tennant.

Hardwick, Ferguson, and Gallifrey

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 07:23 PM PST

Chris Hardwick of Nerdist Podcast fame is experiencing a more-extreme-than-usual form of Doctor Who fever.  If you're reading this from the Gallifrey One convention taking place in Los Angeles this weekend, you may have already seen him wandering around the LAX Marriott Hotel with a camera dressed up as the Tenth Doctor (Chris is, not the camera. Though a camera in a Doctor costume would be a remarkable sight).

The reason?  He's shooting a segment for CBS's The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, interviewing stateside Doctor Who mega-fans a bit like himself, possibly to find out what in their right minds could make them turn away from modern American masterpieces like Vampire Diaries, Glee, and Jersey Shore and watch a dull, same-thing-every-week cringe-inducer like Who.  What?  You like Doctor Who as well?  Then we have no idea what could possibly bring you to a totally British-sci-fi-loathing website like Kasterborous.

Hardwick mentioned this upcoming convention appearance when he trotted in after the hindquarters of Ferguson's trusty dancing horse Secretariat (yes, just like he did on Matt Smith day) on the Late Late Show.  But why are we telling you this when you can just see for yourself?  He doesn't really start talking about Doctor Who until 5:11, shortly after which Ferguson gets his Doctor-numbering wrong.  Feel free to send him an email.

We'll be keeping an eye on the Late Late Show over the next week and we'll see if we can't post a clip from the Chris Hardwick trip there after its broadcast.  For more information about this year's Gallifrey One, read our previous article, though as it's scheduled to conclude on February 20th, we daresay it's almost over by now.
