Pre-Order Everyone's Just So So Special

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 10:05 AM PST

When he released his last collection of short stories, Robert Shearman did a very silly thing. He decided that fifty of the leatherbound editions would each have a new story, individually handwritten and sealed in envelopes. He hurt his wrist writing that out. He moaned a lot.

He said he'd never do anything like that again.

But this year, he's being sillier.

Everyone's Just So So Special is his third collection of stories, and its theme is history. Twenty-one short stories of the comical and the absurd, the touching and the horrific, all glancing off the way we perceive time and memory. But for the leatherbound edition, he's proposing to write another hundred short stories. And all uniquely tailored to the people who pre-order the book.

The hundred stories will each take the form of an encyclopaedia entry about a person forgotten to history, someone who nearly became famous, but never quite did. And the stories will be inspired by the names of the hundred customers who pre-order this edition. "If Nicholas Briggs ordered a copy, then Nicholas Briggs would find within the book a story about a fictitious ancestor of his who shares his name. Utterly exclusive, and individually handwritten by the author."

After release of the regular hardback, the one hundred stories will be presented online, so that everyone can see the results of the project, and that each of the entries are completely original.

Everyone's Just So So Special will be released in July, on the back of Tiny Deaths (winner of the World Fantasy Award) and Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical (winner of the Shirley Jackson Award, the Edge Hill Readers Prize, and the British Fantasy Award). These special leatherbound copies - strictly limited to one hundred - will retail at £40, and can be pre-ordered now.

Asked what story he'd write about a Nicholas Briggs, Shearman gave the matter some considerable thought, and said, "Sounds as if he probably came from peasant stock to me."

Doctor Who: production roundup

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 09:18 AM PST

Back at the beginning of the month, David Walliams revealed that he would be appearing in an episode of the next series of Doctor Who; more details have now been released regarding his role by the BBC and other media outlets:
It's been confirmed that David Walliams will appear in the new series. He'll feature in a spooky episode playing a character called Gibbis.

Walliams said, "I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and am so looking forward to working with Matt Smith and running up and down some corridors with him."

His episode has been written by Toby Whithouse, whose previous contributions include The Vampires of Venice and School Reunion.

Further casting details for episodes have been revealed through agencies over the course of February.

Spotlight lists a number of guest stars under the direction of Peter Hoar. Actress Frances Barber plays a character named Kovarian; recent roles include Elizabeth in the BBC Christmas Tale Nativity, and Janice in ITV's The Fattest Man in Britain. Christina Chong plays Lorna Bucket - she will feature as an Interpreter in the forthcoming film sequel, Johnny English Reborn. Meanwhile, Joshua Hayes takes on his first television role as a character named Lucas.

Actor Geoffrey Burton has been listed as "Nasa Man" - though no director has been listed, this credit would seem to tie in with the American-themed opening two-parter for the series written by Steven Moffat and directed by Toby Haynes. Burton is better known for stage roles, but has appeared in Law and Order and Family Affairs.

Michael Begley has been listed as appearing as Mulligan in the just finished episode three written by Steve Thompson and directed by Jeremy Webb (coverage below); the actor has recently featured as Mark the hospital chaplain in Being Human, and as Orson in the revived Minder.

Mark Jermin Management has also listed two child actors to appear in roles this series.

Edmond Moulton appeared in the two-part story written by Matthew Graham and directed by Julian Simpson, playing a character named Adam.

Oscar Lloyd's character has yet to be revealed; he has had two prominent roles on television, playing Will Wylde in ITV's Emmerdale, and is now perhaps best recognised as Sidney in the BBC's Lark Rise to Candleford.

In Production

After the media-intensive, public-friendly filming for Doctor Who in Charlestown at the beginning of the month, February has since seen the production crew retreat from sight back into studio and other private locations to continue work on the Steve Thompson-penned episode three.

Though 'over the horizon', Hugh Bonneville continued to regale us with tweets on the 'high seas' during the course of his filming schedule:
07 19:07 Skulduggery on the high seas was knackering today.
Talk about poop-decked. Well done crew.

T P McKenna

Posted: 19 Feb 2011 02:28 AM PST

Veteran actor T P McKenna, who guested in Doctor Who during the 1980s, has died recently. The Irishman starred in various movies and television shows in a career spreading over five decades.

Born in 1929, he started his illustrious career by performing several Gilbert and Sullivan shows at St Patricks College. Despite spending six years working in banks and finance, McKenna never let go of the acting bug that he had caught and made the decision to join the prestigious Abbey Theatre.

Between the years of 1953 and 1962, the actor took part in over seventy stage roles whilst also performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre Company.

Whilst he starred in films alongside Hollywood talents such as Gregory Peck and Dustin Hoffman, he never shied away from television roles. He appeared in cult shows such as The Sweeney, Minder, The Saint, Blake's 7 and on three separate occasions in The Avengers.

Doctor Who fans will recognise the actor from the 1988 adventure The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, where McKenna played an egotistical and selfish explorer called Captain Cook. He brought a brilliant edge to the character, one of nobility, pride and ruthlessness all at the same time.

Irish actress Roma Tomelty described the actor as:

"One of a new generation of Irish actors with this fierce, wonderful energy, but still in the old natural tradition, he had a blend of both."

T P McKenna passed away on Sunday, February 13th 2011 after a long illness. He was 81 years old and is survived by a daughter and four sons. His funeral will take place at  St.Kilian's Church, Mullagh, Co.Cavan on Saturday 26th February, 2011.

You can find out more about the actor's career at www.tpmckenna.com.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Dalek Bikini Pulled Down

Posted: 18 Feb 2011 08:31 PM PST

So here I was ready to peel back the velvet curtain and show you the delights of BBC America's Doctor Who Swimsuit Calendar- a resplendent piece of erotica containing images apparently too disturbing for anyone… ever.

That's right Dalek's in tankini's have been banned across the universe. No more ogling of Sontarans in sarongs, no cheeky glances at The War Machine playing beach volleyball and for the love of all that's holy, no more Colin Baker in a mankini (maybe…)

None of the hundreds of links via social networks like Twitter or Tumblr are able to find the scantily clad Daleks nor does the BBC America Doctor Who site appear to have its own link to it. So why the sudden change of heart?

Was the very idea of a calender usually associated with Sports Illustrated Magazine using familiar faces from a children's programme too close to the bone for some parents? That said, that implies that someone actually looked at it.

In issues of censorship its tradition to not actually see/hear/acknowledged the thing that offends you before you blab to the powers that be: 'won't somebody think of the children!'

Of course we don't know if offence was taken at all but to pull a calendar in February is a little strange (maybe it was a Chinese calender?)

Still if you're keen to see the cover of the calendar – featuring a Dalek covering its bumps in a fetching pink bikini (you know you want to!) – then see this link here.

Of course, if anyone while looking on the Internet, happens to find images from it (you perverts!) then we'd be more than happy to post them here.
