| Posted: 22 Feb 2011 12:45 PM PST ![]() ![]() Born in Egypt, William Nicholas Stone Courtney spent his childhood and education in a variety of places - his father serving in the diplomatic service - before entering the Webber Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art after completing his National Service in 1950. He then entered rep in 1952 - his first job being actor/ASM in Cromer! - before a move to London brought him to the world of television. His first appearance in this media was as a Warrant Officer in the 1957 series Escape, followed by playing King Charles II in Looking About and Mark Norman in an episode of No Hiding Place. He was then to appear throughout the 1960s in shows like Callan and Sword of Honour, as well as popular fantasy genre titles like The Saint, The Champions, The Avengers, and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (alongside Master-to-be, Roger Delgado). His first brush with Doctor Who was to be as Space Security Agent Bret Vyon in the First Doctor epic The Daleks' Master Plan. For Doctor Who fans, of course, he will always be remembered as UNIT stalwart Lethbridge-Stewart. Originally slated to play Captain Knight in the Second Doctor adventure The Web Of Fear, he was 'promoted' to the role of Colonel by director Douglas Camfield when original actor David Langton pulled out, and returned a year as a newly promoted Brigadier in The Invasion, a role he was to become associated with for over forty years! Appearing as one of the main characters throughout the Third Doctor's incarnation, he was then to appear with every other classic series Doctor, both during the television show's original run and through the Big Finish audio adventures. Mentioned a number of times in the revived series of Doctor Who, he was to appear once more in character in 2008 as Sir Alistair in spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures. Work continued after his departure from Doctor Who, appearing in shows such as All Creatures Great And Small and Sink or Swim (both alongside Fifth Doctor Peter Davison), Shelley, Yes, Prime Minister and Only Fools and Horses; he also played Lt. Col. Robert Witherton in 1993's Then Churchill Said to Me. More recently, he appeared in popular shows like The Bill, Doctors, and Casualty. In 2008 he played the Archbishop of Canterbury in Incendiary. In 1997, he became the Honorary President of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, a position he was very proud to hold. There have been two autobiographies on his life, Five Rounds Rapid! in 1998 and Still Getting Away With It in 2005; his memoirs were also released by Big Finish as A Soldier In Time in 2002. He is survived by his wife Karen, his son Philip and daughter Bella. William Nicholas Stone Courtney (16th December 1929 - 22nd February 2011) On a personal note, it was a shock to hear the news tonight about Nick; having got to know him personally from my DWAS days, I have many fond memories of driving him to various promotions and being regaled by his stories down the local. Off-duty, he was as much the gentleman as he appeared in public, and will be sadly missed by family, friends and fandom alike. Chuck | ||

| Posted: 22 Feb 2011 09:08 AM PST Glamour magazine, that purveyor of style, sex and sexy stylish hair are honouring the Women of the Year and a certain Karen Gillan needs the assistance of you, the great unwashed. The delightful Miss Gillan has been nominated in the UK TV Actress category up against the likes of Keeley Hawes (Upstairs, Downstairs), Claire Foy (The Promise)- as well as a gaggle of modern Who gals including Lenora Crichlow (Season 3′s Gridlock), Sarah Parish (The Runaway Bride) and Rose Tyler herself Billie Piper (Secret Diary of a Call Girl). Not satisfied with just the one nod Gillan is also up for the Pandora Breakthrough award up against Women from all facets of entertainment such as Actress' Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone), Rooney Mara (The Social Network), Singers Rumer (Seasons of My Soul) and Ellie Goulding (Lights) as well as comedian Morgana Robinson (The Morgana Show). The Awards, sponsored by Pandora (the jewelry, not the Ferngully like planet from Avatar) will take place on June 7th. | Posted: 22 Feb 2011 08:15 AM PST The majestic medieval backdrop of Raglan Castle in South East Wales will be the temporary home of the TARDIS throughout this February half-term. The Welsh Assembly released the news on their website earlier today: The arrival of Doctor Who's world-famous blue telephone box at Raglan follows its recent appearance at Caerphilly Castle.BBC Cymru Wales and Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government's historic environment service, have been working together over a number of series to provide Doctor Who with some unusual and unique historical filming locations, including Neath Abbey and Caerphilly Castle. The TARDIS will be located in the Fountain Court area of the castle for visitors to admire. Jayne Rowlands, Cadw's Head of Presentation, said: "It's fantastic that we are able to welcome the Doctor's TARDIS to Raglan Castle this half-term, and we expect it will prove a big hit with fans from both the UK and overseas." | ||
| Matt Smith Laughs with Walliams Posted: 22 Feb 2011 06:54 AM PST Chatting away nine-to-the-dozen to anyone that would listen to him at the recent Doctor Who Experience launch, Matt Smith has been revealing a few things about the episode that guest stars David Walliams – namely that there are likely to be a few bloopers! Talking to the legendary lavatory red-top the Daily Star, Smith revealed that he and Walliams had just started filming last week (on an episode by School Reunion writer and Being Human creator Toby Whithouse), just a few months after appearing together on The Graham Norton Show.
Meanwhile, in hushed tones, Smith told reporters that he expects to be filming a Doctor Who Christmas special for 2011.
As long as it doesn't knock any Christmas trees down come broadcast, everything should be fine!
| Posted: 22 Feb 2011 06:03 AM PST Hopeful news today for the (extra small) legion of fans hoping to see the resurrection of Adric in a Doctor Who drama – Matthew Waterhouse is scheduled to make his Big Finish debut! While he won't actually be reprising the role of Adric for this venture, nor will he be taking on any role within the confines of Big Finish's Doctor Who range, this is a first step on the way to a potential return to the Whoniverse, which would thus make it all the more possible for Big Finish to produce a single story featuring every companion in Whostory (in our dreams, right?)! Mr. Waterhouse will become a fellow named John Cunningham in a future installment to the Dark Shadows audio range entitled "The Creeping Fog." John meets Quentin Collins in a pub and then saves his life from a mysterious supernatural fog. The two then decide to stay in a museum all night, apparently to hide from said fog and the "whispers" that come with it. Writer Simon Guerrier:
First a book, then a convention, now a recording studio – seems Matthew Waterhouse is quite busy these days! "The Creeping Fog" will be available this June. For more information, check out the Big Finish website.

| Matt fell off chair after being told Christmas special title! Posted: 22 Feb 2011 05:46 AM PST Matt Smith has teased us with an intriguing insight into the future by revealing that he nearly fell off his chair when he was told the title of the 2011 Christmas special! As the Daily Star reports, the Eleventh Doctor actor has revealed: "Steven Moffat has just told me the title of the 2011 Christmas special and [...] | ||

| Posted: 22 Feb 2011 03:52 AM PST Our favourite Eleventh Doctor actor Matt Smith appeared on BBC Radio 1 recently – and revealed that the River Song storyline will not disappoint Doctor Who fans. There's nothing much spoilery here – but if you're sensitive to these matters, hit your "back button"! Smith enthused about Steven Moffat's creation, who first appeared in 2008′s Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead opposite Tenth Doctor David Tennant. Played by Alex Kingston, River Song has since returned in The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone as well as The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang – and all we really know about her is that she likes archeology and has a criminal record… oh and we know how she dies (we think).
River is set to return in the opening two-part story of Series 6, in which she will aid the Doctor in his battle against the mysterious Silence ("Silents"…?). We've been waiting for an answer to the meme "silence will fall" since The Eleventh Hour - and this year we're going to find out what it's all about…
Meanwhile Matt is also thrilled with the mid-season cliffhanger that will spoil fans by ending the show 6 weeks early before bringing it back in the Autumn.
There is still some way to go before then, however – Doctor Who will probably return roughly around Easter. Or thereabouts.

| Posted: 22 Feb 2011 01:10 AM PST It's gruesome stuff, but pioneering surgeons have created a binary cardiac system, resulting in something that might resemble the chest cavity of a Time Lord! Heart surgeons at the UC San Diego's Thorton Hospital found that their patient, Tyson Smith, was too weak for a full transplant – so attached the donor heart to Smith's own, resulting in the film below in which the patients physiology resembles that of a Time Lord. While not a wholly new procedure, this occurs very rarely, although appropriately in the case of Tyson Smith the operation took place on St Valentine's Day 2011, and he seems to have reacted well to the treatment:
Dr Jack Copeland was the head surgeon that day.
Interestingly, the surgery was caught on camera and has been released on YouTube. Be warned, however – this isn't for the faint-hearted…

| The Doctor's Trip to New Zealand Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:22 PM PST Former Doctor Who star Peter Davison took quite a trip recently – a 21 hour flight to Australia and New Zealand to venture to a couple of conventions, with his wife and family in tow! Telling the story of the mammoth trip in the Daily Mail reveals two interesting things:
All in all it seems as though Peter and his family had a great time in New Zealand, with conventions, Lord of the Rings/Chronicles of Narnia landscapes and a visit to Weta thrown in. Not a bad way to engage with fans from the other side of the world! Our thoughts are with those affected by the recent Christchurch earthquake.
| Posted: 21 Feb 2011 09:25 PM PST There are rumours that the new series of Doctor Who will see the Eleventh Doctor face off against a robotic replica of himself. Whilst we wait to see if that will happen, you can enjoy the fact that Matt Smith went through something very similar recently in real life! The Doctor Who experience has just launched at the Kensington Olympia and it features a replica recreation of the Time Lord's most recent face. As Matt attended the launch of this event, he faced off against his double whilst overcoming past foes such as the Daleks who were also in attendance. Matt had a recreation of him made to stand alongside the TARDIS to oversee the event and even straightened the recreations bow ties when he met him! The process itself was fairly gruelling to go through as Matt explained:
The interactive experience, one of the first 0f its kind, features not only a comprehensive history of the shows fifty years but also an adventure where you play the Doctor's companion. Featuring, Daleks, Cybermen, Judoon and Weeping Angels the show is not one to be missed and is currently fully booked for the next two weeks. But it's entirely worth getting a ticket for as it boasts three separate TARDIS consoles to stand next to including the Fifth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctor's versions. The Doctor Who experience is now on and you can book tickets by visiting www.doctorwhoexperience.com.

| Matthew Waterhouse Joins Dark Shadows Posted: 21 Feb 2011 08:11 PM PST Matthew Waterhouse, who played Adric in Doctor Who, has recently recorded a guest appearance for the forthcoming Dark Shadows drama, The Creeping Fog. Matthew plays John Cunningham, who bumps into Quentin Collins in a London pub, the White Rabbit, in 1941. Their seemingly random encounter proves fortunate when the cowardly John finds himself saving Quentin from a supernatural fog. The two strangers then have to spend the night in a museum, desperately trying to hide from the fog… and the whispers that dwell within it. "Big Finish wanted a spooky story that would work for long-time fans of Dark Shadows but also for those new to the series," says writer Simon Guerrier. "I watched several episodes featuring Quentin, and I really liked this gruff character who would rather drink brandy than fight ghosts and demons. He's a powerful figure and good for drama because we never quite know how he'll react. John Cunningham is a total contrast to Quentin – timid, ordinary and eager to please. I'm delighted Joe Lidster and James Goss convinced Matthew Waterhouse to make his Big Finish debut." The Creeping Fog will be released in June 2011. We're also pleased to release trailers for the first two dramatic readings: The Blind Painter and The Death Mask. | ||
