| Vincent and the Doctor: Nebulous? Posted: 23 Feb 2011 08:04 AM PST Another year and another awards gathering is taking place and, as expected, an episode of Doctor Who is in the running to win a prize! The Nebula Awards, hosted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America group (or SFWA), will be taking place on Saturday 21st May 2011 at the Washing ton Hilton in Washington D.C so if you're around the area on that date you may just run into a few familiar faces! Categories include best Short Story, best Novelette, best Novella, best Novel and the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy. The final category which will grab the interest of any Doctor Who fan is The Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation which features the Series 5 episode Vincent and the Doctor. Both Richard Curtis, the writer of the episode and Jonny Campbell are name checked. The episode itself stands up against some pretty heavy competition; in fact it's all Hollywood movies. Nominations include Despicable Me, Inception, Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. So out of all the television shows in the world, Doctor Who is the only one that competes against Tinsel town! The awards will be voted on and presented by members of the SFWA so its unfortunately not open to the public to sway the votes. But Doctor Who has always held its own so here's keeping our fingers crossed that our favourite television show beats all the multi million dollar movies that came out last year! To find out more, you can visit www.nebulaawards.com or www.sfwa.org – voting takes place between March 1st and March 30th. | ||

| DWA Design a Monster competition Posted: 23 Feb 2011 01:28 AM PST Doctor Who Adventures magazine has launched a 'Design a Monster' competition. The winner will see their creation battle the Doctor, Amy and Rory in a special comic strip in the magazine and be made into a model to go on display at the Doctor Who Experience in Olympia, London.Comic artist John Ross offers the readers some great tips to help them create the perfect creature: The great thing about Doctor Who monsters is that they can be scary but a bit funny, too. For example, a really scary face could be balanced out by something quite wacky, like a foot that's joined on backwards, or one arm that's much bigger than the other. Things that tend to look good on monsters are wrinkles, extra eyes, fewer eyes, long tongues, tentacles, spots, stripes, spikes and funny-looking alien weapons/gadgets. Monsters based on animals are quite popular. For example, you could take the head of a rat and put it on the body of a chimpanzee and add tentacles. Posture is always something you have to think about, too. If your monster is strong and confident, it should stand straight and tall. If it's a bit more nervous and unsure of itself, it could be hunched over, possibly with slumped shoulders. If it's just a jumbled mass of tentacles with a head, it's a bit trickier to give an idea of the creature's personality. Your monster has to pose a threat to the Doctor, so will need some special powers or weapons. It could fire energy beams from its fingertips/tentacles, laser beams from its eyes or cannonballs from a hole in its belly - whatever you think is interesting. Weapons could be a giant device which could destroy the planet or a tiny alien flower which looks like a daisy but releases a scent which sends people to sleep. It's also good to colour your monster nice and brightly so he stands out in a crowd. How to enter Download the PDF entry form by clicking on the button below, then print it out and draw your monster! Fill in the monster's details, along with your name, age, address and daytime telephone number. Put the page in an envelope and send it to: DWA DESIGN, PO Box 8951, Market Harborough LE16 0EF, or scan the page and email your design to design@dwacomps.co.uk Download the pdf entry form For full terms and conditions please visit www.dwamag.com/design-a-monster. | ||

| Actor Nicholas Courtney passes away, aged 81 Posted: 23 Feb 2011 12:42 AM PST It is with great sadness that we report the death of veteran actor Nicholas Courtney, who passed away in London yesterday, aged 81, after a short illness. | Posted: 23 Feb 2011 12:32 AM PST As we all know, Torchwood is coming back to our screens very soon after a long, long absence. Over the first three series, many of the regulars were killed off while fighting alien nasties and left over after the dust settled were two surviving members of the Torchwood hub, Captain Jack Harkness and his loyal friend Gwen Cooper. As Torchwood restarts this year, it's gone through some major changes structurally and the fourth series, or Miracle Day as its known, will feature a wealth of well known actors to bring it back into not only the UK's television limelight but also America's. Eve Myles, the actress who plays Gwen has had a short video posted recently (which you can see below) where she talks about why Gwen is such an integral part of Torchwood, why she keeps coming back to fight for planet Earth and also the changes that the character has gone through since we last saw her in Children of Earth. Myles also talks of Russell T Davies' skill of writing for the show and what draws her to keep coming back to the role. It's a short video and starts to give a flavour for the return of Torchwood. Miracle Day will, like its predecessor Children of Earth, follow a linked story throughout its newest series rather than the old "monster of the week" format that ran through its first two series. It looks set to be the most epic adventure for the Torchwood team yet and is surely going to blow televisions viewer's socks off all over the world. No official transmission date has been set for Torchwood: Miracle Day as yet but rumour is looking at a summer release. | ||

| Nebula nomination for Vincent and the Doctor Posted: 22 Feb 2011 11:05 PM PST The Doctor Who story Vincent and the Doctor has been nominated for the The Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation in the 2010 Nebula Awards, an annual event held by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. The episode, penned by writer Richard Curtis, is the only television episode in this category, and is up against the films Despicable Me, How To Train Your Dragon, Inception, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Toy Story 3. The winners are selected by members of the SWFA during March, with the results announced at the Nebula Awards Banquet, taking place at the Washington Hilton, Washington D.C. on 21st May. Vincent and the Doctor had previously been nominated for a Mind Mental Health Media Award last year but lost out to Channel 4 drama Shameless. Doctor Who has been nominated for a Nebula Award twice in the past: The Girl in the Fireplace lost out in the Best Script category to Howl's Moving Castle in the 2006 awards, and the following year saw Blink miss the award in favour of Pan's Labyrinth - both were penned by the current lead writer, Steven Moffat. | ||
| RIP Nicholas Courtney: Splendid Chap, All of Him Posted: 22 Feb 2011 10:26 PM PST
The BBC, finally, have an obituary, though the best obituary is by actor Toby Hadoke in The Guardian. There are many lovely tributes to this lovely man, but Tom Baker has one of the first and most touching. Some of the better fan tributes come from Keith Topping and The Middleman creator and TV writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach. Additionally, Doctor Who DVD content producer Ed Stradling has a YouTube tribute. For me, Nick Courtney wasn't just the Brigadier. He was the gentleman who gave one of the most haunting, memorable performances I've seen on television in an episode of All Creatures Great and Small as a despondent man who has to put down his dog who represented the man's life. The look on his face when Christopher Timothy's James Herriot tells him the grave news is astounding: it's totally understated but packs an emotional punch that has stayed with me for decades. Coming to Doctor Who a little later, I was flabbergasted when I realized that was the same actor best known for saying "Chap with wings—five rounds rapid!" But that was Nick Courtney all over—the man was a talented actor who I wish had been given more opportunity to showcase his considerable abilities, particularly after the 1980s. I met Nick Courtney in 2004, where I interviewed him on stage with Richard Franklin at the Gallifrey One convention. It wasn't the most optimal of circumstances—Nick was in the middle of some kind of a dispute with Richard which made the whole interview a protracted, odd, somewhat difficult affair (I was asked to interview them separately though they compromised on coming together at the end). And yet, two things stood out to me from that experience. The first was, whatever the dispute was, I never learned what it was from Nick himself, who was too discreet a gentleman to talk about such private matters and was pleasant, cheerful and professional about the whole thing. The second thing that stood out to me happened later that afternoon as I sat and had a drink with him, his friend (and biographer) Michael McManus and others. When my gin and tonic came, I reached for my wallet. He gestured for me to hold fire. "This round's on the Brig," he said. That was Nick Courtney from my brief experience of him: Cordial, convivial, thoroughly decent. And he loved Doctor Who and its fans. He will be missed.

Filming was away in private throughout this week, with Monday kicking off at the Orlando International Airport.
