"Ace" boxed set in the works

2|Entertain have announced a new boxed set via their @ClassicDW Twitter feed:
The Ace Box commissioned and in production.
Whilst no other details have been revealed at present, it seems likely that the set will be themed around the Seventh Doctor's sidekick, Dorothy "Ace" McShane.

At this late stage in the release schedule, there are only three other stories featuring the character that have yet to come out on DVD: Dragonfire, Ace's introductory story; The Happiness Patrol, with Helen A, Fifi, and the Kandyman; and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy with the Psychic Circus and the Gods of Ragnarok.

Fear Her: Time to Re-evaluate?

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 08:00 AM PST

In their ongoing series "Isn't it about time you gave… another chance" the SFX website has for some reason decided to cast its eyesolus over 2006′s muted Doctor Who abusive father-fest Fear Her.

Not exactly a classic, Fear Her tells the story of the day the Doctor and Rose landed in a London suburb that was plagued by missing children and a bump in the road, where the freaky-voiced Chloe Webber and her mother were terrorised by the psychic manifestation of her abusive father, crayon format inside the girl's wardrobe.

All of this thanks to a supposedly benign entity, a lost Isolus, which was sent home thanks to the "love" in the Olympic torch, which the Doctor managed to get to the stadium in time to launch the games.

If you're still with me, here's a recollection from our own review of the episode, from the usually laid-back Brian A. Terranova…

While I didn't sit there this week saying to myself "when will it end?" I did find myself saying "where's the proper monsters?" The last time I saw a proper monster in Doctor Who would have to be this year's Cybermen story; at least they were a real threat. Fear Her didn't really strike me with fear.  All I saw was a little girl doing a fine exorcist impression and drawing some lovely pictures.

(You can read more about the review and our thoughts on the episode in Ultimate Regeneration, which will be out soon…)

Now in fairness, we're fans of the episode's writer, Matthew Graham (co-creator of Life on Mars), and suspect something was lost between script and screen. If it wasn't then the whole "abusive father in wardrobe" thing is far too disturbing for family drama, certainly as pitched, at least.

Alert! Appreciation Archives Attack!

Posted: 26 Feb 2011 07:01 AM PST

Sound the alarms!  Everyone evacuate the internet!  The Doctor Who Appreciation Society has placed the Whoniverse under siege with a brand-new and highly-trained army of historical documents in their original formats!

On Saturday, 12 February, the longest-running Doctor Who fan club known to many as simply DWAS, so infamous that they're wanted on seven planets for having the nerve to protest the show's cancellation in 1989, ambushed dozens of New Whovians who deny the existence of any Doctor aside from David Tennant with an infantry of interviews from the olden days, including Ian Scoones in 1980, John Wiles in 1981, Peter Moffatt in 1983, and Verity Lambert in 2005, among others.

The Society has this weekend unleashed a second wave of dated documents to back up the interviews and further intrigue Whovians who are into that sort of thing.  These include both pamphlets from conventions in the early 80s and courteous handwritten letters from behind-the-scenes individuals (such as John Nathan-Turner) apologizing for being unable to attend said conventions.

Brace yourself for further updates to come, which are believed to consist of fictional newspaper articles, reference publications, and something about the Doctor's changing faces.

If this villainous army, code-named "The Celestial Archive" succeeds, we may forever be forced to live with the loss of those closed-minded individuals who use 'classic series' and 'rubbish' in the same sentence.  If you ever encounter an archived artifact, don't trust it, and don't follow any links that will lead you into its death-trap.  That is all.

Grand Moff's Noms

Lots of nominations are flying around for the various awards that traditionally take place at this time of year, with Steven Moffat getting "the nod" for his visions for Doctor Who and Sherlock in not one but two different awards!

First up is the Saturn Award which lists A Christmas Carol and Sherlock in the Best Television Presentation category.

Best Television Presentation:

Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol         (BBC America)

Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special           (NBC)

The Pillars of the Earth                       (Starz)

Sherlock                                              (PBS)

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena             (Starz)

The Walking Dead                              (AMC)

The Saturn Award is now in its 37th year, and is the annual award of The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films and covers TV, movies and stage.

Meanwhile, the Broadcasting Press Guild nominates Moffat in the Writers Award category for both Doctor Who and Sherlock (where Mark Gatiss and Series 6 writer Stephen Thompson are included in the nomination), while Sherlock goes up against Downton Abbey for the title of Best Drama Series.
