| Posted: 17 Feb 2011 07:08 AM PST For all of you Doctor Who fans located in France, we have some good news – the latest series of Doctor Who continues this weekend! Following the recent launch on France 4, the first series to star Matt Smith and Karen Gillan continues with Le Labyrinthe des Anges (partie 1 et partie 2) and Les Vampires de Venise or, translated to English, The Time of Angels, Flesh and Stone and The Vampires of Venice! The episodes will be screening on France 4, showing from 8:35pm on Saturday February 19th. You can check out the (rather well dubbed) trailer below… Also showing this month, a day later in fact, will be the premier of Christopher and his Kind. This poignant drama stars Matt Smith and is about writer Christopher Isherwood and details an important part of his life. Where you're exceptionally lucky is in the fact that you actually get to see it before we do in the UK, so think of it as an exclusive premiere! The piece will air on February 20th on the Artz channel under the French title Christopher et Heinz. So, you lucky people, tune in from this Saturday and discover more reasons why Matt Smith is considered one of the UK's best acting talents at the moment! With thanks to Aurelie! | ||||||||||||

| Posted: 17 Feb 2011 05:32 AM PST Three brief casting updates today: Frances Barber (pictured), Christina Chong, and Geoffrey Burton will all be appearing in episodes of Doctor Who Season 32! Frances Barber's television appearances include Midsomer Murders, The Fattest Man in Britain, and A Passionate Woman (alongside Billie Piper). She'll be playing someone called Kovarian. Christina Chong has a number of small television roles and commercials on her resume, and she'll also show up in the movie Johnny English Reborn when it comes out later this year. Her character in Doctor Who will have the slightly amusing name of Lorna Bucket. Both actresses will appear in Steven Moffat's Peter-Hoar-directed episode 777, which may or may not be called Demons Run. It's unclear for now which episode Geoffrey Burton, known for Outlaws and The Bill, will appear in, but he will portray a "Nasa Man," which implies that he may have something to do with the spacesuit-wearing fellow seen in the Series 6 trailer. Doctor Who, as it does every year, will premiere in the spring on BBC One. (via WhovianNet, twice) | ||||||||||||

| Posted: 17 Feb 2011 03:52 AM PST The Whoniverse has gone Doctor Who Experience mad, as you might have guessed, with the long-anticipated event opening at London's Olympia Two venue on Sunday, 20th February 2011. Various websites and news organs have featured the event in the run up to the launch, with the BBC's Official Doctor Who website in particular demonstrating some of the marvellous costumes and set recreations, such as the various TARDIS interiors, and monsters such as Davros and a Zygon. A recent interview with former Doctor Who special FX man Mike Tucker revealed the work that had gone into restoring some of the old monster costumes which have spend the last 30+ years cluttering shelves, costume departments and auction halls. Of course it wouldn't be a true Doctor Who Experience without the Daleks – and a particularly interesting feature at the event lines up 5 different models, from a 1960s version right up to date with the Dalek Paradigm build. This is the Evolution of the Daleks exhibit (which you can see decorating this article) and it is accompanied by a similar exhibit based on the Cybermen, featured at SFX along with the restoration of Robot's K1 Giant Robot. Previews of the exhibition by press and lucky competition winners have already taken place, with publications as disparate as The Times and Regwardware getting a look in – the latter explains how the opening 20 minutes of the exhibition is structured as a storyline in which guests must help the Doctor (Matt Smith on a video loop) be reunited with the TARDIS, although they do wonder if there is truly anything new in the event if previous exhibitions have been visited. Clearly there is a difference between the Doctor Who Experience and the Cardiff and Newcastle static events that are now closed, and we here at Kasterborous would be surprised if this didn't turn out to be the greatest Doctor Who event yet, based solely on the number of exhibits and the care that has gone into bringing them to life. Opening on Sunday, 20th February 2011 at London's Olympia 2, the Doctor Who Exhibition is open 10am to 6pm 7 days a week and has an entry price of £20 for adults and £15.50 for children (5-16) and £65 for a family of four. Note however that these are "on the door" charges – pre-booking can save up to 30% on this price, and you can do this online at www.doctorwhoexperience.com/booktickets. | ||||||||||||

| Posted: 17 Feb 2011 02:53 AM PST The Audit Bureau of Circulations have now released statistics relating to the distribution figures of magazines for the second half of 2010, which includes details relating to both official publications, Doctor Who Magazine (Panini) and Doctor Who Adventures (BBC). When compared to previous periods, the data reveals how the average circulation trends have fared:
The figures indicate that, whilst DWM has seen a drop in readership in recent months, DWA's has continued to increase. In the latter's case, there was a massive leap in readership of almost 20% in the first half of last year - tying in with Matt Smith's debut as the Eleventh Doctor! Publication certificates provide further breakdowns on circulation; for instance 14% of DWM's and 17% of DWA's sales are through subscription, whereas figures for general sci-fi magazine SFX over last year show a much higher subscription rate of 31% (total average circulation 31,360). The figures for the next six months are expected on 18th August 2011. | ||||||||||||

| Posted: 16 Feb 2011 07:56 PM PST Rumours of a possible Doctor Who 3D animated series have been confirmed by the tweets of voice over artist Jay Britton. Now, the tweets also confirm that this series has nothing to do with the BBC, the current or past series' but are rather a fan made effort featuring a new Doctor and new companions- one/all of which will feature the dulcet tones of Britton himself. So far the plan is to make 10 shorts available on the web only. Britton, who can also be heard as the voice of the humans in Warlords 2, has just received the first script which goes someway to address the question of just who is the new Doctor in a predictable way:
Hmm…If that didn't set alarm bells ringing then Brittons appraisal of the script via his Facebook page won't help matters any further.
Still, fan made projects have given us all a few glorious moments of 'what if's' and 'What the hell?' though the technological mountain does seem a little too steep for a fan made project to conquer convincingly (nothing quite fails like faulty 3D technology. How often do you come away from a movie that you've missed that extra dimension of and not felt more than a little cheated?) but all jugdment will be reserved until the final product hits the web at the beginning of March. | Tom's new recording of The Boy Who Kicked Pigs available to download NOW Posted: 16 Feb 2011 10:00 AM PST Tom has recently made a new recording of his book, The Boy Who Kicked Pigs, for Silksoundbooks and it is now available as a download on their website. Links to the website are contained in the main body of this news item or in Tom&os;s current newsletter. Tom wrote The Boy Who Kicked Pigs in 1999 and it was published by Faber and Faber. It is a short, gruesome, but hilariously funny story about the fate of a boy with a habit of kicking pigs who causes havoc in the community around him. It is still in print and is published in 8 other languages - including Chinese. |
