Doctor Who Appreciation Society's Celestial Archive: Voices from the Past

Having started in 1976 the Society has accumulated over the years a huge library of material, and in this part of the website we will make the best parts available for you to view, with a new theme added each month.

Wherever possible we have presented the selected articles in their original format, to give a true flavour of what those old publications were like. In the coming months we will present a selection of items drawn from Society publications - Celestial Toyroom, TARDIS, Cosmic Masque, STINFOs and more, including correspondence and photographs you may not have seen.

Although we have an almost complete set of DWAS publications much of what has been printed over the years was 'of it's time' and is unlikely to be of general interest today. Therefore, in order to present the best of what is available we have selected articles, features and interviews based around specific themes and will bring them together here in different categories. There are also a small number of Society publications that we can present in their entirety and some will also be available to view online in due course.

  • Ian Scoones Interviewed - Ian Scoones (1940-2010) contributed Visual Effects to many Doctor Who stories inclusing City of Death, Curse of Peladon and The Invisible Enemy.
  • Interview - Gerry Davis - Gerry Davis (23 February 1930 - 31 August 1991) was a British television writer, best known for his contributions to the science-fiction genre. He also wrote for the soap operas Coronation Street and United! From 1966 until the following year he was the script editor on Doctor Who, for which he co-created the popular cybernetic monsters the Cybermen.
  • Interview - Verity Lambert - Verity Ann Lambert, OBE (27 November 1935 – 22 November 2007) was an English television and film producer. She is best known as the founding producer of Doctor Who and for her many credits including Adam Adamant Lives!, The Naked Civil Servant, Rock Follies, Minder, Widows, G.B.H., Jonathan Creek and Love Soup.
  • Michael Craze - Ben Jackson - Michael Craze (29 November 1942 – 8 December 1998) was a British actor noted for his role of Ben Jackson, a companion of the Doctor, in the long-running BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who. He played the part from 1966 to 1967 alongside both William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton.
  • The Direction - Peter Moffatt - To tie in with the 20th Anniversary special The Five Doctors the DWAS prduces a large format commemorative booklet called The Making of the Five Doctors. This is an interview with director Peter Moffat about taken from that publication.
  • The John Wiles Interview - Part 1 - John Wiles (20 September 1925-5 April 1999) was a television writer and producer, now best known for being the second producer of Doctor Who, succeeding Verity Lambert. He was credited as producer on four serials between 1965 and 1966, namely The Myth Makers, The Daleks' Master Plan (which lasted for twelve episodes), The Massacre of St Bartholomew's Eve, and The Ark.
  • The John Wiles Interview - Part 2

Oxford University Doctor Who Society - Tides of Time archive: First Doctor special

The Tides of Time started publishing in 1990, just as BBC Video turned their attention towards releasing more Doctor Who on VHS and also increased the proportion of black and white serials in their schedule. This context, combined with fannish curiosity about the early years of the programme and a scholarly drive to seek the essence of Doctor Who in the origins of the series, meant that Tides has never neglected the first Doctor. I've now uploaded some fiction featuring the first Doctor published over the years, as well as a few story reviews and our tribute to Sydney Newman.

All the articles are scans from the original photocopied or inkjet-printed fanzines, except for the reviews of The Aztecs and The Dalek Invasion of Earth where the quality of the originals was too poor. These have been reset.

All the articles remain the copyright of the contributors.

Briggs Praises Matt Smith

Posted: 18 Feb 2011 08:09 AM PST

As a regular Doctor Who contributor for the TV series and the Producer of the Big Finish audios, you can pretty much place a safe bet that if Nicholas Briggs likes something about Doctor Who, he's going to be correct.

So it's very nice to see that the writer and actor has praised Matt Smith for his performance as the Doctor.  Briggs, who is not only responsible for keeping the Fifth, Sixth , Seventh and Eighth Doctors alive via monthly audio plays, provides the voice of the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Judoon and various other monsters  for the BBC television series of Doctor Who.

Talking about his co star he commented on how "magical" Matt Smith was and talked about the edge that the actor brings to the role:

"He has a charm, a kind of real charisma. He's not just sort of nuts and strange – he's nuts and charming. He's also fantastic to work with."

Briggs himself has always proved popular with the Doctor Who production team and got on especially well with David Tennant and Billie Piper.

Smith's version of the Doctor has been compared to Patrick Troughton's performance as the Second Doctor in the 1960's as the actor chose to watch one of his adventures as research before starting the role.

It's lovely to hear that the production team are still getting on so well even thought there have been some massive changes in the last two years; it shows a strong force behind everyone's favourite show!

Tweetview time again! 2|Entertain's ClassicDW have released a trailer for its up coming Tweetview 3 for the William Hartnell Doctor Who classic The War Machines which takes place this Saturday at 20:00 GMT.

Fans are able to simultaneously watch the serial and tweet in random interesting facts in a bid to out nerd and slay their fellow geeks with stinging witticisms. Previously Earthshock and The Horror of Fang Rock have also been dissected in this manner.

For those of you a little unfamiliar with The War Machines its basically what would happen if SkyNet was controlled by the Post Office… it features a machine call WOTAN (Will Operating Thought Analogue anagram fans!), a self-aware computer that is about to be linked up to its counterparts around the world and which decides that humans are in fact vermin and should be wiped out.

Building an army of like minded war machines WOTAN unleashes hell on the general public and more diabolically makes their post arrive late…

Ultimate Regeneration Latest

Posted: 18 Feb 2011 12:20 AM PST

Pre-order purchasers of Ultimate Regeneration will be delighted to see this photograph – I've just received the proof copy for perusal for any changes that may or may not be required!

As you can see from the cover, it's looking pretty good so far, and I'll be spending time over the weekend reading the proof in order to iron out any last-minute-changes that might be necessary.

You can see the cover is looking pretty good – however for some reason the angle of the photo makes it look as if the book is either tiny or I have giant hands. I can assure you that neither case is true – the proof is perfectly formed with loose pages (as one would expect) waiting for me to cast an eye over the title (finally!).

Incidentally, you can still pre-order Ultimate Regeneration at the reduced price of £9.99 (plus P&P) – this offer doesn't have long to go, and the book will be reverting to the full price of £14.99 on the first day of dispatch.

Now the proof was delivered this morning so we're still a little behind the point I wanted to be at this stage. As such I believe we're looking at early March for dispatch of the book, as the proof requires signing off.

An email message will be sent out this weekend with this and any further news to all of our wonderfully patient pre-order purchasers

Magazines See Sales Increase

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 11:34 PM PST

ABC figures for the magazine industry have been released, with Doctor Who Adventures seeing a massive increase of over 25% over the past 12 months!

No doubt buoyed by the return of Doctor Who in 2010 with Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, the "DWM for kids" Doctor Who Adventures saw an increase of 26.8 % year-on-year to 56,648 – pretty amazing!

Back in August months ago we learned that Doctor Who Adventures was part of a group of BBC Magazines publications that had recorded an increase on the previous 6 months, so these results are in tune with that and the pick-up in the title's performance experienced following a year (2009) that featured only three new episodes.

Meanwhile Doctor Who Magazine continues to ride high, with 35,000 readers ensuring its place as the top selling sci-fi monthly. Placing this in context, that definition means that DWM outsells SFX!

Congratulations to all at Doctor Who Adventures and DWM!

It has come to our attention that there is an audio fault on the download version of the CD Extras for Doctor Who: Lucie Miller.

The error occurs in the closing minutes of the behind-the-scenes documentary, and consists of an annoying, repeating, clicking sound which increases and decreases in volume. This error was not present on the CD master sent to our production office for checking, but was unfortunately present on the version sent to our web editor for uploading. At the moment, we do not know whether this error exists on the CD versions, as copies of the finished product have not yet arrived at our production office.

We hope you will accept our sincerest apologies for this drop in our usually high professional standards. To make amends, we're offering this free podcast version of the CD Extras (without annoying clicking).

SPOILER ALERT!!! Please be aware that this CD Extras documentary is designed to be enjoyed AFTER you've listened to the episode Lucie Miller. If you listen to it before you've heard Lucie Miller, some comments in the documentary may reveal plot developments and spoil your enjoyment of the story.

Review: The Second Doctor Box-set - CD

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 08:08 PM PST

Manufacturer: Big Finish Productions

Written By: Dick Sharples & Terry Nation (Adapted by Simon Guerrier & Nicholas Briggs)

RRP: &ound;25.00

Release Date: 31st December 2010

Reviewed by: Paul Everitt for Doctor Who Online

Review Posted: 18th February 2011

Big Finish continue their Lost Stories season, with a very special box set dedicated to the second doctor; the great Patrick Troughton. The box set includes two adventures plus over fifty minutes of bonus material – including interviews and a look behind the scenes. The first adventure sees Earth in a very different light, with a very sinister undertone throughout. The second adventure is rather special in its own right, a lost story involving the mighty Daleks which never saw the light of day...

The first adventure, Prison In Space see’s the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe looking for a little vacation. Even Jamie has become tired of fighting “wee little beasties”. Promising them a vacation, with perhaps a picnic, the Doctor flies the TARDIS to safe haven – one with plenty of greenery and peace, or so he thinks.

It’s not long before our heroes find themselves in trouble, arrested for trespassing the soon find that their so called haven is actually run by a mad tyrant – Chairman Babs. Not only do they find themselves arrested, the Doctor and Jamie soon realise that this world is run by women, who see men as inferiors – men are the weakest and are therefore treated like animals, with contempt and disdain. Soon things get even more serious as Jamie and the Doctor are sent to a prison in space, trailed and convicted for their crime – Zoe is left in the hands of the Chairman, forced to choose sides – with the resulting events proving to be explosive and quite unexpected.

For this adaptation we see the return of Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury, reprising their roles as the Doctors companions. It’s great to hear the Scottish accent of Jamie return; Zoe is as bright as ever, in a part which really pushes Zoe to the limits. The sound effects bring back the sense of the sixties incarnation of the show, helping to push the narrative along at a great pace. Big Finish has adapted this lost script brilliantly, bringing back the essence of Patrick Troughton’s Doctor. This could have easily proved to be one of the second Doctor’s best TV adventures...

Moving onto the second adventure included in this box set, The Daleks: The Destroyers, is the adaptation of the unmade US TV Pilot. Big Finish has adapted this script into a gripping space adventure, full of tension and scares. This is definitely one to listen to by yourself in the dark.

The adventure takes place around Explorer Base 1, a human exploration station – located on the surface of meteorite M5. Newly built and protected by a force wall, the occupants have no reason, to think of anything dangerous, from the swamp lands laying, just past the force wall. However in the darkness lurks a terrible threat – The Daleks. Within the first five minutes of the adventure, the station is ripped apart – all personnel killed in cold blood.

Enter our three heroes, sent to investigate by the Special Space Security forces. Sarah Kingdom, played brilliantly by Jean Marsh is an intelligent, efficient agent, who has a habit of screaming. Mark Seven the android, with an emotion chip, classic good looks and superhuman strength. Played by Alan Cox, who gives the character life, making great use of the lines to inject some life, into what could have been a dull character. Then we have the leader of the squad, one Jason Corey rugged and intelligent. Jason is played by Chris Porter with an authority, which brings the character to life in your head. The intrepid trio soon find themselves playing a cat and mouse game with the Daleks, trying to remain hidden – whilst discovering the alien’s master plan.

The narration to the story, drags you into this new world – masterfully read and acted making the hairs on your body tingle with excitement. The story is a lot darker than I had imagined, giving the Daleks a meaner darker look, than I can remember from the sixties. Even though there is a definite darker undertone, Big Finish have still managed to make it sound like an original episode from yester year. The main theme brought flashes of sixties TV flooding back, its catchy American style stays in your head, hours after listening to it. The score sets new standards, becoming at times operatic in substance, making you tense up, feel elation all at the right moments. Even the sound effects help you build a picture of what could have been, allowing you to connect to the main characters. A blinding story, which ends on a cliff-hanger, which I hope is resolved.

Also included is a fifty minute documentary, detailing how Prison In Space happened. A fascinating look into how the original script was found and the process that followed. It’s full of fact and gives us an insight into the love that the team had for Patrick Troughton.

This box set prove compelling listening for any fan out there, showcasing what could have been if things were done a little differently.

Catch 22′s 27

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 06:27 PM PST

Gallifrey One, the wildly popular North American Doctor Who convention, will… er, convene for the twenty-second time in Los Angeles this weekend, being formally titled Gallifrey One's Catch-22: Islands of Mystery.

Fans present at the big event may find themselves fainting twenty-seven times, as there are twenty-seven big (many of them HUGE) names scheduled to attend, listed as follows:

Actors

  • Fifth Doctor Peter Davison
  • Fifth Doctor companions Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric, otherwise known as Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton, and Matthew Waterhouse
  • Second Doctor companion Jamie McCrimmon, occasionally called Frazer Hines
  • Fourth Doctor companion K-9, sometimes referred to as John Leeson
  • Third Doctor regular Sergeant Benton actor John Levene
  • Eighth Doctor companion Grace Holloway actress Daphne Ashbrook
  • Paul Kasey, who played that monster in the new series (you know, all of them)
  • Ian McNeice (Winston Churchill in Victory of the Daleks)
  • Cush Jumbo (Lois Habiba in Torchwood: Children of Earth)
  • Philip Olivier (Hex, various Big Finish stories)
  • Sarah Douglas (Elizabeth Meadows in Blood of the Cybermen; the Entity in TARDIS)

Behind-the-scenes people

  • Doctor Who producer Tracie Simpson
  • Doctor Who writer Gareth Roberts
  • Prosthetics/Special Effects designers Neill Gorton and Rob Mayor
  • Torchwood: Miracle Day writers Jane Espenson and Doris Egan
  • The Sarah Jane Adventures producer and writer Phil Ford
  • Sarah Jane director Joss Agnew
  • Torchwood and Doctor Who writer James Moran
  • Location manager Gareth Skelding
  • Who novelist and script editor Gary Russell
  • Big Finish's Jason Haigh-Ellery
  • Former Doctor Who Magazine editor Clayton Hickman
  • Who graphic novelist Tony Lee

And that's just the official guest list!  If you're there, you may also encounter some important people not included in the twenty-seven, like documentary filmmaker Ed Stradling, who will be screening his Davison-era documentary, Come In Number Five, presented by David Tennant, to be included in the upcoming Revisitations II DVD box set.  On top of that, Nerdist podcaster Chris Hardwick might approach you (yes, YOU) on Saturday with a film crew, as he'll be interviewing Doctor Who fans for a segment on an upcoming episode of The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson!

Sure, Gallifrey One's attracting a swarm of famous people this year, but what's equally remarkable is the ten-thousand-times-bigger herd of Who names who won't be there.  In most other franchises, twenty-seven is oftentimes the vast majority of semi-recognizable people involved (some don't even have that many!), but in the Whoniverse, that number barely scratches the surface.  Just a reminder of how big a show Doctor Who really is.

Gallifrey One's Catch 22: Islands of Mystery runs Friday through Sunday at the LAX Airport Mariott Hotel.
