| Posted: 01 Mar 2011 01:18 AM PST I was at the same convention as him, but I didn't get to see the Nerdist's Chris Hardwick when he taped a segment at the Gallifrey One convention in LA the weekend before last for The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The closest I came was being in an autograph session that was put into lockdown while they filmed Chris and Bridger being chased by a Dalek in the hallway outside. They aired the finished segment on last night's show… I want to stress that it's a very funny, affectionate sketch. I really want to stress that as it wasn't mean-spirited in the slightest (I say this as a victim of the butchery that was CBC's segment on Doctor Who fans on The Hour in 2005—another rant for another time.) But… Here's the thing. Every time I tell people I went to LA to a Doctor Who convention, this is precisely what people think it was: people dressed up in costume, pretending they're characters from the telly. And that certainly did happen and it was awesome, especially the people in the Movellan costumes and the true-to-TV Quark. (Also, as a heterosexual male, I wasn't particularly complaining about the proliferation of Amy Ponds around this year). And it's not that I don't appreciate costuming (and I would never disparage it—especially as I spent the better part of a decade directing my fannish energies to other avenues like producing a fanzine. Plus… Movellans, Quarks and a proliferation of Amy Ponds) But my Gallifrey One wasn't that. It never is. Not in the slightest. My experience of Gallifrey, as it is of any Doctor Who con I attend, is mostly spent hanging out with non-costumed fans and friends and talking, bantering, drinking, listening to guests and talking about Doctor Who. A lot. Usually starting around 9am and ending at 3am the following day. (OK, not always—jet lag got in the way this year). I have never worn a Doctor Who costume to such an event (OK, I brought my Doctor Who scarf once to use as a prop). But I go to cons, and I love Gallifrey particularly for this, because it is a place where I can speak to fellow geeks and be understood. I'm far from alone. I would say the majority of con-goers are people like me. The only difference is we rarely, almost never, get filmed on the TV news, on Late Night shows, on anything. Because ordinary looking people being enthusiastic and just hanging out for a weekend to talk about their favourite TV show is, frankly, kind of boring to film. It's always about the people in costumes, who are spectacularly televisual (of course they are—it's why we watched the characters they're dressed up as on TV in the first place!) And so the distortion about what a convention actually is just gets fed and grows. I honestly don't know why this bugs me. It's not like Chris Hardwick was coming to the LAX Marriott to film a documentary for PBS. It was a skit for a late night show (one of the best ones going, too—Craig's comments last night on Charlie Sheen were so true). And it was deeply affectionate for the subject matter, on a show that is hugely supportive to Doctor Who. Plus, I was really pleased to see Shaun Lyon—a superstar of a convention organizer—get some on-camera love. I guess when it comes down to it I'm tired of having to explain to people I don't go to LA every February to dress up as Amy Pond. Well, except for that one time.

| Posted: 01 Mar 2011 01:04 AM PST Following on from last year, Brit Movie Tours - an independent company that runs regular tours of television and film locations - has announced a further season of tours based on Doctor Who that will run through this coming summer. This year will see a new regular bus tour running in Cardiff. With the closure of the exhibition in the bay area the locations bus tour will be able to give fans of the Doctor a fun experience when they visit Cardiff. | Posted: 28 Feb 2011 06:39 PM PST Oh look! It's jolly old Matt Smith, and he seems to have gotten his facts wrong! The actor of the eleventh canonical interpretation of a certain eccentric and intriguing time traveller has recently made the news for calling said role "the greatest television part" in the United Kingdom of Great Britain (again), when in reality, being the Doctor is the greatest part in the world. No, scratch that – the galaxy. The universe. The multiverse. You get the drift. Speaking at the grand opening of the Doctor Who Experience exhibition in London two Sundays ago, Matt commented:
Matt also suggested that his future self will look back on his past self and remind himself that he used to play the Doctor. Who'd have thought? He also implied that his job lets him go to things and do things and have fun with things. So here's the thing… does Matt overuse "thing"?
Series 6 spoiler alert: the Doctor does things. A slightly-related side note – remember the Auton Doctor? Apparently Matt had his face covered in plaster for hours to make the dummy version of himself, breathing through straws conveniently shoved up his nose. Read all about it, as well as everything else we just talked about, at Contactmusic.com. | ||

| Posted: 28 Feb 2011 05:28 PM PST Website bleedingcool.com has found a screenshot for the mini Doctor Who episode planned for this Red Nose Day and it does not disappoint! Plans for the small screen adventure are not yet known at this point but the still taken from the episode sees two, that's two, Amy Ponds standing outside the TARDIS! Followers of current show runner Steven Moffat's work will remember that he not only wrote the hilarious Curse of the Fatal Death which featured an alternative Ninth Doctor rolling through his remaining regenerations but also the incredibly exciting and touching Time Crash, which featured not only the tenth doctor but also the fifth. This year looks set to be nothing less then what we're used to receiving from the "Moff" and in true wibbly wobbly-timey wimey fashion, it looks like he's going to deliver something fun, frantic and also rather memorable, What's particularly fun to note is that the TARDIS that the two Amy's are standing outside seems to be within a TARDIS itself. Are we set for another "Belgium" incident? Or are the stakes ranking even higher this year? You'll have to wait for Comic relief to air this year before finding out but knowing Moffat, it's going to be worth the wait! | ||

| Limited Edition Crack T-Shirt! Posted: 28 Feb 2011 08:10 AM PST Limited Edition is a badge of honour for any card carrying geek and a point of general confusion for the rest of the populace. Show someone your fancy new Malibu Stacey doll (with a new hat!) and they'll be impressed – tell them that it's limited edition and they'll give you a buoyant "oh" before moving ever so slowly away from you. But not with T-shirts- the more obscure the image/slogan the better. People can't get enough of staring at your now incredible rare get up- scanning their eyes across it for hidden clues that can spark a long dormant geek memory. Though the image has fairly obvious origins (he says with a nerdtacular grunt of scorn) Qwertee's fabulous and rare 'crack' design will give any geek the bragging rights in their respective post code. The shirt – available for only three days or until 11pm Wednesday 1st March – was designed by animator Billy Allison and features Amy and the Doctor peering through the crack in time. Unsurprisingly Allison came up with the idea while watching Doctor Who:

| Doctor Who Ratings souffrent d'une baisse Posted: 28 Feb 2011 04:11 AM PST We spoke too soon. Perhaps it was something we said as we held hands and danced merrily down the Rue Leonardo Da Vinci? Was it that we wanted to go to Euro Disney? Whatever we did during our little fling with the Doctor and his ratings Indian Summer in France appears to have ruined it for everyone. Were we too ostentatious? Rating for "Le Seigneur des Rêves" (Amy's Choice) and "La révolte des intra-terrestres 1/2″ (The Hungry Earth & Cold Blood) fell to just 295,000 viewers, which is only 1.3% of the total audience compared with last weeks 374,000 viewers or a 1.7% share. Unfortunately no comparison can be made with figures for Season 4 as they were not made available at the time. Here's hoping that we can sort our differences out, get back on the right track and get those French fans back to Doctor Who before the Jagaroth ruin it for everyone. Thanks again to Aurélie (who is a real-life French person!) | ||
