| France 4 trailer for Vincent et le Docteur, Le colocataire Posted: 02 Mar 2011 06:00 AM PST Vincent et le Docteur and Le colocataire will be airing on France 4 this weekend! Terror lurks in the cornfields of Provence in Vincent and the Doctor, but only a sad and lonely painter can see it, while, in The Lodger, the Doctor attempts to pass himself off as a perfectly normal human being to solve the mystery [...] | ||
| “Vincent et le Docteur” Posted: 02 Mar 2011 05:44 AM PST This week's Doctor Who fun on France 4 kicks off at 8.35 pm with "Vincent et le Docteur" – better known to the rest of us as the Nebula Award-nominated Vincent and the Doctor. Followed by "Le colocataire" (The Lodger) these episodes make up the two new episodes that are scheduled this weekend, with "Le Prisonnier Zéro" (The Eleventh Hour) returning for a repeat viewing at 10.05 pm. It isn't clear why the episode is being repeated rather than moving on past The Lodger into The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang; previous weeks have featured 3 episodes per night. However the smart Monet is on the very simple fact that with two episodes left, and a two-parter at that, France 4 are saving them for a season-concluding weekend of Doctor Who wonder next week. Enjoy the trailer ! (With thanks, as ever, to Aurélie Demonchaux!) | ||

Speaking to SFX, the showrunner confirmed that not one but two 4-minute mini-episodes will be airing during BBC One's telethon on Friday 18th March – one called 'Space' and the other called 'Time'! "Two episodes. Two mini-episodes. Very, very small episodes - maybe eight minutes in total, so [...]

| Posted: 02 Mar 2011 02:45 AM PST Keep bandaging your factory injuries, ladies and gentleman, but hold on tight to your worker's compensation; the Mill is up for sale! Though if you've been seriously hurt on the job by the machinery in this Mill, you must be using a particularly brutal computer. If you're new to Doctor Who or just have a difficult time remembering, the Mill has been responsible for all the computer-generated effects that have dazzled our eyes while watching the modern series since its premiere in 2005. They've also been behind Nike's World Cup ads in places where there's a need for massive amounts of real football, and twenty Super Bowl commercials in places where there's a need for massive amounts of porridge fake football. In 2000, the Mill even scored an Oscar for the visual effects in the Best-Picture-winning Gladiator. Of course, if you've been working for the Mill long enough to require workman's compensation, you probably already knew all that. American-based Carlyle Equity Partners has owned 60% of the Mill since 2007 and has been called the company responsible for hammering the For Sale sign onto the Mill's front lawn. A shortlist of at most seven bidders may include similar organizations such as Providence Equity Partners and Ascent. All parties are currently in the midst of management presentations (yawn), and the winning company may have to dig around in its pockets for £100 million. Carlyle initially purchased its share for £50 million, so it doesn't seem to be a bad deal, but what do we know? We're Doctor Who fans, not bankers (though if you're reading this and you are a banker, speak up in the comments and tell us if we're wronger than a Dalek in pantyhose)! Apparently Carlyle is trying to make this a quick process, so don't be surprised if the Mill has a new owner in six weeks' time. Now that we've bored you to death, how will this affect Doctor Who? We reckon it won't; considering Carlyle bought the Mill in 2007 after the new series already boasted a couple of seasons with top marks in ratings, and noting that they're still doing so now, we'll predict that the Mill will be visually affecting the best show ever for many years to come! In short, know what's going on but don't worry about it. To learn more, read this article at the Independent, written in fluent Business-ese. | ||

| Doctor Who meets Comic Relief in “Space” and “Time” (UPDATED) Posted: 02 Mar 2011 12:19 AM PST
The charity, co-founded in 1985 by "Vincent and the Doctor" scribe Richard Curtis, originally raised money for Ethiopian famine relief, but has since expanded to be a fund-raiser for many charitable causes in the UK, and Red Nose Day in particular has become a highlight of the British TV calendar as many popular actors and TV casts have provided special performances for the event. J.K. Rowling even wrote two spin-off books from her Harry Potter series in support 10 years ago. While Doctor Who has had a long history with the other big UK charity event, Children in Need, its relationship with Comic Relief has been less frequent. In 1999, Steven Moffat - at Curtis' invitation - wrote The Curse of Fatal Death, an all-star spoof of the show starring Rowan Atkinson as the Ninth Doctor. It was his first TV work for the franchise. In 2007, before she'd agreed to return as Donna Noble, Catherine Tate recorded a skit in which David Tennant spoofed the Doctor. In 2009, the cast of The Sarah Jane Adventures appeared with UK comic legend Ronnie Corbett in a mini-episode called "From Raxacoricofallapatorius With Love." And now, as confirmed by the BBC on Tuesday—and by Doctor Who Magazine in its latest issue coming out in the UK later this week (and in Canada in about a month)—Matt Smith, Arthur Darvill, and Karen Gillan will be appearing in a newly shot mini-episode airing in the UK on March 18. UPDATE: Steven Moffat tells SFX Magazine that there will in fact be two mini-episodes, running about 4 minutes each, entitled "Space" and "Time", and that the two will be canonical stories, rather than spoofs or send-ups (in other words, like the previous Children in Need mini stories. (PS. The link reveals a spoiler picture that's bound to have Karen Gillan fans cheering.) That's the good news. The bad news, of course, is that we won't be seeing this mini-episode on TV in Canada, since Red Nose Day is a strictly UK event. However, BBC Video has been great about releasing past mini-episodes—the Sarah Jane skit was released on the SJA Season 2 DVD as an Easter Egg, and Curse of Fatal Death even got its own North American VHS release (though a DVD release has yet to occur). Odds are the newest skit will find its way onto the Season 6 DVD set. (Update: with Moffat quoted as saying the two skits are "taken seriously as a proper bit of Doctor Who", future DVD/BD release is probably a given.) | Posted: 02 Mar 2011 12:04 AM PST Well, the Cardiff Expo was a pretty cool try for a first event, with over 750 people paying their £5 to come along. With only a few guests and being a one day convention, though, the bar life in the evening was a bit sparse. Still, I got to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. I spent a panel trying to tell Jimmy Broxton that he's quite good, actually, him being the most self-effacing artist in the world, and I was also on the Secrets and Lies quiz show: Hosted by the Sidekickcast. You can see the rest of the quiz on their website. The highlight is that, me having been accidentally asked questions about myself, the same happened to Charlie Adlard, only... he didn't get his correct! Also, the lovely David Finch cover for Action Comics #899 has been released. You can see a large version of it here. I've just had delivered (way before its release date of March 30th) a consignment of the first hardcover collection of my Action Comics run (covering #890-895). If you're intending to order one, please note that the title is Superman: The Black Ring. Lex would be annoyed. Until next time, Cheerio!

Which is why it's very nice that the lovely people at Forbidden Planet have decided to sell some exquisite models of the Doctor, Davros and the Daleks from that particular story. Available for pre order now is a wonderful figurine set to make your collection glow. It features not only the Sixth Doctor is his blue over garment (perfect for mourning on Necros) but also a handily challenged Davros and a Renegade and Imperial Dalek. This is surely another brilliant addition that no collector would want to be without and would sit comfortably amongst other Dalek sets. Available for delivery from 5th April 2011, this set is available for purchase at only £34.99. Now, however you look at it, that's a really good deal. There are many reasons to pick this particular collection up-nostalgia, respect or even admiration but the main reason has got to be that it looks just too good to say no to! You can visit www.forbiddenplanet.com now to be one of the first to pre order your set, don't delay!

| Stranded TARDIS Materialises at Castle Posted: 01 Mar 2011 07:20 PM PST That's the problem with owning an unreliable Type 40 TARDIS – one moment you're on your merry way to the Pau Grand Prix in 1901 and then the next, you've landed outside some castle with the head of the attraction telling what an honour its been to have you their for the half term week…shesh! One such TARDIS was spotted in the Fountain Courtyard at Raglan Castle, South Wales. Obviously the directors in charge had to quickly bungle together a story about both BBC Cymru Wales and Cadw-the Welsh Assembly's celebrating the use of historic and unusual locations during filming by putting it on show for visitors. Pah, pull the other one, next they'll be telling everyone it'll be a big hit with fans. Jayne Rowlands, Cadw's head of presentation, said:
Those poor fans flocking to see what is ostensibly a faulty Nissan Micra really couldn't get enough of its presence. Custodian Jill Cale said:
So the next time you see a TARDIS at a well known landmark don't flock to gaup at it; get a Haynes manual, offer the driver a warm mug of Horlicks and wish him a fond farewell when the intergalactic AA turn up. The TARDIS may have gone but Raglan Castle is open daily between 10am and 4pm. Entry costs £3.10 adults and children/senior citizens £2.70 or £8.90 for a family. (via South Wales Argus)
