| The Reign of Terror, Vengeance on Varos added to DVD release schedule Posted: 03 Mar 2011 10:06 AM PST Two new titles have been announced by 2|Entertain for the Doctor Who DVD schedule. This afternoon saw the company reveal that First Doctor story The Reign of Terror would be released sometime next year. This will be the first incomplete story to be released on DVD since The Invasion back in 2006, with episodes four and five still missing from the BBC Archive. It is currently unclear whether this story would receive the same CGI animation reconstruction for the missing episodes like the Troughton tale, a telesnap reconstruction like the VHS release of The Tenth Planet back in 2000, or some other form, with the company merely stating via their @ClassicDW Twitter feed that: .. REIGN OF TERROR! To be released as complete as can realistically be achieved. Likely late 2012. During this evening DrWho Online revealed that the other release to the schedule is the Sixth Doctor adventure Vengeance on Varos, which forms part of the Revisitations strand of previous DVDs receiving a makeover and new lease of life. The announcement of the story follows on from 2|Entertain canvassing for opinion on a potential release when DVD schedules were published by Doctor Who Magazine in January. | ||

| Posted: 03 Mar 2011 08:35 AM PST In what will surely become know as a Julian Assange-sized exclusive those intrepid journalists at AOL Television have managed to track down elusive hate magnet/adequate Doctor Who guest star James Corden for a syllable or two about his return to the show. In a sting operation clearly weeks in the making, AOL.TV's top reporters managed to corner James Corden on the set of A League of their Own (which he presents) and, disguising their attempt to get an exclusive as a timetabled "meet the press interview" ahead of the return of the quiz show where laughs go to die, managed to probe the very depths of Corden's psyche. Corden, who played "pizza, booze, telly" enthusiast Craig Owens in last season's The Lodger finally cracked after an exhustive 10 minutes of questioning and revealed:
Cast your eyes away! Its like peering into a broken mans soul! On the ropes, Corden added:
I know what you're thinking. It's like seeing the episode laid out before our eyes. The techniques used by these crack reporters will surely be taken to the grave with them. In one last final flurry of interrogation about his characters presence on board the TARDIS next season, Corden broke down, dropping to his knees in a flood of tears and cried:
Ladies and Gentlemen, this year's Pulitzer will be spelt "A.O.L." (via AOL.TV)

| Posted: 03 Mar 2011 07:58 AM PST Doctor Who Executive Steven "The Grand Moff" Moffat has decided that for Comic Relief we're going to see Amy Pond flirt with herself. Steady on! Type PHWOARTY and all that aside, Moffat's interview with the SFX website reveals that there are two episodes on the Comic Relief: Funny For Money telethon on Red Nose Day (March 18th).
When challenged, Moffat admitted that Amy-on-Amy action wasn't just his personal fantasy – but everybody's! (GET OUT OF MY HEAD, MOFFAT!).
Featuring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill – not to mention a TARDIS inside the TARDIS – the "proper bit of Doctor Who" is likely to cause fans to have a bit of a pre-Series 6 fangasm when the short episodes air in two weeks time…

| Posted: 03 Mar 2011 05:44 AM PST You may not know the name, but Sean Carlsen has been a regular across the Whoniverse for most of the past decade, appearing in such gems as Torchwood series 2 episode Sleeper (by James Moran) and the Gallifrey series for Big Finish, not to mention a handful of other audio titles. Sean also played a policeman in David Tennant's first full episode as the Tenth Doctor, The Christmas Invasion, in 2005. However this wasn't the first time that the two had met each other; when we spoke, Sean recalled encountering David at an event. "What a nice guy! We sat and chatted for a while, and all the time I thought `have I met him before?`… it wasn't until I was on the train home when I realised I'd seen him in [pre-Doctor Who BBC drama in which Tennant starred] Blackpool!" Besides these on-screen appearances, however, Sean has played a key part in a couple of Big Finish's spin-off series over the past few years – every Doctor Who fan's dream! Spotted on stage by (Big Finish head honcho) Jason Haigh-Ellery, Sean was given a couple of CDs ("I remember one was Sword of Orion and the other was the first Charley Pollard one, Storm Warning, about the R101 disaster. I thought they were cracking!") and invited to send in a showreel. Unfortunately, however, Sean was overlooked for some time, mainly thanks to his material being misplaced and remaining unrecovered until Big Finish moved offices. It wasn't long before then-producer Gary Russell was in touch, offering Sean a role in 2004's The Natural History of Fear alongside Paul McGann and India Fisher. It turns out following further discussion that as Doctor Who fan himself ("I used to buy DWM in the 1990s") Sean was a big fan of the Eighth Doctor. "I really love Paul McGann's Doctor. I think the TV Movie was much maligned, it had a lot going for it… the script wasn't the strongest but everything else like the design and the feel of it and the Doctor above all else was great, I loved his Doctor!"
Thankfully, Sean was already in mind for something else… "We were in the pub afterward, me, India, Gary Russell and Conrad [Westmaas, audio companion C'rizz] and India turned to Gary and said `Sean was really good you could use him again!` And Gary uttered in his inimitable manner `hmmm` and I thought that was that!" Yet a few months later Gary Russell called Sean offering him a part in a new serial – picking it up at his local post office, Sean couldn't believe it: "I didn't realise it was the entire series he had offered me!" In his hands were four scripts for the first series, and it seems Gary Russell had omitted to mention that he was offering Sean a regular role in an audio series with some of his childhood heroes – Lalla Ward, Louise Jameson and Mary Tamm – not to mention John Leeson! "I couldn't believe it – here I am working with these guys! "I just felt very fortunate and privileged and I still feel that and appreciate Big Finish and Gary using me. It's a job I love doing, I'm working with people I grew up watching and respect, and in that respect Gallifrey was just terrific!" Playing the shady yet admirable Coordinator Narvin, Sean has become a staple ingredient of the sprawling political machinations of Gallifrey, challenging Romana, sending Leela on errands and generally making his presence felt. A new fourth series of Gallifrey is released in March 2011, five years after the third. So why the wait?
"I was at the Regenerations convention at Swansea last year and Gary came up and said `I might have some work for you` and I said `Oh what's that?` and he said: `a fourth series of Gallifrey!`" Recorded in September and November 2010, the series features episodes from David Wyse "a big Doctor Who fan" and Gary Hopkins, as well as a script co-written by Gary Russell and Scott Handcock. Interestingly, Gary Hopkins has also previously contributed an episode of I, Davros, another Big Finish series in which Sean has appeared. It's interesting that Sean Carlsen has appeared in some of the more politically-toned Big Finish productions rather than the standard Doctor Who action adventure releases. "Yeah, I only just realised this recently myself! Obviously Gallifrey is political and I know The West Wing was a big influence on it and obviously I, Davros is quite a political story in its own way as well, and The Natural History of Fear is very Orwellian and has shades of 1984. "I'm just happy to do anything Big Finish put my way, but certainly with Gallifrey I absolutely love doing and from time to time I've been lucky enough to do a Doctor Who from time to time, such as the one with Paul, and I've done one with peter and just recently we had the Sixth Doctor in Gallifrey so that just leaves Sylvester doesn't it?! "And Tom Baker of course!" Available this month from Big Finish, Gallifrey Season 4 can be purchased on CD or MP3 from www.bigfinish.com/Gallifrey-Season-4. (Many thanks to Sean Carlsen and David Richardson for their help with the interview.)
| Posted: 03 Mar 2011 05:00 AM PST Next time you're in New York, be sure to check out The Way Station steampunk bar if you have the need to relieve your bladder. Sure, most loyal citizens of the world tend to go to bars, pubs, and/or daycare centers to consume liquor, but at The Way Station you'll probably be more keen on getting it out of your system as quickly as possible. Why? Just look. Look at the picture. See that? That there TARDIS? Know what that TARDIS is besides a time-and-space machine? A loo. Forever have worldwide suspicions of the Doctor's vehicle being nothing more than a glorified port-a-john have now been confirmed. Like we just said, The Way Station is a steampunk bar. Admittedly, some people have mixed feelings about steampunk culture, so if you're in any way intimidated whenever someone enters the room sporting a 19th century Victorian top hat and a 51st century sonic cravat, there's nothing to be ashamed of. But there's no denying that if you're a Doctor Who fan at all (and if you're reading this article, then you are), with the series' constant travels through and mixing-up of time, you're guaranteed to have at least some appreciation for the movement. For examples of steampunkesque stories in Doctor Who's recent history, re-watch The Next Doctor and A Christmas Carol. The best part about this TARDIS lavatory, according to Way Station owner Andy Heidel?
There you have it! Plenty of room to… manipulate the vortex. If you happen to be in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, check out The Way Station at 683 Washington Avenue in Prospect Heights. (via Inside Pulse and Geeks of Doom)
| The Demons of Red Lodge and Other Stories Posted: 03 Mar 2011 04:21 AM PST As a special treat, we're given not one but four separate Fifth Doctor and Nyssa adventures from Big Finish in a one off release called The Demons of Red Lodge and Other Stories. Big Finish has released tales in such a format before, namely 100 and Circular Time where separate stories make part of a bigger tale. Where The Demons of Red Lodge and Other Stories (or TDoRLaOS as we'll refer to it from now on, thank you) follows this style, not all the stories are necessarily easy listening. That's not to say that any of them are bad, far from it. Each tale is well written, acted and directed with a different style and format for each episode. But where two of the tales stand out of the crowd, the other two slightly fall behind due to their own structure. The Demons of Red Lodge by Jason Arnopp is easily the best of the bunch. When the Doctor and Nyssa awaken to find themselves trapped in a very small space and panicking, you're instantly tense and wary for the two leads. As they walk through dark and deserted woods, scared, alone and being followed, you could break the tension with a knife. It's genuinely creepy stuff reminiscent of the 1999 horror film The Blair Witch Project, especially if you listen with the lights turned off. As the story unfolds, it's not only clever and well written but also quite sad in parts. Reminiscent of the Third Doctor story The Daemons, this little tale keeps your toes curled with tension the whole way through. The Entropy Composition is a well written tale and is a strong beginning for newcomer Rick Briggs (no relation) who won the Big Finish New Writers competition last year to get a place on this chronical of adventures. The Doctor and Nyssa to battle with a creature from beyond the dawn of time who has deadly control over sound. It's a breathless action piece and one that, although keeping the listener engaged, feels like a script that was written more for television then audio. The epic finale is ever so slightly hard to visualise in one's head but that's just plain old nitpicking, this story is amusing and enthralling at the same time. Doing Time by William Gallagher finds the Doctor on the planet Folly doing a "one stretch" for all the wrong reasons. This is the lighter of the four offerings and offers some truly laugh out loud moments (wait until you hear about the Doctor's beard) as well as some tender sections as well. The direction and pacing of this particular story is very well done and the last ten minutes of frantic storytelling play out well. Special Features by John Dorney is a very interesting take on the audio format for Doctor Who as it finds the Fifth Doctor recording a DVD commentary with the cast and crew of a film called Doctor Demonic's Tales of Terror. The Doctor has to weed out an uninvited guest who was present at the filming and may just be at the recording of the commentary as well. Whilst it's a great idea, Special Features falls down ever so slightly as the first 15 minutes really do feel like a run of the mill DVD commentary. No one person is particularly engaging or interesting. Whilst the story has been written that way intentionally (and it is very accurate) it does tend to let down the first half. Once the action kicks in however, it's all hands on deck and the story blooms into something special. Overall, TDoRLaOS is a solid offering from Big Finish. The variation of the tales means that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Download this now to see just how different the Doctor's life can be at any moment in time and space! You can buy The Demons of Red Lodge and Other Stories on CD or via download now from www.bigfinish.com | ||

What's unique about this release is that the story has two episodes missing from the archive (episodes 4 and 5). And, as a fan of this story I would point out these are rather important episodes too, that change the plot from meanderings in revolutionary France to something more serious. 2Entertain has said the story is "to be released as complete as can realistically be achieved." Which means, to my mind, 3 potential options 1. Animation, as they did with The Invasion in 2006. The problem is that was prohibitively expensive (the only reason it was done for that story was it was paid for by the BBC website for an unrelated aborted project). Costs may have come down in the intervening five years and there may be some fan out there willing to do high-quality flash animation on the cheap. We remain dubious, but this would be the preferred option short of finding the actual episodes. 2. Telesnap reconstruction. That's where they take telesnaps, pictures taken by photographer John Cura of the show when broadcast in 1964 (Cura did this as a service for actors, directors and producers in order for them to retain a record of the program as broadcast in the days before VCRs), and marry it up with the off-air recordings of the broadcast episodes made by fans in the 1960s. It's been known that 2Entertain are not fond of these and for good reason: they can be very, very boring, though hardcore fans like them. 3. Some sort of tightened version of a telesnap reconstruction with bridging material. Basically, what they did on the 2003 VHS release, which used Carole Ann Ford's bridging narration for an abortive 1990s video release and combined it with telesnaps, 8mm footage of broadcast sequences and off-air recording clips. It wasn't bad, though the impact of what takes place in these pivotal episodes were somewhat lost. It's hard to say what they'll do but as they're not releasing it til late 2012 they have some time to figure out their options. One thing that's interesting about this news is that up until now, 2Entertain has been unwilling to countenance releasing any incomplete stories on DVD. In fact we had been told by the Restoration Team's Steve Roberts at a DWIN event in 2009 that those incomplete stories (which include The Reign of Terror, The Tenth Planet and The Ice Warriors) weren't even on the DVD production schedule. Clearly, as they get closer to completing releasing every Doctor Who story on DVD they're rethinking this policy.

| Posted: 03 Mar 2011 12:05 AM PST As part of comic relief this year, David Walliams will be hosting an event called 24 Hour Panel People, in which various celebrities will take on roles of hosts, panellists and team captains whilst taking part in a nod to various classic game shows. The celebrities in question are also notable for their appearances in Doctor Who including Stephen Fry (Death Comes to Time), Barbara Windsor (Army of Ghosts), Paul O'Grady (The Stolen Earth), Russell Tovey (Voyage of the Damned, The End of Time) and David Tennant (do we really need to list his episodes?). Walliams has recently been confirmed to guest star in an episode of Doctor Who's 2011 series. The show will air on March 5th and will stream online. It will then be re-run as five thirty minute highlighted programmes on BBC Three on the run up to Red Nose Day. Other celebs of note that will be taking part in the fun include David Mitchell (Peep Show), Vernon Kay, Sir David Frost, Christopher Biggins, Jack Dee and Dara O' Brian. Some of the shows that will be "sent up" include Through the Keyhole, Mock the Week, Room 101 and QI whilst other classics will be making an appearance including The Generation Game and Blankety Blank. 24 Hour Panel People will be screened on 5th March from midday. Also watch out on Red Nose Day for a specially written mini episode of Doctor Who featuring not one but two Amy Ponds. | ||

Appearing will be mastermind Gerry Anderson, responsible for such shows as Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet. But that's not why you'd really want to go; the real reason is that there's going to be a host of Doctor Who goodies for you to drool over on the two days. For the launch of their new book VFX regarding the BBC Visual Effects department, Mat Irvine and Mike Tucker will be appearing at the event to talk about their work for television shows such as Red Dwarf and none other than Doctor Who! An array of props and costumes will be on display but don't try going near any, they'll be closely guarded by an army of Daleks! You needn't worry too much about the Daleks however, as appearing alongside writer James Moran (2008's The Fires of Pompeii), who will be talking about writing science fiction, will be none other than K-9 himself! More guests are yet to be announced but if you're a Doctor Who fan then surely that's more than you need to go along! You can find out more about the event by visiting www.spacecentre.co.uk.

| Posted: 02 Mar 2011 09:59 PM PST Big Finish are moving up in the world of media, transitioning from the audio world to a visual one as they co-produce a new short film called Cleaning Up. Written by Simon Guerrier and directed by Thomas Guerrier, the plot follows hitman Mr Jackson played by Doctor Who's very own Mark Gatiss. Joining Mark is an impressive cast list including Big Finish Executive Producer and voice of the Daleks Nicholas Briggs and Tracy-Ann Oberman, best known to fans as Yvonne Hartman in the 2006 adventure Army of Ghosts/Doomsday. Simon's work will be familiar with Doctor Who fans as he's been involved in writing spin off media for quite some time now. As well as writing for Big Finish's Doctor Who audio range and Companion Chronicles range he has also edited many Short Trips novels, written a few BBC Doctor Who books as well as lending a hand to the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip as well! Big Finish CEO Jason Haigh-Ellery remarked:
The script itself will be edited by none other than Joseph Lidster, another Big Finish stalwart. Cleaning up will start its run by being shown at film festivals before being given a wider release. Keep an eye out for the trailer at www.bigfinish.com

| International iPlayer less than $10 per month Posted: 02 Mar 2011 06:19 PM PST BBC Director General, Mark Thompson has given more details on the international version of the BBC iPlayer, first reported in August. In a speech to the Financial Times Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference 2011, Thompson confirmed the iPlayer app will launch later this year and said the price will be under $10 per month. The app will give international users the chance to see BBC programmes, such as Doctor Who and Torchwood, shortly after their broadcast in the UK and without the 'shows being rebranded or reformatted.' Thompson paid tribute to the domestic success of the iPlayer, saying in January 162m programmes, an average of six per household, were downloaded via the iPlayer in the UK. Matt Smith's debut story, The Eleventh Hour, still remains the most downloaded programme ever. | ||

Two new titles have been announced by 2|Entertain for the Doctor Who DVD schedule.

"If that had been my only association with Doctor Who I could have died happy having it on my CV – that would have been great. To work with Paul McGann was great – he was a really nice guy… we had a break during recording and we were talking about plays and I mentioned a play about the First World War and it's a subject that I'm passionate about and he's very knowledgable about, and he suddenly came alive. Of course he was in (classic BBC serial from 1986) The Monocled Mutineer which was something I watched as a boy and I had to pinch myself: here I was in a studio with the guy!"
"As you know, season three ended on a controversial cliffhanger – a lot of fans said `you can't leave it there!` But it was never Gary's intention to leave it there – he intended to do another series but the more busy he was with BBC Wales and Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures and so on, the less likely it seemed it would happen."
