The Adventure Games: More Overseas Outlets?

Posted: 04 Mar 2011 10:26 PM PST

In a recent interview with Big Download, BBC Worldwide's Executive Vice President of Digital Entertainment Robert Kashak revealed that Doctor Who: The Adventure Games is set to be released in other overseas territories.

The games – which kicked off last year with City of the Daleks and regularly featured Nick Briggs, Barnaby Edwards and Sarah Douglas alongside stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan – were developed by SUMO Digital and made available via the BBC Doctor Who site in the UK and Direct2Drive.com worldwide.

When quizzed on the success of the titles overseas, Kashak revealed:

We don't release sales numbers, but I will tell you that we're bringing the game to multiple distribution partners in the coming months to ensure every single fan outside the UK can play the game.

Interesting stuff – of which you'll find more of in the full interview over at Big Download.

BBC Worldwide talk MMO

Posted: 04 Mar 2011 08:27 PM PST

Robert Nashak is the Executive Vice President of Digital Entertainment at BBC Worldwide and he spoke to gaming website Big Download recently about the upcoming Doctor Who MMO, Worlds in Time.

It's a curious set of answers that takes in Doctor Who: The Adventure Games and Torchwood (tune in later for more on these) but also seems steeped in press-speak. For instance we find it incredulous that Three Rings were genuinely "the only choice" and that BBC Worldwide "never really considered anyone else" – Three Rings have made some good games but none of them have ever set the world alight. BigPoint, for one, would have been a more sensible choice.

If you're looking for hints about how the game will play, whether Steven Moffat will be involved or if current star Matt Smith or any of his predecessors will be appearing, then prepare for a mix of disappointment and excitement, with a bit of "innovative gameplay" thrown in – hopefully not the sort of innovative gameplay that made Doctor Who: The Adventure Games so easy for 6 year olds.

BBC Worldwide's Robert Nashak is only prepared to talk about the game as a social experience, it seems…

As an online social game, Doctor Who: Worlds in Time has social gameplay at its core. The game will not only foster collaboration and cooperation inside the game, but integrate with social platforms. We can't reveal too much right now about how these mechanics will unfold.

So what he is saying there, people, is that it will be an MMO. Move along, nothing new to report here…

Head on over to bigdownload.com to read the full interview…

Torchwood “feels American”

Posted: 04 Mar 2011 07:29 PM PST

Torchwood has changed. Since its inception and first broadcast nearly five years ago (time does fly by does it not?) the show has become a different beast altogether. And that's something that one of the writers has noticed as well.

John Fay, who wrote two episodes of Torchwood: Children of Earth and, more recently, has written episode nine of Torchwood: Miracle Day, recently remarked that the show now has much more of an "American" feel to it. A large American cast and some filming in the country are large factors in this. Torchwood was always a show that appeared to big for its boots, so a bit of an American feel might not necessarily be a bad thing; it may actually give it a grander and more epic feel.

Having recently sat down with the other writers, Fay did find things slightly daunting at first:

"The other writers in the room were phenomenal… We got on great, I think."

Those who are hoping that Fay's writing style has mellowed over the last couple of years may not be too pleased as he commented on the death of poor Ianto Jones:

"When death is a reality in a drama, the jeopardy is greater [and] the stakes are greater."

So it looks like not only will we be getting a far more stateside view on science fiction (any money elements of Miracle Day will mirror 24 and other successful shows) but lots of gruesome deaths along the way!

Torchwood: Miracle Day will be airing this year on the BBC in the UK and on the Starz  channel in the US.

That Tweeting James Corden…

Posted: 04 Mar 2011 06:23 PM PST

So, Doctor Who is well underway with the filming of its sixth series and rather than bring you the regular "there's been a casting announcement" update, we thought we'd let you know in a slightly more fun way that James Corden has updated his Twitter feed and it looks like he's now filming with the Doctor Who team!

Corden played loveable Craig Owens in last year's absolutely brilliant and somewhat hilarious episode The Lodger and it looks like he's playing the character once again.

Whilst Corden may have become ever so slightly insufferable for a time, the role he played last year made up for it to some (yes, I am referring to myself) so it will be nice to see him back for a return appearance. That is if it is that straightforward. Readers with sharp minds may remember that Jessica Stevens (nee Hynes) played a character Joan Redfern  in 2007's Human Nature/ The Family of Blood and then later played her descendent Verity Newman in 2010's The End of Time Part Two so there's always a chance that Cordon could be playing someone else entrily.

For those interested, his Twitter feed read:

"Finished League of their own last night. Now i'm in Cardiff for the first day on Dr Who.We're filming all night till 8am!!! X"

Nothing too cryptic but surly it must fit in with the return of the amateur TARDIS that was ablove his flat that keen viewers glimpsed once again in the trailer for the new series.

Looks like we will have to wait and see how this one plays out…
