One-time Doctor Who scriptwriter who is now riding high in the UK comics industry Paul Cornell is nominated for an Eagle Award this year, and you have a few days left still to vote!

Beyond countless novels, Ninth Doctor classic Father's Day (2005) and Tenth Doctor classic Human Nature/The Family of Blood, the genial Paul Cornell (always a guaranteed chat at conventions and events!) has been working on a range of comic book titles over the past few years, most notably Captain Britain and MI: 13, Knight and Squire, Batman & Robin and is also the current ongoing writer of Action Comics.

Now we wouldn't want you heading over to the Eagle Awards website – the home of the UK's biggest comic strip/book awards which has been running since 1977 – just to vote for Paul because he brought us some cracking Doctor Who episodes.

But if you admire Paul's work and have enjoyed any of his comics in the last 12 months – and there must be a lot of you – then hot-foot it over to the Eagle Awards website today and cast your vote!

Doctor Who France: Slight Increase

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 07:32 AM PST

Following the last few weeks of disappointing broadcast figures for the weekly multi-episode broadcasts of Doctor Who on France 4 over the channel, a slight increase in the audience has been recorded.

Last night, "Vincent et le Docteur" and "Le colocataire" (Vincent and the Doctor and The Lodger to non-Francophiles) were viewed by 303,000 people; that's around 1.4% of the total audience. The two episodes were ably assisted by a repeat of The Eleventh Hour later on in the evening, and this slightly stronger showing sees Doctor Who gaining around 8000 viewers on the previous week (comparison of figures with previous weeks).

Sadly that isn't a great figure (8000) but a general overview of French TV audiences on Saturday reveals that no channel gets beyond 5 million and Doctor Who is France 4′s biggest draw.

(Many thanks as ever to French Doctor Who superfan Aurélie!)

Lynda Baron returns to Doctor Who?

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 07:11 AM PST

The Wales on Sunday have reported an actress previously appearing in Doctor Who in the 1980s will be returning to the show, during a summary of cast seen filming last week alongside James Corden in the episode currently being shot by Steve Hughes:
Corden was joined on set in Cardiff by well-known British actress Lynda Baron, Karen Gillan, who plays assistant Amy Pond, and Arthur Darvill, who plays Rory Williams, plus two bus loads of shoppers and a baby.
Lynda Baron appeared in the Fifth Doctor story Enlightenment (1983) playing Captain Wrack, and also sang "The Ballad of the O.K. Corral" that featured throughout the First Doctor story The Gunfighters (1966). Outside of Doctor Who she is probably best remembered as nurse Gladys Emmanuel in the Ronnie Barker sitcom Open All Hours.

No official confirmation of Baron's casting has been made at present.

Ultimate Regeneration – Have You Got Yours?

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 06:30 AM PST

We're delighted to announce that copies of Ultimate Regeneration started shipping on Friday, so if you haven't got yours yet look out for it over the next few days as your local postal delivery agent should be dropping it off for you!

I'm not sure if "delighted" covers it, to be honest; this has been a long-term project, one that kicked off in late 2009 and has been through considerable development and editing. We've been through three covers, two interior layouts and various discussions on how exactly we can deliver the best quality book.

As such, "humongously thrilled" is probably closer to the truth!

We believe we have done now that – Ultimate Regeneration features contributions from Anthony Dry, Brian A Terranova, Simon Mills, Thomas Willam Spychalski, Gareth Kavanagh and others, and features essays, articles, reviews and interviews covering 5 years of Kasterborous.com. Some of these you will have seen before, while others are new.

Here's a new snippet:

…episodes of Doctor Who since 2005 had relied on some of the highlights of the various spin-off media, notably Dalek and its similarities with the Sixth Doctor adventure Jubilee from Big Finish (both were written by Rob Shearman) and 2006's Rise of the Cybermen, which owed a little to Marc Platt's Spare Parts, again a Big Finish production, this time featuring the Fifth Doctor.

While the events of these adventures could conceivably occur to the same chap – particularly one who has lived for many, many years, there remains the question of Human Nature

With the pre-order copies finally being dispatched we can now announce that the book is now available to buy right here on Kasterborous for £14.99 in the UK (with and additional £2.99 p+p) and $25 (plus $6.99 p+p) for overseas buyers.

With a little over 100 pre-order copies dispatched, you can purchase your copy now and purchase a book that charts the Russell T Davies era of Doctor Who all beautifully bound by a quality cover from Anthony Dry, whose work you might recognise from Doctor Who Magazine, the various Doctor Who DVD boxsets and this very website.

We also intend to have Ultimate Regeneration available to buy direct from Amazon in the near future – stay tuned for details on this!

*Anyone who would like to purchase Ultimate Regeneration but doesn't want to pay by PayPal should contact me directly at christian@kasterborous.com where we can discuss alternative payment options.

Torchwood Game on the Cards

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 02:39 AM PST

Ready for a digital Captain Jack Harkness? Hidden away in an interview about the upcoming Doctor Who MMO game World's in Time from Three Rings comes the sort of denial that says "yes, we're developing a Torchwood game".

Robert Nashak is Executive VP of Digital Entertainment at BBC Worldwide andit was his very lips that uttered (or perhaps fingers that typed; or his PA's fingers…) the following words when asked about a Torchwood video game:

I can only say that it is always our goal at BBC Worldwide to do as much possible to extend the experience for our viewers wherever it makes sense. TORCHWOOD: MIRACLE DAY is going to blow everyone's minds. That much I can say for now.

It's one of those non-denials that say "we're developing something, it's sensitive" and given the number of fingers in the Torchwood pie – BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide, Starz – this should come as no surprise.

The question is, what sort of game is coming? Torchwood is one game that gives the player the chance to run around shooting things, something that a Doctor Who or Sarah Jane title just couldn't. Throw in Captain Jack Harkness' indestructible nature, there is no reason why BBC Worldwide shouldn't be thinking bigger than some of their other recent partners and going hell for leather with an out and out shooter such in the Half Life 2 mold, or even Duke Nukem…

…yeah, an omnisexual but slightly less violent take on Duke Nukem. That sums up Captain Jack Harkness pretty much…

Review: The Feast of Axos - CD

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 02:14 AM PST

Manufacturer: Big Finish Productions

Written By: Mike Maddox

RRP: &ound;14.99

Release Date: 28th February 2011

Reviewed by: Matthew Davis for Doctor Who Online

Review Posted: 6th March 2011

Bringing back an old foe in Doctor Who is always risky, especially if that villain is as iconic as Axos. With characters like this, simply rehashing old storylines is an easy trap to fall into and one that this adventure seems at times perilously close to.

The sentient parasite is brought back in the latest Sixth Doctor audio and one of the most exciting things about this release is the return of Bernard Holley to the role of Axos, 40 years after playing the role in The Claws of Axos.

The story picks up immediately after the cliff-hanger from The Crimes of Thomas Brewster, where Brewster has hijacked the TARDIS demanding the Doctor take him back to his own time. Of course things don’t go according to plan when they land in the time loop where The Doctor originally trapped Axos many ages ago. Inside the parasite they find a group of astronauts working for Space Tourism billionaire Campbell Irons, intending to revive Axos and use its energy to solve the world’s energy crisis. But of course the newly awakened Axos has other ideas.

What follows is, to put it simply, a slight inversion of The Claws of Axos.

In that story, Axos intended to feed off of Earth’s energy and now the Earth intends to return the favour. Despite an interesting current event twist, it becomes somewhat lost as Axos’ intentions are essentially the same as before though I suppose one can’t ask much more of a space parasite with a large appetite.

What seems to be the focus here are the characters, with the focus shifted onto Brewster yet it all seems a bit of a retread. At end of the previous audio there was potential for a sparky team relationship with The Doctor, Evelyn and Brewster however once again the characters are separated, leaving Brewster to get up to his old tricks. The potential for these characters with such differing personalities working together more is tantalising but to have them separated yet again is somewhat of a let down.

In The Crimes of Thomas Brewster, Thomas was in cahoots with a sentient planet to try and save it from destruction by emulating the heroic nature of the Doctor. Now Brewster, angry and hurt turns his services over to a sentient parasite to punish the Doctor but of course with his own gains in mind. For once I’d like to see Brewster in a non-scheming mode. I know it is a driving force of his character, but it is becoming a little tiresome.

The supporting characters, although serving their parts well, tend to get lost in much of the noise and Campbell Irons, a potentially great villain, seems in the end to be a bit wasted.

Despite this, there are some lovely moments with the Doctor and Evelyn and a rather distressing cliff-hanger to Episode Three however the stand out of this audio is Bernard Holley. Sounding every bit like he did in 1971, his rich voice really serves well on audio and the impact of Axos, a very strong visual presence in the original television serial, loses none of its impact here, although the same cannot be said of the Axonites. He is so good that he almost dominates the whole adventure.

Despite some flaws there is a lot to like in The Feast of Axos, but like Axos himself, you end up wanting a little bit more.

Docteur Who: ratings update

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 11:05 PM PST

The penultimate week of Doctor Who on France 4 saw Vincent et le Docteur and Le colocataire watched by 303,000 viewers, an improvement on last week and achieving a share of 1.4% of the total audience.

Danse avec les stars topped the ratings as always on TF1, though lost half a million viewers in total (4.80m, 23.6% share), probably to the successful Le plus grand cabaret du monde on France 2 (4.48m, 21%). A full breakdown can be found at Premiere.

Next week sees the finale of Series Five:

Tom Baker Interview Archive

Posted: 05 Mar 2011 08:00 PM PST

Been to Tom Baker's website lately?

If you have, perhaps you already know about the online time capsule of his brilliant Doctor Who Magazine interviews.  The incredible archive spans across five conversations, nine issues, and 25 years (1984-2009).

Whether you're an avid DWM junkie and have already read them all or an angered DWM hater and haven't read a word, it's worth taking a day (that's how long it took me, but I'm a rather slow reader) or so to catch a rare glimpse into the personality of one of the most popular Doctors of all time, that perhaps you can't find anywhere else unless you meet the man in person or read Who On Earth Is Tom Baker?, his autobiography.

As you read, you may encounter a few interesting similarities and differences in Baker's responses to the same questions in different settings.  For example, in 1984, three years after his final appearance as the incumbent Doctor in Logopolis, he seemed to share the modern views of Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and Matt Smith in that he wasn't in any way afraid of being typecast post-Who, but more than a decade later as he looked back on his career, he admitted that typecasting was, in his mind, exactly what had happened to him.

Keep an additional eye out for Tom's repeated comparisons of devout believers in Doctor Who and Star Trek to die-hard religion fans, his believable assertion that he was doing less planning of his Doctor's behavior and more reacting to the scripts put in front of him, and several very similar accounts of how the Amazing Technicolor Dream Scarf came into existence.  It's also fascinating to listen to each interviewer's own impression of Mr. Baker; almost all of seem to support the point-of-view that he's one of the most unusual and remarkable people one could ever meet.

Once you've read or re-read the interviews, feel free to leave a comment on this article telling me what you think; I'm dying to discuss this with someone!

And in case you haven't already done so, be sure to check out our own short-but-sweet chat with the legend himself from 2009.

If you're a Who newbie and you're still learning your Doctors, Tom Baker is the fourth one (not Peter Davison, as Craig Ferguson seemed to believe).
