BBC America announce Series Six launch date in USA as 23rd April

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 06:15 AM PST

BBC America have announced in association with Entertainment Weekly that the sixth series of Doctor Who will be premiering in the United States on Saturday 23rd April, at 9pm EST (8pm Central).
Doctor Who is coming to America in a spectacular two-part season premiere on BBC AMERICA. Part One premieres Saturday, April 23 at 9/8c. The mysterious time traveler, the Doctor (Matt Smith), and his companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), find themselves on a secret summons that takes them on an adventure from the desert in Utah - right to the Oval Office in1969. More details will be revealed in the coming weeks about this two-parter penned by 'Who supremo' Steven Moffat (Sherlock) and featuring guest star Mark Sheppard (Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica). Also set to return this season, Alex Kingston (ER, Flash Forward), as the irrepressible River Song.

The BBC Press Office have yet to officially announce a date for the new series commencing in the United Kingdom, but Doctor Who Magazine has indicated that it will be over the Easter weekend.

Doctor Who US Airdate!

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 05:51 AM PST

Entertainment Weekly have revealed that BBC America will be screening Part One of the Doctor Who Series 6 opener on Sunday, April 23rd at 9pm ET!

This means that the show will more than likely air in the USA a day after its UK premiere – it is unlikely that the USA will see the episode first.

Rumours in the UK indicate that the series – the second to star Matt Smith as the Doctor – will kick off on Saturday April 22nd (aka "Easter Saturday") with Part Two screening the day after on BBC One. There is as yet no confirmation as to the UK screening dates or times, however.

Written by Steven Moffat, the episode sees the Doctor and companions Amy and Rory on a secret summons that takes them from the desert in Utah to the Oval Office in 1969. The episode guest stars Mark Sheppard (Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica and many other US shows) and sees the return of Alex Kingston as River Song.

Exciting news for all fans in the USA!

Series 6: Same Day Broadcast in US and UK. Will Canada follow?

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 05:38 AM PST

We only received the first word that the BBC were going to air the new season of Doctor Who starting Easter Saturday (April 23) based on early reports of what was said in the latest issue of DWM when BBC America's blog didn't so much ramp up their publicity as launch like a rocket the news that they too would be starting to air the new season also on April 23.

They also have this really nifty little poster:
image

So what we hoped for at Christmas has come true. Doctor Who being broadcast on on two continents mere hours apart from each other.

No word from Space as to whether they will also be able to air in lockstep with the UK and US, or if they'll air a day later as with A Christmas Carol. Hopefully they'll be allowed to join in the fun.

Tennant in Africa

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 04:35 AM PST

During this time of year, when the BBC broadcasts its regular charity event Comic Relief, there's no end of celebrities and well known names that want to get involved with the project and do their bit to raise some money.

Previous TARDIS owner David Tennant is no different as he recently went to Africa as part of events in order raise awareness of how money raised during the charity event is spent over there.

Comic relief uses the money raised on its event nigh to help fight the illnesses that are rife among the population and Tennant has kept a diary of his time over there, to be published in the Radio Times, to tell readers exactly what he saw and the people that he met.

In one section he writes:

"Comic Relief asked me to travel to Uganda to see how the money you raise is used where it is needed most… I feel woefully under-qualified and ill-equipped, but I figure I can't keep reading out the phone number and telling everyone how necessary it is without seeing it up close."

Tennant has always been one to "muck in" during these kinds of events and his good nature and generous spirit will clearly be seen when clips of his experiences in the country are seen. It's always nice to see a celebrity give something back!

Various events are taking place over the next nine days for Red Nose Day but the main televised night will take place on Friday 18th March from 7.00pm on BBC One and BBC Two.

Not Gangers?!

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 04:05 AM PST

BREAKING NEWS!  Series 6 writer Matthew Graham, the fella behind the two-parter presently known as The Rebel Flesh/Gangers, may be changing half of his story's name!

About 15 minutes ago (at the time of writing), a tweet from Graham suggested that there may be a movement among key members of the production team to change Gangers to something else:

"Steven [Moffat] has just suggested a new title for my Ep 6.  I really like it.  Has an old school DW feel to it."

Despite Graham's "really liking it," even the Grand Moff's name for the story may not be the final identity for the episode.  Another tweet a few minutes later implied that Graham may be working with a different title of his own, or simply tweaking the executive producer's version:

"Titles for [Doctor Who] are tougher than you'd expect.  Tricksy little things.  Maybe I should've started with a cool title and built a script around it."

And, on top of all that, it's a possibility that Mr. Moffat may be looking to change the titles of other episodes in the season as well; here's Graham's most recent tweet (at the time of writing and published after we started writing!) in response to Doctor Who Magazine's Twitter feed:

"My copy [of DWM 432?] came through the door today.  Just been reading 'bout Moff looking at titles.  Which explains my new, cool Ep6 moniker."

Titles.  Plural.  Don't be surprised if we report more changes (perhaps an apostrophe on Demons Run?) to episode names in the near future.

While we're on the subject of birdsong, don't forget to follow us @kasterborousdw if you haven't already!

Matthew Graham's story is currently slated to appear in the spring half of Season 32, which should be premiering any week now.

A Beard for Lent

Posted: 08 Mar 2011 06:59 PM PST

It has been said that all the best male comic creators, all the best male science fiction authors, have at one time or another boasted a luxurious, bearlike, beard. Or if it hasn't, I just said it. I was wondering what a good thing to do for Lent would be (giving up alcohol is sort of just for oneself), and I was already a bit fuzzy what with the writerly existence and all, and anyhow, the long and the short of it is... well, here's me last night, the evening before the start of Lent...

Yes, I know, I'm already half way to being Patrick Moore. Anyhow, I thought why not go the whole way, let it grow and grow, and then at the end of Lent (Easter Sunday), shave it off? And to make this something one does for others, indeed, for a cause close to my heart, why not get people to sponsor the beardiness?

So I've set up a Just Giving page: A Beard for Lent and am there soliciting donations. Please pass that address around. As I've said on the page, I'll be reposting the best comments left with cash on here and on Twitter. And if you want to pay to promote something you're doing (within reason), I'll be happy to do that.

I'll be updating how the beard is going, on here and on the page, every Friday. And I'll be taking my fundraising proto-beard on the road to C2E2, a signing at Chaos City Comics in St. Albans, Anime Detour and Kapow before (and the good people there tell me they want to make a thing of it) having it shaved off at Illustrious, this year's Eastercon.

So please: a beard is just for Lent, not for Christmas. I won't stop until I've raised £1000 for Shelter. So donate quickly, for the sake of my wife's sanity. Cheerio!

If you haven't already heard, 2|entertain recently added two more Doctor Who stories to their list of upcoming DVD releases: The Reign of Vengeance and Terror on Varos (or was it the other way around?).

The Reign of Terror, infamous in the Whoniverse for being a complete ripoff of The Girl in the Fireplace, saw the First Doctor and companions Ian, Barbara, and Susan travel to Revolution-era Paris and encounter such notable figures as Robespierre, Napoleon, and the sweet and cuddly female butcher Madame Guillotine, who was kind enough to chop off episodes four and five so that we can't see them in their entire, original, live-action format.  As a result, 2|entertain promises that this DVD, like the VHS edition before it, will be mostly there but not quite:

"REIGN OF TERROR! To be released as complete as can realistically be achieved. Likely late 2012."

Vincent's Victory of the Vampires of Venice via Vengeance on Varos, infamous in the Whoniverse for being a complete ripoff of Bad Wolf, saw the Sixth Doctor and Peri meet that short green alien who isn't Yoda named Sil while being watched on TV by Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley (well that's who he reminds me of, anyway!) and a woman who simultaneously loves the Doctor and her Dystopian government.  There's some other stuff in there as well involving deadly desert mirages, vines that promise to kill the Doctor and company instantly if touched (they would have died maybe 27 times within a two-minute segment if that were true), and Peri turning into a bird, but we won't get into all that.  Vengeance was originally introduced to DVD technology in 2001; as such, this will be an extra-fancy "special edition."

Here's 2|entertain's Dan Hall talking to Doctor Who Online about the Varos announcement:

"We have been surprised and delighted by the fan campaigns that have championed for a Special Edition release of Vengeance on Varos, and due to the good old fashioned display of fan power that Doctor Who is famous for, 2|entertain have listened and can confirm a fast commission for the release in 2012."

If you skipped to the bottom of this article just to check the expected release date, we'll reiterate what has already been quoted and say that both The Reign of Terror and Vengeance on Varos will be out sometime in 2012.
