| Posted: 20 Mar 2011 09:35 AM PDT A new audio drama featuring the vocal talents of two former Doctors has just been released. The Minister of Chance is described as a new form of entertainment, a radiophonic drama, made using a combination of film and radio techniques and delivered by podcast. The series, which has won rave reviews from industry insiders, boasts an impressive cast with the Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy playing The Witch Prime and the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann playing Durian. Julian Wadham of The English Patient and The Madness of King George, plays The Minister, Jenny Agutter plays Professor Cantha and Paul Darrow plays Lord Rathen. The cast also features Gethin Anthony, Lauren Crace, Stuart Fox, Peter Guinness, Lloyd Hutchinson, Mark Lewis and Jay Taylor. The character of the Minister of Chance first appeared in Death Comes to Time, a BBC Doctor Who webcast first broadcast on the BBCi Cult website in the summer of 2001, where the character was played by Stephen Fry. Six episodes of this new series, which does not feature the character of The Doctor, are planned, of which the first two have been recorded. The completion of the series depends on the success of these episodes. A prologue and the first episode, The Broken World, can be downloaded now. | ||
| Comic Strips on iPad & PSP! Posted: 20 Mar 2011 07:58 AM PDT Great news for iPad and PlayStation Portable owners (who might be less than pleased given their device is about to become archaic…) is that IDW Publishing and BBC Worldwide America have announced the global digital launch of IDW's critically acclaimed DOCTOR WHO comic book series! Largely written by Tony Lee, the Doctor's comic book adventures can now be enjoyed on Apple iPads and iPhones, and Sony PSPs, IDW's DOCTOR WHO brings readers all-new adventures of the Eleventh Doctor. Sadly there is no word if the provision of a Sony PSP version will cross into the future shared gaming platform with Android phones, so the best news is, again, for Apple users at present.
Prior to this announcement, IDW's comics were only available in print in North America, and the series currently stands at over forty issues, each of which are available for iPads and iPhones as a custom branded app, and as individual issues on the PSP.

A breed common, one must therefore infer, to both Time Lord and Human. A breed quite possibly unique across the space time continuum itself. What astral being could someone as gifted and other-worldly as the Doctor aspire to? Gingers.
Ginger and Green should always be seen Oh yes. Just look at the evidence. They're all over the shop. Can Gingers be a common thread throughout an infinitely varied cosmos? Whether flung into the dark reaches of space (where no Carrot has gone before), entrenched as the last bastion of redness before mighty Shadow forces or speaking gibberish in a confounding Luc Besson movie, the influence of the freckled has been felt to infinity – and quite possibly beyond.
Why has the Doctor expressed such an interest in this "dying breed"? First one must ponder the doomed and tragic fate Gingers face. It's all down to a recessive gene: it takes two Gingers to make another, or at least two with the Ginger Gene, if not Ginger hair. I therefore submit that given the Doctor's belief that he can simply manifest his Gingerosity without said need for the gene pairing (but a mere regeneration) it's incumbent upon him to repopulate the future-extinct Ginger race. It's only proper: Would Picard have been able to fend of the gruesome Borg if not unburdened of his maudlin introspection by a pouting Dr Crusher? Would the all-conquering Shadows not have been stopped it not for hybrid Ginger-path Lyta Alexander? And what on this Earth would an enormous slice of Dr Who fans do without Amy Pond? The Doctor understands this and has taken steps to remedy it. And it's a long term strategy. Consider: Liz Shaw, Turlough, Mel Bush, Donna Noble and the aforementioned apple of the Doctor's eye, Pond, all served as Ginger assistants and quite apart from his protective stewardship they could easily have been subjected to furtive genetic examinations. He probably has a pair of particularly powerful reading glasses that scan DNA.
Donna attempts to perfect "The Bonny", as perfected by Mel Bush. Is the future of the Ginger race assured with his doting oversight? Or may we assume retrospective success given that Gingers have indeed been here at all? (Hey for all we know we were wiped out already and he brought us back). Regardless, he's got an agenda. And for the sake of contemporary sci-fi if not my great, great, great, great, great, great grandkids, I hope he succeeds. Then again they wouldn't have to put up with jibes of Fanta-Pants at hyperschool, would they? [Thanks to Al Shaw for the background info on the Gingers. | Review: Planet of the Spiders - DVD Posted: 20 Mar 2011 05:40 AM PDT Manufacturer: BBC DVD / 2|Entertain Written By: Robert Sloman and Barry Letts RRP: &ound;20.42 Release Date: 18th April 2011
Reviewed By: Dale Who for Doctor Who Online Review Posted: 20th March 2011 The epic, six part conclusion to Jon Pertwee's era of Doctor Who arrives with this double disc DVD from BBC DVD / 2|Entertain. Disc one is the episodic version of Planet of the Spiders, complete with an optional commentary from Elisabeth Sladen, Richard Franklin and the now sadly passed away and much loved and missed Nicholas Courtney. All the info usual text is available and it's a great romp; one hundred and fifty minutes of classic science fantasy television. The giant spiders of Metebelis Three are after the blue crystal The Doctor removed from the planet back in The Green Death, and will stop at nothing to get it back in their webby little legs... Pertwee's swansong adventure is a long, but very entertaining affair. It features every form of transport you can think of, and even some dashing about in the TARDIS - something or a rarity for this incarnation of the Time Lord. The UNIT family are all together one last time, and it's a celebration of the Third Doctor, and all handled in precisely the way that had made the first colour season of Doctor Who work so well. It's fun, exciting and worth every second. You'll never look at those big spiders in your bathroom the same way again... On disc two there's the extras, and something quite surprising. There's a really nicely put together look back over Pertwee's time as the Doctor, and an equally warm feature with Barry Letts looking back on his time with Doctor Who; both of which show just how much work and love went into the show from start to finish. Both featurettes have contributions from a variety of sources, including Jon Pertwee, Terrance Dicks, and of course Barry Letts himself. There are also some great anecdotes from people like Mat Irvine on the spider props and the lesson of telling people what you need in good time; and from John Kane, the immensely likeable and gentle Tommy in the story, on his memories of Who and what he's done since. Then there's the longest television trailer ever for a repeat run of Planet of the Spiders shown as one long story on a Saturday afternoon in December on BBC1 - the trailer just rambles on and on and on, with clips upon clips; it looked like the BBC had a lot of time to fill that Christmas! And then, the surprising thing is... they included the abridged story itself! The unrestored and very long edited together version is here too for your enjoyment, which slightly mystifies me, as there's no extra material as there was with the Battlefield release for example, but if you're a completist it's all good for the collection. The story gets 10/10 for being suitably epic and wrapping up the UNIT years with panache and style, and the extras get 10/10 for leaving you with a warm glow that Doctor Who was genuinely loved and cared for during Pertwee's tenure as the Time Lord.

| So, what question was Amy going to ask the Doctor? Posted: 20 Mar 2011 01:24 AM PDT Another mystery has been added to the mix today! | Posted: 19 Mar 2011 10:31 PM PDT OK brace yourselves, Kasterborites – there is a lot to take in here. This is the story of Steven Clark, who claims to have created Dalek creator Davros (not to mention the Kaleds) in a competition entry for TV Action comic in 1972. It sounds crazy, doesn't it? Yet Mr Clark has been pushing this claim for years now, contacting various Doctor Who websites over this time and has even hired a lawyer. Today, Mr Clark appears in the Daily Mail, who report that he is indeed suing the BBC over a share of revenue made from the Davros character and to demand that he is credited as his creator. Don't check your calendar – it's not April 1st. This is a genuine legal case. For the younger fans among you, Davros first appeared in 1975 story Genesis of the Daleks, written by Terry Nation who had created the Dalek, Dal and Thal characters 12 years earlier for The Daleks. Genesis was the first time a Dalek creator had been seen on screen (previously Yarvelling had been credited as their fictional creator in TV21 comic) and indeed the first time the term Kaled was used in favour of Dal. So with a competition in 1972 which a teenaged Steven Clark entered falling away into the midsts of time, three years later he was apparently surprised to find Davros (Michael Wisher) appearing on TV for the first time facing the Fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker.
With £140 million in profits generated by Doctor Who, it would seem likely that Mr Clark won't be turning down any remuneration in the event that his claim is deemed to be valid.
In late 2009 Mr Clark contacted Kasterborous with various documents – such as this Intellectual Property Office image which is part of the gentleman's claim – as well as a fascinating chronology of events. This includes some interesting titbits, such as:
We opted not to report this when Mr Clark first contacted us back in 2009:
Of course, there is a precedent to all of this – Raymond Cusick, creator of the Dalek "look", was never credited as such for many years and received a one-off payment for a design that has netted the BBC and Terry Nation a lot of money over the years. However clearly Mr Clark's case is quite different, and we're sure it will be dealt with appropriately by all concerned parties and the legal process. It looks as though this is a case to which there is an obvious answer – the BBC made a big mistake tying up the ownership of Davros and Mr Clark has his dates wrong. However, we suspect that whatever happens, this could end up being quite a high-profile case should it ever reach court… | ||

| Matt Smith Back For 2012 Series Posted: 19 Mar 2011 08:50 PM PDT Matt Smith has no plans to leave Doctor Who as he reveals he is going back to film the 2012 series. It has previously been reported that the quirky actor was planning to leave the hit sci-fi show after the upcoming series airs on BBC this spring, however in an interview with The Daily Telegraph the star has insisted that he doesn’t want to ‘give it up anytime soon.’ “I’m going back this year,” he said. “I guess [I'll] get another one out the way, see what everyone thinks of that. I love doing it, I don’t want to give it up anytime soon, put it that way.” Smith also confessed that he was terrified about his debut on the show last year, because he wasn’t sure fans would accept him as David Tennant’s successor. “Before that came out, I didn’t know if people were going to hurl tomatoes at me,” he said. “I had no idea. But then I suppose every actor goes through that period of, ‘Like me! Like me!’ That’s part of being an artist, I think.” [Sources: Unreality TV; The Daily Telegraph] | ||
