Stetsons are Cool

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 08:36 AM PDT

Fez fans beware; there's a new cowboy in town. It seems that during his little jaunt across the pond the Doctor became more than a little enamoured with his new head gear. That's right hat fans, Stetsons are cool.

Snapped filming episode twelve in Penarth, the Doctor, in his soon to be trademark green jacket, was seen greeting returnee Craig Owens (James Corden) apparently still wearing his new hat-crush from the opening two parter The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon.

It seems the hat has escaped the fate dealt to the Fez by River Song and is here to stay… or the Doctor learned to duck.

You can check out more shots of his new look (snapped by Paul Mount) and all of the days action on location at the SFX website – and when you've done that, don't forget to tell us what you think of the new hat and coat combination for the Eleventh Doctor. After successfully resurrecting the Harris Tweed industry last year, could he be attempting to single-handedly kick-start a return to 19th century fashions?

Sheen Confirmed for Gaiman Episode

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:26 AM PDT

Neil Gaiman, fantasist, writer and owner of corkscrew hair, has confirmed that Frost/Nixon star Michael Sheen will be lending his voice to a character in the author's Series 6 episode.

Responding to comments made by Sheen after students grilled him about the recent report that Manic Street Preachers bassist/lyricist Nicky Wire wants him to play Dylan Thomas if his fan fiction ever becomes TV reality during his visit to the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Gaiman tweeted:

"It's true."

Sheen is perhaps best know for inhabiting the skin of former Labour leader turned war criminal Tony Blair on no less than three occasions in Channel Four drama The Deal (featuring Jackson Lake himself David Morrissey as Gordon Brown), the Academy Award winning The Queen and the fittingly Anglo-American production The Special Relationship respectively.

Sheen has also tackled the lives of David Frost, Kenneth Williams, Brian Clough, H.G. Wells and Emperor Nero to name a few.

The news itself may be a little light in the facts department but there's no doubting Sheen's uncanny knack for getting under the skin of  real life figures- Some in fact might see it as a loss that he might not be playing someone who'll showcase his this ability though everyone one else will be jumping for joy that another talented actor has joined the Who roster.

Gaimans episode- set to be fourth in the running- will also feature former Coronation Street star Suranne Jones as Idris and has already been called 'a beautiful poem of an episode' by Steven Moffat himself.

Genesis Of The Daleks Vintage Beeb Edition

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 02:17 AM PDT

Doctor Who - Genesis of the DaleksVintage Beeb is a new label that's releasing classic albums onto CD. Titles include Dad's Army and Monty Python all with original sleeve designs plus the CDs themselves look like mini vinyl LPs. Genesis Of The Daleks was originally released in 1979 and condenses the original 6 part story into around an hour. The blurb on the back informs us of the exciting adventure that awaits us…

Doctor Who and his travelling companions Sarah and Harry, has landed on a desolate planet called Skaro. As he surveys the barren landscape, a Time Lord appears and tells him he has been brought there to try and advert the creation of the Daleks, and thus prevent them from being the dominant creature in the universe…

With linking narration from Tom Baker, here in a suitably solemn mood, this is still one of the finest Doctor Who adventures of his reign. None of the impact is lost here, the Doctor is serious and dramatic, Davros remains a dark and sinister creation and the Daleks themselves sound even more chilling in audio only mode. Nyder, played perfectly by Peter Miles scoops the prize for most thrilling vocal. Nyder was almost as evil as Davros and is probably Terry Nations most perfect humanoid creation.

The linking material by David Goom captures the eerie essence of this adventure. One mustn't forget the tone of this adventure is incredibly dark and the way it deals with the oppression is skilfully written.

The selling point here is the way this has been packed. This is a great release, just seeing the old BBC Records and Tapes logo sends a chill up my spine and the reproduction of the original record label adds that authentic touch. The remastering is good without spoiling the experience, you can still hear the roughness of the studio recording.

Whether you're a completist or casual fan, this is a great way of enjoying the adventure in a compact way (pun intended!).

Genesis of the Daleks Vintage Beeb Edition has an RRP of £6.10 but you can buy a copy for just £3.05 on Amazon.

A message from Joey over at The Third Zone...

"Issue Two of The Third Zone has arrived...

The latest merchandise has been reviewed. From Big Finish we have The Feast of Axos, The Perpetual Bond and Andy has tackled both The Mutants and The Ark on DVD. Note – we were going to include the latest eighth Doctor audio Lucie Miller but we have decided to review the two-part storyline as a whole.

This months Matter of Perspective sees Steve Lyons popular New Adventure, Conundrum come under the limelight. Reversing our roles from last month, Andy has been reading away and has a good grilling by yours truly.

The Evelyn Escapades seems to have been one of the most popular elements on the site with the most hits (the reviews excepted) and this month we have completed two stories and have posted our responses The Spectre of Lanyon Moor.

Charlotte and Simon, our non-fan cohorts have been watching the William Hartnell classic, Planet of Giants.

Exciting interviews with two of Big Finish's most exciting writers, Jacqueline Rayner (Wolfsbane, Dr Who & the Pirates) and Simon Guerrier (The Perpetual Bond). They share their thoughts on their latest work.

Who Online this month praises the Big Finish review and voting site, The Time Scales.

I look back at Nicholas Courtney's contributions to Doctor Who and include my top five favourite Brigadier stories.

All this plus part two of our exciting three part fiction piece, The Shadows Makers written by Joe Ford and an essay looking at the delightful Big Finish spin off The Companion Chronicles Seasons 1-3

Any comments can be posted on the site or sent to thethirdzone@hotmail.co.uk

Issue three will be released March 15th – happy reading!"
