| Posted: 29 Mar 2011 12:54 PM PDT That's right people it's Tom Baker Wednesday here at Kasterborous where we will have several news items and interesting posts concerning the legendary actor whose portrayal of the Doctor remains the most recognised of them all! You can consider it a modest tribute to the man who hooked many of us in the Kasterborous team onto the show with his unique and idiosyncratic portrayal of everyone's favourite Time Lord between 1974 and 1981. On a personal note, I'm a huge fan of the man whose voice – as you will see tomorrow – seems to have been bestowed on him by God. Given the actor in question's own history with the Creator, however, this might be viewed as a point of contention! In fact I even got to meet Tom once, at a book signing in Leeds when he was touring the UK to promote Who On Earth Is Tom Baker? This took place, as I recall, in the Autumn and with me was a girl called Claire that I had been dating for a few months. We queued for at least an hour around the bookshop (which I think I'm right in saying is no longer there) which I think was on The Headrow and eventually settled into the final straight. With short Cybermen and a Timothy Claypole-esque Master wandering around I felt extremely self-conscious; this was the first time I had ever been in the vicinity of other Doctor Who fans. The young lady I was with was certainly not a fan although she had tolerated a few VHS sessions! Eventually we reached the end of the queue, and there, larger than life – indeed, larger than anyone I had ever seen in my life – was the Fourth Doctor Tom Baker. Although a tall gentleman, Tom seemed to occupy dimensions that other people are yet to discover – his presence was immense! I sauntered over to The Great Man and handed him my pre-bought copy of his autobiography. "Hi, I'm Christian." Tom looked up and frowned. "And does the young lady have any part in this?" I looked around, and saw that Claire had stayed in her previous position beside me at the top of the queue. Tom gestured for her to come forward while I – happy to be the sole recipient of the Doctor's autograph – was quickly seeing my day ruined as I introduced the girl. "This is "Claire"", I said, "with an "e"." Just have a think about all of the ways you can spell that particular name. Almost all of them have an "e" in there somewhere. "Ahhahhh," he really REALLY did that. "Would there be an "i" in there also…?" I swear he did that quizzicle frown face at that point, but by then I was as red-faced as a beetroot, wielding a copy of a book I had been looking forward to for months that not only had my name written by the Doctor's own hand, but that of a girl I had an on-off relationship with. As fate would have it, it wasn't long before it was switched off for good… The point is, Tom Baker is a true legend, not just of Doctor Who but of (Little) Britain. He's great to watch, listen to and look at, and Tom Baker Wednesday is our modest but well-deserved tribute to a chap who has made so many people happy by playing the Doctor in the past, and is set to once again with Big Finish. | ||

| Torchwood: Week Ten/Eleven Production Posted: 29 Mar 2011 07:48 AM PDT A quieter fortnight in terms of news filtering out from the ongoing production of Miracle Day - at this point, principle photography was taking place on episode five, with production meetings taking place for episodes seven and eight. However, public announcements over the course of the two weeks more than made up for quieter set reporting! Last week saw the first official poster released by Starz for Miracle Day, announcing the launch date in the United States for Friday 8th July 2011, with a press release indicating the time as 10pm ET/PT. The United Kingdom broadcast date is yet to be confirmed, but is widely expected to be close to the the same date. However, publicity photos have yet to be released for the series, though shoots for these took place in Swansea (28th January) and in Los Angeles (5th March). It seems likely that the publicity engine will kick into full gear at the MIPTV Media Market in Cannes on Monday 4th April; as previously reported, the show is one of several being showcased at the event, with principle stars John Barrowman and Bill Pullman there to help with promotion, alongside executive producer Julie Gardner. The press release for this event also indicates that the series will consist of ten 50 minute episodes. The principle cast have all been busy this fortnight, with John Barrowman, Mekhi Phifer and Alexa Havins seen on location, and Kai Owen tweeting prominently from the sets! As production has progressed, of course, more of the supporting cast and extras have come to light. The following is a list of those previously unreported, compiled from various casting agencies, resumes, and IMDB listings: Cris D'Annunzio; Richard Augustine (George Sayer); Brad Bell; Amy Benedict (Bridget Howe); Marina Benedict (Charlotte Willis); Candace Brown (Sarah Drummond); Ron Butler; Antonio D. Charity (Airport Security Guard); Tug Coker (Geoff Reed); Ewan Chung (Yu-King So); Jonathan Dane ("handsome man"); Joseph Eid (Man #1); Chrissie Fit (Assistant); Andrew Fowler (immortal patient); Laura Gardner; Brittnee Garza; Lauri Hendler (Angry Nurse); Paul James (Noah Vickers); Liz Jenkins ("Recurring"); Ronobir Lahiri (Simran Baidwan); Shaun Lucas ("patient"); Don Luce (Gate Guard); Jessica Matthews (News Anchor); Nick Salter; Jeffery Self (James Percey); Jonathan Spencer (Tony); A.J. Tannen (Government Clerk); Brian Treitler (Dr. Murphy); Randa Walker (Candace Perlmutter); Maurice Webster (Cop); Luke White (Emt); David Youse (Dr. Rosenbloom). Another name associated with the new series is Olivia Hallinan; listed on IMDB as playing "Emma / Kate Dysart", the actress has appeared in Torchwood before in the Series One episode Out of Time, where she played Emma-Louise Cowell, the only time traveller from that story to continue her life in the present day. However, there has been no official confirmation of the actress's casting, or if "Emma" is indeed the same character. Production-wise, the BBC Production Office reported that special effects and makeup supervisor Greg Nicotero had joined the production team; previous television projects include The Walking Dead, The Pacific and Deadwood, and films like Predators, Surrogates, Sin City and Kill Bill Vols 1+2. Times cited within reports below are in Los Angeles local time. Monday 14th MarchBack to the beach! The production returned to Venice Beach for further filming during the day, this time along Westminster Avenue; scenes involved John Barrowman, Mekhi Phifer and Alexa Havins, with action including Rex being taken away in the back of an ambulance.Jeremy Burleson was visiting the beach that day and saw some of the activity, even ending up in the background for a shot! 14:56 At this movie shoot on Venice Beach!!!!!!!! Wow At this TV shoot in Los Angeles (via TwitVid) (note: some browsers may need to right-click, "reload frame" to see video) Other filming-related tweets include: 14:11 CF Walking down Venice and ran into the #Torchwood team filmingPhotos from the shoot were also published of the cast members by the Visual Press Agency, and may be seen via Padabee. Tuesday 15th March - Friday 18th MarchDocumentation reported that filming would be taking place at Angels Gate Park at San Pedro for the rest of the week, though little was to be heard of the crew whilst there, Kai Owen also indicated further work at Venice Beach on Wednesday, though of course he could just have visited as a tourist!Jane Espenson revealed on Tuesday that Brad Bell, aka "Cheeks", would be guesting on the show; an artist who experiments in the world of music, art and the media, he has become a popular icon on the Internet. This will be one of his first television roles. On Wednesday the BBC Production Office reported that Greg Nicotero was on board to build an alien for the show - the first indication that there is more to the mysterious 'immortality' that pervades the 'Miracle Day' than meets the eye! Tweets over the next couple of days: 15 18:17 KO Beautiful LA evening off out for a burger and beers with @natiejay. Back in Week Five, Shawna Trpcic posted this photo via Twitpic of a 'mystery man' posing alongside herself and John Barrowman. Filming on the day (11th February) had revolved around a bar, with the storyline reported of Jack picking up a barman for the evening. The man of mystery has now been revealed as actor Dillon Casey, who talked about his experiences with Torchwood and John Barrowman in his blogging video:As reported above, night shoots were on the way, with schedules indicating long production days of 09:00-04:00 (17th) and 09:00-05:00 (18th), the final evening this week assuming its usual 'Fraturday' designation! 17 21:45 ST Moulin rouge inspiration After late nights, it's early calls for next week! 19 07:37 ST Monday call for 3 of my crew is 4:30am @ location 2 hours away Monday 21st MarchMonday saw filming return (according to schedules) to Angels Gate Park, with Brad Bell filming his first scene and rumours of Greg Nicotero's creation being on set too!06:08 BB Long drive. Rain. Aliens. Tuesday 22nd MarchTuesday was another quiet day, believed again to be the park; meanwhile, plans for the next photoshoot for Captain Jack were also unveiled ...10:29 KO Just been for a run around the park. Great way to start the day. Wednesday 23rd MarchToday it was reported that filming would be taking place at the Alexandria Hotel, though the famous iconic site may have been used for the Captain Jack promotional shoot mentioned on Tuesday.Meanwhile, Jane Espenson further elaborated on Russell T Davies's importance to the show: 12:46 Torchwood does not require prepping with Doctor Who. And of course, todsy was when Starz unveiled the launch date for Miracle Day for the United States - 107 days and counting! Thursday 24th - Friday 25th MarchBack to the backlot it seems, and at least Kai Owen sounded happy: "On set today with some fine WELSH talent."Meanwhile, production meetings continued apace: 13:35 BBC Production meeting for Episode 7 | ||
| Posted: 29 Mar 2011 06:56 AM PDT One of this year's Torchwood writers, John Shiban is rumoured to be in talks with American television network AMC to produce a new science fiction drama about mankind's first encounter with extra terrestrials. Called The Voyage, it will see a female scientist working in a jet propulsion lab trying her hardest to interact with alien life. Isn't Torchwood a show that focuses on the 21st century, "when everything changes"? Sound a little close to home? But does America or anyone else need another science fiction show? With so many available, will the networks reach overkill and get bored with the genre? Of course it may well be that the show is set in the far future so there may be some differences, we'll just have to wait and see. Shiban has previously written for AMC's Breaking Bad and also for popular fantasy drama The Vampire Diaries. He's worked on Buffy clone Supernatural and now had Torchwood under his belt as well. The AMC channel has come under the limelight recently for screening the absolutely fantastic The Walking Dead, an apocalyptic Zombie drama set in America and starring British actor Andrew Lincoln in the lead role. Right now, it looks like John has written for episode 6 of the new series of Torchwood but in the ever changing universe of Doctor Who and its sister shows, these things can always change at the last minute. | ||

| Posted: 29 Mar 2011 04:02 AM PDT As well as creating some of the finest Doctor Who adventures ever seen and creating a whole spin off universe as well it seems that Russell T Davies is something of a campaigner as well. Recent fears about the future of the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea, which is home to "unparalleled" literary and artistic events (the quote marks aren't for cynicism but catching some of the adjectives used by others!) have caused Davies and a host of others to send a signed letter of concern. Swansea council received the letter, signed by over two hundred artists, writers and supporters of the centre, recently. It seems that the council and local universities plan to turn the centre into a "cultural and enterprise hub" and want to give it an update for the twenty first century but others, including actor Michael Sheen (who you may know is voicing a character in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who) , feel that the best way to keep the centres future assured is by focusing on the one hundredth anniversary of the poet Dylan Thomas' birth in 2014. Part of their letter in regard to this aspect states:
The council responded by stating that they were making "significant preparations" for the upcoming anniversary and that The Dylan Thomas Centre had no threat of closure whatsoever. Let's hope that the people's say actually reflects in the future decisions that are made within regards to this landmark building. | ||

| BBC Learning, Script to Screen Competition Posted: 29 Mar 2011 03:27 AM PDT To herald the new series of Doctor Who, BBC Learning and Doctor Who Confidential today announced Script To Screen, an exciting competition that will give one lucky team of school children the chance to write their own Doctor Who mini-adventure starring the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. To win this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, school children aged 9 to 11 years will be encouraged to collaborate on a three-minute script that takes the resident Time Lord on a new quest travelling through space and time inside the TARDIS. The lucky winners will travel to the BBC's studios in Cardiff where they will see their script brought to life by the Doctor Who team and cast, including Matt Smith. Doctor Who Confidential will also be on hand to take viewers behind the scenes to show how the script gets developed from paper to television screen – from the first script meeting, a cast read-through, on-set filming... all the way to the final edit. Saul Nassé, Controller of BBC Learning, said: "Doctor Who is loved by children across the UK, and I can think of no better programme to inspire the next generation of story tellers. "The Script to Screen competition is a fantastic way for children to learn new writing skills, whether or not they are winners. We are delighted that the stellar cast and crew of Doctor Who are on board for this journey of learning through time and space." Children can be as creative and imaginative as they like in order to put together a story that's filled with all the excitement and adventure of the popular BBC One sci-fi drama. The action-packed script must feature Matt Smith and can include one of four fearsome monsters/aliens from the show: Ood, Judoon, Cyberman or Weeping Angel, as well as a brand new human character to test the wits of the Doctor. Tailored learning resources will be available on the BBC Learning website to help guide teachers and pupils through the process. BAFTA winner and head writer at Doctor Who, Steven Moffat, will also offer his expert advice and helpful tips on how to pull together a stand-out script with memorable characters. Steven Moffat said: "Doctor Who made me want to write. It made me fall in love in television, script-writing and storytelling, and led me by the hand to the best job in the world. It also made me want to defend the Earth from aliens but that hasn't come up so often. "I know the power this show has to set young imaginations alight, because I've lived it, so I'm incredibly excited to be involved in this project. Plus it's never too early to start looking for your replacement." The winning script will be chosen by Steven Moffat, Saul Nassé and executive producers of Doctor Who, Piers Wenger and Beth Willis. | Doctor Who Trailer – Past Your Bedtime! Posted: 29 Mar 2011 12:34 AM PDT Get ready for tonight on BBC One, people, where between the end of Silk and the beginning of the BBC News at Ten you can catch a new 60 second trailer for the new series of Doctor Who! A bit late you say? It's a fair point, so usefully a short, less frightening trailer will be aired on the CBBC channel earlier in the evening. So with lots of scenes of Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and Alex Kingston as the Doctor, Amy, Rory and the enigmatic River Song strung together with monsters, guest stars and great incidental music for the adults and a little bit less for the little people, there is one big question hanging over this. Why the cut? Why air a trailer on CBBCs for a show the usual target viewers will want to watch (note that this is CBBC and not CBeebies) and cut out the scary bits? We can only surmise that as it is too scary for the wee ones at that time of day, this hints at the tone of the series as a whole. Could this herald a change in scheduling for Doctor Who in 2011? In 2010 the series suffered from scheduling all over the shop between 6pm and 7pm – with this sort of control over the trailer could it be that Doctor Who will be returning to its 2005-2008 scheduling of 7pm? (Via Doctor Who News Page) | ||

| Posted: 28 Mar 2011 10:13 PM PDT Queer as Folk was a watershed moment for many teenagers looking for an outlet for their burgeoning sexuality. The landmark series written by former Doctor Who Head Writer Russell T. Davies allowed audiences to traverse the Canal Street gay scene with breakthrough characters who echoed their own concerns: love, sex, commitment and identity. One of those fans was openly gay actor/presenter Andrew Hayden-Smith, former Byker Grove star and guest star in Series 2 episodes Rise of the Cybermen and The Age of Steel who has been talking about his experiences working on Doctor Who. While working as a presenter for CBBC, a producer and life long Doctor Who fan encouraged Hayden-Smith to call Davies about appearing as an extra on the programme:
As his last appearance in Doctor Who aired Hayden-Smith had already decided to take a well earned break. Stints in theatre and work as an announcer for ITV followed before Hayden-Smith returns to our screens this summer in a project he's keeping quiet on for now:

From "Allons-y!" wristbands to TARDIS necklaces, Dalek cufflinks and K-9 earrings, the originality of Who decor on this site for both humans and walls is endless. It's like all the most creative people in the world all became Doctor Who fans at once and put up all their tantalizing products up on the same website! Did I mention there's a wallet whose fabric is a screencap from Victory of the Daleks? And remember the poster from The Dalek Invasion of Earth forbidding the dumping of bodies in the river (who doesn't?)? That's there too, only £6.41 plus shipping. 2. RedBubbleThis site's selection of Doctorchandise consists primarily of t-shirts. And more t-shirts. And even more t-shirts. This isn't a bad thing, however, except in the sense that, like the other two web resources listed on this page, you'll have to make a difficult decision because there's too much awesome to choose from! The traditional "The Angels Have the Phone Box" tee is present in various forms, as well as R2-D2 driving a Dalek (pictured), another Dalek kicked back in a recliner watching a bit of telly, a rock concert featuring four different Doctors with Whovian instruments as musical instruments, and an infinite number of shirts that read "I ♥ ♥ Doctor Who," "WWTDD (What Would The Doctor Do?)," and "Bad Wolf." And that's all barely scratched the surface. Click the link above to be amazed for hours. 3. Raygun RobynAs US-based Raygun Robyn is an individual who caters to sci-fi fandom in general, her selection of Who-related items (mostly apparel) isn't quite as broad as those of the aforementioned multi-vendor sites Etsy and Redbubble. But it is perhaps the most unique, and it seems to be her most popular line of business. Frankly, writing for a Doctor Who news site, and more importantly, being a man, I never would have thought I'd end up discussing style and fashion, but Raygun's design sense is such that even a closet nerd can shamelessly wear her selection of TARDIS clothing in public. T-shirts, hoodies, messenger bags, and specifically for the ladies, dresses and tote bags, all feature the best time machine ever floating through space with a subtle effect that renders them just plain brilliant. Click the link up there and take a look! Raygun also has a bit of a side market that includes customizable Torchwood ID cards, which I'll be posting a review of later in the week. | Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:28 PM PDT Format hounds will be getting more than just new content at this years MIPTV Media Market- they'll also have to contend with John Barrowman and Bill Pullman who'll be pitching up their Torchwood: Miracle Day wagon to drum up a pigeon or two in Cannes this April. For those not in the biz MIPTV's Media Market is where the latest innovations (and Torchwood) in TV, Internet, Mobile and all 'video rich' platforms are brought by companies around the globe. In other words it means a lot to BBC Worldwide; so much so that Steve Macallister, Managing Director of BBC Worldwide Sales & Distribution gushed:
Also in attendance and most definitely third in the list of 'star most potential buyers want their photograph taken with' is Executive Producer Julie Gardner. Torchwood: Miracle Day sees CIA Operative Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer) join forces with Captain Jack (John Barrowman) and Gwen (Eve Myles) to investigate a global conspiracy that has resulted in the end of human deaths. Bill Pullman plays Oswald Danes, a convicted child killer who survives his own execution. |

The BBC have launched a new competition which gives a team of UK primary school children the chance to write their own Doctor Who mini-adventure starring the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. The competition, produced by BBC Learning and Doctor Who Confidential is for school children aged 9 to 11 years who will be encouraged to collaborate on a three-minute script that takes the Time Lord on a new quest travelling through space and time inside the TARDIS. The winners will travel to the BBC's studios in Cardiff where they will see their script brought to life by the Doctor Who team and cast, including Matt Smith. Doctor Who Confidential will take viewers behind the scenes to show how the script gets developed from paper to television screen – from the first script meeting, a cast read-through, on-set filming... all the way to the final edit.
