Doctor Who at WonderCon roundup

Posted: 03 Apr 2011 12:19 PM PDT

BBC America have released a new episode of Insider; looking behind-the-scenes of the 2011 Series of Doctor Who. See the video below.

The video premiered at the Doctor Who panel during WonderCon where Toby Haynes, Mark Sheppard and Neil Gaiman were talking about the new series. Two clips from the new series were shown. The first clip was from The Impossible Astronaut. Charlie Jane Anders of io9.com was at the event and described both of these scenes:
Mark Sheppard's character, Delaware, is drinking in a bar when he gets recruited for a government mission. Delaware has left the FBI but President Nixon wants him for a secret mission. "You were my second choice for this mission," Nixon tells Delaware. "That's all right," Delaware replies. "You were my second choice for president." And meanwhile, in the TARDIS, River Song is telling the Doctor and friends about Delaware and his mission.
The second clip shown was from Gaiman's episode, The Doctor's Wife:
"The Doctor, Amy and Rory are on the spaceship graveyard planet, meeting a group of four or five people — including an Ood. Amy is alarmed by the Ood, but the Doctor tells her not to be scared. The Ood has a broken speech globe, but the Doctor repairs it — at which point, a babble of weird voices comes out until it shuts off. The Doctor is incredibly freaked out, and starts asking who else is there. Just The Room, explains the older woman in the group of natives. They're inside the Room and standing on it — the whole planet is The Room. The Doctor can meet The Room if he likes. The Doctor is very eager to do so — and Amy asks what those voices were. "Time Lords," the Doctor explains. Near here someplace, there are "lots and lots of Time Lords."
Gaiman explained the backstory of his episode:
It was going to be episode eleven of the last season. But I got a sad email as they started shooting the last season, when they got up to the point where they were going to be shooting my episode. It said, "We've run out of money, so we're going to be shooting The Lodger instead because we can shoot that in a flat around the corner. And we can't make your episode in the flat around the corner."

Mannequin Mayhem DVD Artwork

Posted: 03 Apr 2011 04:46 AM PDT

Artwork for the upcoming Mannequin Mayhem DVD boxset – including the Third Doctor classic's Spearhead from Space and Terror of the Autons – has been previewed by 2|entertain.

For those not in the know Spearhead from Space features the newly regenerated Doctor (Jon Pertwee) exiled by the Time Lords to Earth where he teams up with UNIT to investigate a meteor shower that's strangely connected to a plastics factory.

Terror of the Autons is the first story to feature the Doctor's Moriarty, the Master (Roger Delgado) who arriving on Earth is at the forefront of a second Auton invasion leaving the Doctor and Jo to face the plastic peril and some deadly daffodils.

Each set comes loaded with extras including:
Doctor Who - Spearhead from Space

Spearhead from Space

  • Two commentaries: One with actors Caroline John and Nicholas Courtney and another with producer Derrick Sherwin and script editor Terrance Dicks.
  • Down to Earth – Cast and crew look back at the making of this story and how a strike at the BBC studios inadvertently created the only classic series story to be made entirely on film. With actor Jon Pertwee, producers Derrick Sherwin and Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks, costume designer Christine Rawlins and assistant script editor (and inadvertent Auton actor) Robin Squire. Narrated by Carl Kennedy.
  • Regenerations - From Black and White to Colour – Spearhead from Space marked not only the arrival of a new Doctor but also the transition from black and white to colour. This documentary looks at the challenges faced by programme makers during this period.
  • UNIT Recruitment Film (dur. 4' 48") – a spoof army recruitment film put together for BBC transmission during Doctor Who's 30th anniversary celebrations in 1993.
  • Trailers – two trailers for the 1999 BBC2 transmission of the story and for 'Doctor Who Night' from the same year.
  • Photo Gallery

Doctor Who - Terror of the Autons

Terror of the Autons

  • Commentary – With actors Katy Manning and Nicolas Courtney, producer Barry Letts.
  • Life on Earth – In this documentary, cast and crew look back at the making of the story and the differences in the way Doctor Who was made in the seventies compared to now.
  • The Doctor's Moriarty– with the introduction of the Master, the Doctor now had his very own Moriarty, who would be the dark figure behind every story in season eight, and many more beyond that. This featurette discusses the enduring appeal of the character.
  • Plastic Fantastic – how did the writers of Doctor Who and other programmes take something as everyday as plastic and turn it against us?
  • Photo Gallery
  • Coming Soon trailer.
  • Radio Times Listings and promotional material in Adobe PDF format.

The boxset will be available on the 9th May and can be pre-ordered from Amazon for £17.93!

PodKast Hits iTunes!

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 10:54 PM PDT

iTunes users will be delighted to know that the Kasterborous podKast has finally hit the popular online music store, where it now sites proudly alongside other Doctor Who podcasts!

If you're been away from the site for a few weeks, you probably don't know that we've relaunched the old Kasterborous podKasts, keeping plenty of humour but featuring instead some interviews and discussion of the previous week's news.

Joining Christian Cawley for these new podKasts is James McLean, a long-term fan of Doctor Who and a man who knows what he does and doesn't like. We've had some very interesting chats during the course of these new podKasts, which have so far featured discussions about the recent teaser trailer and an interview with Hayden Black, creator Goodnight Burbank who is also a Doctor Who fan. (Incidentally, Goodnight Burbank features a guest appearance from one John Barrowman…)

Along with these brand new podKasts – which will continue on a weekly basis – we've also got the "classic" Kasterborous podKasts featuring Christian Cawley and Brian A. Terranova (who we hope will be able to join us on the new podKasts at some point).

These are more off-the-wall and idiosyncratic audio events, featuring such gems as:

  • An interview with the Master
  • The discovery that Russell T Davies' rights-dodging Dalek substitute in 2005 was none other than Orson the Ork
  • The man who denies Daleks can fly
  • An interview with Mr Norman
  • Gerald Slitheen, the Kasterborous butler
  • An interview with Omega/Eldrad

All of these events and more can now be heard on iTunes – view the full list of available podKasts here, or head to our podKast feed to subscribe!

The Vworping SFX Regeneration

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 08:48 PM PDT

We've had top notch on set visits, amazing 3D Covers, and now a musical cover. SFX are set to have a regeneration of their own, a new look for a new series of Doctor Who and to celebrate such fortuitous symmetry their 208# issue will be the first TARDIS sound effect cover!

Vworp vworping in a newsagents near you this Wednesday the magazine will feature exclusive on set interviews and photos (including the nifty one on the cover of Matt Smith's Atlas impression) with all the cast (and possibly the odd elbow of a crew member caught in frame) concerning the coming Series 6 of Doctor Who.

So what next? A dancing cover? A cover that's made of wool from Tom Baker's scarf? A cover that folds out into a 6ft tall replica of the TARDIS itself?

Regenerations are a bit of a dodgy process…
