All Floof-ed Up!

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 06:46 AM PDT

What can we say. We're suckers for a good conspiracy/rumour/fevered rant. With the embers still burning on the possible (but unlikely) return of the Eighth Doctor we've dug out another gem from the corners of fandom to tease and infuriate in equal measure.

Steven Moffat knows a good idea or two; in fact he's used a few of them more than once.

The idea for Blink first appeared in the then recent Doctor Who Annual as What I Did On My Christmas Holidays By Sally Sparrow only with more pants wetting chills, Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead owe much to his Continuity Errors short story from Decalog 3: Consequences and The Eleventh Hour borrowed from a previously explored idea in another Annual short story Corner of the Eye – only instead of a race called the Floofs, it's Prisoner Zero who hides away from Amy.

There's nothing wrong with re-using an idea and it seems Moffat maybe returning to the original race that hid in the corner of the eye.

The BBC America trailer unsurprisingly features a ton of footage from the America based The Impossible Astronaut alongside several flashes of what appear to be grey aliens and this piece of dialogue:

"How long have they been here?

As long as there's been something in the corner of your eye, creaking in your house or voices through a wall."

Could these Greys be Floofs…?

Miracle Day Teaser

Posted: 02 Apr 2011 04:17 AM PDT

It's been a good 10 days of teasers and trailers, and with Doctor Who out of the way naturally it is Torchwood's turn! Miracle Day hits screens in June, and to get you in the mood a short teaser trailer has been released by Starz.

There is little to be gained from rewatching this too many times – what you get here is a globe, sound effects and a newsreader commentary – but it is as intriguing as the series' premise suggests…

Meanwhile if you're new to Torchwood and are intrigued by Miracle World, check out our character bios page.

Doctor Who Fan Orchestra

Stephen Willis is calling on fans of Murray Gold's Doctor Who music to take part in an ambitious project. He explains in this video and on the Galiifrey Base Forum:

The idea is to put together a "Doctor Who fan orchestra" comprised of musicians who are fans of Doctor Who (and, more importantly, Murray Gold's scores). This would happen as an online collaboration, whereby each person would record their own part separately (with the aid of a click-track etc.), for it to be mixed afterwards.

So I am calling now for any musicians, of any level, who would be interested in using this as an expression of their appreciation of Murray Gold's music. You need to be able to play any one (or more) of the instruments in the list below, and have a reasonable-quality microphone to record your part. Don't worry if you think you're not good enough – I want the essence of the project to be that it doesn't matter how good it sounds, it should just be about fans coming together to celebrate the music of Doctor Who.

I have produced an arrangement of "I Am The Doctor" for the following instruments:

• Flute
• Oboe
• Clarinet in Bb
• Bassoon
• Horn in F (1st and 2nd parts)
• Trumpet in Bb
• Trombone
• Tuba
• Drum kit
• Violin (1st and 2nd parts)
• Viola
• Cello
• Double bass

The arrangement also includes timpani and cymbals, which will probably have to be added in electronically, and a piano part which I will be able to do.

If you play an instrument which isn't listed here, but which could play the same part as one listed, then by all means put yourself forward, e.g. if you play the cornet you could do the trumpet part, or a saxophone doubling the clarinet.
I will also need singers – again, it doesn't hugely matter how good you are at singing, but there is a choral element to the arrangement, so the more voices the better. If you take part as an instrumentalist, you can also take part as a singer.

So please, if you are interested in taking part, you can post here, or send me a PM, with the following details:
• Your name
• The instrument(s) you play
• To what level, e.g. graded exams, if applicable (this won't make any difference, I'd just find it useful to know)
• A contact email address, so I can send you the resources, e.g. sheet music and audio files

Also, if you have any questions or comments, you can post here or send me a message.
Depending on how successful this is, we may then do more pieces in the future.

Faction Paradox is a fictional time travelling cult/rebel group/organized crime syndicate, originally created by the author Lawrence Miles. The Faction's belief-system as portrayed has some similarities to voodoo, and is sometimes described as such. The family/organization were originally featured as recurring antagonists in the BBC Doctor Who Eighth Doctor Adventures novels, but have since featured in their own continuing tales. Although the Faction Paradox stories outside of the BBC Books share situations and characters in common with the Doctor Who universe, the two continuities are presented as similar but distinct. Moths Ate My Interview

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 11:01 PM PDT

Website The Peverettphile has recently published a very interesting interview with comedian Toby Hadoke.

For those who are not aware of Toby's work (I speak only to those who have been living in a box in the Himalayas for the last ten years and have only just reintegrated back into society), he not only wrote and performed the popular stand up piece Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf - which is a brilliant look at one man growing up loving Doctor Who – but also contributes to Doctor Who Magazine as well as various television and radio shows.

Within the interview, Toby talks about his stand up show and how it has changed over the years with various new materials. He also talks about his new book that he co wrote with Robert Shearman called Running through corridors, in which the pair sit down and separately watch episodes of Doctor Who from beginning to end. The book chronicles their correspondence about the episodes as they back and forth with their different opinions. Think A Writers Tale meets Doctor Who Magazine's The Time Team. Toby mentions how the book came to be written by the two:

"We became friends when he came to see "Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf". We started meeting for drinks and he suggested the idea to me. I jumped at it but never thought it'd actually happen."

The interview is short and sweet but also has some very interesting factoids for you to find out. For example, did you know that Toby has his initials drawn into the artwork for the Target novelisation of the 1987 story Dragonfire? No? You do now!

Head over to thepeverettphile.blogspot.com to read the interview in full.

BBC America Series 6 Trailer Breakdown

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 08:30 PM PDT

So we've already analysed the UK trailer for Series 6, now it seems only right to take a look at BBC America's one in better detail. For this breakdown we've left out a few of the scenes we've seen before to concentrate on what's new.

The trailer opens with a few familiar clips from the UK trailer with the Doctor narrating: "Ever look in a mirror and think you're seeing a whole other world? Well this time, it's not an illusion."
