| Get Sonic and Iconized - A New Sonic Newsdriver and an I-CON Doctor Who Panel Posted: 15 Apr 2011 04:40 PM PDT
But before next Saturday comes, this Saturday (April 16, 2011), or for some already, today, I will be speaking on a panel at I-CON 30 from 3pm to 4pm (EDT) (in room 111 in the Javits Lecture Hall at SUNY, Stony Brook, NY). The panel is titled, '21st Century Doctor Who.' Ken Deep of Doctor Who: Podshock will also be on the panel. The panel is being organized by Docking Bay 516 for I-CON. So if you are attending I-CON this year, be sure to attend this panel. In the meantime, the latest episode of The Sonic Newsdriver is available. Along with the usual Doctor Who related news, it features a 'live' interview with Anthony S Burdge @MythicDocWho while he was in line for the special premiere showing of the first two episodes of the new series in NYC which took place on Monday, April 11th. Speaking of The Sonic Newsdriver, the companion app for the podcast is already available in the Apple iTunes App Store for iOS devices (App Store link) and on AppBrain for Android devices, it is now also in the Amazon Appstore for Android devices. See details here.

| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:34 AM PDT The viral video sensations the The Fine Brothers, who have a great comedy schtick in recapping some vast subject in 6 minutes (my favourite are the endings of TV shows), take a shot at the 47 year history of Doctor Who in 6 minutes. Several million points for excellent research on the origins of the term "regeneration". Sadly they lose several points saying UNIT always stood for Unified Intelligence Taskforce. But excellent effort. | ||
| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 06:10 AM PDT We all like lists. Lists make sense of the senseless, impose boundaries on our geek filled love and give us a chance to praise those esoteric sections of Doctor Who that would probably pass others by – it's like a nerdy Pay it Forward system. When it comes to monsters everyone has their favourites: Daleks, Cybermen, Autons, Zygons, Sontarans and the peerless Weeping Angels – only now there's something else creeping to the summit of your geek lists. Something that's been here for a long time, and which we'll see for the first time in The Impossible Astronaut. Hold your breath, don't get cornered and prey that it didn't see you; The Silence has you now. I for one would like to welcome our new overlords and so too would the Daily Mail, who've complied a lowdown on the mysterious suited creatures. In a way they tie into all our preconceptions of what an alien would look like, the grey bulbous heads, the shadowy 'there already here!" paranoia and the classic G man suits all suggest previous attempts to categorise Area 51′s finest. Steven Moffat, the creator of The Silence, drew his inspiration from these and another classical source:
Edvard Munch's 1893 painting of despair was like Van Gogh's work in Vincent and the Doctor a warning from art history (it seems all artists do in Moffat's universe is warn everyone of impending doom.) Munch may claim to have been the first human to lay his Norwegian eyes on The Silence but Matt Smith can't wait for all of us to see them:

Have you ever wanted to be on a Doctor Who DVD commentary? Do you have burning questions about the Sylvester McCoy era of Doctor Who? Well 2Entertain's latest competition is for you. Record a question about either The Happiness Patrol, The Greatest Show In The Galaxy or Dragonfire, upload it to the Doctor Who DVD's Soundcloud page and, if you're selected they'll put your question on the upcoming commentary recordings for these stories. Full information can be found here. This is a brilliant idea for "crowdsourcing" material for commentaries, especially for an era which has tended to use the same personalities (McCoy, Aldred, Cartmel) again and again on the DVD commentaries. It might get the commentators to look at things slightly differently. It's a shame they didn't do this sooner—the Davison era DVD commentaries really would have benefited by this!

| UK Astronaut Scheduling Confirmed Posted: 14 Apr 2011 11:08 PM PDT The BBC has confirmed the scheduling details for both The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon, the episodes that comprise the first adventure in the 2011 run of Doctor Who! Doctor Who Series 6 will kick off with The Impossible Astronaut on BBC One on Saturday 23 April at 6.00-6.45pm, quashing our earlier speculation that scary moments in the new series trailer that lead to broadcast of a cut version on the digital CBBC channel would result in a later broadcast time, and perhaps a restoration of the 7pm start time in the UK. Meanwhile part two, Day of the Moon, concludes the adventure with a mammoth 60 minute time slot, running on the following Saturday 30 April in the 6.00-7.00pm timeslot on BBC One! The Steven Moffat-penned episodes star Matt Smith as the Doctor, Karen Gillan as Amy Pond and Arthur Darvill as Rory, with Alex Kingston reprising River Song. Mark Sheppard and Stuart Milligan guest as Canton Everett Delaware III and Richard Nixon, respectively. | ||

| Posted: 14 Apr 2011 08:48 PM PDT Just how old is the Doctor? He's been 730, 759, 650 and more recently he's been telling all and sundry he's 900 years-old- but as age old Philosopher Dr. Henry Jones once said: "Its not the age, its the mileage." Fantasy writer Neil Gaiman (author some little-read tome called The Graveyard Book, as well as Doctor Who Series 6 episode The Doctor's Wife) believes there has been no better person than Matt Smith at making us feel each of those 900 years. Gaiman told InnerSPACE that he never doubts Matt Smith's interpretation of the Doctors accumulated wisdom and world weariness:
Gaiman wryly recalls the skepticism about the choice of the then 27 year-old Smith to play the Doctor, who, so far is the youngest actor to portray the last of the Time Lord's-pipping Fifth Doctor Peter Davison by two years.

| Review: Industrial Evolution - CD Posted: 14 Apr 2011 08:14 PM PDT Manufacturer: Big Finish Productions Writ ten By: Eddie Robson RRP: &ound;14.99 Release Date: 31st March 2011
Reviewed by: Matthew Davis for Doctor Who Online Review Posted: 15th April 2011 The Industrial Revolution is not a new subject for Doctor Who or for the Sixth Doctor. Having encountered luddites in The Mark of the Rani, the Doctor now gets entangled with all the cogs and machinery in this somewhat disappointing end to the latest Thomas Brewster trilogy. The story begins with Brewster working at a Brass mill in 19th century Lancashire, left there by the Doctor after his request to return to a more normal life. Unknown to Brewster, the Doctor is not too far away, keeping an eye not just on him, but the mill’s mysterious owner Samuel Belfrage. After a series of gruesome accidents, it’s not long before there is real trouble at the mill as the nature of Mr Belfrage’s business begins to wreak havoc. While the play is not a bad one, you cannot help but feel the sense of missed opportunity, particularly with Brewster. John Pickard is as ever charming and rascally as Brewster, but the character is once again simply scheming with the people not on the Doctor’s side, a theme that has occurred throughout this trilogy. Separating Brewster from the Doctor once again, makes you question whether he was actually needed as the story could have worked just as easily without him. Colin Baker and Maggie Stables continue to show why The Sixth Doctor and Evelyn Smythe are a perfect Doctor and companion team and the supporting cast do give it their all but the story seems a little stretched in places. The villains of the piece are almost steampunk in nature and with some excellent sound design and musical score make very effectively creepy antagonists. There are some interesting ideas about our over dependence on technology as well as an obligatory class issue as Brewster engages the factory workers to strike, which amounts to padding at best. Ultimately though, it is a story that doesn’t really go anyway, although the intriguing nature of Brewster’s departure leaves an opportunity open for him to return. I hope it is a far more interesting affair, as the character does have a great deal of potential to develop further than the artful dodger persona he seems to be stuck as. Industrial Evolution is not a complete failure but it is certainly not one of Big Finish’s strongest plays.

| Posted: 14 Apr 2011 06:26 PM PDT Imagine living in the US (if you don't already), relaxing on your sofa while enjoying one of those extra-long Doctor Who marathons BBC America sometimes runs. It's time for a commercial break, and you're too lazy to pop into the kitchen for a quick snack, so you sit through the endless flow of hair product adverts, movie trailers, and car insurance spots. Imagine your reaction if, in the middle of all that, you see this: If your imagined reaction is one of utter bewilderment, you've just pictured yourself experiencing what this writer lived through back in December during BBC America's run-up to A Christmas Carol. Honestly, I'd have written about this sooner, except for some reason I've spent the past few months believing I already did. So if the above video is brand new to you, you must be wondering what the cardiovascular-fluid-covered demonic location it's all about. You can click on the following link to www.wheresthetardis.com and find out for yourself, or you can just stay right here on this article and I'll tell you. For the last few months, as part of the promotion for Doctor Who Series 6, BBC America has been running a competition for US fans to build their very own TARDISes, with a few conditions: You must be a resident of one of the original 48 states (sorry, Alaskans, Hawaiians, and everyone else), you must include photos (okay, yeah, that's a given), and you must cleverly place your TARDIS in a public location! Inspired by an increasing number of public TARDIS appearances over the past few years on both sides of the pond, such as the MIT rooftop prank from last August, this "Where's the TARDIS?" competition promises you, if you're the winner, a huge Doctor Who screening event in your town for yourself and 50 friends, and nearly $3000 worth of Who DVDs (Yes, $3000)… in other words, every single Doctor Who television story currently available in the US. And you don't have to build an average, full-sized TARDIS either. Many entrants are getting creative with TARDIS suitcases, clothing, kites… go ahead and think outside the box (sorry, couldn't resist)! My personal favourite is this entrant from the state of Maine who made his police box entirely out of balloons! Wheresthetardis.com has hundreds of other examples from those who have already submitted if you need some ideas to get you started. The competition ends May 15th, which means you have one month from today to grow your time machine and submit it before it's too late! Check the official rules for more! | ||
