| Posted: 16 Apr 2011 07:59 AM PDT Available in May will be three t-shirts that all carry a stylish Doctor Who related picture on them, adding to an ever-increasing list of stylish Whovian attire. The first is for Adipose Industries (so you can pretend that you work for them maybe? Perhaps you also pretended to work for them while undercover in Partners in Crime..?) and is available in matt black. The other two t-shirts go slightly old school. The first is a picture of Davros and three Daleks with the threatening "OBEY" stamped over the image. It's Davros at the beginning of his fight with the Doctor, when they first met all the way back in Genesis of the Daleks - oh so many years ago now. The final t-shirt sees the mighty Cybermen army taking to the streets of London as they try to take over the population in The Invasion. How lucky we were that the Second Doctor was on hand to help. All three items of clothing are available to pre-order for £16.99 and come in sizes from small to extra large; they'll begin shipping out from 1st May 2011. | ||
| Posted: 16 Apr 2011 07:16 AM PDT It's less than a week before Doctor Who returns to our screens with Series 6, and as per tradition the broadsheets have gone all insightful and produced an extended profile of everyone's favourite ginger Amy Pond aka Karen Gillan – who has let slip she'd most like to emulate hairy, motor mouthed American comedian Robin Willams. Letting the genie out of the bottle (oh very good – Ed) Gillan, told the Daily Telegraph that the Insomnia star is one of the actors whose career she'd most like to have:
Speaking of different voices Gillan has been more than impressed (if not a little overawed) by Who fans on both sides of the Atlantic. On a promotional trip to the Big Apple, Gillan was stunned at the awaiting reception:
The responsibility of being such a recognisable face to many children across the country however is that she tries to forget:
Check the full feature article for more on Gillan's career, her hopes for the future and what she and Matt get up to everyday on and off set…

| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 07:15 PM PDT Could John Simm return to Doctor Who as the Master? That's the impression we get from series chief Steven Moffat, who at the recent screening in New York was asked about this very possibility. With Doctor Who Series 6 approaching and talk of the Silence and the Cybermen it is great to be reminded this show is bigger than the next series – there is a wealth of history to refer back to, including the Master's ability to cheat death. When asked about the possibility of former Life on Mars star John Simm making a return as the Master, Moffat recalled Simm's previous comments on the prospect of a return.
Which is great news, and probably something that only requires a script – after all, Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes co-creator Matthew Graham is on board this time around with the two parter The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People. We don't think it would take much to persuade John Simm to return… What do you think? Are you ready to see the Master return to Doctor Who – and if so, how exactly do you think he survived the events of The End of Time?

Reviewed By: Dale Who for Doctor Who Online Review Posted: 16th April 2011 The Classic Series Auton stories get a paired release in this two disc set from the BBC / 2|Entertain. Spearhead from Space: Special Edition Starting off the Third Doctor's era is Spearhead From Space; and with the show now in colour and set on Earth in contemporary Britain, the whole feel of the programme changes radically. As with previous older releases, it looks like the recording has been cleaned up considerably, and the print is fresh, sharp, and looking and sounding first class. Spearhead from Space also benefits from being on location and film, as opposed to the studio based scenes and with the usual videotape recordings. The story looks more expensive and runs more smoothly as a result. A swarm of meteorites land on Earth drawing attention from UNIT and a new and deadly alien menace emerges; and at the same time an old blue Police Box lands in the middle of Oxley Woods, and a strange man with an odd metabolism emerges and passes out... Featuring an amazing debut from the unstoppably charismatic Jon Pertwee, a perfectly pitched and suitably sceptical Liz Shaw arriving on the scene with Hugh Burden being amazingly creepy as the not-quite-what-he-seems Channing. Also missing shoes, overly sticky blood platelets, and a Hoover 913 Commercial... The Spearhead from Space Special Features focus, understandably, on the changes that Doctor Who as a programme was going through. Special Features: Down To Earth - A clever look at the problems facing the show at the end of the Troughton era, how it narrowly avoided being cancelled, and how a new team in front of and behind the camera and the advent of colour television turned the show's fortunes around. It's easy to see the level on love and passion for Doctor Who here, especially from Terrance Dicks and the late - and much missed - Barry Letts. A smart set up to keep the narrative flowing, Down To Earth works very well indeed. Regenerations - A closer look at the introduction of colour and how it affected Doctor Who. From colour test transmissions to getting round the tricky problem that colour cameras didn't replicate the show's "howlaround" title sequence effects, this enlightening little documentary demonstrates all the changes behind the scenes that the entertained Who viewer never knew anything about. UNIT Recruitment Film - Serving as a timely, if unintended tribute to the recently deceased Nicholas Courtney, this spoof film about the life of a soldier in UNIT now mixes the humour with a twinge of sadness. Narrated by Adam Woodyatt (EastEnders' Ian Beale) and the aforementioned Brigadier himself, it's a short, warm tribute to the Earth-bound Pertwee years with the UNIT family. Trailers - The BBC Two trails for the mid 1990s repeats for Spearhead From Space, and one for BBC Two's Doctor Who Night; the latter featuring a traumatised child on the sofa and evil possessed goldfish. Fun fluff, if nothing else, good for raising a smile. Commentaries - With this release there are two commentaries available, one with Caroline John (Liz Shaw, who debuts in this story) and Nicholas Courtney, and one with story producer Derrick Sherwin and script editor Terrance Dicks. Trailer - The TARDIS, with the Fifth Doctor, Tegan and Turlough on board, is heading for a rather bumpy arrival on the planet Frontios. Te rror of the Autons: It's the return of the Plastic People! In a story with another few firsts, smart and sassy Liz Shaw has been replaced by small and screaming Jo Grant (Katy Manning), as Terror of the Autons heralds the debut of one of Doctor Who's major player villains; the only person who's managed to cause the Doctor to regenerate not once but twice... fellow Time Lord and all round bad egg; The Master. Here played by the absolutely glorious Roger Delgado, this incarnation was impeccably mannered, unstoppably suave... and as black hearted as they come. UNIT has also expanded with Mike Yates (Richard Franklin) on the crew, and there's some memorably monstrous moments from the Nestenes causing pandemonium once more. Doctor Who stalwart (and later to be Davros), Michael Wisher puts in a great performance alongside the major cast members, but the scenes are stolen by the ingenious ways in which the writers came up with to kill people... notably scarily faceless Policemen and murderous clammy black plastic sofas… In a step beyond its coloured VHS release, the BBC / 2|Entertain release has been fully restored so the colour looks a lot more natural this time around. Again the restoration looks pin sharp, with top quality sound and visuals. The story justifies the amount of love and attention given to the release, and it's all top quality entertainment paired with it's earlier Auton outing. Special Features: Life On Earth - Another, wider look at Doctor Who being set on Earth and it's implications. This time around there's talk around the newer, post-2005 Doctor Who as well as the influences and origins of the Russell T. Davies era Autons. It's a very interesting and entertaining documentary, with a really clever visual style, some really honest interviews, and again, it all goes to show the level of commitment shown to Doctor Who past and present. The Doctor's Moriarty - A look at The Master, who turns up to meddle in the Doctor's affairs for the very first time in this story. Quite naturally this little retrospective focusses mostly on Roger Delgado's era of The Master, but mention is made of the Master's later incarnations as well, right up to John Simm's recent outings as the character. A decent featurette looking at the origins of the character, uses and overuses, and what made Roger Delgado so good as the Doctor's Nemesis. Plastic Fantastic - A short look at the Autons, their creation, uses and the society they were unleashed upon, with writers and historians shedding some light on the Nestenes' favourite substance to inhabit. With a highly entertaining Commentary from Barry Letts, Nicholas Courtney and Katy Manning, the usual info text option to divulge trivia, audience figures and bloopers and the same Coming Soon Trailer for Frontios, this rounds off an appallingly titled, but absolutely stunning Auton double feature that should feature in anyone's collection. Brilliant. just remember DVDs are made of plastic...

| Posted: 15 Apr 2011 05:53 PM PDT The recent trip to the USA on a big promotional push saw Doctor Who stars Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill meeting fans in various settings. One such settings was the Barnes & Noble: Fifth Avenue store in New York City on Friday April 8, 2011, where they autographed copies of the Series 5 DVD box set. Curiously, and for no apparent reason other than it was Friday, fans serenaded the Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory with a special Doctor Who themed parody – if indeed such a piece of music can be parodied – of Rebecca Black's "Friday". Can't think why The Cure's "Friday I'm In Love" wouldn't have been a better option, but there you go. Doctor Who Series 6 kicks off on BBC America on Saturday April 23 at 9/8c. Thanks to Rory, and the Internet legend that is Rebecca Black. | ||
| Relative Dimension in Cyberspace Posted: 15 Apr 2011 04:27 PM PDT Just when you thought they'd run out of household objects to turn into TARDISes, someone came up with the best idea yet – the police box as personal computer. It makes the cookie jar look like a shoe box. It makes the door frame look one-dimensional. It makes the levitating desktop gizmo look like… actually, that's still pretty cool. But you get the point. This TARDIS PC case mod, seen here at Gadgets and Gizmos, is currently just a prototype, so it won't be for sale for a while, but as the BBC has given the OK to commission this product, we've no doubt it'll hit online and perhaps physical stores eventually. It's turned on by pressing down on the TARDIS beacon on top, causing the beacon to light up. There's been no word on whether there are vworpy noises to go with it, but that should definitely be added to the designer's to-do list if it hasn't been done. The DVD drive and the front USB ports are hidden behind the doors, with the option of more ports on the customizable and very computer-like back. The detail on the exterior is phenomenal, right down to the door handles and the St. John's logo. The whole thing's apparently quite heavy thanks to the aluminum and steel used to put it together. The interior is up to you – you can choose from bigger or smaller (amounts of memory) on the inside, as well any other specifications you deem desirable. In other words, you can either pay a large sum of money for this baby, or a smaller large sum of money. Specifically what that large sum might be is for the moment unknown; in fact, we're not even quite sure who the vendor will be, or even who made it! Cue the "watch this space" cliche. In the meantime, imagine just how awesome it would be to have a TARDIS computer with a separate TARDIS USB hub plugged into it! |
