Ask Questions for DVD Extras!

Posted: 17 Apr 2011 05:56 AM PDT

2|entertain have announced on Twitter details of a very interesting competition that they are running that could result with a question of your choice being on one of the Doctor Who DVD's being read out by…you!

It's really very simple, all you have to do is go to the following link: http://me.lt/1o0L6 and you can record a question for one (or all three) of the classic Sylvester McCoy stories Dragonfire, The Happiness Patrol and The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.

All you need to do is state your name and where you're from (literally name and town, no addresses as they've got a lot to pack in to the commentary!) and then ask whatever you want to know about the episodes. The best ones will be put onto the actual DVD commentary for the forthcoming releases of the stories. Pickled in time like gherkins in a jar!

Make sure that you speak nice and clearly when recording your question as a mumbling and incomprehensible question will most likely not be what the producers are after! Entrants must be aged 18 years and over and finally the submissions will close on 22nd April so that means that you have to rush over to the site now (what are you still doing here?!) and ask the cleverest question you can think of.

Right now you could be thinking of the most important Doctor Who related question ever asked. It's time to be brilliant…

Doctor Who Update

Posted: 17 Apr 2011 12:52 AM PDT

For anyone looking to subscribe or re-subscribe, we thought it might be a good idea to let you know which Doctors will be appearing in which of the upcoming main range, monthly releases.

As you will see from the production details on the site, Sylvester McCoy's latest batch of adventures take us up until September 2011. Following that, from October to December 2011, Paul McGann returns as the Eighth Doctor, with Julie Cox as new companion Mary Shelley. We were hoping to make this announcement exclusively in the pages of Doctor Who Magazine, but unfortunately, an over-enthusiastic cast member from one of these productions, included the news in his personal podcast!

'Once comedian Mitch Benn realized he'd leaked unwisely, he apologized and very kindly removed the section from his podcast,' explains Nick Briggs. 'But you know the internet, once the news is out there, it's out there! We'll be announcing the story titles and the rest of the cast details in DWM, but we thought we might as well announce the return of Julie Cox as Mary Shelley here!'

You may remember that the character of Mary Shelley originally featured in the Doctor Who story The Company of Friends. If you haven't heard that one yet, you might like to catch up with it now. And look out for this week's BF Podcast, in which Julie and Paul will be giving us a teaser of their new adventures.

Following on from the Eighth Doctor adventures, January 2012 sees the beginning of a new mini-season of Sixth Doctor adventures starring Colin Baker. They run from January to March.

'We're not revealing which companion Colin is travelling with yet,' says Nick. 'But brace yourselves for something new and exciting.'

Watch Till You Drop!

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 11:53 PM PDT

It seems that this year in Doctor Who land there are enough promotional videos for Series 6 to make up the length of an entire episode.  And most of them seem to be coming from BBC America, which makes perfect sense given that in the US, while wildly popular among cult sci-fi fans, the show has yet to come close the respected status it has in the UK.  Anyway, here's a big roundup of vids from BBC America and others that you might not have seen yet…

If I Had a Time Machine

The TARDIS trio (Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill) have all been asked the very Whovian question of when they would go if they had a means of transcending the fourth dimension.  While some of their responses, like Arthur's, are sensible enough, others are a little more on the unusual(ly awesome) side:

Matt's answer to this question, at the time of writing, is nowhere to be seen, though BBC America claims it exists.  One can only assume they've yet to post it.  However, there is a rather interesting bonus video where Executive Producer Steven Moffat gives his take!

47 Years in 6 Minutes

This video was fashioned by the rather eccentric Fine Brothers, intended to be an incredibly fast-paced summary of the entire televised series from An Unearthly Child to A Christmas Carol (with a perhaps unintended focus on the post-Eccleston era).  Personally, we wouldn't recommend  that you show this video to any potential new fans who aren't geeks, but if you yourself feel you need a refresher course before The Impossible Astronaut, here you go:

Eleven Ways to Sonic

This one's another BBC America creation, a compilation of scenes from the Matt Smith run of eleven uses for the sonic screwdriver:

Sadly, as it's only the Eleventh Doctor's episodes that are covered, there are still plenty of excellent actions the sonic screwdriver can perform that have fallen by the wayside.  Resonating concrete, anyone?

And More!

We've already posted these ones before, but if you've just returned from a vacation on Saturn here's some other great Series 6 promotional vids you can't miss!

I can personally affirm from experience last week that the Doctor Who Insider Part Two clip from BBC America is an effective way to explain the concept of regeneration to new fans who have no previous experience with the show, without having to actually say anything!  Just in case you were wondering.

The Impossible Astronaut airs this Saturday, April 23rd at 6pm on BBC One and BBC One HD in the UK, 9/8 central on BBC America in the US, and 8/7 central on SPACE in Canada.

(With thanks to Rory. No, not that one.)

Put Some Clothes On!

Posted: 16 Apr 2011 09:14 PM PDT

David Tennant and Catherine Tate's appearance on Friday evening was scheduled to promote their roles in the West End production of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, but ended up revealing the depths to which some Doctor Who fans will descend just to get an autograph.

If you were the chap that accosted mild-mannered David Tennant in a gym recently, you should be very, very ashamed of yourself…

'I was washing my hair, facing the wall, when I was tapped on the shoulder so already it's quite inappropriate,' the actor told BBC One chat show host Graham Norton.

'I turned round and there was another naked man standing there with a piece of paper.

'And I think "if you can't see how inappropriate this is I am just going to have to play along" so I took the paper, which is slowly becoming mulch, and carved my name in it.'

This really is a case of taking hero worship – or perhaps parental point scoring – to an unacceptable level. Sadly it isn't the first time I've heard stories like this, although often the they involve premiership footballers and soon-to-be ex-girlfriends.

The fact is, people on TV (and in sport) are just the same as us, flesh and blood, and they all deserve their private time. Let's hope David's future encounters with fans are more appropriate!

(One last thing – yes, it's a tame headline for such a story; you should see the ones we dropped, which included a variation on "The Pen is Mightier than the Sword"…)
