An Impossible Reaction!

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 08:03 AM PDT

Reaction to The Impossible Astronaut continues to 99% positive, with only a few rogue elements making a noise that can only be compared with "attention-seeking".

With a show this inventive the reviewers have had to upgrade their word-weapons firing such praiseworthy mortars as The Independent's overview which started with a 'bigger, bolder, better' introduction and went on to attempt to find the significance in everything (don't fall for that Moffat trap!):

"Showrunner Steven Moffat wanted The Impossible Astronaut and next week's episode Day of the Moon to feel like a series finale and he has certainly achieved this. There are thrills aplenty and the questions keep coming up with more of the same to follow throughout the series."

Speaking of Moffat, Craveonline were so impressed with the series long arc laid out in The Impossible Astronaut that they want him to write every episode (an entire season like that and The Indepedent would implode.)

The review went on to hurl garlands of praise at the cast with Alex Kingston (ER) recieving most for showing a hitherto unseen vulnerable side to River Song – and a more than welcome flirty one too:

"Most of the time, River kind of irritates me. But here she shows off a far more vulnerable side, first by grieving for the Doctor and later in her confession to Rory that she dreads the day that the Doctor won't remember her. Those are small touches, but it gives some insight into River that we didn't really have before. And she finally seems like something more than a potential "Mary Sue" character."

The Belefast Telegraph, while full of praise echoed SFX's concerns for the casual viewer, who, if they came in from the sun might think their sun addled brains had made the whole thing up out:

"While watching this I occasionally felt that little concession was being made to the casual viewer. Lots of references were being made to the events of last year and beyond which may be lost on someone not avidly following the show. Similarly I felt this episode may have been a little too complex for the younger members of the audience, with the plot moving forward by more subtle explanations than obvious ones."

So in an attempt to be more obvious i'll end this round-up with a cliffhanger – well a disection of the multiply cliffhangers from Zap2it – which is just as fun:

"Is Amy Pond pregnant with a human baby that she's going to carry to term, give birth to and tote around through time and space? This is honestly the last thing I saw coming — or at least it was until she started clutching her stomach.

And, more importantly, will Matt Smith be the last man to ever play the Doctor? The series has always managed to skirt around casting and storyline dilemmas with the eternally useful time travel loophole, but this seems unavoidable. As of now, the Doctor will die, in his current form, in 2011."

We'll have more reviews rounded up as soon as we find them!

Gillan on Pond

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 05:24 AM PDT

Just like pretty much every other aspect of The Impossible Astronaut, Karen Gillan started off Series 6/Season 32 on top form!  In an interview with The Scotsman that took place during the filming of The Curse of the Black Spot (the episode after next), Karen confirmed what many Kasterborous readers and forumers have already suggested – that she's taking a slightly different approach to her performance as Amy Pond this year:

"With the last series, I wanted to keep her guarded.  She doesn't like to show her emotions because she wants to be strong.  But in this series, there are cracks starting to form in that exterior and we're starting to see other aspects of her.

"Actually, in one episode we've just filmed, it was really difficult because it was about something I've never experienced before.  I didn't feel as if I could relate to it because it's never happened to me.  I had to go and talk to quite a few people so I could gauge how that would feel.  It was a massive thing that happens, and I can't tell you what that was!"

Hmmm… something Karen's never experienced before.  And something that several other people apparently can give advice about.  Is Amy going to have her baby soon?

Karen also told The Scotsman where she would steer the series if she had control of where and when each episode went, although the time period sounds a bit like the two-part opener already in progress…

"I always think I'd like to go back to the 1960s.  But that wouldn't be very exciting for Doctor Who, because what would the monster be?"

Er… the Silence?

Watch Karen (and Matt, and Arthur, and Alex) in Day of the Moon, Saturday at 6PM on BBC One, 9/8c on BBC America, or 8/7c on Space.

Matt on ‘Astronaut’ Twist

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 04:17 AM PDT

Were you as bewildered and shocked and horrified as we were to see our hero gunned down by a walking spacesuit in last Saturday's The Impossible Astronaut?  Matt Smith wasn't.

In a very, very short conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Matt spoke in a manner that suggested he was interested but not particularly affected when he learned of his character's impending sort-of demise:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was it like to read the scene in which your character died?
MATT SMITH: [Laughs] Well, as with every actor in a long running series, I guess you go through a mixture of fear and intrigue.  But then he came back really soon, so that was very exciting.

Matt also confirmed that the resolution to the 'death of the Doctor' story arc will definitely happen this season.

"…I think it's really bold storytelling, to kill off a main character early on, especially that character.  It's the sort of territory we want to be investigating dramatically."

In other words, he thinks it's cool, but he just doesn't seem quite as excited by the concept as certain residents of Kasterborous Towers (er… me) are.  Perhaps it's because he's just too overwhelmed by what promises to be an even bigger twist at the end of A Good Man Goes to War in six weeks' time.  Here was his reaction to THAT, as related by Karen Gillan:

"…it was only at the read-through that Steven Moffat took me, Matt and Arthur [Darvill] into the corridor to read the proper [ending of the episode] on his laptop.  We then all paced around going, 'oh my God!'  It's brilliant and viewers will just have to tune in to find out more."

After learning what the end of spring holds for himself and his co-stars, and being absolutely speechless as a result, it seems Matt Smith now finds something as trivial as dying in the first ten minutes of Episode One to be just another day at the offices of Moffat, Inc.  We can't wait for Episode Seven; can you?

You'll have to watch Episode Two, a.k.a. Day of the Moon, first.  It'll be on BBC One at 6PM, BBC America at 9/8c, and Space at 8/7c, all this Saturday.

A Beard No More

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 03:11 AM PDT

It was with great relief that I shaved off that beard on Easter Sunday. Great relief, three razors, and a skin like I'd been grated. Here are the stages:

The beard on its last day (Day 47).

Looking scarily like my Dad, with a trimmed chin version. (The Brit Superman t-shirt was a gift from James Bacon, and, he says, available in high street shops.)

Just the rather louche moustache.

And this is me. The final total raised for Shelter was £1,602.28. You should all feel very proud of yourselves. That included £146 from the kind people at Eastercon (and thanks to Flick for doing the collecting at the auction), George Martin's lovely doubled contribution, and donations from Gideon Hallett, Matthew Hyde, Matthew Kilburn, the novelists Diana Rowland, Tricia Sullivan and Adam Christopher, Paul Cockburn, Stacey Frost, the SF editor Jo Fletcher, Madeleine Flint, Sarah Lovett and my fellow UK comicker Jamie McKelvie.

Thanks for all being so kind. I'm never going to do anything beard-related again. And now I'm going to go and eat some soup. Cheerio!

The Undiscovered Country

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 03:09 AM PDT

Like everybody, I was completely shocked and a great deal shaken by the news of Elisabeth Sladen's passing last week. Through Doctor Who she's been a part of my life for as long as I can remember; and it's hard imagining a world without her.

Through Doctor Who and the SJA she's always been there. It's no secret that Sarah Jane Smith is my all time favourite companion. I doubt that will ever change. She's such a fantastic character, fleshed out magnificently by Sladen in what I believe to be some of the very best adventures of Doctor Who's initial 26 year run.

When it was announced she would be returning to the series, 30 years after she originally left, I was over the moon. Forget the return of the Cybermen that same year, or rumours of an all out Dalek-Cyberman war during the season finale, it was that little moment in episode three, "School Reunion" that had me most excited of all. Sarah Jane! Back on my telly! In proper Doctor Who.

I cried, you know, during those closing moments of "School Reunion". Not just because those closing scenes outside the TARDIS between Sladen and David Tennant were so brilliantly written, but because, in my gut, I feared that was it: The end of Sarah Jane Smith. The character walked off into the sunset with K9 and I feared we'd never see her again - and it broke my heart.

I needn't have worried. Rumours soon started (and with them, so did this blog) that Sarah Jane was coming back. First, maybe, in Torchwood. Then... Sarah Jane Investigates! Months later, the name was changed, but the spin-off arrived on a New Years Eve afternoon over on BBC One. It was rather good, wasn't it?

In a world where children's television is vanishing fast, thanks in part to television executives who don't understand its importance, The Sarah Jane Adventures is such an important (and iconic) series for its channel, and audience. It's not easy getting intelligent programming onto your children's TV screens. Think yourselves lucky. We've had 4 series worth of absolutely fantastic drama-adventure. No dumbing down, or filmed cheap as chips lowest common denominator.

A lot of people are worried that series 5 won't be broadcast. Don't be. Russell T Davies knows, as does Sladen's family, how much the world loves Sarah Jane Smith. Be patient, and your patience shall be rewarded.

As for what comes next... Some fans want to see the series mark the death of Sarah Jane Smith. I feel this is fundermentally the wrong thing to do. Not because children can't cope with or understand the death of the character (they are intelligent enough to do both) but because... well, it isn't fair. Consider this: the character has been handled by three very different production teams (Barry Letts/Terrance Dicks, Philip Hinchcliffe/Robert Holmes, and Russell T Davies) - is it fair that any one person therefore decides the ultimate fate of the character?

Here's what I think should happen: End the series with the episodes already shot. Have Sarah Jane look up to the sky one last time, surrounded by her children, giving one last fantasticly beautiful speech. Roll credits.

The open-ended conclusion then allows fans to take control of her destiny. You're free to imagine what comes next. Maybe she dies the very next week in a heroic battle against any race of evil. Maybe she continues to live a fantastic life, and dies in bed an old lady in her 90s surrounded by family, friends, and a certain Time Lord. Or perhaps, maybe, she simply lives forever - Sarah Jane Smith immortal, and undefeated.

I quite like the idea of that last one, myself.

Whatever, CBBC's Barney Harwood is right: We should celebrate what a person did, instead of being upset about what a person didn't do. Celebrate Elisabeth Sladen. Buy the DVDs of her classic Doctor Who adventures, or tune into the SJA whenever they're on. Keep those posters of her up on your wall, or on your desktop. Write on the forums, and visit sites like this. Keep the memory going - but most important of all, do it with a smile on your face.

The ultimate tribute to Elisabeth Sladen, then. She isn't gone - and she never will be.

Thanks for reading.
