Hand of Fear Tribute

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 07:49 AM PDT

BBC Four is to air The Hand of Fear, the final episode of classic Doctor Who to feature Sarah Jane Smith as companion, as a tribute to Elisabeth Sladen who died last week.

The Hand of Fear sees the Doctor (Tom Baker) and Sarah landing in a quarry, and after avoiding certain death they discover a fossilised hand that is able to move. After taking control of Sarah and using her to cause a nuclear meltdown, the hand regenerates itself, absorbing all of the radiation thus avoiding meltdown.

Now regenerated, the hand belongs to a Kastrian, Eldrad, who wishes to return to her own planet and rebuild her lost civilization. However she isn't being entirely honest with the Doctor and Sarah…

After leaving Kastria, Sarah decides that she's had enough of being taken for a ride by aliens, kidnapped, hypnotised and teleported, and decides that she wants a bath. Collecting her belongings together, and hoping for the Doctor to talk her round, it seems that her timing has been perfect.

The Doctor, for so long tied to Earth, has been summoned to Gallifrey, and must leave Sarah Jane behind. The Hand of Fear features an understated departure that is referred to on many levels in 2006′s School Reunion. It's an optimistic one, and one that will leave a lump in your throat.

Reported on Twitter by the Radio Times the four-part serial (originally broadcast October 2nd – October 23rd 1976) by Bob Baker and Dave Martin will air on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th May, with two episodes broadcast on each evening. We'll let you know the scheduled times when they're revealed.

Revisitations 2 Discs 3-4: Carnival Of Monsters

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 07:08 AM PDT

Doctor Who: Carnival of MonstersAfter the triumph of Revisitations Set 1 comes the eagerly anticipated second volume, this time around containing the Patrick Troughton escapade The Seeds Of Death, the Jon Pertwee romp Carnival Of Monsters and Peter Davison's dark adventure Resurrection Of The Daleks.

To give the set the coverage it deserves this review has been split into three parts. The Seeds Of Death started the set off well even though it had limited amount of extras so was hoping that Carnival Of Monsters would have a bit more meat to it.

The Doctor and Jo take the TARDIS on a test flight and arrive on a cargo ship, the SS Bernice, that appears to be crossing the Indian Ocean in 1926 but is in fact trapped inside a miniscope "a banned peepshow of a miniaturised life-forms" on the planet Inter Minor.

As Third Doctor adventures go this is one of the most interesting and inventive. Sure the effects are crap, that's a given, but look beyond this tale and you'll find an allegory about what people class as entertainment. This miniscope can be viewed as a metaphor for voyeursism and how reality TV can be destructive rather than creative. That aside, it's a romp, packed with ideas and played with pantomime enthusiasm from the cast. Who could resist such garish costumes? Leslie Dwyer obviously relishing his role of Vorg who is the polar opposite of his miserable Mr Partridge from Hi-De-Hi, chews up every scene he's in whilst Cheryl Hall as his assistant Shirna manages to reign him in now and again. Pertwee and Manning are firing on all cylinders, he's all knowing and she's all screaming but it's a perfect and enchanting combination that makes it such a rewarding run of episodes.

Extras Disc 3

Commentary 1 – Barry Letts and Katy Manning chat about the production of this much loved story. It's a friendly piece, like eves-dropping on a conversation between old friends.

Commentary 2 Toby Hadoke moderates Cheryl Hall, Jenny McCracken, Terrance Dicks, Brain Hodgson and Peter Halliday in a fun gag-track. Hadoke always knows how to get the best out of each participant and keeps it moving at a jolly pace.

Episode 2: Early Edit – Complete with the truly awful "Delaware" version of the theme tune this is a very complete edition of the second episode. Running at nearly 30 minutes this shows how the show is chopped to fit the timeslot, well worth a viewing.

Behind The Scenes – Raw footage from the studio floor and Gallery lasting under two minutes of the recording of this adventure. It illustrates the hustle and bustle of the recording but is far too short to engage the viewer.

Visual Effects Models – More raw footage this time of the special effects shots from the story. They display the limited technology the crew were working with and is incredibly interesting to see exactly what they had to go through to get the required shots, especially what they had to do with the Drashigs to try and make them believable.

"Five Faces Of Doctor Who" Trailer – The promo for the celebratory re-run of stories seen in the early 1980’s of which Carnival Of Monsters was shown. A nice piece of retro promo heaven.

Director's Amended Ending – This removes the obvious skull cap make-up which ruined the end scene from the final episode and was edited in time for the Five Faces Of Doctor Who run of episodes.

CSO Demo – Exactly what you think it is, a presentation by Barry Letts showing how Colour Separation Overlay works and how it can be used to an advantage.

TARDIS Cam No2 – Another piece of CGI from the old style BBC Doctor Who website. This is one of the better ones showing the TARDIS bolting through the Time Vortex.

PDF Materials – If you want to read the Radio Times listings from when the story originally transmitted then here's your chance, if you pop the disc into your PC or MAC.

Coming Soon – A smashing trailer for the classic story Planet Of The Spiders.

Easter Egg – Not telling…
Doctor Who: Carnival of Monsters

Extras Disc 4

Destroy All Monsters – An interesting look at the story behind the production of the serial. There's plenty of info here from some of the cast and crew, could have done without the screaming announcer who becomes irritating after a while.

On Target with Ian Marter
– Yes, for those of you who didn't know actor Ian Marter who played Harry Sullivan (and Lt John Andrews in Carnival Of Monsters) wrote nine Target novelisations. A charming piece, this is a celebration of his ability to take liberties with the original scripts and transform the stories slightly. It also celebrates the man himself and Elisabeth Sladen and Tom Baker join others to speak, at times very emotionally of this charming man. Tom covers about the scripts they wrote together too which really does make this one of the most fascinating extras of the set.

The A to Z Of Gadgets & Gizmos – A funny and inventive look at the technology seen in the run of the classic series.

Mary Celeste – 18 minutes of history here of one of the most infamous ships every built and included here for the ship in the story, the SS Bernice disappears. Informative but worth viewing only the once.

Carnival Of Monsters is a solid piece of Doctor Who that's fun and entertaining. But the set takes a dark turn with its next release, Resurrection Of The Daleks

Swinging Shrimpton for Gillan

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 06:38 AM PDT

Most people have a large and extensive wish list when it comes to things that they would like to see in Doctor Who. The full realisation of The Time War, the return of the Ice Warriors, all eleven Doctors in one room together, and the list goes on and on.

But co star of the new series Karen Gillan has a simple idea: that an episode of Doctor Who should be set in the swinging sixties!

As wishes go it's not something that is terribly hard to achieve, it wasn't utilised to the its maximum extent but there was certainly the 1966 setting for The War Machines with William Hartnell that had The Inferno Club with its (not so) trippy hippies.

Gillan's statement stemmed from the fact that she is currently preparing for her newest role in BBC Four's Shrimpton, which is set in the 1960's.

This is her first piece of work that she will have undertaken since filming for Doctor Who and naturally the actress is excited to get her teeth into a role that is slightly different:

"When that script came along I was like, 'This is perfect for the first thing that I do after I finish Doctor Who'".

Note how she uses the phrase "after I finish Doctor Who", what with the revelation in The Impossible Astronaut that Amy is pregnant could we be about to see a departure for Karen from the good ship TARDIS?

Hopefully not, she is probably just talking about after she's finished this series before she goes onto the next. But it's always nice to have the speculation…

Alex: ‘I Was Not Expecting This!'

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 05:34 AM PDT

Alex Kingston, better known to many as Mrs. Robinson River Song, has suggested that she wasn't initially prepared for the frequent reappearances her character's been making since her introduction in 2008′s Silence in the Library.

The American-based British actress, whose eighth Doctor Who episode Day of the Moon will be broadcast this Saturday with two more currently in production, said that at first she believed her two-parter in Series 4 would be an isolated story and not the beginning of a much larger multi-season arc.

"When I first did Doctor Who with David Tennant, I wasn't expecting that at all.  As far as I was concerned, it was just a two-episode story arc with me being held forever in a computer, or whatever.  But Steven [Moffat, head writer and exec producer] always intended that she would come back."

However, the fact that Kingston was surprised by the importance of her character probably doesn't mean that she's dissatisfied with the likelihood of being stuck on Doctor Who for the next seventeen decades – rather, she seems quite pleased with the unique situation that River has found herself in…

"The really exciting journey for me, and for Steven, is backtracking.  The characters keep missing each other.  She's like The Time Traveler's Wife.  In this particular season, and certainly in the first two episodes, what you see is her knowing that she's on the brink of the moment where the Doctor doesn't know any more who she is.  And I think that's just tragic, really."

While River's gradual realization of her fate sucks for her, it's great for us, the viewers, who get to see her character develop.  No longer is she simply an imprisoned "Hello Sweetie!" shouter; she's beginning to turn into someone we almost think we might kind of know.  And the more we know her, the more likely we are to care about her.  To you River-hating landlubbers out there – this is a good thing.

You can watch Alex Kingston alongside series irregulars Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill in this Saturday's Doctor Who – Day of the Moon – on BBC One at 6PM, BBC America at 9/8c, or Space at 8/7c!

As those of you who follow us on Twitter will know, Sarah-Jane.tv will be redesigning the website over the next couple of months. We will be sad to see the old design go, but as they say, out with the old and in with the new.

In an attempt to get fans of the blog more involved with the site, we have decided that you will be given the chance to design the new Sarah-Jane.tv logo that will appear on our brand new banner!

So here is your chance to get in on the action and leave your mark with us. The competition is open to everyone, all ages, any skills. If you're good at graphic designing, why not jump on to Photoshop and get stuck in? If not, we will be happy to receive hand drawn logos and work with you to digitalise your design. Your design must include the words "Sarah-Jane.tv" but the rest is up to you.

But if that's not enough for you, the winner of the competition will receive a Classic Who box set, Doctor Who: The BBC Radio Episodes, worth £48 courtesy of BBC Audio Go.

The competition will run until 29th May and will be judged by Joe Lidster, author of The Sarah Jane Adventures "The Nightmare Man" and "Mark of the Berserker."

You can send your designs to us at kirstyjay12@hotmail.com along with your name and contact email address. The winner will be contacted via email at the end of May. You are allowed to submit as many designs as you like to us, so let your creativity flow.

Good luck! We look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Matt's BAFTA Nom!

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 12:17 AM PDT

Massive congratulations to Doctor Who star Matt Smith who has received a BAFTA nomination for his starring time travelling role!

The TV BAFTA award nominations have been announced, and Smith lines up with Jim Broadbent (Any Human Heart, you may recall he was a Doctor in Curse of the Fatal Death), Daniel Rigby (Eric and Ernie) and old foe Benedictus Chumbawumba Benedict Cumberbatch (Steven Moffat's Sherlock) to fight it out for the Leading Actor award.

Of course, they won't actually be fighting…

The eagle-eyed among you will notice that David Tennant isn't nominated, despite some interesting roles since leaving Doctor Who, notably Single Father.

Interestingly, the BBC features 49 nominations across its channels, while Channel 4 and its networks make 25 nominations. Sadly ITV1 scrape just eight nominations which given their recent attempts to make some notable drama is a shame. The Sky network, meanwhile, contributes six nominations.

That's cash that comes out of your pocket, people, to pay Sky at a premium rate for making shows that are largely as filling as a McDonalds.

The 2011 British Academy Television Awards will take place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Sunday, May 22nd, and be broadcast on BBC One later that evening.

Tom Baker Reflects Back on Lis Sladen and Sarah Jane

Posted: 25 Apr 2011 10:33 PM PDT

Today marks one week since the unbelievable news broke that we lost Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith) to cancer. The BBC had dedicated this past Saturday's transmission of Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut (the premiere episode of the new 2011 series) to her and afterwards there was a 12 minute piece on CBBC titled, My Sarah Jane: A Tribute to Elisabeth Sladen which if you saw it, I'm sure it didn't leave you with a dry eye. In it, many of her co-stars spoke about their time working with her including David Tennant and Matt Smith. The day after she passed, another Doctor actor had his say as well.
