The State of the Art on the BBC iPlayer

If you'd like to hear my BBC Radio 4 adaptation of Iain M.Banks' 'The State of the Art', the link to it on the BBC iPlayer is here. And yes, though people in other countries can't watch television on the iPlayer, they can listen to radio shows. It should stay up for about a week. Hope you enjoy it.

And now it can be told: I'm soon going to be part of a monthly podcast, a sort of show and tell of SF and fantasy, set to start mid-May. It's going to be called The SF Squeecast, and it features me, Seanan McGuire, Elizabeth Bear and Catherynne M.Valente, all kept in check by SF archivist and Chicks Dig Time Lords editor Lynne Thomas. More about that nearer the time. Cheerio!

Curse of the Black Spot Teaser

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 06:25 AM PDT

As with The Impossible Astronaut, the BBC have released a teaser to Curse of the Black Spot, featuring guest star Hugh Bonneville with a solemn voice over…

This episode also features actress and model Lily Cole, although you won't see here in this particular clip:

Bonneville plays pirate Captain Avery, while you might also like to know that Lee Ross of Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes , where he played DCI Litton (and more recently appeared in EastEnders) also guests as Boatswain (pronounced "bowsun", of course).

After the shocks of Day of the Moon, we're hoping for something to bring the adventures a bit more down to earth for next week. Don't forget that Curse of the Black Spot – which features Amy Pond as a pirate, cosplay lovers – kicks off at the slightly later 6.15 pm next Saturday, May 7th, on BBC One!

Who Is the “Little Girl”?

Posted: 30 Apr 2011 05:58 AM PDT

We'll have a full review of Day of the Moon later in the weekend, but in the mean time – just who is that little girl?

And how did she do THAT?!

We'll make the warning now: if you're still waiting to watch Doctor Who, hit one of the links on the right, because there are spoilers ahoy!

Anyone expecting to find some answers as to what Amy did to the little girl in the spacesuit at the end of The Impossible Astronaut will have a long wait, just as they will to see a answers to the whole lot of questions that were posed in this fast-paced episode that eventually saw the Doctor defeat the Silence (or did it?).

Here are a few questions we would like to see the answer to:

Who is the little regenerating girl (kind of an obvious question)?

What happened during the three months between The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon?

Why was Amy "still dreaming" according to the eye-patched Frances Barber (who apparently doesn't appear for several episodes yet…)?

Where did the Silence find dwarf star alloy if they needed mankind to get to the moon?

How many conspiracy websites is Steven Moffat a member of?

What is going on with Amy's pregnancy?

Who owns the Lodger TARDIS?

Does the Doctor really die as shown in the opening ten minutes of The Impossible Astronaut?

My own personal theory is that the events in The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon – a two part adventure that Steven Moffat described as being "like a season-finale" – are in fact the Series 6 finale, or certainly an aspect of it.

No doubt we will see the answers unfold over the coming weeks…

Feel free to offer us your own questions…

Next Time: The Curse of the Black Spot

As reported earlier in the week, the BBC have now released a "prequel" for next week's episode, The Curse of the Black Spot, featuring a journal entry from the Captain of the good ship Fancy (played by Hugh Bonneville):

Prequel: Curse of the Black Spot, BBC, via BBC Website

In addition, the episode trailer is now available to watch, alongside the "Next Time" trailer from this week's episode, Day of the Moon:

Trailer: Curse of the Black Spot, BBC, via BBC Website

Next Time: Curse of the Black Spot, BBC, via BBC Website

The Curse of the Black Spot will premiere on BBC1/BBC1HD at 6:15pm, 7th May in the United Kingdom; then follows on SPACE in Canada at 8:00pm ET, BBC America in the United States at 9:00pm ET, and on ABC1 in Australia at 7:30pm on the 14th May.

The TARDIS is marooned onboard a 17th-century pirate ship whose crew is being attacked by a mysterious and beautiful sea creature, as the time-travelling drama continues.

Becalmed and beset by cabin fever, the pirates have numerous superstitious explanations for the Siren's appearance. The Doctor has other ideas but, as his theories are disproved and every plan of escape is thwarted, he must work to win the trust of the implacable Captain Avery and uncover the truth behind the pirates' supernatural fears – and he must work quickly, for some of his friends have already fallen under the Siren's spell...

Doc-opoly!

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 08:55 PM PDT

Doctor Who MonopolyFirst comes a wallet busting chess set and now, in an attempt to conquer not only Saturday nights but also dreary, rainy Sunday afternoons when there's no electricity and you've literally used up every conversation you've every had/thought of, there now comes Doctor Who Monopoly Limited Edition!

Joining the ranks of Monopoly: Bass Fishing, Monopoly: Fedex and Monopoly:Betty Boop, Doctor Who Monopoly Limited Edition will finally capture the Doctors habit of buying up planets and hording them like a miser! Its every space capitalists dream!

While there are no images as yet of just what you'll be buying, playing as or even using as credit, i thought, in an attempt to meld this mindboggling image of the Doctor demanding rent, coming second in a beauty contest and foreclosing on some Water Works, we'd have a bash at making up just uninspiring things might be on that board-niverse:

  • It goes without saying the jails will be Pandoricas.
  • The playing pieces will probably be random paraphernalia from the Who-niverse such as Screwdrivers, TARDIS', perhaps even a little silver bow tie and Fez!
  • Planet wise you'll be looking to place your hotel/houses (please don't be little TARDIS') on Skaro (Old Kent Road), Earth (Mayfair), Gallifrey (Bond Street) and Mars (Water Works)
  • You know if you want to win at Monopoly all you have to do is just buy four houses for every property you own, then there will be no houses left to convert to hotels! Making you the winner by default!  Ha!
  • Passing through the Rift will earn you 200 credits to spend on Kronk-burgers.
  • And The Electric Works will be Cybrus Industries.

Can you think of any equally uninspiring uses of the Whoinverse?

The set, limited to 5000 copies, will be available 1st August and can be pre-ordered from Forbidden Planet (Regent Street) for £26.99!
