New Doctor Who/Torchwood Teasers

Today saw the BBC release two trailers featuring clips from the new series of Doctor Who and Torchwood!

The first trailer aired after the morning coverage of the Royal Wedding showcasing popular BBC shows to the tune Bring Me Sunshine, popularised and sung by comedy duo Morecambe and Wise; captioned When it's worth watching, watch it with us, as well as Doctor Who and Torchwood the trailer featured classic shows like One Foot in the Grave, the aforementioned Morecambe and Wise and Only Fools and Horses, and more recent shows such as Gavin and Stacey, Merlin and Sherlock.

The second trailer aired after this evening's edition of The One Show, and focused on a number of shows that will be broadcast over the course of the summer; captioned Original British Drama, shows covered included The Shadow Line (with Christopher Eccleston), Exile (with John Simm), The Night Watch (with Michael Gambon and Bill Nighy), Luther (with Paul McGann), and of course Doctor Who and Torchwood.

No date was given for when Torchwood would be broadcast, though it is expected in July 2011.

Jack's Coming Back?

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 05:46 AM PDT

Once you've had Jack, apparently, you can't go back. Lord Moffat of Who hopes that one day everyone's favourite immortal poly-sexual Time Agent Captain Jack Harkness (John Horatio Barrowman) will step back on board the TARDIS.

Speaking to The Gothamist Moffat refused to rule out bringing Jack or any other character back  from the Russell T. Davies era (there's still a chance, Thomas Kincade Brannigan!), denying that there was a 'schism' between the two eras (is there anyone who actually believes there is?)

It was Moffat himself who wrote Captain Jack's first appearance in the two parter The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and there is no reason why he wouldn't want Jack to come back, no more, no more, no more, no more:

"In my head there is a continuing story. There's no idea that we're abandoning anything. There is an element that the Doctor moves on from people in a rather scary but inevitable way. He won't be nearby forever…"

Well no…he's dead…right?

Doctor Who will return this Saturday for the conclusion to The Impossible Astronaut, Day of the Moon on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in, well, America.

The Critical Fan's Guide

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 04:18 AM PDT

Doctor Who 2010 bookSo you've finished reading Ultimate Regeneration and you've become so addicted to new series critiques that you want a fan-written take on Matt Smith's first episodes as well.  Where do you turn?

Why not send a few quid through publisher Punked Books to authors Steven Cooper and Kevin Mahoney and order a copy of Steven Moffat's Doctor Who 2010: The Critical Fan's Guide to Matt Smith's First Series (unauthorized)?

The co-writers summarize, critique, and generally help you wrap your head around Doctor Who's 31st season, as well as The Sarah Jane Adventures episode Death of the Doctor (guest-starring Matt Smith) and Who holiday special A Christmas Carol in 75,000 words.  The book looks at many of 2010′s more controversial Doctor Who moments, from the colorful new Daleks to Amy's make-out session with the Doctor, as well as the fan-applauded concepts, like the cracks in the universe and the return of the Weeping Angels, which features on the cover.  In doing so, Cooper and Mahoney draw on years of experience as Who enthusiasts to bring you the most comprehensive and in-depth take on Chapter 1 of the Moffat era so far.

You can order a printed copy from Amazon for only £7.99, or get one for your Kindle, iPad, Nook, or other e-reader at your device's respective store for just £2.99!  Also, we're working on giving this book the Kasterborous review treatment, so stay tuned!

Moon Teasers Keep on Coming

Posted: 29 Apr 2011 02:12 AM PDT

When half the world seems to have already seen Day of the Moon, it might seem as though all of the secrets left to discover in Doctor Who Series 6 have been let out.

Needless to say, that's not the case until you actually clap eyes and ears on the episode yourself, and we're not about to break any spoilers for you this close to the event.

Neither are SFX, who although revelling in their "we saw it first" reverie, are pretty sensitive when it comes to River Song's favourite word: "spoilers!"

We've once again picked out a few of the printed hints and offer you our take on what they might mean…

There's a very silly stunt involving one of the TARDIS's rooms, that may make you cringe, but made us laugh. It seems likely that we might get to see the swimming pool, the first non-console room since the Tenth Doctor found some clothes in The Christmas Invasion

Pay close attention to the discussion following the "bow tie" moment at the start of the episode; what may seem like a throwaway comment actually becomes vital later on. This is great writing, by the sound of it, but is one of those things that mean that everyone needs to focus on the show and not comment on Karen Gillan's legs…

The TARDIS can't seem to make its mind up about someone. This is interesting. Rory, Amy and River have all been in there before. The Doctor has been living in the TARDIS for years. Which leaves Canton, if the promotional pictures are anything to go by… or does it?

Unless you've had inside information, you will NEVER predict what happens in the final scene. There is one thing about great TV, and this is being unable to guess what comes next. The Impossible Astronaut had this in spades, and it looks like Day of the Moon might just keep us guessing too. It's even been said that people will be "shouting at the TV" after this…

And our Fan of the Month for April 2011 is…

Classic Doctor Who shirts from Forbidden PlanetT-shirt's- You're either in them or you're on them. Those of us not lucky enough to be disposably niche or genuinely iconic will have to settle to dribbling our tea down them. But at least we can console ourselves with a dose of uplifting cool for our sad wardrobes.

Hanging on the nearest coat-hanger is a vision from Telos, home to the frozen tombs of the cybermen (good title, that.) Its impressively obscure enough to make it nigh on essential (any item of clothing celebrating the fantastic Tomb of the Cybermen is worth owning.)

Up next and the Daleks are stalking West London, hanging out under bridges and possibly soliciting services of an unsavoury nature no-doubt. The image has been snatched straight from The Dalek Invasion of Earth and blasted straight into your chestplate.

And finally there are Cybermen proceeding down by St Pauls stomping straight from your memories of The Invasion and woven into a t-shirt that will purge you of all your emotions and weaknesses (any lose of emotions or feelings of weakness while wearing this t-shirt are purely coincidental.)

All these fantastic shirts are available to pre-order now for £16.99 from Forbidden Planet with The Invasion and The Dalek Invasion of Earth heading your way on the 27th May with the Tomb shirt heading out on the 2nd.

Dalek Royal Wedding?

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 09:06 PM PDT

Most of the K team will be missing the private Royal Wedding between two people we don't know today, but you can rest assured that the Whoniverse will not sleep!

While episodes from the 2005 series will be airing throughout the day on Watch (just like they have every evening this week…) one plucky Dalek owner has decked out the most fascist of space aliens in nationalistic attire, as you can see on the right.

Luckily, as none of the Windsors have never been associated with any form of fascism of any kind, ever, then this image doesn't feature here as a satirical dig at the German British Royal Family.

Decking out a Dalek prop in the only way that looks more British than an Ironside Dalek, bonkers Chris Balcome is clearly entering into the spirit of things, and looks set to forget the economic hard times the UK is facing thanks to people with too much money by enjoying a private wedding on TV (apparently this isn't a state occasion; imagine the coverage if it was…) that our taxes are contributing to between two people with too much money…

Still, if  you're a Royalist and don't mind propping up an ancient and ridiculous institution so that people with a bit more money than you can "be in charge", enjoy your day!

(Thanks to Joe!)
