| Last 6 Episodes to Air on CBBC... Posted: 04 May 2011 02:01 AM PDT Simon Brew over at Den of Geek is reporting that the last 6 episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures that were filmed will be aired on CBBC as a tribute to Elisabeth Sladen. As quoted from Den of Geek: "Contrary to press reports today we can confirm that no new episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures will be filmed following the tragic death of actress Elisabeth Sladen in April, 2011. As a tribute to Elisabeth the six episodes that were recorded with her last year will be broadcast on CBBC at a date to be confirmed." This news brings mixed feelings for this fan-sadness and happiness. Although Sarah Jane will no longer be fighting new aliens and monsters in the distant future, she will be gracing our screens with new adventures for one last time. Of course, for as long as there are fans remembering, she will never truly disappear from our hearts. ( You can read the full article over at Den of Geek) | ||

| The Impossible Astronaut BARB viewing figures. Posted: 04 May 2011 12:15 AM PDT
So after all the big newspaper ranting that Doctor Who is unpopular in the UK, the official Viewing figures have been released by BARB. 8.86 Million people watched the episode with an Audience appreciation Index of 88 and it was the 6th most watched programme in the week. Now as far as fans are concerned the last bit is the one that counts. The competition are Soap Opera's and reality shows who in all fairness have multiple episodes in a week. It's going to be another week wefore we know what the final figures for "Day of the Moon" are.

| The Impossible Astronaut - Chart Position Posted: 03 May 2011 11:46 PM PDT Barb have now issued final ratings for the week ending 24 April making Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut the 6th most watched programme of the week. The chart is dominated by soaps with Lewis in 19th place and The Reckoning at 20th the only other non soap programmes to make the top 20. The overnight chart saw the show in 13th place, the rise being due to the large number of people who record Doctor Who for viewing later in the week. The Impossible Astronaut becomes the 44th episode of Doctor Who to achieve a top ten place. It is a higher chart placing than any other season premier in the show's history, apart from the Eleventh Doctor's first episode, The Eleventh Hour, which was 3rd. Out of 771 Doctor Who episodes broadcast, only 13 have achieved a higher chart placing. | ||

| SJA Series 5 Completion: Update Posted: 03 May 2011 10:17 PM PDT Some press reports have indicated that the BBC intends to complete the fifth series of the hit show The Sarah Jane Adventures despite the sad passing of Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith, from cancer last month. However new information has come to light thanks to Twitter that this is not the case. A source close to the matter stated to The Sun that although the writers and production staff were unsure whether to continue on with production in the wake of Sladen's passing; however the tabloid claims that the scripts could be re-worked in such a fashion that the season did not have to be abandoned However despite the fact that this would be great news in many ways, it isn't as simple as all that. Speaking on Twitter this morning, series writer Phil Ford summarised the situation in the following fashion:
Many thanks to The Sun for causing another pointless Whoniverse storm. Additionally, thanks to Digital Spy, a website that often forgets that it is nothing more than a very jumped-up fansite (albeit a fansite of EVERYTHING) that nevertheless remains unable to either correctly cite sources or check their facts. We got caught out with this; sorry for any confusion caused. (Via Digital Spy | thanks to Nicola) Update
Hopefully this will serve to clarify the situation for everyone concerned.
| Posted: 03 May 2011 09:42 PM PDT (Just found out: if you've got a Kindle, you can get this now! Just go here and download it for £2.49 if you're in the UK.) I'm delighted to present the cover (I don't yet know the artist, or indeed if that's a painting) to the July issue of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, which will be on sale in physical form from May 10th. They've printed my title so hugely! This is the first time I've appeared in one of the big American SF digests, and this represents rather a dream come true for me. ![]() The story, 'The Copenhagen Interpretation' is the third of my Jonathan Hamilton stories, which started with 'Catherine Drewe' and then earned me a Hugo nod with 'One of our Bastards is Missing'. Once the e-edition of the magazine is out, typically some time after the print edition, (unless you've got a Kindle) I'll put up a link and instructions as to how to download it. It's not just selfishness on my part to show the world the story; everyone should know the wonder of an issue of Asimov's. To celebrate Free Comic Book Day, by the way, I'll be doing a signing this Saturday, from 11am or so, at Nostalgia and Comics in Birmingham. Do pop along. Until then, Cheerio! | ||

Gillan and Corden will be popping along to share some secrets about Series 6 and possibly some on Corden's welcome/unwanted return to the Who-fold as Craig Owens in what is being billed as a "sequel" to 2010′s The Lodger. We reckon that you should feel free to tweet him about that! Joining them will be 'ard-as-nails Ross Kemp and The Feeling. A certain train of thought suggests that you should also feel free to tweet them to stop immediately! Paul O' Grady Live airs this Friday 9pm on ITV 1. (via WhovianNet)

| The Mail's Campaign Against Scary Posted: 03 May 2011 07:55 PM PDT Sometimes to see the full picture you have to dig a little deeper. Go beyond what seems contentious or firmly held so that, in pleasing your own inquisitive sense of injustice, you can connect something that seemed arbitrary to a wider, like minded audience. So that after time others can see that, thanks to your chivalrous actions, a wider more focused debate could take place. Or you could just crib some opinions off a blog, ignore 99 per cent of the debate around the issue, use leaps of logic and grammatical sleights of hand so massive and convoluted that if trapped inside a perspex box in the Tate, they'd be worth millions and generally stir up ignorance based on your Newspapers pathological hatred of the BBC. The Daily Mail (who else?) are again pounding their own conclusions into the dirt with a gob-smacking piece entitled: Now Doctor Who Scares off Another One Million Viewers. I know what you're thinking. Yet another year and another ratings debate brought on by tabloid journalists' inability to understand the changes in audience viewer patterns thanks to the myriad ways in which that content can now reach that same audience. But lets not treat The Daily Mail with the same contempt that they treat other's endeavours. Remember that first paragraph? So with that same spirit here's an attempt to engage with the Mail on this issue of parental concern over the complex and dark turn the series has taken. The main thrust of the piece comes from a review of The Impossible Astronaut by Digtial Spy's Morgan Jeffery. In his complementary review Jeffery makes two concessions towards the potential traumatic experiences that younger viewers may have had, the first is the Doctors demise which he calls "questionable" in the sense that some children may find the idea of their hero being shot and subsequently given a Viking send-off less than a thrilling twist and more of a heartbreaking and shocking image that'll be burnt into their nightmares. Perhaps all of this underestimates the savvy of children – most will have know that, despite how disconcerting the moment may be that there were still 12 odd episode to go with about 35 minutes of the one their watching still left to play. The moment had to be desperate, and it had to break through the groans of the casual adult viewers sat with them. Who, lets face it, should have been playing along with the show, telling the little tykes: "How's he going to come back?" In what was a great long to be talked about moment from parent to child. As interesting as that moment is, it's not the one the Mail decided, based on Jeffery's concern, should be the basis for their argument. The problematic moment was Amy's bathroom break and the subsequent Watchmen-style disintegration of Joy, the White House employee; Jeffery's comment was:
Catch the slightly self-conscious tone of that statement? The honesty of saying he was concerned but also felt a little uneasy at saying it? Gone. The Mail dropped the 'Mary Whitehouse' comment (too soon guys?) and instead started with the 'it's debatable' comment leading in. It might seem a fairly innocuous thing to say that something might start a debate – after all, all you're doing is registering the fact that something is contentious, and there's no leading statement there. But if a debate can be had because someone says so, then by God The Mail will find that debate.
So I slapped that quote into Google and before you know it found the blog from which the paper had cribbed its avid fan and mother quote from:
It should be noted that the "mother" doesn't actually say which moments scared her "daughter" in the episode. In her full quote she says since he took over – so that would include, for arguments sake, back when ratings were 'higher' and episodes like the utterly uncomplicated and not very scary The Time of Angels aired. The Mail have assumed that instead of her registering her general concern in an article using the same Digital Spy quote the paper used that she also found the same moment horrifying. There's a difference in being afraid of the tone of an episode and being afraid of one element of it. Remember when the BBC edited out the sound of cracking skulls from Moffat's own two parter The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances. That was one specific moment that went in some peoples minds too far in a very foreboding set of stories. There's an obvious line of enquiry from this quote and the image it paints of Steven Moffat and his 'scary' 'complex' story lines for this season and the language used by The Mail seems to have settled on him being hell bent on generally making everything the visual equivalent of a haunted clown leaping out of your closet yelling quadratic equations at you with equal parts horror and bemusement. The supposed slump in ratings doesn't stem from apathy towards Moffat's tropes but from the general change in viewer figures across the board- if anything it justifies the money spent by BBC Worldwide on making the iPlayer such a viable platform. Something you feel the analogue Daily Mail wouldn't approve of.

| Posted: 03 May 2011 06:21 PM PDT Hugh Bonneville, he's a bit flavour of the year right now isn't he? Not only has the actor received great acclaim for the role that he plays in Downton Abbey, he has also had another success with the BBC2 comedy series Twenty Twelve. And like all actors who are versatile and talented, he was sought out by the Doctor Who production team and made to be in the show. Okay, not made, obviously he wanted to be a part of the greatest show in the history of television and so his wish was granted as he got to play an uber cool role as the Captain of a pirate ship! As Doctor Who meets the wonderful world of Pirates of the Caribbean this Saturday, Bonneville plays Captain Avery who has his hands full with not only a mysterious siren that seems to be angry at the crew of his ship but also the appearance of the Doctor and his friends to deal with as well. The crew all have their own superstitions as to what is actually going on but of course it's going to take the Doctor to really solve the problem and naturally he and Avery do not see eye to eye at first. But that isn't the case off camera as Bonneville revealed to the Daily Express what a wonderful time he had filming his episode:
And continuing this year's slightly more adult theme in Doctor Who, actor Bonneville states that his episode has plenty of meat for you to get your emotional teeth into:
This looks set to be one of the most fun and daring adventures that the Doctor and his friends have ever had! The Curse of the Black Spot will air Saturday 7th May on BBC One and BBC One HD at 6pm
