| Doctor Who Dominates iPlayer Downloads Posted: 05 May 2011 11:16 AM PDT Doctor Who is once more dominating the iPlayer downloads with episode one of the new series, The Impossible Astronaut, being accessed over 1.5 million times in the 12 days following transmission. The figure is nearly than three times higher than any other programme available on the iPlayer over the same period. In the first week after transmission 1.38 million accessed the programme, this compares with the 1.27 million who accessed last year's series opener, The Eleventh Hour, over the same period. The Eleventh Hour went on to become the most downloaded programme ever, a title it still holds, but a title that may be under threat if The Impossible Astronaut continues to attract such attention on the iPlayer. The second in the series, Day of the Moon, had been accessed over 1.07 million times in the four days it has been available. It has eclipsed The Royal Wedding Service which has been downloaded 0.62 million times since Friday. | ||

| Posted: 05 May 2011 09:08 AM PDT It has been a long run in the fourth season of the Eighth Doctor's audio run, but this thrilling story line is starting to come to an end. In Lucie Miller, we hear the eponymous companion, still on Alex's late 2190 era Earth, calling out to the Doctor for help. Lucie explains of the bad that's happened since she left the Doctor, and it is bad. An unknown virus attacks the planets and the Daleks have returned to earth. Things are bad and the one man who could help is nowhere to be seen. Lucie Miller has a similar feel of recent Tennant-era episodes Blink, or more accurately Turn Left. It is a Doctor-lite episode that focuses on the Doctor's family and how resourceful they have become without him. Doctor-lite episode are often hit or miss, Blink was amazing, Turn Left wasn't bad, but Love & Monsters was, for me, boring and dull. Luckily this episode feels more like Turn Left. We listen as Lucie tells us what has happened since the three of them parted ways with the Doctor on Christmas. For Lucie and Alex it has been almost three years, and they haven't been pleasant. Lucie's story is dark and chilling as she speaks of her disabled legs and eyes, and aftermath of the sickness, the Daleks attacks, and the last hope for humanity as they decided to fight back. Armed with nuclear subs the human, under the leadership of Alex, decide to fight back against the alien menace. Lucie Miller is a slower paced adventure, the action being replaced by the dark and hopelessness of the situation, but this is part one of two, and this is setting up for the stunning conclusion. Praise is deserved for Carol Ann Ford. She is playing a woman who suffered through a Dalek invasion once and now her nightmares have returned again. She is clinging to her Grandfather's return even when all others say he's not coming. What should be noticed is how tightly knit this season has been. Unlike the previous three seasons, every episode is important. In Lucie Miller, every major cast member of the season makes an appearance: Tamsin Drew, Lucie Miller, The Monk, Susan Foreman, Alex Campbell and of course The Doctor, and each is there because of what happened in previous episodes. Tamsin still travels with The Monk, but her resolve is beginning to falter, Alex was traveling with Lucie, and the Doctor is still alone and not enjoying it. So this is a darker adventure then most, a sense of hopelessness fills the entire air, and when the Doctor finally shows up to save the day it suddenly seems like things just got worse. If you have been following the season then I don't have to say 'you won't want to miss it,' but for those who haven't this is the beginning of the end for what could easily be called BFA best audio season yet. Starring Paul McGann and Sheridan Smith and written by Nick Briggs, you can purchase Lucie Miller from Big Finish on CD and MP3. | ||

| Posted: 05 May 2011 08:37 AM PDT Two dads have gone head to head in a recent article published by the Guardian online posing the question is Doctor Who to scary for kids? Where to begin with that one… For as long as most people can now remember, Doctor Who has been on the telly forever. Every year the erratic and brilliant man from space in his blue box faces off against scary monsters from distant worlds. But this is not The X Files or Supernatural or Star Trek, this is a show that is designed for all the family to enjoy. Mum, Dad and the kids. The former can enjoy the quality of the script and the acting and an intriguing concept or two and the latter can be healthily scared witless by a cavalcade of monsters that cause them to nestle into their parents arms or "behind the sofa" but feel safe in the knowledge that their favourite alien, the time travelling Doctor will save the day. We love the idea that we're alone in the universe. It makes us feel safe. The human race has created the ideology that there is nothing else out there to bother or attack us or as the Doctor put t to President Nixon in Day of the Moon "if it makes you feel safe, then yes – you're safe." But at heart that's part of the reason that Doctor Who is so scary for some people: what if aliens did turn up on our doorstep and they were cleverer and more advanced than us? It's a question that's been posed in many Doctor Who stories since 1963 and it will continue to be asked for years to come. The answer has been underlined in Doctor Who for many years, when the aliens attack it'll be ok 'cause the Doctor will help. People, especially children, like to be scared. That little rush of adrenaline that a horror film gives you or the terrifying moment that a Weeping Angel is suddenly half a meter away from Amy, arms outstretched and ready to move in for the kill. There's nothing wrong with a good, scary story. People have been telling them for centuries and long may they do so. But this is where some people get the concept of scaring someone so wrong. If scary is done correctly, it can be unsettling, creepy and mystifying all in one brilliant move.
Where is this all leading you ask? To sum up, yes: Doctor Who is scary. Sometimes it's downright terrifying (there are those among us who remember being scared witless as the Daleks chased the Doctor up that air vent in Planet of the Daleks back in November 1993, won't say who – let's just say that they're writing this piece right now and leave it at that) but that's good for kids because it's a friendly scare not a hopeless one. Doctor Who is one of the few TV shows that can have you terrified one minute and laughing the next and that kind of TV show should never be ignored by kids as it sends out the right kind of message: It's not ok to be violent, or mean or try to control someone… But it is ok to be scared.
| Posted: 05 May 2011 08:20 AM PDT Poor old Matt Smith. The self confessed clumsy man has just finished filming the final scenes for this year's series of Doctor Who when he goes and injures himself whilst celebrating! The unlucky fella tripped up in his flat in Cardiff (where he lives while filming Doctor Who each year) and received a nasty bang on the cranium which left him needing a few stitches. Luckily Matt was fine and is now released from hospital and on the speedy road to recovery but according to sources the Beeb would have been very upset if he had sustained the injury before completing his filming schedule:
This does seem a tad harsh considering that Tom Baker broke his collarbone during the filming of The Sontaran Experiment (not to mention winding up a dog and getting a bite on the lip before recording The Pirate Planet – Ed) and caused much more disruption but as ever, take press comments with a pinch of salt. Smith himself has told of how he regularly breaks props on set, including his sonic screwdriver, all the time. Who knows, when the next Christmas special comes out this year, maybe you'll be able to spot the scar if you've got BBC One HD!

| Posted: 05 May 2011 01:58 AM PDT The BBC have released details for Week 21, which includes the synopsis for the fifth episode of the series, The Rebel Flesh; this is due to be broadcast on BBC1/BBC1HD on Saturday 21st May, with the time of broadcast yet to be confirmed. A solar tsunami sends the TARDIS hurtling towards a futuristic factory on Earth, where human doppelgangers are used to mine dangerous acid, as the time-travelling adventures continue.A second wave hits and the "Gangers" separate. They can remember every second of their "original's" life and feel every emotion they've ever experienced. But are these memories stolen or have they been bequeathed? Are the Gangers merely faulty machinery that must be shut down or are they living, breathing, sentient beings? Can the Doctor convince the terrified humans to accept these "almost people" and prevent an all-out civil war before the factory explodes? | ||
| Posted: 05 May 2011 12:50 AM PDT ![]() Oliver Elmes, the man who designed the Seventh Doctor's Title sequence, has died.In 1987 producer John Nathan Turner commissioned BBC designer Oliver Elmes to design a new opening for the show. Elmes worked with CAL Video to produce the first Doctor Who logo to be designed entirely on computer. The basic concept was the 'Big Bang', with stars exploding to form a multi-coloured galaxy, and features a spinning TARDIS and Sylvester McCoy's face painted silver. The sequence which cost £20,000 and took three months to create, ran for the duration of McCoy's reign, from Time and the Rani to Survival, appearing on 12 stories, some 42 episodes. A short documentary explaining the history of the sequence, Helter Skelter, is included on the DVD release of Time and the Rani. After the series was put on hold in 1989, the new logo continued to be used for the Virgin New Adventures until Bad Therapy in 1996. In addition to his work on Doctor Who, Elmes designed title sequences for Elizabeth R, The Goodies, and The Good Life. | ||

| Posted: 04 May 2011 11:10 PM PDT Do you like Doctor Who? (well you're here reading so obviously you do) Do you like crafts? How about Doctor Who crafts? Not crafts as in the TARDIS or the Dalek Mother ship now, I mean crafts as in say a Tom Baker scarf or maybe dolls made to look like the Doctor and companion themselves. If so (and let's face it, who doesn't like creative people), read on! Stylist.co.uk has published a new article all about Doctor Who Crafts and I have to say seeing the talent and creativity of fans is always a nice treat. Doctor Who has always had a way of inspiring those who grow attached to it to get a bit more involved than your average TV program. We collect things, we write things, we film things and we even create items that many of us might never have thought of. From crocheting dolls to sculpting charms of our favorite characters fan's creativity knows no bounds. What a great idea Stylist had to showcase just a hint of the talent that fans possess. Vincent Van Gogh would be proud of all the artist fans of his good friend the Doctor and I can't say I blame him. | ||

| Posted: 04 May 2011 10:30 PM PDT Karen Gillan recently talked with Stylist.co.uk and was asked a variety of questions about Doctor Who, fame and fashion, including how she feels being more well known in sci-si circles. It doesn't seem there is much that bothers Karen about her new found fame, but she does tell of one admirer who seems to want to keep in touch.
Karen will soon be playing model Jeam Shirmpton in a new BBC Four biopic, We Take Manhattan.
Karen was a model herself before breaking into acting, but she seems reluctant to go back to that world… "Modelling isn't something I ever intended on doing – it just kind of happened when I moved to London. I went to the Italia Conti stage school for a few months then dropped out because I got a job on Rebus. When that finished I started working in a pub in Kennington, south London, and went 'Oh my god, what have I done?' Then I was scouted in the street and started modelling – it was a better way to make money." (Via Stylist.co.uk)

Doctor Who is once more dominating the iPlayer downloads with episode one of the new series, The Impossible Astronaut, being accessed over 1.5 million times in the 12 days following transmission.
It's when it's violent that we have to shield children from it. If Doctor Who contained full blooded serial killer (in human form) or worse going around hacking up blood and guts then no, it would not be suitable for children. It would simply be Torchwood. But the show oh so cleverly has its lead character portrayed as a basic pacifist, a man who abhors violence, never carries a gun and always tries to find another way. Some TV heroes just like to shoot things in the face but not our Doctor.

Oliver Elmes, the man who designed the Seventh Doctor's Title sequence, has died.
