Kopic's Doctor Who & Torchwood News

Kopic's Doctor Who & Torchwood News

What Happened and What's Going To

Posted: 11 May 2011 04:35 PM PDT

I had a very nice Free Comic Book Day, thanks for asking, at Birmingham's Nostalgia and Comics, a few photos from which can be seen here. Me and Jimmy Broxton went out to lunch with blogger Neil Patel, and he conducted this pleasingly oddly-questioned interview with me. As did Newsarama the other day, concentrating on 'Reign of the Doomsdays'.

This weekend sees the Bristol International Comic and Small Press Expo (BICASPE, which is a bit too close to 'big arse' for my liking), where I'll be hanging out with my British comicker chums, signing at 1pm on the Saturday, and playing Just A Minute at 11.30am on the Sunday morning. I gather it's sold out now, so I'll see you there if I see you.

The issue of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine with my novelette in it should be on newstands and in subscriber's hands now, but I'm waiting to make another fuss about it when the e-edition is available.

Two or three exciting things have happened in the last week or so, which I look forward to telling you about, but the source of most excitement for me is that I'm closing in on the end of the novel, writing 2000 words a day as the marathon turns into a sprint for the line. I've got three pieces of paper on which I'm compiling things to remember: 'list of things to watch for in rewrite', which is a list of everything I want to tweak when I'm going back through the book, immediately after I write 'the end', and can see everything in context; 'places to visit', which is a list of places in London I want to pay a new visit to now that I've written about them, to add a few more details and to make sure they haven't changed; and the third list has a title which I won't reveal to you just yet. I'm doing justice to my comics work at the same time, but the novel is eating my life at the moment, and I couldn't be happier, it's the state to which I've always aspired.

Anyhow, I look forward to seeing some of you in Bristol. Until then, Cheerio!

Much Ado About Tennant and Tate

Posted: 11 May 2011 07:30 AM PDT

"I was gonna stay with you forever…"

Those were some of the heartbreaking last words uttered by Donna just before the Tenth Doctor had to wipe her mind to save her life in 2008's Journey's End. But some real life journey's don't have that sad an ending and the proof is in the pudding as it's been unveiled that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be working together again on a new stage production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.

The duo has never been without each other for long, appearing together in 2009's Christmas special of Never Mind the Buzzcocks and other endeavours as David confirmed:

"We've not stopped doing stuff together since then. I did a bit on Catherine's Christmas show, and we stood in for Jonathan Ross [on Radio 2] a few times."

Whilst the Doctor and Donna were firm friends in Doctor Who (and nothing else) the pair will be trying a different approach to their relationship as they play the lovers Benedick and Beatrice in this new production.

Tennant also revealed the very simple process that led him to realise the Catherine was perfect for the role of Beatrice:

"The thinking was "I'd like to do a play; I'd like to do Much Ado About Nothing; and it just so happens that the perfect Beatrice in my head is Catherine". That's as involved as my thought process was."

This is Tate's first step into the role of professional Shakespearian acting whereas Tennant is an old hand at it but we're sure that the two will be absolutely fantastic on stage together, letting their natural chemistry shine.

You can read the full interview with Tennant and Tate in the Telegraph; Much Ado About Nothing previews at Wyndham's Theatre from May 16. To obtain tickets call 0844 482 5120.

Hand of Fear Overnights

Posted: 11 May 2011 06:39 AM PDT

Once again Doctor Who has been a ratings winner for the BBC scoring high viewing figures for its first two episodes.

You'd be immediately forgiven for thinking that we're talking about The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon at this point but what has also been getting good ratings is the repeated viewing of The Hand of Fear, the last Doctor Who story from 1976 to feature Sarah Jane Smith as a full time companion, shown recently on BBC Four as a tribute to the late and great Elisabeth Sladen.

Unofficial overnight viewing figures show that part one got 203,000 viewers (a .94% share of the total audience) and part two received 276,000 (a tasty 1.19% share).

Now, you may say that these figures are not all that high in the grand scheme of things ("that's not enough to get them to show more episodes!" I hear you cry) but if you portion it against the competition that was playing on other channels at the time…well then it looks good.

Going up against Doctor Who was the interminable Zac Efron: The Hot Desk on ITV 2 (65,000), Total Wipeout on BBC Three (252,000) and Friends on E4 (168,000). The winner was The Simpsons on Sky One with 496,000 viewers but we'll forgive them as they made a "he will knock four times" reference in their 2009 Halloween special.

What a lovely tribute for Lis Sladen to receive.

Steven Moffat Hates You

Posted: 11 May 2011 03:21 AM PDT

Look at those eyes; he's disgusted in you. Are you the sort of person who likes to attend press screenings of Doctor Who and then post the entire plots of any episodes you see weeks in advance?  Do you like to make sure all your friends on the web are aware of all the stories' surprises before they're broadcast?  Do you like to call yourself a Doctor Who fan?

If your answer to all three of those questions is yes, then yes, Steven Moffat hates you.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5, the head writer of the best show in the universe recently made some angry but perfectly valid attacks on those spoilerphiles out there who not only continuously disregard River Song's famous warnings, but ensure that everyone around them is aware of the future twists and shocks they can scrape together, whether everyone around them likes it or not.

"Stories depend on shocking people.  Stories are the moments that you didn't see coming, that are what live in you and burn in you forever.  If you are denied those, it's vandalism."

If you, dear reader, are one of those vandals, the Grand Moff has banished you from the Whovian community forever:

"You can imagine how much I hate them.  It's only fans who do this, or they call themselves fans.  I wish they could go and be fans of something else."

That's right, spoiler-spreaders.  You're not wanted here.  Get out of the Whoniverse and go watch Don't Scare the Hare.

All this Moff-angst is being triggered by the posting of a full synopsis of The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon online prior to their broadcast after one such "fan" attended the premiere screening.  Moffat's opinion of this particular individual:

"I just hope that guy never watches my show again, because that's a horrific thing to do."

Just to be clear: we know plenty of people, whether enthusiastic about Doctor Who or something else, who prefer being spoiled because they hate surprises.  If that description fits you, please don't leave the fandom; it's your choice if you want to know what happens in advance.  But if you choose that path, please don't ruin it for everyone else.  If you do, then it's perfectly okay with us if you pack your bags and fall out of our TARDIS.

Hear Moffat's rant for yourself and view commentary from the BBC's Colin Paterson and Doctor Who Magazine writer Benjamin Cook below…

British Steel takes on Doctor Who

Posted: 11 May 2011 02:44 AM PDT

Artistic view of the Media Village front, BBCAviva Investors, the current owners of the Porth Teigr project to regenerate Cardiff Docks - and the new Roath Lock BBC Studios - have agreed to sell the 38 acre development to the British Steel Pension Scheme.

The full terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed, but the pension company has agreed to acquire both the BBC studios and to fund the development of the Centre for Creative Industries which is also to be built at the site.

Hoong Wey Woon, Fund Manager for Aviva Investors, said:
This is a landmark transaction for the igloo fund (the developers) and Cardiff. Working closely with the Welsh Assembly Government and the BBC we have been able to deliver an innovative development that will form the first phase of our wider ambitions for the Porth Teigr site.

The financing and sale of this project reduces risk for igloo by securing a fixed exit price and the innovative structure will generate strong returns for our investors.

Aviva also confirmed that the BBC would remain long-term tenants at the site - phase one of the Roath Lock development was completed in January, and Doctor Who is expected to re-locate there from the existing Upper Boat studios during 2012.

To The Death

Posted: 11 May 2011 02:25 AM PDT

This review contains some spoilers for the Big Finish adventures Lucie Miller and To the Death; tread carefully!

It has been four long series for the Eighth Doctor, he has faced cannibals, aged nearly two hundred years, fought Edgar Allan Poe creations, battled the Zygons, Mobius, The Headhunter, The Cybermen, the Nestene, Eight Legs and even the Krynoids, but despite them all nothing could separate the Doctor and Lucie Miller for good. They've had bumps and hiccups along the road but nothing can keep them apart for good. It would have to take the greatest evil in the 'verse for that to happen

Enter the Daleks.

In the CD extras Nicholas Briggs tells us how Alan Barnes said that the Daleks are the greatest threat to the universe and they go around the universe yelling "Exterminate!" but they never kill anyone important. In reality there could have been a middle ground between that and what happens in To The Death.

To The Death takes place right after Lucie Miller (read the review here) and things are not looking better. The Doctor has barely survived a missile attack but he is out cold and not waking up. Susan, Alex and Lucie are panicking. They need the Doctor's help but he won't wake up. They only have one hope and that is to find the TARDIS using Susan's key. So they set out to find the blue box and save the Doctor, and hopefully save the world.

They finally wake the Doctor when the Daleks find them and attack. The Doctor, and us, slowly learn the plan of the Daleks but things don't make sense when an old enemy, once thought destroyed, inexplicably reappears. It is the Dalek Time Controller, and it is revealed that the Daleks recovered him and called a Time Lord to help; the Monk answered.

The Monk is the true enemy of this two-part finale. He released the plague that crippled Lucie Miller, he shut down the jamming device protecting the humans, and he helped the Daleks. In return he got to own all of Earth's greatest paintings, artefacts, and object d'art.

He will be the richest thief in all of time.

Tamsin doesn't like this. She leaves the Monk, joins with our heroes and sets out to fight. They get hold of a bomb, one which the Doctor is willing to take back in time to Amethyst Viral Containment Station and kill the Dalek Time Controller for good, stopping the virus, saving thousands of lives and sacrificing his own, and the laws of time, in doing so.

Susan won't hear of it, Alex doesn't like it, and Lucie not letting it happen. The bomb has to be used in this time to end the war and the save the Doctor. To them the universe needs the Doctor.

At this point the To the Death begins to echo some recent TV adventures, such as the moment in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End in which Davros taunts the Doctor for making his companions into soldiers, into warriors willing to die and kill for him. This happens again (or before?) with Lucie and the group. They all decide to fight and die for the Doctor, with powerful results.

I am split with this ending. On one side of the TARDIS I am sad to see the companions go. I knew they were always going to eventually leave; they all do when they eventually grow up, but to experience death was painful. Would this ending have had the same punch without the death? We have seen era-ending finales that worked with very few deaths, the aforementioned Stolen Earth and Journey's End being prime examples, but on the other side of the blue box I have to commend them for not cheaping out on the finale. The Doctor didn't suck all the Dalek and Cybermen back up, he didn't wipe them away with a super-powered blond, he didn't tug the earth back into place after wiping out the entire fleet and he didn't go back in time to magically heal Lucie. They made a dramatic change and it had a lasting effect on the Doctor and the Monk.

Fans of fantasy writer George R. R. Martin are quickly taught not to love his characters, they will just die. So should we hold the same true for this entire series? Does this ending feel mean? Are we being punished for loving these characters?

The audio comes to a close with a shockingly dark Doctor, one that has been hinted at throughout the season and one that we have been waiting to see. We all know that at some point the Doctor goes dark; he ends the Time War in a brutal single swoop and locks away the Daleks, Time Lords, friends and countless other horrors forever. The Doctor we see at the end of To The Death is almost there, ready to apply his own brand of justice. He also resembles his future Tenth self when he wonders about bypassing the laws of time for his own benefits; there are echoes of The Water of Mars…

A final note needs to be given to Graeme Garden as the Monk. The Monk is selfish, a liar and a coward, this is not surprising, but what was shocking and unexpected was the mournful presence the Monk had towards the sudden death of HIS companion Tamsin Drew. The Monk cared for her, he loved traveling with her, and while he may not have been completely honest with her he never wished this type of harm on her.

So the Doctor and Lucie saga comes to an end. So what is ahead for the Eighth Doctor? We have a small mini-season in the main line of releases. The Doctor reunites with an old companion, Mary Shelley (yes…Frankenstein's Mary Shelley) but only time will tell if we will get a fifth season of the New Eighth Doctor Adventures

Starring Paul McGann and Sheridan Smith and written by Nick Briggs, you can purchase To The Death from Big Finish on CD and MP3.
