Doctor's Wife Exclusive Preview

Posted: 12 May 2011 08:03 AM PDT

Our first preview of Doctor Who Series 6 might have been a long time coming, but it looks as though we chose the best episode to start off with!

Warning: this is a preview of a forthcoming Doctor Who episode. It contains the official synopsis of the episode taken from official BBC PR. It does not contain any spoilers and serves to wet appetites but would advise that if you don't want to know a thing about this Saturday's episode then look away…NOW!

"Sexy…"

After last week's slightly pedestrian episode I feared this new series had peaked a tad too early, what with all the wonderfulness of the first two episodes. Much has been predicted about The Doctor's Wife, mainly because Neil Gaiman is on scripting duties here and the man has done us proud.

The Doctor receives a distress signal from an old friend. Could there really be another living Time Lord out there? Hopes raised, he follows the signal to a junkyard planet sitting upon a mysterious asteroid in a Bubble universe, populated by a very strange family. The Doctor, Amy and Rory are given the warmest of welcomes by Auntie, Uncle and Nephew. But the beautiful and insane Idris greets them in a more unusual fashion – what is she trying to tell the Doctor? As the Doctor investigates, he unwittingly puts his friends in the gravest danger.

Bizarre, off-kilter and totally original, this is without doubt Matt Smith's finest adventure so far. It is a beautiful piece of emotionally charged drama, swathed in bold humour with lashings of sentiment and heart. Do not let these words put you off, there's plenty of sci-fi here but the sort that has you punching the air in appreciation.

Doctor Who: The Doctor's WifeStarting as traditional as you would expect a story set on a planet seemingly constructed in junk, the location soon turns into a surreal and rather unpredictable corner. The characters of Auntie, Uncle and Idris are the sort of people you'd expect to meet in a Gaiman piece, but you soon realize just exactly what is going on here and you start to wallow in Gaiman's total genius. There are more nods to the past in the episode than the whole of the new run put together and will have hardcore fans just as emotional as the rest of us. Also don't be put off by the appearance of an Ood (this has been seen in most trailers so not a spoiler) believe me I sighed when I saw it in the "Next Time" snap shot but don't panic.

The sets, effects (ooh the effects) and direction are first class and a huge improvement on last season's. Suranne Jones is a revelation as Idris. The way she interacts with the regular cast is joyous and surreal. Here is a complicated character that all will fall in love with I promise you. Rory and Amy aren't just tacked into the episode either and I have more respect for Rory after this adventure. He gets to be more than just a drippy husband. As for the Doctor, well I just can't say for fear of giving anything way, but Matt is just perfection.

There are too many highlights in The Doctor's Wife to choose from, maybe the middle section will hold a special place in every fan's heart. One thing is for sure, this has raised the benchmark of quality. Doctor Who has never been this good. Believe the hype!

Review: Dalek Progenitor Room Mini-Set - Toy

Posted: 12 May 2011 04:38 AM PDT

Manufacturer: Character Building

RRP: &ound;9.99

Release Date: 13th May 2011

When a Doctor Who construction set arrives in the mail, it's the perfect excuse to be a child again (unless, of course, you actually are one). Firstly we need to address the elephant in the room; this is Lego, but without Lego actually having anything to do with the product. For years we have championed the fact that Doctor Who Lego products would be a hot item for kids (and adults), but, alas, it seems they didn't spot the gold in them there hills.

Thankfully, Character Options did! And what a treat to behold these new Mini-sets are.

Our first review for the range is the Dalek Projenitor Room. It's not as big as you might think, in fact the packaging can just about fit through a standard letterbox, but this is no problem as it's a great little standalone set.

There are 188 pieces in total, and build time takes between 15-20 minutes. Construction is simple, although a couple of the images in the build booklet are a tiny bit confusing - the hardest part is applying the stickers to the consoles and the progenitor door flaps.

Also worthy of mention is the Supreme Dalek figure that is included in the set. A loyal replica of its on-screen original, easily constructed from 9 parts, but for convenience, comes pre-assembled.

Hopefully at some point Character Building (Character Options' construction range who manufactures the Micro Figures and Sets), will release some extra bases and building bricks so fans can build around the Mini-sets.

Dress Like Eleven!

Oi you!  Yes, you there, 13-year-old digging in your dad's closet!  And you, 13-year-old's dad digging in your own closet!  Sure, there's plenty of tweed jackets in there, but if you want to go to school work the Doctor Who Experience exhibition dressed as the Eleventh Doctor, a grey one or a brown one simply won't do.

Luckily, Entertainment Earth has you covered with its officially-licensed Eleventh Doctor jacket just like the plaid one Matt Smith wears in the current season of Doctor Who, from the same designer as this Tenth Doctor trenchcoat!  Ranging in sizes from small to extra-extra-large, this classic geography professor attire will fit just almost anyone and can be yours for a mere $309.99!

You:

"Hold on… did you just say $309.99?!  That's wot – around £190.25 innit?  Who the bloody 'ell would want to pay that much for a smashing Doctor Who costume piece?!

Answer: You would.

Don't deny it… it's been your dream to walk around town wearing Smith's Doctor's clothing ever since that infamous picture of him on the set of The Time of Angels was unleashed on the public all those year-and-a-half-ish ago.  So when you finally get hold of your new Matt Smith wardrobe addition, complete with elbow patches, here's a list of things you can do with it:

  • Lay it on the ground and use it as a picnic blanket.
  • Suspend it between a couple of chairs and put a portable DVD player with your Doctor Who collection underneath to make the ultimate geek fort!
  • Stick your head in its pockets to see if they really are bigger on the inside.
  • Use it as a means of escape when surrounded by angry heavenly statues.
  • Er… wear it.

If you want one now you'll sadly have to wait a little bit… this jacket won't be available until August, but you can pre-order at the Entertainment Earth website right now and have it shipped to you when it's ready!

Bow tie and braces not included.

Gatiss on ‘The Power of Surprise'

Posted: 12 May 2011 02:30 AM PDT

You've already felt the wrath of The Moffinator, a Show Runner sent from Scotland to destroy spoiling non-fans of Doctor Who - who attend press launches and subsequently spill every detail on the Internet – well now he has a partner-in-hate, Who writer and Gentleman Mark Gatiss.

Speaking in a more calm but no less exasperated tone Gatiss told Digital Spy of his disappointment in such fan's misplaced enthusiasm:

"I'm a great believer in the beauty and the power of surprise. I know myself, as a viewer, I don't want to know these things. As much as you think you do, the moment after you've been told you are crushingly disappointed, because it's never a surprise."

Gatiss, who has written the upcoming Series 6 episode What Are Little Boys Made Of? cites Series 3 episode Gridlock as one example of a beautiful surprise:

"In the end, the creatures that are feasting off people are these giant crabs [and] just because he could, [writer] Russell [T Davies] made them the Macra, who featured in a 1967 Patrick Troughton story [The Macra Terror]. When David [Tennant] looks through the fog and says 'Macra', my hair stood on end! That's the power of surprise!"

Spoilers are called "spoilers" for a reason, people: when leaked too early, they spoil.

The Doctor's Landlord

Posted: 12 May 2011 01:35 AM PDT

The BBC's 'Porth Teigr' development – home to the yet to be finished Roach Lock Studios; the centre for creative development in Wales and Doctor Who's future home – has a new landlord reports Financial News.

The British Steel Pension Scheme have acquired the development from Aviva Investors for an undisclosed amount- adding to the £500 million already accumulated as part of its growing property portfolio.

The BBC which plans to film both Doctor Who, long running wound-a-thon Casualty and the equally long running BBC Cymru soap Pobol y Cwm at the site, have promised to remain 'long term tennants'.

The acquisition of the site is an emotional boon for the BSPS, one of the bigger "final pension" funds that still has deep roots in the Port Talbot area, once home to the biggest steel works in the UK and the employer of many of the fund's members.

6.4: The Doctor's Wife - DWO Spoiler Free Preview

Posted: 12 May 2011 12:07 AM PDT

DWO have seen 6.4: The Doctor's Wife and have put our spoiler-free preview together:

When we first heard Neil Gaiman was to write a Doctor Who story, it would be an underestimation to say were were bloody excited. After all, this is the very same Neil Gaiman who wrote the awesome Sandman comic book series - not to mention the Nebula Award-winning American Gods.

BUT... then we heard his episode was being 'bumped' to series six, and were a little worried things would go the way of Fry...

Fear not though! As right in front of us is the (still-warm-owing-to-the-fact-we've-just-watched-it) preview disc for 6.4: The Doctor's Wife - Neil Gaimain's love letter to Doctor Who. (Yes, they are his words, but it really is!).

In 45 minutes, Gaiman's script takes us to another universe (in more ways than one), and dips several toes into the show's past, present and future - something that will please fans old and new.

As a viewer, prepare to experience a plethora of emotions that will leave you feeling you've run a mental marathon, with no time to stop for liquid refreshment, as you will almost certainly miss something witty, clever or heartbreaking.

As with every episode this season thus far, it is almost impossible to describe the story without giving too much away, but we will tell you this; Suranne Jones, and her character truly shine at the centre of all of this, and the sets and beautiful CGI scenery with its mesmerising bluey-green hues are truly epic. Also stealing some of the spotlight is the TARDIS, and something fans have been begging for since the show's revival in 2005...

Some die-hard fans may view this as a slightly unconventional episode, but this is not a bad thing. There are actually more strands of a traditional Doctor Who story here than you may notice at first, and all the ingredients are there from the cracking story to a purposeful threat, right through to an unforgettable conclusion.

Gaiman takes his turn to hold the proverbial Doctor Who torch, runs with it, and has it burning even brighter by the end.

It's no secret that The Doctor's Wife has had a lot of hype, but honestly, truly, it lives up to everything a fan of Doctor Who could hope for, and will have you hoping this isn't the last Doctor Who script from Neil Gaiman.

Our preview disc is now cold again…time to warm it up!

Rating: 10/10

Five things to look out for...

1) Knock, knock - Who's there?

2) A cupboard with a terrible truth.

3) Uncle's looking a little green.

4) Rory shows his mature side.

5) "The only _____ in the ______ is the _____".

A Question of Regeneration

Posted: 11 May 2011 08:16 PM PDT

I'm sure there was general disappointment when, on 7th September 1987, the Doctor returned in Time and the Rani. Only he wasn't the Doctor. Or at least, he wasn't the Doctor that fans were used to seeing.

Previous to actor Sylvester McCoy's appointment as the famous Time Lord, Doctor Who had gone through another troubled period. Strikes and threats of cancellation hung over production, and there was an uncertainty about the show's future. Colin Baker's removal from the BBC's flagship programme was considered necessary if it was to survive – although it was perfectly understandable when Baker, asked to make a brief appearance in Season 24's opening story for the regeneration, declined. And so, with no other alternative, McCoy donned wig and Sixth Doctor costume. An effect was added, to mask the appearance of the new Doctor, transforming him gradually. It was an important moment that would be compared to past regenerations.

It didn't really work.

As McCoy himself remarked in an interview:

"Colin's hair was curly and blond and they gave me a wig, put a blond wig on me. I mean, I looked like Harpo Marx. It was just silly."

But, to be fair, this isn't the first time that Doctor Who has performed without a traditional regeneration sequence. And it certainly wouldn't be the last!

1970 serial Spearhead From Space, Jon Pertwee's debut adventure, gave us a Doctor without such a device. At the beginning of episode one, we see the TARDIS land, the door opens and an exhausted Doctor (Jon Pertwee) materializes before collapsing. Regeneration has obviously taken place – in between this story and its predecessor The War Games (1969). But unlike 1966 adventure The Tenth Planet, in which the First Doctor (William Hartnell) changes his appearance on screen, we never get to see the full transformation.

And in 2005, the year that everything changed, we were given a new Doctor; Christopher Eccleston's arrival signalled a new era for the show, which had been off the air for far too long. Last seen in the 1996 television movie (actor Paul McGann then in the role), the famous space and time traveller had quite clearly experienced his worst nightmare: a Time War, the greatest conflict fought between Time Lords and Daleks.

The true horrific sequence of events are a mystery, but we do know that sometime after the war ended, the Doctor changed his appearance yet again – unseen to us. In Rose, the first regular new episode since 1989, the Ninth Doctor (Eccleston) comments on his appearance, an indication that he has not long since regenerated.

The Ninth Doctor, looking in the mirror at Rose Tyler's flat:

"Ah! Could have been worse. Look at those ears!"

There is no question that we all love a good regeneration. The Doctor's especially!

Doctor Who: Time and the RaniThankfully we have all moved on a little since those early special effects, and can now be secure in the knowledge that, if a similar situation occurred, the transformation from one Doctor to another would be far more satisfactory these days.

So no more blond (ginger?) or dark wig to scene-steal in future episodes. I mean, imagine if something had gone seriously wrong when they filmed Time and the Rani

Sylvester McCoy: Officer you must help. I've just lost my wig.

Police officer: Certainly, sir, we'll comb the area.

OUCH!!

Super-thesp and Thor director Kenneth Brannagh appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson this week, and thanks to BBC America we have a short clip of the man behind Marvel's latest silver screen outing discussing Doctor Who, TARDISes and Karen Gillan!

The conversation starts as Branagh – star of films such as Valkyrie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Henry V and many more – notices a police box on Ferguson's desk:

Thor is out now in the USA, Australia and the UK, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins.

Torchwood: Miracle Day Promo Images

Posted: 11 May 2011 07:29 PM PDT

With less than two months until Torchwood: Miracle Day premieres on Starz on the 8th July, the channel continues its promotion of the show by releasing some promotional photos of the cast, alongside the brief bios for the characters originally unveiled from the press launch in January.

Teaser trailers have been playing on the channel for a number of weeks, though a full cast/clips style version has yet to air (both the BBC and Starz have shown a couple of clips in general promotional showreels).

Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman)

Jack looks like a hero. He's handsome, witty and subversive with a killer smile. But there's a reason for that glint in his eye. His dashing style hides a secret. Truth is Jack Harkness is immortal, the only one of his kind. He once ran the Torchwood Institute, a British organization dedicated to fighting the strange and bizarre. But Torchwood closed down, and Jack disappeared to start yet another of his many new lives. When a new, epic danger affects the whole planet, Jack finds himself back at the center of events, fighting not just for his own life, but for everyone on Earth.
Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles)

Gwen once lived the ultimate double life – the funny, salty, earthy woman who loves home and family, combined with the tough, ruthless warrior, who loves the thrill of the fight. She was the heart and soul of an organization called Torchwood. She was a defender of the human race. But now she lives in seclusion, with her devoted husband Rhys and baby Anwen, knowing that one day trouble will come calling again. When events surrounding "Miracle Day" push Gwen to the limit, she'll need to call on resources she never knew she had and make the most terrible decisions, on behalf of all mankind.
Rex Matheson (Mekhi Phifer)

Rex Matheson is a CIA agent at the top of his game. Ruthless, brilliant and destined for fast-track promotion, nothing's going to stop this man from getting whatever he wants in life. But when the world convulses under Miracle Day, Rex discovers that everything he thought was true and safe and fair is now in danger. And when the CIA itself turns against him, Rex finds himself on the run. The only people he can trust are some strangers from a long-lost British institute called Torchwood. Rex finds himself traveling across continents as the scale and ambition of the threat is revealed - but in trying to save the world, will he put his own life at risk once too often?
Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman)

Well-educated and a former school teacher, Oswald's a convicted child killer, both guilty and unrepentant. But when Oswald survives his own execution, he's given a whole new life. The most infamous man in the world, he becomes the most provocative figure in modern media. He's a flare, reviled yet mesmerizing, whose very existence embodies how the world changed on "Miracle Day."
Jilly Kitzinger (Lauren Ambrose)

As a PR woman, Jilly sees how the world spins and instinctively knows how to manipulate her position in it. Ambitious and ruthless, there's little she wouldn't do for her career. A great talent spotter with a dark understanding of human needs, she is unshockable in a world that is increasingly corrupt and boiling. Jilly soon realizes that, in a world gone mad, Oswald Danes could easily become her ticket to power.
Rhys Williams (Kai Owen)

Gwen's husband is loyal, loving and passionate about her. A new father, he is firmly devoted to their daughter Anwen and the unity of their family. They've been through a lot, particularly when Rhys discovered Gwen's secret life working for Torchwood – a world he could barely have imagined. Unafraid to tell Gwen when she's out of line or to say family sometimes needs to come first, Rhys is confident in his relationship with her and carries a grudging respect for Jack. But how much longer can he endure the dangers of Torchwood?
Esther Drummond (Alexa Havins)

Esther is an innocent, in a world of assassins, liars and zealots. She got where she is with the CIA through diligence and application. Hard work keeps Esther focused but she still dreams of active duty as a field agent serving her country. The dream is going to happen faster than she thinks and in no time at all, Esther finds herself running alongside Jack, Gwen and Rex, living off the grid, gun in hand, fighting a global conspiracy against enemies ranging from big business to the state. It's a tough, brutal, hard lifestyle where survival is hard won and life-changing choices have to be made.
Dr Vera Juarez (Arlene Tur)

An attending surgeon in Washington D.C., she's smart, fast talking and hard working, Vera is on the frontline of medical care on "Miracle Day." As the world crisis grows, Vera's surgical and ER experience sees her recruited to advise on government think-tanks. Sexy, confident and passionate, Vera's life is soon inextricably tangled up with Rex's.

Blue Peter TARDIS Winner Materialises

Posted: 11 May 2011 06:15 PM PDT

Back in Ye Olde 2009 flagship children's television show Blue Peter ran a competition for viewers to create their own TARDIS console to appear, full realised, in an episode of Doctor Who- well that episode (Spoiler!)  is The Doctor's Wife.

The winner was Susannah Leah whose  design, chosen by Matt Smith, featured in Tuesday's edition of the show-including a small snippet of the 'Junk TARDIS' in action.

Presenter Helen Skelton guided the clearly embarrassed Leah first to achat with Production Designer Micheal Pickwoad, and then, via the magic of cheating, to the location for her TARDIS' debut scene.

Ah nothing like the palbable air of excitement as you stand in the middle of a 'top secret quarry location' and watch the same scene replayed about a million times over, each time as near identical to the last, until finally someone blinks and calls cut.

What teenager wouldn't love that!

Jealous?

Me?

Yes!

And not only does she get to play a small but important role in the making of what promises to be a fantastic Who episode but she gets her 'Junk Design' design immortalised as a toy thanks to the good people at Character.

The set is likely to be available later in the year.

The whole shebang can be seen below, but be warned, the clip contains about 30 seconds of the episode itself…

Ianto's Back! Maybe…

Posted: 11 May 2011 05:43 PM PDT

Torchwood: Miracle Day might all be about like death and stuff but we know the biggest heartache for fans of the show won't be contemplating mortality in the sunny climes of LA, rather, it is still the moment Ianto (Garth David-Lloyd) bit the big one and joined the choir invisible at the end of Children of Earth.

Ianto's death left a hole in fandom that could only be filled by disbelief and moaning.  So, in a case of having our cake and eating it here is a bit news that will literally rake the soil off Ianto's grave.

As reported on Bleeding Cool, it appears that the LA cast of the show won't just be appearing on Television. In this week's edition of The Radio Drama Newsletter – under its 'in production' banner is listed:

"A new three-part series of Torchwood is in production in LA next week featuring TV cast members and will be heard later in the summer."

Now simultanously, John Horatio Barrowman climbed onto a rooftop in LA, chest proudly puffed out, overcoat billowing in the breeze and howled. The noise carried across the Atlantic to the pricked ears of David-Lloyd who, heart stirring, dropped everything and ran.

Which led to this statement being issued by his band Blue Gillespie via their facebook page:

Unfortunately we have had to pull out of the next round of Live and Unsigned, due to be held in London on 15 May. Gareth has got to go to America for a couple of weeks and the trip unfortunately falls over the time of the gig.

Which is roughly around the time the radio drama will be recording.

Ianto's back!

Well, yes and no, the whole thing could just be a coincidence and its unlikely that Ianto will rise again especially if its only for a radio drama. The likelihood is that it'll be a flashback or an out of continuity 'lost file from Torchwood' deal.

What's even more interesting is this Tweet from Miracle Day writer Jane Espenson:

"Oh! I just got some very good casting news. I'll share when I can."

It seems unlikely and unless there is a valid reason for going back to Jack and Ianto's past other than for personal reflection from the Captain, Unless there's an unseen moment in their lives together that has some significance in the Trans-Atlantic Torchwood then it's difficult not to feel as though any return would just cheapen the shock and the mass outpouring of feelings for Ianto's demise and further the cause of those who wish to see him 'pull a Christ' a return to the living – just like this article then!

Hmmm cake…
