| T-Shirts, Flatpacks and Vampire Hunters Posted: 16 May 2011 07:48 AM PDT Digging their hands into a whole tombola of Doctor Who nonsense Doctor Who TV has again come up with some winners from a selection of the weird and wonderful. Up first and its a sartorial showdown between Steven Moffat's big bads. Ladies and Gentlemen, in the blue corner, its the statue coming at you, keep your eyelids open for the Weeping Angels! And in the red corner…sorry, what was I saying…? The Silence and the The Weeping Angels will be battling it out in the first annual stare-down competition- coming soon to a t-shirt near you! The fantastic design by Zerobriant will be available tomorrow (Tuesday 17th May) from TeeFury for just 24 hours party people! Like the vampires that his new character seeks to stake David Tennant has risen from a Rex-induced death and sought to again find a place in America's hearts with this, a role in the remake of 80′s craptastic horror film Fright Night. In this first look at the former Tenth Doctor in action we finally get a glimpse of Peter Vincent, a vampire hunting illusionist (played in the original by the late, great Roddy McDowall). The full trailer which features a spectacular one-second clip of Tennant (at around the 2:10 mark) and Colin Farrell's awful dye job is available by clicking Play below… Can you imagine the man hours it would take to construct an actual flatpack TARDIS not unlike this brilliant parody from College Humor (pictured right)? Apparently it'll take an infinte number of dowels, a crank and a whole toolbox full of timey-whimey… The TjARDIS Ikea design also received the Flatpack of the Week award from SFX Spurious Awards panel. The award was set to do to a chest of draws that looked like the Millenium Falcon but it fell through at the last minute (b-dum TISH! – Ed). For more sci-fi themed instruction manuels head over to College Humor. | ||||||||||||||||||

Take a trip to the Wild West in The Gunfighters, when the TARDIS arrives in Tombstone, Arizona in 1881. The Doctor, suffering from toothache, seeks out the local dentist – the notorious Doc Holliday. Tensions are running high between the feuding Clanton family and Doc Holliday, whilst the local lawman, Wyatt Earp, struggles to keep the peace. When legendary gunman Johnny Ringo comes to town, events start to escalate. Can the Doctor, Steven and Dodo do anything to stop the situation getting any worse? Or will there be a gunfight at the OK Corral? In the second story, The Awakening, The TARDIS has brought the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough to the picture postcard English village of Little Hodcome. Tegan has come to visit her grandfather – well known local historian Andrew Verny – but he seems to be missing. The residents of Little Hodcombe, led by the obsessive Sir George Hutchinson, are playing a vicious war game – an exact recreation of a battle of the English Civil War fought there in 1643. As each of the TARDIS crew witnesses a terrifying apparition from the past, the Doctor realises that he faces a far greater menace than the unstable Hutchinson. An ancient and alien force for evil is at work – one which will glory in the slaughter of them all…
| Review: The Time of Angels Mini-Set - Toy Posted: 16 May 2011 04:01 AM PDT Manufacturer: Character Building RRP: &ound;9.99 Release Date: 13th May 2011
Reviewed by: Doctor Who Online Review Posted: 16th May 2011 The second of three currently available Doctor Who Mini-Sets from Character Building that DWO are reviewing, is The Time of Angels Mini-Set. Comprising of just 68 pieces (compared to the Dalek Progenitor Room set which has 118 pieces), and with a build time of around 10 minutes, it's significantly easier to put together, with the larger rocky pieces ready to snap in as one-unit standalone blocks. Although not as enjoyable to build as the Dalek Progenitor Room, The Time of Angels Mini-Set makes up in scale, with five levels of different heights to re-enact scenes with the chilling Weeping Angels. There is a slight variance with the box image (pictured), that represents a platform on one of the centre rocks that you can perch the angel on. On the actual finished product, there is no such ledge - of course, there are plenty of other areas on the Mini-Set for the stone menace to spy its potential victims from. The set includes one pre-assembled Weeping Angel Micro-Figure to play with, which is also available in the blind bags currently available in the shops for &ound;1.99. At just &ound;9.99, it's definitely worth the money, and a lot cheaper than a similar set in size would cost if it had the Lego branding on it.

He talks about earlier TARDIS consoles, Time Lords changing gender, becoming a regular writer, the fate of House, the regeneration rule and more. Q. Why did you use the Tennant era TARDIS as the alternate control room? I would have loved to have seen an earlier version? A. So would I. But I was not able to reach any of the earlier producers in time and ask them to keep their sets up. Because I came up with the story before the Year Four Specials aired, I was able to ask them to keep the Christopher Eccleston TARDIS interior. It stood in the studio for an extra eighteen months, and they lied to anyone who came past about why it was still there.

Reviewed by: Matthew Davis for Doctor Who Online Review Posted: 16th May 2011 What if the search for the Key to Time wasn’t as easy as we once thought? What if the Fourth Doctor and Romana took a few detours along the way? This intriguing idea is a highly appealing factor about this latest Companion Chronicle. Set between The Stones of Blood and The Androids of Tara, The Doctor and Romana arrive in a small quiet village in Norfolk, following a strong signal that will lead them to the next segment of the Key. In their search they stumble into the observatory of former US astronaut and recently widowed Lady Millcent Ferril. Lady Ferr il is a woman with her eyes fixed firmly on the stars, who has created rather grotesque metal sculptures in the gardens of her estate and that is not the only thing that is made of metal. The Lady has plans of a maliciously cosmic kind and she quickly realizes that the Doctor and Romana are the only ones who can help put those plans into action, whether they like it or not. As a two hander between Romana and Lady Ferril, the play’s greatest strength is the point of views given between our heroic protagonist and antagonist. To hear events unfold through the villain of the piece is a lovely idea and Lady Ferril is deliciously evil creation played fantastically by Madeline Potter. To have her as an American character helps with the transition between Romana and Ferril’s grasps of events which can happen quite suddenly and unexpectedly throughout. The Doctor spends some good portions of the story out of sight and the bulk of the narrative falls between the leading ladies. Mary Tamm shines as Romana and her tired slightly annoyed tone at the high jinks of the Doctor are one of the play’s highlights. As a story, it is quite a strange tale but feels genuinely like it could have slotted itself easily into the Key to Time sequence as writer Peter Anghelides captures the feel and tone of that season very well. Lady Millcent’s ability to control metal makes for some rather gruesome moments but the main criticism that I have about this release is the rather confusing and disappointing ending. To reveal the nature of my disappointment would spoil play but let us just say that to have the majority of your play told by two people in hindsight and have one remaining after dispatching the other with no clear resolution is very confusing and a real let down. I kept waiting after the closing music to hear if there would be an epilogue but sadly not and I felt that it might mar a listener’s overall enjoyment of the story as a whole. All in all Ferril’s Folly is a very enjoyable tale, with two excellent performances but it loses marks for its baffling and disappointing ending.

| Posted: 16 May 2011 02:00 AM PDT You probably won't remember much from your next trip to the Doctor Who Experience exhibition in London. Presumably, especially if you've been there before and have already seen the other Whoniverse artifacts, you'll spend much of your visit staring at the Silence, so that when you finally decide to leave, it'll be like you were never there! See, the prophecy given by Prisoner Zero at the very beginning of Matt Smith's tenure, "Silence will fall," has proven to be quite accurate. The Silence really did fall. They fell so hard that in order to make it in the present economy, they have to stand around as museum attractions just to rake in a few extra quid. The BBC hopes this addition to the Doctor Who Experience will increase ticket sales to repeat attendees who show up again (and again) simply because they forgot they already went. We Kasterborites have doubted for a while now that we've seen the last of the Silence in the TV series, and Matt Smith is doing nothing to convince us otherwise. Upon being asked if the Silence will be the next great iconic enemy for Doctor Who, Smith said:
Ahem. The WHOLE narrative. They didn't all die in 1969 America. You don't have to wait for their next TV appearance if you want proof of that. You can see some 2011 Silence right here in the UK at the Doctor Who Experience in London's Olympia 2 venue. Ticketing information can be found at the exhibition website. | Posted: 16 May 2011 01:12 AM PDT A Doctor Who fan is seeking approval for a full-size replica of the tardis to be installed on a Kent seafront. Local prop-maker Jason Onion said it had been his vision for Herne Bay for 32 years, since he was aged three. He said it would be in recognition of BBC scriptwriter Anthony Coburn, who lived in the resort and conceived the idea of a police box as a time machine. Mr Onion said a 9ft (2.7m) blue box would be a good excuse to get "coach-loads of people down to Herne Bay". "I feel that there's a lot going for Herne Bay - there's a lot of rich heritage for this town," he said. Mr Onion said he was planning other things for the town over the next couple of years in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. "I'm donating a full size replica of the 1963 version of the tardis to Children in Need and also to Herne Bay library, so it's all going to be linked up together. "When fans think of Doctor Who, they are going to think of Herne Bay too. "It's the best programme in the world ever. It encompasses everything, and it draws everybody in," he said. Mr Onion said he would be talking to council officials about his plans over the next couple of weeks. [Source: BBC News]

| Rebel Flesh Preview & Gallery Posted: 15 May 2011 10:48 PM PDT If you thought that there were dark elements in The Doctor's Wife, you haven't seen anything yet… This week, the Doctor, Amy and Rory encounter The Rebel Flesh, a story about cloning set in Earth's future. Starring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as the Doctor, Amy and Rory, the episode also features guest appearances by Marshall Lancaster (Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) and Sarah Smart (At Home with the Braithwaites, in which she starred with Peter Davison). The episode is the first of a two-part adventure by Matthew Graham (Fear Her, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) A solar tsunami sends the TARDIS hurtling towards a futuristic factory on Earth, where human doppelgangers are used to mine dangerous acid, as the time-travelling adventures continue. A second wave hits and the "Gangers" separate. They can remember every second of their "original's" life and feel every emotion they've ever experienced. But are these memories stolen or have they been bequeathed? Are the Gangers merely faulty machinery that must be shut down or are they living, breathing, sentient beings? Can the Doctor convince the terrified humans to accept these "almost people" and prevent an all-out civil war before the factory explodes? And here, thanks to the BBC, are a selection of images that you might enjoy…
The Rebel Flesh airs at the much more adult time of 6.45 pm this Saturday, 21st May on BBC One and BBC HD, and at the usual time on BBC America.
| Posted: 15 May 2011 10:29 PM PDT The Doctor's Wife had an Appreciation Index or AI of 87. The score was the second highest of Saturday night on the four main channels with only The Comedy Genius of John Sullivan on BBC Two scoring higher. The Appreciation Index, or AI is a measure of how much the audience enjoyed the programme. It is a score out of 100 based on responses from a 5,000 strong panel. A score above 85 is considered excellent. On Sunday two programmes had higher overnight viewing figures than Doctor Who, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Countryfile, pushing Doctor Who into 22nd place on overnight figures. Final figures will be released next week. The BBC Three repeat had 0.57 million viewers. | ||||||||||||||||||

| The Doctor's Wife Overnight(s)! Posted: 15 May 2011 09:05 PM PDT You watched it, he watched it, she watched it – even the guy you want to trip over in the canteen watched it! However it would seem that once again not everybody watched The Doctor's Wife "live" on Saturday night as it went out, with overnight figures indicating that only 5.9 million viewers tuned in. We had expected the words "Neil" and "Gaiman" to bring in extra views, but hopefully the episode has received plenty of delayed views (such as Sky+) over the weekend to bump up the figures to the 8 million mark. While there might be concerns that The Curse of the Black Spot might have discouraged some from tuning in this week, there is a chance that having the below-par dancing competition on either side of Doctor Who is helping matters as much as flanking it with dancing and the risible Don't Scare the Hare. Once again, Doctor Who failed to be the top rated show of Saturday evening, with The Eurovision Song Contest attracting an incredible and mind-bloggling 9.5 million (have you seen it?!) while Britain's Got Talent saw 8.4 million viewers tune in to watch people look silly to sad music and moderately talented people look like gods to amazing music and camera editing. |
