| Posted: 17 May 2011 05:47 AM PDT Promotion efforts for The Rebel Flesh seem to be pretty energetic, and thanks to the BBC we've got another great gallery of images of the next episode of Doctor Who. Guest starring Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes actor Marshall Lancaster (he played DC Chris Skelton), The Rebel Flesh is written by Matthew Graham, co-creator on the time travelling/limbo cop drama set in the 1970s and 1980s. If you're somehow unaware, The Rebel Flesh deals with the matter of "accidental cloning", where a group of creatures created from living matter and controlled by humans end up becoming sentient and sharing the memories and personalities of the people pulling their strings…
You can catch The Rebel Flesh at 6.45 pm this Saturday, 21st May on BBC One and BBC HD, and at 9/8c on BBC America.

| Posted: 17 May 2011 03:27 AM PDT The remarkable Neil Gaiman took part in an online web chat for The Guardian yesterday, answering questions asked by fans concerning his relationship with Doctor Who and, of course, The Doctor's Wife. Just to get a measure of the man, before he even started, Gaiman had this to say:
What a nice guy! He has obviously made his mark among Doctor Who fandom, and while he many not contribute again I don't think he or his episode will be forgotten. It seems that Gaiman put a lot of work into The Doctor's Wife, possibly to the detriment of other projects:
The last snippet we want to focus on is Gaiman's beginnings for the story. It seems like it was so simple an idea, one that surprisingly had never been attempted even in novels and audio adventures, and the writer's development of the tale seems quite interesting.
There is much more from Gaiman over at the Guardian, via the link above!
| Posted: 17 May 2011 03:03 AM PDT Fantom Films have released the autobiography of Fred Hamilton, a film cameraman at the BBC who also worked on Doctor Who during the Troughton/Pertwee years for stories including The Enemy of the World, The Daemons and Planet of the Spiders. Full details on the book may be found on their website. Fred Hamilton - Zoom In When You See The Tears30 Adventurous Years at the BBC After emigrating to Britain in the 1950s, Fred Hamilton joined the BBC's Film Department where he learnt the ropes and was quickly promoted to Film Cameraman. Coverage of sports events soon became his bread and butter job, followed by assignments to armed conflict areas in many parts of the world. Obtaining footage to be broadcast on Panorama and other current-affairs programmes often under perilous circumstances. He teamed up with reporter James Mossman and recordist Freddy Downton, surviving the jungles of Borneo, the battlefields of Vietnam and the Middle East. As a member of the Film Department, he would be called to take part in various projects including iconic shows such as Doctor Who, starring Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee, as well as a numerous episodes of Z Cars, Out of the Unknown, Doomwatch, Colditz and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. With colour television still in its infancy, Fred filmed the eye-opening sequences for Paul Temple with directors Douglas Camfield and Mike Ferguson. In 1977 he was brought in by director David Wickes as establishing cameraman on the BBC's ambitious first all-film television series Target, whose production history was almost as spectacular as the on-screen events depicted. Fred became a man for 'action scenes' before the phrase even entered the BBC vocabulary, always on the lookout for that unusual, extra dynamic shot. Committing his memories of an impressively colourful professional life to paper, Fred Hamilton tells the story of a man totally dedicated to his job, whose accounts are enriched by hilarious anecdotes involving many BBC legends. This autobiography is a fascinating insider's view of the BBC, lavishly illustrated throughout with never before seen, exclusive photographs from Fred's personal archives (with thanks to Dexter O'Neill) Aurum Press are to release the biography of Terry Nation on the 25th May; the book by Alwyn Turner looks into the writer's prolific career during the 1960s and 1970s scripting for fantasy series, and his involvement with comedian Tony Hancock and Associated London Scripts. The Man Who Invented the DaleksThe Strange Worlds of Terry Nation Terry Nation was one of the most successful and prolific writers for television that Britain ever produced. Survivors, his vision of a post-apocalyptic England, so haunted audiences in the Seventies that the BBC revived it over thirty years on. Blake's 7, constantly rumoured for return, endures as a cult sci-fi classic. And his most fearsome creations, the Daleks, ensured and at times eclipsed the success of Doctor Who. Indeed, almost half a century after their first appearance, new additions to Dalek mythology continue to top the Saturday-night ratings, while the word itself has entered the Oxford English Dictionary, passing into the language as the name of the most famous race of aliens in fiction. But while his genocidal pepper pots brought him notoriety and riches, Nation played a much wider role in British broadcasting's golden age. As part of the legendary Associated London Scripts, he wrote for Spike Milligan, Frankie Howerd and an increasingly troubled Tony Hancock. And as one of the key figures behind the adventure series of the Sixties – including The Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders! – he turned the pulp classics of his boyhood into a major British export. Like Arthur Conan Doyle before him, Nation was frequently bemused by the appeal of his most famous creations, and similarly cavalier toward them. Now, The Man Who Invented the Daleks explores their curious and contested origins, and sheds light on a strange world of ambitious young writers, producers and performers without whom British culture today would look very different. Alwyn W. Turner is the author of a number of acclaimed books on modern British culture, including Crisis? What Crisis?: Britain in the 1970s, Rejoice! Rejoice!: Brtain in the 1980s, Halfway to Paradise and The Biba Experience. The book was serialised by the Daily Mail at the beginning of the month, and also reviewed by the paper last Friday. Author Alwyn Turner will also be appearing at the Deansgate Super SF Saturday in the Manchester Waterstones on the 21st May, alongside Doctor Who writer Nev Fountain for "a discussion of all things Gallifrey". | 6.5: The Rebel Flesh - DWO Spoiler Free Preview Posted: 16 May 2011 11:17 PM PDT DWO have seen 6.5: The Rebel Flesh and have put our spoiler-free preview together: If you thought following Episode Two was difficult, put yourself in Matthew Graham's shoes as The Rebel Flesh has to carry the baton that the unbelievably popular The Doctor's Wife left behind. Fortunately, you have no time to reminisce and compare, as you are immediately drawn into the adventure, which pulls you in from the opening shot. In fact, so different is this story in contrast to its precursor, that it's literally impossible to compare. It's no secret that the story is centred around clones - a subject matter that Doctor Who history knows only too well, but this time around there is so much more to the concept that plunders emotional and moral depths in such a way that will have you questioning who you feel for most. Perhaps most of all, this is a story about consequences and trust - something that not only echoes the plot, but the entire Steven Moffat era of Doctor Who to date. Matthew Graham has carved his name into addictive and gripping drama; two elements that sum up this adventure perfectly. Those of you who have seen Life on Mars or Ashes to Ashes, will also know just how much life he can breathe into characters in just a few lines of dialogue. And its no different here. Rory has so much more to do in this adventure, and it's rewarding to see so many more facets of his character that enable Arthur Darvill to really sink his teeth into the role. In fact, in this first portion of the two-part adventure, Amy very much seems to take a bit of a backseat, which leads to a refreshing change of dynamic. As with all the episode previews for Series 6 thus far, don't expect us to cater you with plot details, as even the tiniest morsel might give away too much. What we can tell you is that there are lots of corridors, a little bit of running and several cases of mistaken identity, that will leave you wondering who's who. There's also a cliffhanger that will have you on the edge of your seat, and devoid of fingernails. Graham's rather understated previous Doctor Who outing, Fear Her, may not have hit the right notes with certain circles of Doctor Who Fandom, but The Rebel Flesh, is set to secure his place in Doctor Who lore as a master storyteller who bridges the classic series with the new, seamlessly. Something is building here, you really feel it, and as we make our way to the centre point of the series, you cant help feeling if we are halfway out of the dark, or halfway out of the light. 5 things to look out for… - The unforgettable sound of Dusty Springfield. - "Behold! A Cockerill! I love a Cockerill!" - The TARDIS gets that sinking feeling. - A lot can go wrong in an hour. - We find out The Doctor's shoe size!
