Exclusive Rebel Flesh Preview

Posted: 20 May 2011 08:44 AM PDT

Warning – This is a preview of a forthcoming Doctor Who episode. It contains the official synopsis of the episode taken from official BBC PR. It does not contain any spoilers and serves to wet appetites but would advise that if you don't want to know a thing about this Saturday's episode then look away…NOW!

"I never thought I'd get to say that again!"

Last week's totally stonking episode was always going to be a hard act to follow. I wonder how many feel that the series has peaked now? I know I feared that The Doctor's Wife had raised the bar just a tad too far for others to follow, but this, the first of a two part adventure does give it a very good run for its money in a totally different way.

A solar tsunami sends the TARDIS hurtling towards a futuristic factory on Earth, where human doppelgangers are used to mine dangerous acid. A second wave hits and the "Gangers" separate. They can remember every second of their "original's" life and feel every emotion they've ever experienced. But are these memories stolen or have they been bequeathed? Are the Gangers merely faulty machinery that must be shut down or are they living, breathing, sentient beings?

There's something reassuringly retro about this episode, not in the acting but the feel and tone of the story. This could have easily spawned from the Pertwee or early Tom Baker eras as it's a surreal but very honest sci-fi adventure. If you don't believe me just listen to the score and look at the acid suits.

A sci-fi lovers dream, this takes Doctor Who back into the sort of story standalone sort of adventure that keeps it moving as a series. The "Gangers" are an excellent idea so full kudos to the team for giving us a race of intelligent inventions. The "Gangers" ensemble are littered with actors with broad accents that allows for some wonderful moments of humour and heart. It did, at first remind me slightly of the two-part Silurian adventure from last year but there's enough going on here for it not to linger too long. The effects are ramped up again and allow for rather awesome and sinister moments.

Obviously the story (being a two-parter) is very dialogue driven, but not a lot of speech is wasted and nearly every scene advance the story on. Rory accepts more of a lead here with Amy taking a bit of a backseat, good plan as I feel the character needs a bit of a rest. Look out for slight nods of satire at the start too, nice touch. As for the Doctor, well Matt Smith is just a joy from start to finish.

Add to all this a smart cliff-hanger and you have a great, traditional piece of Who that will satisfy not only the casual but the hard to please fan too.

The Rebel Flesh Preview

Posted: 20 May 2011 08:05 AM PDT

SFX have published a great interview with The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People writer Matthew Graham about his upcoming episodes, which have a splash of traditional Doctor Who and a hint of The Thing and Alien about them, mixed up some legitimate moral questions combined with some good old-fashioned scares.

Back in 2006, Fear Her hinted at trouble to come for the Tenth Doctor and Rose, and in the following episode we saw the invasion of both the Cybermen and the Daleks. It seems that this time around, Steven Moffat has imposed nothing on the story, other than what Matthew recalls from a mass biscuit-eating exercise:

"Really, all that Steven said was, "I want a two-parter, and I'm going to do something cataclysmically big in episode seven, and I want five and six to build towards seven. And there may be something I need you to do at the end of six that will lead you into seven, but I haven't nailed it down in my own mind yet exactly how it's going to be.""

Graham reckons the story will allow him to put to bed the feeling that Fear Her was a missed opportunity back in 2006, something that must be tricky to deal with. However, the Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes co-creator is back with a new story that interestingly sits in a similar position in the series run.

"It's only adults that worry about it being too scary for children. Children love it. And it's hard to scare kids these days because the average video game is scarier than most Doctor Who episodes from the '60s and '70s. But it's scary in simple ways. It's not scary in terms of violence. It's scary in terms of staring eyes. I mean, if you don't like staring eyes, do not watch episode six. It's eyeballs-a-go-go in episode six. I should have called it "Eyeballs-A-Go-Go"."

Thanks to the delightful hangover from The Doctor's Wife earlier this week, we've so far omitted to feature any trailers from The Rebel Flesh, so let's resolve that right now…

First up, the official BBC trailer…

And the BBC America trailer:

There are also three clips from the episode, featured here thanks to the efforts of DoctorWhoTV…

The Rebel Flesh airs at 6.45 pm on BBC One and BBC HD and on BBC America at 8/9c. We're interested to see just how well this episode fairs after the success of Neil Gaiman's The Doctor's Wife.

Would you envy anyone having to follow that?

Catherine Tate in 'The Office' Catherine Tate guest starred on The Office (US) last night as Nellie Bertram, a potential replacement for the departing boss of Dunder Mifflin, Michael Scott (Steve Carell). The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Tate could make her appearance a permanent one; reporting that she "is said to be the top choice of the show's producers, though her ability to take the job is in question due to her current theater commitment.".

John Barrowman will be a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance on Saturday, 21 May 2011, to help find Britain's favourite dancer. The show airs live at 5.35pm on BBC One, with the results show at 7.30pm. Barrowman said:
"This is such an amazing opportunity – I met all these guys when I was a guest judge at the Choreography Camp rounds a few months back, and I can't wait to come back and see how they have improved and developed as performers. It's going to be great now it's down to the top ten dancers - the competition is getting hotter."

English singer-songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor has revealed on her Twitter page that she would like a role in Doctor Who.

Filming has begun for Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' Sherlock. The three x 90-minute films are written by Moffat, Gatiss and Steve Thompson (The Curse of the Black Spot) and directed by Euros Lyn. Moffat said:
"Mark and I have been talking about this project for years, on long train rides to Cardiff for Doctor Who. Quite honestly, we'd still be talking about it if Sue Vertue of Hartswood Films (conveniently also my wife) hadn't sat us down for lunch and got us to work."

Bruce Forsyth has agreed a £500,000 deal with the BBC to return to Strictly Come Dancing to co-host the next series of the show alongside Tess Daly. John Barrowman had expressed his interested in hosting the show if Forsyth decided to retire. He told the Daily Mail that on the possibility of hosting the dance show: "If [Bruce Forsyth] were to offer those dancing shoes to me, I would gladly take them. It would be an incredible gig.".

Why Does Rory Die?

Posted: 20 May 2011 12:57 AM PDT

Could the weekly demise of Rory Pond be down to the creative machination of The Grand Moff?

The Rebel Flesh writer Matthew Graham certainly thinks so! Speaking to SFX, Graham reveals that he suspects the Doctor Who showrunner is killing Rory for a reason.

"Does he (Rory) die in every episode? I suppose he does! He does die a lot. That's a good point. You know what, with any other showrunner I'd say, 'Oh, I don't know, they probably don't know what they're doing.' But if anyone has a masterplan about Rory's multiple deaths, it'll be Steven. But I will be the last to know."

Whether or not this is a veiled reference to Rory dying at some point in Graham's two-part adventure isn't really a spoiler, as there has only been two episodes (that we can think of) in which Rory hasn't gone for a Burton.

As for the supposition that Steven Moffat has an ulterior motive for killing Rory… well, might he just dislike him…?

Your Very Own Cardboard Army

Posted: 20 May 2011 12:32 AM PDT

A Christmas Carol may have long since passed, but we can't forget the great Kasterborous dream: for each of us to have our very own Katherine Jenkins to bring home with us!

That dream is now one step closer to reality with Forbidden Planet's new life-size cardboard standup of Abigail Pettigrew (as played by Jenkins) from the most recent Doctor Who Christmas special!  This Katherine cutout folds for easy storage so that you too can lock her up in a freezer, and take her out again whenever you're in the mood for a shark sleigh ride!  Or you can take a picture of yourself with Miss Jenkins and upload it to Facebook to prove to all your mates that you can find a really hot girlfriend, even if you are a geeky Doctor Who fan with a bit too many action figures!

Er… 'scuse me…

Yes, sir?  Yes.  Sure.  All right – hang on – WOT?!  You want me to believe there's more to Doctor Who than beautiful blonde opera singers?  What sort of rubbish news site is this anyway?  Well, if you insist.  But I still want that raise!

Amy Pond cardboard standupAhem… management wishes me to inform you that there are more important things to write about than one of the most gorgeous girls on the planet… so instead I'll write about the other one of the most gorgeous girls on the planet.

It's been a whole six days since the last episode of Doctor Who, but we can't forget the great Kasterborous dream: for each of us to have our very own Karen Gillan to bring home with us!

That dream is now one step closer to reality with Forbidden Planet's new life-size cardboard standup of Amy Pond (as played by Gillan) from the most recent Doctor Who Christmas special!  This Karen cutout folds for easy storage so that you too can lock her up in the TARDIS and make her think her husband died wanting to kill her!

Copying and pasting with some word adjustments aside, Forbidden Planet is preparing to release about a million cardboard standees of various Doctor Who characters, notably including the aforementioned Abigail Pettigrew and Amy Pond (complete with policewoman outfit), the Eleventh Doctor (in the Stetson or wedding outfit varieties), and River Song as seen in her Utah attire from The Impossible Astronaut. In addition to those, keep an eye out for the Silence and the Ninth Doctor.  Rory seems to not exist yet again as Forbidden Planet appears to have opted not to immortalize him in glorious two dimensions.  All of these standees will be made available on June 16th, and you can save a fiver by pre-ordering at each character's respective link for £24.99 (RRP £29.99).

Here's the complete listing of every Forbidden Planet full-sized cardboard standee that exists or will exist, which includes Daleks, David Tennant's Tenth Doctor, and even the TARDIS!
