Torchwood: The Complete Original UK Series (USA)

Posted: 19 May 2011 09:42 AM PDT

BBC/Warner Home Video have announced that the first three series of Torchwood will be released as one complete boxed set in both Blu-Ray and DVD formats in the United States:
The BBC's Torchwood is such a hit on U.S. television, breaking ratings records for BBC America and acclaimed by critics as "sci-fi with attitude" (Chicago Tribune) and "one of TV's most entertainment of sci-fi romps" (USA Today), that it is being remade for U.S. cable network Starz. Timed to coincide with the premiere of the new series on Starz, BBC will bring together the complete, original UK series in this comprehensive box set.

Separate from the government, outside the police, beyond the United Nations, Torchwood sets its own rules. Led by the enigmatic, ever watchful Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman, Doctor Who, Central Park West), the Torchwood team delves into the unknown and fights the impossible. Everyone who works for Torchwood is young. Some say that's because it's a new science. Others say it's because they die young.

The series have previously been available individually in both formats, and though not specified it is believed the new boxed set repackages the original material from the earlier releases.

Torchwood: The Complete Original UK Series is due out in the United States on 19th July.

Torchwood: The Collection (Series 1-3) is still available to purchase in the United Kingdom in both DVD and Bluray formats.

Sophie to Follow Mother's Footsteps?

Posted: 19 May 2011 06:11 AM PDT

Pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor – best known for her unique facial features, her hit "Murder on the Dance Floor" and being the daughter of former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis – has revealed that she would like to play a monster in Doctor Who.

On her Twitter account @SophieEB earlier today, the striking brunette (and sometimes blonde) commented:

"Ambition thought of the day: I would love to play an alien on Dr Who. No prosthetics required!"

If she were to appear in the series, Sophie would complete an interesting double. Her mother Janet appeared in 1979′s The Horns of Nimon as Teka opposite Doctor Who legend Tom Baker. Additionally, Ellis also presented the BBC children's series Jigsaw, on which one Sylvester McCoy was a regular face!

Obviously Ellis-Bextor has tweeted what countless celebrities and out of work performers dream about – a chance to re-ignite their careers with a stint on a popular Saturday evening TV show.

Whether she's successful or not is a matter for a group of people in Wales…

Series 6 opener “most recorded show of all time”

Posted: 19 May 2011 04:19 AM PDT

The Impossible Astronaut has been named as the UK's most recorded television event of all time! According to Kantar Media, Series 6's opening episode was recorded by a record breaking 4.11million people, who went on to watch it within the first week of its transmission. The last programme to hold the record was the 2010 Christmas Day [...]

Record Breaking Astronaut!

Posted: 19 May 2011 04:18 AM PDT

Remember those disappointing initial figures for Doctor Who Series 6 opener The Impossible Astronaut which were then improved as a final 8.86 million total?

Well it seems that among those viewers, a massive 4.1 million watched the thrilling episode via a delayed viewing service, typically Sky+. Not only is this typical of the way the UK as a nation are watching TV these days, it is also a record!

Analysis of the BARB data has been performed by Kantar Media, who have placed the episode higher than the Christmas Day delayed viewings of Come Fly With Me.

Kantar Media Audiences' Dalia Gereis reckons that this news comes as no surprise, which itself isn't any shock to us but it might be something of a revelation to various elements of the UK press.

"With the continued growth of hard drive recording devices like Sky+, it's no surprise that all the episodes of these top 10 recorded shows come from the last three years.

"Increasingly viewers are using their own 'time travel' abilities to watch TV shows when they want them – this particularly applies to dramas and 'must see' reality shows. Given that these figures do not include data from online catch up services like BBC iPlayer and ITVplayer, it is clear that judging a show's performance just by looking at it's overnight viewing figures is unlikely to give the full picture."

Clearly this is quite a result, and if there was any lingering doubts that Doctor Who is any less popular than it was 3 years ago, they should be cast aside and burned, unbelievers.

The Impossible Astronaut - most recorded TV show of all time

Posted: 19 May 2011 03:48 AM PDT

Audience measurement service Kantar Media have reported that the opening episode of the new series of Doctor Who, The Impossible Astronaut, was the most recorded television event of all time (so far!).

Statistial analysis of the BARB data revealed that 4.11 million viewers 'time-shifted' their watching of the programme, either through VOSDAL ("viewing on same day as live") or during the following week. The final total audience recorded for the episode was 8.9 million, indicating that some 46% of the audience did not watch the programme "live".

The previous record for time-shifted viewing was held by the Christmas Day episode of the Matt Lucas/David Walliams mockumentary series Come Fly With Me.

Dalia Gereis, the Commercial Director for Kantar Media Audiences, said:

The Impossible Astronaut 'Most Recorded TV Show of All Time'

Posted: 19 May 2011 03:17 AM PDT

The first episode of this year's Doctor Who, 6.1: The Impossible Astronaut, was the most recorded TV event of all time, according to Kantar Media.

An analysis of BARB data shows that record-breaking numbers of viewers recorded the programme. A total of 8.9 million viewers watched the programme, making it the sixth most viewed show of the week.

Within that figure, 4.1 million viewers chose to time-shift the show by watching a recording of the show either later that day or in the following week.

The figure easily beat the previous record holder, the 2010 Christmas day episode of Come Fly With Me. Other shows likely to have viewers reaching for the record button to ensure they are not missed include reality TV shows like The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, along with comedy favourites like The Royle Family, according to Kantar.

Dalia Gereis, commercial director at Kantar Media Audiences, said: "With the continued growth of hard drive recording devices like Sky+, it's no surprise that all the episodes of these top 10 recorded shows come from the last three years.

"Increasingly viewers are using their own 'time travel' abilities to watch TV shows when they want them - this particularly applies to dramas and 'must see' reality shows. The Art and Science of Time Travel

Posted: 18 May 2011 11:24 PM PDT

Here's a date for your diary: on Friday, 10th June, at 18.30, I'll be appearing at the British Library, alongside authors Stephen Baxter and Audrey Niffenegger, science writer John Gribbin and publisher Jo Fletcher, in a ninety minute wonder entitled The Art and Science of Time Travel. Tickets cost £7.50/£5.00.

The panel is part of Out of this World, the Library's amazing new exhibition devoted to SF, which opens tomorrow and runs all summer, and which I'm looking forward to taking a leisurely stroll through. The BL has already been very supportive of the Clarke Awards, and this exhibition adds to this season's interesting sense of encounter between our genre and mainstream culture. I hope I'll see you there.

Speaking of SF, I also contributed a bit of punditry to the Handicapping the Hugos issue of the fanzine The Drink Tank (the link takes you straight into it), which, with the aid of Lauren Beukes, Mike Carey and Bryan Talbot, attempts to set odds on who might win this year's Awards. If only a bookmaker would do the same. I'd lose a fortune.

And finally, as a couple of you were kind enough to note in the comments, Dr. Faiza Hussain, my character from Captain Britain and MI-13, is mentioned in this edition of the radio show Here and Now.

I'll blog my panel list for the Phoenix Comic Convention after this weekend. I think that today I may very well get to write 'The End' on the novel, although the real end will come a long while later, once I've gone back through the book dealing with a huge list of issues. On Friday night, we're flying off for a weekend in Moscow, so those on the Twitter feed may see some pictures. Until next time, then, Cheerio!

5 Questions with... Richard Clark - Interview

Posted: 18 May 2011 11:17 PM PDT

DWO recently caught up with New Series Doctor Who Director, Richard Clark, who spared us some time for a quick interview:

When you found out you would be directing the hotly anticipated Neil Gaiman episode, what was your first reaction, and how much input did he have?

I was absolutely thrilled. The Sandman blew me away when I first came across it and I loved American Gods. Having said that I hadn't been aware of this episode or any of the feverish anticipation surrounding it. And frankly I'm glad. The first I knew of Neil's script when it landed on my desk with his name on it, so I just approach it as I would any other story.

As for Neil's input, well I guess the honest answer would be very little. Like all good writers he understands that once you pass a script to a director you're in some ways saying goodbye. A writer's responsibility ends at the words on the page. It's then the director's job to turn those words into a walking, talking visual exciting reality, on time and on budget.

However what did inevitably happen is that, because of our practical restraints, we did go back to Neil on several occasions to see if he could write us out of a corner. Hence there are a number of scenes, characters, locations and dialogue that never made the final film.

3.3: Gridlock, 3.6: The Lazarus Experiment, 6.4: The Doctor's Wife - Which has been the most challenging of all the Doctor Who stories you have directed to date and why?

Tricky one. Either Gridlock or The Doctor's Wife. In both cases you've got to create an entire alien world which is always a challenge. Gridlock had some very elaborate CGI work - David Tennant jumping from car to car and the Macra snapping at Martha's vehicle.

However there was a visual ambition to The Doctor's Wife that we all just really went for. Just take the lighting for example (Owen McPollin was my wonderful DP). We tried to use it to really tell the story which meant we had all sorts of complex lighting changes going on all the time (look at when the Tardis first lands on the planet). And then the production design was a massive undertaking. Infact I'm n ot sure Dr Who hasn't seen sets built on that scale before.

When it comes to directing actors, do you prefer minimal input so that they bring more to the table or a more hands-on approach to get more out of them?

For me directing actors is about instinct. You have to get a feel for who they are and how they work. They all have different approaches and need supporting, encouraging or guiding in different ways. Matt for example knows his character, but I wanted this to be a really emotional episode for him (as did he) and so it was about teasing that out of him. However Suranne, as a guest on the show, had to create a character from scratch. In that case I had a clear idea of what that should be so it was very much about giving her the confidence to go for it. It was very ballsy of her to trust me because, had I got it wrong, she would have been the focus of fans anger!

The other thing I should add is that actor's spark off each other and affect each other's performance. They create possibilities that you as a director couldn't have imagined.

Bearing in mind DWO is a non-spoiler site, what can you tell us about your upcoming episode written by Mark Gatiss?

Almost nothing I guess! Except to say that I absolutely love it. It's very creepy (young viewers might well need a cushion to hide behind). Oh and Danny Mays is brilliant. Great chemistry with Matt.

Finally, if you could have one round trip in the TARDIS, anywhere in time and space, where would you go and why?

Now that's tricky.

Either I'd take a trip into the future, say 2000 years after mankind first inhabits another planet, and go to the planet with the most established human civilization but furthest from earth, just to see where we're all heading. OR. I'd go to the most advanced alien civilization that exists right now and see if they know about us.

[We also asked Richard another question in case he couldn't answer Question 4. The reply was so good, we have included it below]

Owing to the huge success of The Doctor's Wife, and your clearly successful partnership with Neil Gaiman, is there any possibility of a future collaboration in Doctor Who between the pair of you?

Neil and I would love to collaborate on something together. And we'd love to collaborate on another Dr Who. (a feature?) But the t ruth is it's not up to us. With Steven Moffat, Beth Willis and Piers Wenger in charge the show is in very capable hands and they will make the right choices about how to keep it moving forwards.

But I have to say I'd love to direct a Dr Who episode for each new Doctor across my lifetime!

Cursed by your genes to stand around corporate shindigs while Terry from Sales gawps at you, to work the room while brandishing a prop or two like the only man told it was a cosplay night; to point your face at anyone who's vaguely interested before being quietly dismissed with a: "Oh, yeah. Kinda."

At least you can hate clowns. I just feel sorry for the guy who looks like Elton John picking at the vol-au-vents or the girl who looks like Angelina Jolie being hit on by Terry the sales rep…

A Telford man has set himself up for a life of scrutiny by telling the Shropshire Star that he bares a passing resemblance to the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith.

Russell Bridgman, 24, made the fatal connection shortly after Smith had been chosen to be the Doctor. A resemblance that was confirmed by his friends and family who picked up on Russell's habit of wearing bow ties (it must be true!), something he claims to have done since childhood.

But the transformation wasn't complete. Russell's hair was too short so he underwent a radical process to massage the folicals in order to speed up hair…oh, okay he sat around and grew his hair:

"Then I started to get asked by little kids and their parents if I was actually the Doctor.
I was walking down the road and this little kid came up to me and said 'Excuse me, excuse me, are you Dr Who?' I didn't want to disappoint him so I said I was. He then ran off and shouted 'Mum, mum, it's Dr Who'.
It's fun."

And hopfully Russell, who is by trade a gardener, can successfully 'plough' (do gardeners plough?) a new career as a professional shadow:

"I want to start doing a bit of look-alike work and I have been contacted by a couple of agencies, but nothing is for definite yet."

Personally, i think he looks more like Brasseye creator Chris Morris…

Oh, yeah. Kinda.

How much of the story is yours and how much of it was material you had to include as part of the commission – Steven Moffat going, "We need this at this point in the season"? That's a good question. There was very little from Steven initially. ...

The Time Warrior Set - Toy Exclusive

Posted: 18 May 2011 08:36 PM PDT

Forbidden Planet have teamed up with Character Options for another Exclusive Doctor Who Toy.

The Time Warrior Set recreates a scene from the Classic Series 3rd Doctor adventure, The Time Warrior.

Journalist Sarah Jane Smith covertly gains access to a research centre where top scientists are being held in protective custody whilst UNIT investigates the disappearance of a number of their colleagues. The missing scientists have been kidnapped by a Sontaran, Linx, and taken back to medieval England, where they are working under hypnosis to repair his crashed spaceship.

The Third Doctor follows in the TARDIS, and Sarah Jane stows away. In return for shelter, Linx has provided a robber baron called Irongron with anachronistically advanced weapons to use in attacks on neighbouring castles.

The Doctor helps Sir Edward of Wessex to repel one such attack, then he and Sarah Jane conspire to drug the food in Irongron's kitchens so that the weapons can be removed while the men are unconscious. Aided by one of the kidnapped scientists, Rubeish, he then sends the others back to the 20th Century using Linx's primitive time travel equipment.

Linx shoots Irongron down and gets ready to leave in his repaired ship. Hal, one of Sir Edward's archers, fires an arrow into the vulnerable probic vent at the back of his neck, killing him. The Doctor, Sarah Jane and Hal escape just before the ship explodes, destroying the castle.

In this exclusive set, Forbidden Planet present the Classic Sontaran: Commander Linx and his iconic Sontaran space ship along with the Third Doctor in Green Jacket and Sonic Screwdriver.

TARDIS for Kent

Posted: 18 May 2011 08:30 PM PDT

There are many statues and points of reference in the UK to teach travellers and locals about important historical figures or events. But despite the fact that Doctor Who is a national institution in the UK and despite the fact that it has been active in one form or another for the last 48 years, there is nothing to symbolise that for all to see, in the way that Nelson's Column is there to remind us of the Battle of Trafalgar.

One Doctor Who fan has decided that enough is enough and is trying to get a full size replica of the good ship TARDIS erected in the town of Herne Bay in Kent at its seafront.

Jason Onion, a local prop maker, has had this idea since an early age and is spurred on even more by the fact that the writer of the very first Doctor Who adventure Anthony Coburn, who wrote An Unearthly Child, lived in the area when he came up with his wonderful ideas.

Mr Onion's mission statement is very simple, he wants fans to flock to the area and appreciate it for its golden status:

"When fans think of Doctor Who, they are going to think of Herne Bay too."

Hopefully with his drive and his tenacity, Jason will achieve this goal and get his town recognised!

Become a Human Dalek!

Posted: 18 May 2011 07:19 PM PDT

Whilst Kasterborous is always on the lookout for new writing talent, it is certainly not a jobs website. However, it has come to our attention that there is a little bit of work going for those that are interested but it might not be what you expected. Nor would it be for Kasterborous!

A themed even, Doctor Who themed of course, is being held in Bognor on a Saturday in May and the organisers need someone with a big personality but not necessarily a big frame to be a Dalek operator.

That's right, you could actually sit in a Dalek prop for a day and pretend to be a Dalek, following in the steps of legends such as John Scott Martin; it's literally a dream come true!

To give you some more details, the organisers specify that:

"You will need to be of small build but strong in order to fit inside the Dalek and not be worried by being in a confined space. You will have to move the Dalek around, they are quite heavy & awkward there will be a "Big Race" between the two Daleks at some point."

So please bear in mind that if you apply to this you have to seriously want to do it. If you get the job you will be working a 0930 until 1630 time slot with the last hour devoted to packing everything up.

You will be talking through a ring modulator so you'll sound like Skaro's finest and you'll need one massive personality to back that up and interact with crowds of people. You'll also receive sixty pounds for your trouble!
