The BAFTA Awards took place in London earlier tonight, but unfortunately Matt Smith was beaten to the 'Leading Actor' title by Daniel Rigby (Eric and Ernie). Sherlock Vs The Doctor: The BAFTA-ning

Posted: 22 May 2011 08:29 AM PDT

So the great battle between two genre heavy weights for the converted prize of being Lord Moffat's most garlanded show resulted in a nifty one-two combo by the upstart Sherlock- however, neither of its stars picked up the BAFTA for Best Actor

Sherlock was too sharp of mind and fleet of foot leaving Doctor Who empty handed as it picked up Best Drama Series, beating the likes of Downton Abbey and last years winner Misfits, and the Best Supporting Actor nod for Martin Freeman, for his portrayal of Dr. John Watson.

However both Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch lost out to Daniel Rigby for his portrayal of Eric Morecambe in the Victoria Wood scripted Eric and Ernie.

Speaking to The Guardian after the event Cumberbatch was understandably jubilant with a win for the modern reimagining of Arthur Conan Doyle's world famous sleuth:

"It's just terrific. It's validation for what we have been doing. We went in with confidence but to come out with an award is wonderful."

Picking up the Best Drama Series award Co-creator/writer Mark Gatiss (Victory of the Daleks), who saw the win on the 152nd anniversary of  creator Arthur Conan Doyle as validation by the great man  for the reimagining of his most famous creation said:

"It's a huge honour and a fantastic surprise. Thank you so much – it's a huge thrill."

Success for Steven Moffat's Sherlock at the BAFTAs

Posted: 22 May 2011 08:25 AM PDT

Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' Sherlock won in two categories at this year's BAFTAs.

Sherlock won the best Drama Series award, beating Being Human, Downton Abbey and Misfits. Martin Freeman also won under the Sherlock banner for best Supporting Actor.

Matt Smith sadly missed out on winning the Leading Actor award for his role as The Doctor in Doctor Who. Smith lost out to Daniel Rigby for his role in Eric and Ernie. Smith, however, is commended for being the first Doctor Who actor to be nominated for a BAFTA.

Steven Moffat triumphs at BAFTA

Posted: 22 May 2011 08:07 AM PDT

Steven Moffat had cause to celebrate this evening as he won the award for Drama Series with co-creator Mark Gatiss for their mini-series Sherlock. The show beat off opposition from Being Human, Downton Abbey and Misfits. Sherlock also garnered an award for actor Martin Freeman, who won Best Supporting Actor for his role as John Watson, but missed out in the YouTube Audience Award to The Only Way Is Essex.

However, neither of Moffat's principle stars were able to walk off with the Leading Actor award - both Matt Smith for Doctor Who and Benedict Cumberbatch for Sherlock were pipped to the post by actor Daniel Rigby, who played the young Eric Morecambe in the BBC's Christmas special Eric and Ernie. The other nominee in this category was Jim Broadbent for Channel 4's Any Human Heart.

Matt Smith's nomination heralded the first time a leading actor for Doctor Who has ever been represented for the award.

The full list of nominees and winners can be found at the BAFTA website.

The Doctor's Jacket

Posted: 22 May 2011 04:45 AM PDT

An investigation by the Sunday Mail has revealed that the jacket worn by Matt Smith's Doctor in the current series of Doctor Who is a Chinese remake of the Harris Tweed one from last series.

A spokeswoman for BBC Worldwide told the mail that the decision to drop Harris Tweed was taken by programme makers, adding: "We've had no input into the jacket design." A BBC spokeswoman added: "The tweed changed because they needed a warmer jacket for outside filming." Ann MacCallum, Managing Director of the Isle of Lewis mill, said: "The BBC told me Matt wanted something different for the new series."

Lydia Walton, a spokesman for Harris Tweed Scotland said:
Harris Tweed is so special as it is woven by hand on the Western Isles and every 50 metres is stamped by the Harris Tweed authority. It is steeped in romance and history. I find it very odd that they would use a replica costing £360 when our genuine Harris Tweed jackets retail at £250. Why pay more for a replica than have the original?

Western Isles MP Angus MacNeil told the mail:
I'm appalled and outraged. What the BBC are doing is stealing Scotland's heritage. It is a kick in the teeth to one of our most iconic industries.

The BBC has granted a license to AbbyShot Clothiers, a Canadian company who make screen-accurate TV and movie clothing, will sell the the official replica jacket through various affiliates. AbbyShot has previously made the official replica of the tenth Doctor's coat and Martha Jones' red leather jacket. The replica is available to pre-order from the Forbidden Planet website for £323.99 and will go on general sale from 23 October 2011 for £359.99.

Fashion expert Tessa Hartmann said:
I suspect the BBC has gone down the commercial route with the new blazer because they received so much coverage from the previous series' jacket. However, I think part of the allure was the Harris Tweed authenticity and craftsmanship. Once you lose that, it becomes just any blazer. But £360 is a steep price for a replica jacket. Harris Tweed is part of a uniquely British fashion institution and has an incredible heritage and brand identity. People will pay for luxury garments but a Far East replica is not the same thing.

In June 2010, Matt Smith told The Sun newspaper:
I went for a costume fitting this very morning for next year. I've always said that I think the look will evolve. I don't want to say too much but, just practically, we film in November and it's freezing. And just a tweed jacket can get a bit cold.

Writers We Want For Doctor Who

Posted: 22 May 2011 04:16 AM PDT

It's incredible how much high-calibre writing talent Doctor Who can attract.

Douglas Adams, who would go on to write The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Terry Nation, who would go on to engineer Survivors and Blake's 7, and Dennis Spooner all have their names stamped on multiple opening vortex sequences, as well as not-quite-as-famous-but-fairly-well-known personalities like Mark Gatiss, Paul Cornell, Russell T. Davies, and Steven Moffat.  And do we even need to mention Neil Gaiman?

However, for as many brilliant writers who have joined forces with the Doctor Who team, there are at least 25 million other big names who still haven't.  Here's a list of the top currently-living people, in no particular order, that we'd like to see lose their Doctor-Who-writing virginity:
Michael Moorcock's The Coming of the Terraphiles

Michael Moorcock

Technically he already has written for Doctor Who if you count his novel The Coming of the Terraphiles, but book Doctor Who and TV Doctor Who aren't really the same thing, and the latter is consumed by a considerably larger number of people.  As you can gather from the aforelinked Kasterborous review, we found Terraphiles to be rather fab, a concept that could potentially work well on the telly.  The question isn't really "should Michael Moorcock write for Doctor Who?"  Instead, we should be asking "what should he write?"  Would we like to see an adaptation of Terraphiles much like Paul Cornell did with Human Nature?  Or do we want something new?

Even the great Neil Gaiman recognizes Moorcock's importance to the sci-fi-verse, with his famous quote on the cover of Terraphiles:

"My debt to Michael Moorcock is unrepayable."

Just look at this impossibly extensive list of novels and short stories that the bearded genius (no, not the Kasterborous one called Andy Reynolds) has come up with!  A 50-to-60-page Doctor Who script should be no sweat.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, & Peter Jackson

Okay, so The Lovely Bones might have been a slight stumbling block, but for the most part this screenwriting trio made famous for their thrilling adaptation of The Lord of the Rings and subsequent excellent remake of King Kong could very likely combine minds to come up with an excellent, albeit different, take on Doctor Who.

Perhaps the TARDIS could travel to Middle Earth, which is being ravaged by a giant gorilla until he sees and becomes fond of Amy Pond, and resolves to climb with her to the top of the Tower of Isengard where he's shot down by flying walking talking trees.

Actually, it would probably be better if they came up with something new.

Of course, they're currently all tied up with the upcoming two-part film epic The Hobbit, which stars Sylvester McCoy as Radagast the Brown, not to mention Sherlock star Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Stephen Fry, whom we'll discuss further in a minute, as the Master of Laketown, although we think it would make a better plot twist if they just took the whole "of Laketown" part out of his character's name and had Mr. Fry regenerate into John Simm.  Perhaps Mr. Moffat can phone up Peter Jackson when they're done with the LotR prequel (the two have worked together before on Tintin, after all) and beg for an episode from the three that could even be directed by Peter!  The only downside is that the episode's entire budget might go into paying their salaries.

J.K. Rowling

She's probably the least likely person on this list to actually write an episode, because the production crew's already tried it before, as you may recall.  It's no secret that Russell T. Davies was/is a Harry Potter fan; you just have to pop The Shakespeare Code into your DVD player if you want proof of that.  It was Mr. Davies' wish that she actually pen a story for Series 1, which she politely declined, saying she was

"…amused by the suggestion, but simply [didn't] have the time."

Now that she's finished her boy wizard saga, perhaps her schedule's more flexible?

Years later, RTD was inspired to consider asking her to star in the show instead.  A magical tale featuring Rowling and the Doctor surrounded by witches and wizards was what we might have had in lieu of The Next Doctor if David Tennant hadn't changed the showrunner's mind.

Anyone who's read Rowling's complete published works, which is mostly limited to the Potterverse at the moment, won't deny that she's a fantastic writer, and it would be beyond awesome if she composed a bit of Doctor Who.  Our only request, if by some miracle she changes her mind and offers up a story, is that it be something new, original, and nothing to do with sorcery.  Otherwise, it would just be the 'spoof' that Tennant famously tried to avoid.
Doctor Who star Matt Smith

Matt Smith

This choice may surprise you, but we think the Eleventh Doctor should write an episode for himself!  There's certainly no precedent for it, and it would be cool to see a Doctor actor have even more control over his incarnation's behaviour.

Plus anyone who's read the Production Notes column in Doctor Who Magazine 423 knows the man can write creatively, if somewhat bizarrely.  Here's an excerpt from that which sees Matt describing the Grand Moff:

"Steven Moffat, Steven Moffat.  Where to begin?  Fact One: He's a genius.  Complete bona fide genius.  To my mind the greatest TV writer there is…  Fact Two: he's peculiar.  Completely and utterly peculiar.  More peculiar than a rabbit that walks like an ostrich."

Er… sure you're not describing yourself in Fact Two there, Matt?  That reminds us of another reason why Matt could write for his Doctor so well – all he has to do is write about himself!  As executive producer Piers Wenger put it (in the same Production Notes article, no less),

"When Matt 'acts' as the Doctor, eats fish custard, flirts with Vampire Girls, faces the Daleks with only a jammy dodger as a deterrent, that's actually Matt himself, just a bit toned down…"

Plus we've also heard about how Matt writes about his characters as he prepares to play them.  And he's already publicly stated that he wants to write an episode of Doctor Who.  He's able, he's willing, and an episode straight from his mind, if promoted properly, could bring in swarms of viewers.  What are you waiting for, Moffat?

Stephen Fry

We're still waiting, sir.

So what do you think?  Agree with these?  Disagree?  Any other writers you'd add to the list?  This article was purely and unashamedly created for the sole purpose of spawning some discussion, so click the reply button and get discussing!

Adios, Fast-Track

Posted: 22 May 2011 02:47 AM PDT

We were so close… SO close to the end!  North American fans listen up – if you didn't hear the news already by watching Doctor Who on BBC America or Space last night, we've got a fairly disappointing, albeit unsurprising, development…

The Almost People and A Good Man Goes to War will be broadcast in the New World one week later than the UK.

'But why?' you ask, 'Everything was running so smoothly, with the last six episodes in a row including A Christmas Carol broadcast semi-simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic!'  We'll answer that in three words: Memorial Day Weekend.

See, cable networks in general tend to believe that on holiday weekends at the beginning of summer such as this, more people will be traveling and/or enjoying the sun and fewer people will be watching TV.  And in most cases, doubtless this one too, they're right.  If you recall, the same thing happened last year, but it wasn't quite as big a blow because we R-rollers had already been two weeks out of sync anyway.  With two weeks to go before the 777 cliffhanger, we're all going to have to avoid the internet like mad until June 11th.

To say they're sorry, BBC America will be running an all-day marathon (click the link and select '05/28/2011′ from the Date drop-down menu) this Saturday starting at 6am ET with every Matt Smith episode from The Eleventh Hour to The Rebel Flesh except The Vampires of Venice, Vincent and the Doctor, and The LodgerCanadians, meanwhile, will be treated to I, Robot.

Overall, this is just another reason that Doctor Who should be broadcast in the autumn/winter instead of the summer.  The American audience will be much less likely to hit the beach every weekend, and there are fewer holiday weekends like Memorial Day and the 4th of July to cause us to leave home for a few days.  Luckily we'll have a chance to experiment with this in a few months, and assuming Labor Day doesn't sneak up on us while Doctor Who's running, we might even be able to make it through the entire second half of the season without any delays!

My fellow Americans and neighbor Canadians – we're all in this together.  Only two more weeks till the next Doctor Who!

The Almost People airs this Saturday (UK only) at 6:45 PM on BBC One and next Saturday (US and Canada) at 9/8c on BBC America and 8/7c on Space.

It does beg the question of what would happen if the Doctor were to team up with superheroes or take part in a television crossover with another science fiction series.

Russell T Davies went on record saying that he was at one point going to do a "Doctor Who meets Star Trek" crossover but that may have been a little strange.

Maybe the Doctor could come across Firefly's band of miscreants or to throw things another way he could land on Emmerdale Farm (which he kind of already did in Amy's Choice). EastEnders has already featured in Doctor Who and the Red Dwarf crew ended up on the set of Coronation Street so it's not a huge leap in terms of scriptwriting.

When it comes to superheroes, or other comic book characters, maybe it would be amusing to have the Doctor meet someone like the Punisher. Spending all his time trying to convince this dangerous psychopath that killing criminals is not the way to play things!

What would you like to see, which crossovers would you pay money for?
