Doctor Who Website Awards

Posted: 23 May 2011 07:45 AM PDT

A few months ago, while the SFX blog awards were taking place, we were chatting with a couple of other Doctor Who websites with the idea of creating an awards event for the most impressive members of the Whovian online community.

This might have included both websites, podcasts and personalities, but in the event, to date nothing has come of it.

Meanwhile, we've been beaten to it by the Doctor Who Times, who want you to email them with  your nominations for the following categories:

  • Best Doctor Who Site
  • Best Doctor Who News Site
  • Best Doctor Who Newcomer
  • Best Dr Who Animated Series
  • Doctor Who Website Updated Daily
  • Doctor Who Website, Best Banners
  • Doctor Who Website, Best Look!
  • Best Doctor Who Fan Fic Website

This is a great idea, and one that allows fans all across the web, rather than those that gravitate towards particular communities, to make their voices heard and show their appreciation to the many sites that service online fandom.

As such, we urge you to take advantage of this and support the awards.

Now obviously you have your own ideas about these things and we wouldn't want to ask you to vote for Kasterborous in any of the above categories unless you felt strongly enough to email doctorwhotimes@yahoo.com and take a couple of moments to do so. You have until June 24th to get your entry sent.

All you would need to do is list your chosen category in the subject line, stick the name of the website in the body of the email, and don't forget to add your name.

Should you choose to click that link above, we wish you all the best, and our warmest thanks!

Miracle Day Series Trailer

Posted: 23 May 2011 07:05 AM PDT

Released over the weekend was a brand new Torchwood: Miracle Day trailer, featuring all of the show's stars.

As you would expect, John Barrowman and Eve Myles get the best of the dialogue, while Mehki Pfifer and Bill Pullman are also present in key scenes. The action below gives away little, other than the fact that this looks like a gripping serial…

Clearly the direction is top-notch, so we're expecting similar quality from the writing team as well. Given the writers that Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner assembled for the fourth series, this seems almost a given.

Could Miracle Day surpass Children of Earth? We'll see later this year!

Hines in Manhattan

Posted: 23 May 2011 06:16 AM PDT

Great Scot! Jamie McCrimmon himself Frazer Hines will be taking his one man show 'The Time Traveling Scot' across the Atlantic to The Producer's Club Grand Theatre in Manhattan on Friday July 8th 2011.

The event will be followed by a Q & A hosted by Ken Deep from Doctor Who: Podshock, as well as an autograph session.

Advanced tickets for the event will be $22 while tickets on the door will set you back $30.

This is a rare appearance in the US by the Second Doctor's beloved companion, who recently returned to the role in Big Finish's series of Sixth Doctor adventures. Hines is a great storyteller, so if you're able to travel to New York for the event we would certainly recommend it!

Avatar, The Thing, & Fear Her

Posted: 23 May 2011 02:51 AM PDT

If you watched The Rebel Flesh last Saturday, you may have noticed a very strong connection to James Cameron's Avatar, with humans plugging themselves into a machine and operating via disposable pre-grown bodies.

Writer Matthew Graham (seen here with his Life on Mars stars John Simm and Philip Glenister) recently confirmed that the link to the late-2009 blockbuster film was somewhat intentional and came from the Grand Moff himself.  In an interview at Den of Geek, Graham explained how the concept for this two-parter came about:

"…all the stories in Doctor Who start with a basic idea from Steven. And I went and spent a day with him in his kitchen, and he said, 'I want to do something about avatars.' And I said, 'Oh, Steven, are you sure?' I mean, the film was still playing at the time in cinemas. And he said, 'No, no, no, this will be good. This will be like The Thing.'"

So apparently most of the similarities to other sci-fi classics that we've been able to discover (our own Neil Clarke pointed out the relation to The Thing in his review) were on purpose right from the initial pitch, though we're still waiting for someone on the production team to admit additional inspiration from the 2009 Duncan Jones film Moon.

As most Kasterborous readers know by now, The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People is not Graham's first go at TV Doctor Who; he was also the mind behind one of the many Series 2 one-parters that ignited an overwhelming "meh" throughout the fandom: Fear Her.  In the Den of Geek interview, he had a chance to respond to all his premiere story's naysayers.

It was aimed at the kids, because Army Of Ghosts and Doomsday were coming up, and they were going to be very big, very dark and very traumatic. And Russell wanted a playground adventure. He said, 'How old is your son?' At the time he was seven. So, he said, 'Write this one for your son.' That's what I did. I did something that was in primary colours, that had a scary voice in the cupboard. I always say that other people got cybermen, I got two blokes with a red lamp rattling a wardrobe!

But, to be honest with you, I didn't go online particularly and read the responses. From my side of it, the response was brilliant. I had loads of kids write to me and say how much they enjoyed it. And it was only later I realised that the older fans had reacted badly to it. So, I went, 'Well, it's a shame that they have, but it wasn't meant for them.'

Sounds like a reasonable argument.  Besides, what is meant for them (that is to say, you, assuming you're an older fan), according to Graham, is The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People:

"I really hope that those who maybe thought that Fear Her was too childish and too silly, I'm hoping that that will silence them. This is my response!"

UK fans can witness the rest of Graham's response by watching The Almost People this Saturday at 6:45 PM on BBC One.  In the meantime, they (again meaning you) can read the rest of this excellent interview at Den of Geek.

Catherine Tate's Office

Posted: 22 May 2011 11:11 PM PDT

Catherine Tate, remember her? Donna Noble and her heartbreaking Time Lord meta crises? Seems like such a long time ago now.

Tate has definitely not been holding back since she left Doctor Who and has been appearing left, right and centre in all sorts of productions.

Her most recent role was a cameo in the American version of The Office where she played the role of a bumbling interviewee who was trying out for a managerial role.

For those of you not in the know, Hollywood funny man Steve Carrel has played the part of Michael Scott, as a childlike and slightly moronic Regional Manager, in the show for the last seven years. After finally finding love he decided to leave his job and move away with his fiancée Holly Flax. This has left his position open and needing a replacement, cue a host of celebrity cameos. Ricky Gervais played David Brent again as he interviewed for the part, Jim Carrey turned up, as did James Spader and Ray Romano.

But it seems that it is Tate's performance that has won the show's producers and could be getting the top spot herself. One anonymous person even quoted:

"Catherine is the number one choice, the one person who could take the show off in a different direction."

If the actress were to land the part it would give her a massive following in the States as the show is incredibly popular due to the fact that it is utterly hilarious.

The new series of The Office starts later this year, so keep your eyes peeled!
